17 March 2026

Kelly is trying to get some sleep . . .

Kelly is trying to sleep on the sofa at number 7 when there is a loud cry from upstairs, “Kelly!   Where are you?”

. . . but has to hurry upstairs

She immediately rushes up the stairs, assuring Anita that she is on her way.

There has been a slight accident

Anita is sitting on the edge of the bed, where there is an obvious wet patch,

"I woke up and I'm soaking!"

rocking to and fro in distress;  “I’ve been calling and calling you!” she shouts, “I woke up and I’m soaking – