"Gwern's still on life support"

Dani goes to number 21 to inform Britt that Gwern is still on life support, and to pick up the children who have been staying there.

"Is he going to be OK?"

“Is he going to be OK?” Britt asks, and is told that they have drained the fluid from the brain,

"He's in an induced coma"

but he is now in an induced coma, so no-one knows what is going to happen.

"Thanks for looking after the children"

“Thanks for looking after them – I wouldn’t bother anyone else and Cassie could not do it,” says Dani, upon which Britt points out that she is their auntie.   She maintains that it is too early to wake them up now, so she will take Seren to the club and Gabriel to the child minder.

Colin has just awoken

Colin comes downstairs in his dressing gown,

"I'm doing this for them, not you!"

as Britt adds, “I’m doing this for them – not you!”   Colin and Dani look at each other, and when Dani has gone,

"If I have to go and tell Garry . . .

Britt tells him, “If Gwern doesn’t survive and I have to go to prison to tell Garry that . . .”

"Gwern will get through this"

Colin stops her there, insisting that the boy will get through this;  “Gwern’s the only blood relative I’ve got around here,

"After losing Garry and Brandon"

“after losing Garry and Brandon,” Britt goes on, but Colin reminds her that she has not lost Garry.

"Well, he's not here, is he?"

“Well, he’s not here, is he?” she snaps.

Greta intends to go out

Greta comes downstairs at Y Felin, wearing her coat, and Siôn asked her where she is going;  “To see Dadi,” she tells him.

"Dad's gone to the shop"

Her grandfather says that Dad has just gone to the shop,

"Not Dad – Dadi!"

but she corrects him, “Not Dad – Dadi!”

"Has Dad spoken to you about Dadi?"

“Has Dad spoken to you about Dadi?” he asks, and on finding that he has not, suggests that they are not going anywhere right now;

"Take off your coat and I'll make some breakfast"

“Grandad has got a lot of things to do around here – take off your coat and I’ll make us some breakfast, all right?”

Greta will do so

She obediently goes back upstairs and Siôn looks very concerned.

Hywel has had a sleepless night

When Hywel gets up he is still very worried;

"You have to do something about this, Hywel"

“You have to do something about this not being able to sleep,” Gaynor insists,

"Like what?"

but he wants to know what he can do.

"Everyone knows Gwyneth was responsible"

“How many times do I have to tell you – everyone knows that Gwyneth was responsible for the accident, not you.”

"Perhaps I am to blame"

“But perhaps I am to blame,” he maintains, but she remarks that all he has done is stew since DI Fielding was there.

"There police have your version"

“The police have your version – you’ll have to live with your conscience,” she says, and he snarls that it is easy for her to say that,

"How am I expected too feel?"

but Gwern is in a coma in the hospital – he wonders how he is expected to feel.

"What if he doesn't survive?"

“What if he doesn’t survive – how can I live with that?” he demands.

"Do you want people to blame you?"

Gaynor accuses him of wanting people to blame him, and he says that would be easier.

"Take the blame, if it will make you feel better!"

“Confess then – take the blame, if it will make you feel better,” she growls at him.

Siôn waits for Iolo

Siôn is waiting for Iolo to return from the shop;

"You said you'd told her"

when he does so, his father begins, “Greta’s upstairs with Deian and Loli. [S4C Childrens characters]   You said you’d told her,” and Iolo is worried that his father has done so.

"She was going to the village to look for him"

“It’s not my place,” he points out, “She had put on her coat to go to the village to look for him.”

"I haven't had the chance, Dad"

Iolo maintains that he has not had the chance,

"She could have heard from someone else"

but is warned, “She could have heard from someone else – another child.”

"I don't know how to tell her"

“I don’t know how to tell her, Dad,” and Siôn offers his help, but stresses that it has to come from him.

"You can pretend that Tyler is still alive"

He suspects that it is more than that;  “While Greta doesn’t know, a small part of you can pretend Tyler is alive.”

The police are releasing the crime scene

A police woman is removing the tape from the garage crime scene as Dani watches from the door of the Deri,

Dani goes into the Deri

and she goes inside.

"How are Iolo and Greta coping?"

As they walk along the street Colin asks how Iolo and Greta are this morning, and Siôn tells him that they are coping.   “It will be most difficult when people stop calling,” Colin predicts,

"Are you opening today?"

and as Siôn is going into the bookshop, he is surprised that he is opening today.

"I'm not sure I'll ever open Y Winllan again"

“Just taking a look, that’s all,” replies Siôn, “To be honest, Col, I’m not sure I’ll ever open Y Winllan again – things have been pretty bad over the last few months.   You’d scarcely call the place more than a hobby – and an expensive one.”

"I'm sorry to hear that, Siôn"

Colin is very sorry to hear that, but Siôn makes it clear that he is not going to starve;

"I could be in Iolo's or Dani's shoes . . ."

“If the last few days have taught me anything, I know it’s only money – it could be a lot worse – I could be in Iolo’s or Dani’s shoes –

". . . or Hywel, even"

“or Hywel, even,”

"Everyone knows who caused the crash"

Colin looks rather puzzled by this, and it is pointed out that Hywel was driving the bus.   “Everyone knows who caused the crash,” Colin tells him, but Siôn knows how people will talk.

"He was drinking in the morning"

“And he was drinking on the morning of the accident – I saw him,” Siôn adds, “I’m just saying what I saw – and I wasn’t the only one.”

Dani looks into the garage

The roller shutter door of the garage is raised and Dani looks inside;

She stands by the pit . . .

she cautiously walks towards the pit and looks into it.

. . . and Britt finds her there

Britt comes in and is surprised to see her there.

They look at the murder scene

As they both stare down at the scene of the grisly murder,

"Garry's not going to get out of this"

Britt groans, “Garry’s not going to get out this.”

Dani relates, “You know – the father of one of my children is dead, the father of the others is in jail, my brother is in the morgue and Gwern’s in a coma.

"It must be me!"

“It must be me!”

"Life can be so unfair"

As she turns to walk out, Britt comments, “Life can be so unfair.”

"I want you to be brave, Grets"

At Y Felin, Iolo says, “Hey, Grets, Dad has got something to tell you – and I want you to be brave when you hear it, OK?”

Greta pays attention

Greta takes careful notice

"Dadi's gone"

as he continues, “Dadi’s gone.”

"Where?"

“Where?” she asks, and it is explained that he had an accident and he will not be with them any more.”

She is saddened by this news

She is looking upset

"There are lots of ways to remember him . . ."

as Iolo continues, “But although he won’t be with us, there are lots of ways to remember him – a lot of ways to keep him alive in our minds.

". . . you know the fun you used to have"

“You know the fun you had – and the way he’d kiss you before you go to sleep.”

"He's gone somewhere else?"

“He’s gone somewhere else?” she enquires, and is told that he has, but it is emphasised that Dadi has gone.

"But he'll always be here in our heads"

“But he’ll always be here in our heads

She copies Iolo

“and our hearts,” he goes on.

"For ever"

“For ever,” Greta summarises.

"I'm on my way to the hospital"

Dani comes into the shop just as Cassie is about to leave;  “I’m on my way to the hospital –

"I don't know how I feel"

“and, to be honest, I don’t know how I feel.”

Colin offers Gwern's favourite sweets

Colin takes down a packet of Gwern’s favourite sweets from the shelf and is about to give it to Dani.

“He’s in a coma, Colin,” she reminds him, “Not just now, OK?”

"Sorry, I just didn't think, Dani"

He apologises that he just did not think.

"He can have a bucket full when he's better"

Cassie maintains that he will have a bucket full of those when he is better, but Dani cannot allow herself to think about that now, as she leaves the shop.

"It's hard to know what to say"

“It’s hard to know what to say, isn’t it?” says Colin, and Cassie regrets that there is nothing they can do,

"It's out of our hands, Colin"

as it is out of their hands.

Beside Gwern's bed . . .

In the hospital, Hywel is standing at Gwern’s bedside

. . . Hywel looks grim

and looking even more worried;

He leaves a card for Dani

he leaves a card with Dani’s name on it by the monitor and then it quickly leaves again.

Britt is on the phone to Garry

Britt comes into the Deri, speaking on the phone to Garry;  “Phone me any time – I’m here for you,” she says, “Of course I’ll let you know if there’s any change.

"You worry about yourself"

“Don’t worry, Garry – worry about yourself!”

Cassie comes in

When Cassie comes in, she is reprimanded for leaving the pub unstaffed

"Garry wouldn't be happy about this"

and comments that Garry would not be happy with the situation.   “I’ve just spoken to him and he was worried about Gwern,” she says, “And you’re the first to ask.”

"Dani's not herself"

Cassie explains that everyone is afraid to say the wrong thing, so they do not say anything;  “I just met Danny in the shop – she is not herself.”

"She blames herself for everything"

Britt points out that Dani blames herself for everything, and Cassie does not know how she is coping;

"I wonder if I should go with Dani"

she is considering whether she should offer to go to the hospital with Dani.

"The only place you're going is behind this bar"

“The only place you’re going is behind this bar,” Britt instructs her, “I’ve promised Garry I’ll keep this place going.   There’s somewhere I need to be.”

"Thanks, Cassie"

She hurries out of the Deri, on the way thanking Cassie.

"That doesn't look anything like me"

Greta is drawing a picture and Iolo insists that it does not look anything like him;

"This is you  – that's Dadi!"

she explains, “This is you – this is Dadi.”   He wonders why Dadi looks so pretty,

"I look like a dinosaur's sitting on my head"

and he looks as if a dinosaur has sat on his head.

Siôn smiles

Siôn is watching them and smiles.

She shows Tad-cu her artwork

Iolo suggests that she takes the picture upstairs, and Grandad would like to see it;  he says that she has done well, and wonders if she is going to put it on the wall.

"She took the news better than her father"

Iolo explains, “She took the news better than her father,”

"Children are like that"

and Siôn answers that children are like that.

"She doesn't understand, Dad"

“She doesn’t understand,” Iolo argues, but his father predicts that it will come with time,

Siôn hugs his son

then gives Iolo a hug.

"I have to be all right– for her!"

“I will be all right – I have to be – for her!” he says.

Colin visits Gaynor

Colin brings a box of shopping for Gaynor;  “It must be difficult for you, with everything,” he says,

"Is Hywel here?"

“Is Hywel here?”   She replies that he has been out since this morning and is not answering his phone.

"There are rumours about him drinking"

“I think you should know that there are rumours he was drinking on the morning of the wedding –

"They just want someone to blame"

“they want someone to blame,” Colin tells her,

"Do you remember how it happened?"

and she asks if he remembers how the accident happened.

"A big flash of light and then a bang"

“Well, all I remember is a big flash of light and then a bang – Eileen is the one to ask, as she was sitting at the front,” he says, and Gaynor wonders whether Hywel is to blame at all.

"One;y one person is responsible for all this"

“As far as I’m concerned, only one person is responsible for all this – and that’s Gwyneth.”

"Why are you here, Colin?"

At that moment Hywel walks in the through the back door, and wants to know why Colin is there.   “Where have you been?” Gaynor demands, and he maintains that he has been for a walk.   “What – since this morning?” she continues,

"It's a good way to clear your head"

but Colin comments that it is a good way to clear the head.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hywel growls,

"I there's anything you need . . ."

and Colin assures them that if there is anything they need, they should contact him, before leaving the house.   Hywel is going upstairs for a nap.

Dani anxiously watches

In the hospital a nurse is attending to Gwern as Dani stands anxiously outside, watching.

"I'm here, Gwern"

Then she comes in, closely followed by Britt.

She picks up the card left by Hywel

Dani picks up the card with her name on it, and the two of them look at Gwern.

"I thought you'd like a bit of company"

“I thought you’d like a bit of company,” Britt says.

"They're taking him off life support . . ."

Dani had been stopped by the doctor on her way in and was told that they are going to take him off the life support machine – to see whether he can breathe on his own – and bring him out of the coma.

". . . to see if he can wake himself"

To see whether he can wake himself.   She is on the brink of tears.

Britt moves to the other side of the bed;

"I'm sorry for the way I've been, Dani . . ."

“I’m sorry for the way I’ve been, Dani, I’ve lost one brother already – I can’t face losing the other one.

". . . but I know I have no right to feel like this"

“But I know I have no right to feel like this – well, I’ll see Garry again.”

"I just want Gwern to get through this

“I just want Gwern to get through this,” groans Dani.

"Where did you go?"

When Hywel comes back downstairs at Llwyncelyn, Gaynor is again  demanding where he went, and he replies, “Upstairs.”

"To the hospital"

Then he confesses that he went to the hospital – not to see Eileen, but Gwern,

"I just wanted to see"

insisting that he simply wanted to see.

"Why are you doing this to yourself?"

“Why are you doing this to yourself?” she demands, and he comments that they were just pipes everywhere.

"What's a young boy doing fighting for his life"

“And I thought – what is a young boy doing fighting for his life?   I wasn’t concentrating on driving because you kept phoning me.

"You kept phoning and phoning!"

“You kept phoning and phoning!

"You're as much a part of this as me!"

“You’re as much a part of this as me – but I don’t expect you to see that.”

"Don't point the finger at me!"

“Don’t point the finger at me!” she shouts,

"But I have a conscience, unlike you"

but he insists that he has a conscience, unlike her.   Gaynor is shocked at this accusation.

"He doesn't seem to be waking up"

Gwern is now breathing unaided, with Dani and Britt watching anxiously.   “He doesn’t seem to be waking up,” Dani fears,

"It could take a few hours"

but is told it could take a few hours.

“Even if he does get through this, there’s no telling how badly the brain was damaged,” Dani panics, “What if he doesn’t know me?”   Britt reminds her that she had been told it was a step by step process.

"Come on, Gwern – it's time to wake up!"

Dani takes Gwern’s hand and calls his name, “Can you hear me?   Come on, Gwern – it’s time to wake up!   Gwern, please – I can’t lose you, too!”

"You're not going to lose him, Dani"

Britt tries to restrain her, reminding her that she is not going to lose him,

"Dani – look!"

and while the two of them are hugging, Britt notices that

Gwern is understandably confused . . .

Gwern has opened his eyes and looks around, confused.

. . . but smiles at Dani

When he smiles at her,

She is overwhelmed . . .

Dani is overcome with tears of joy

. . . and grasps his hand

and grasps his hand.
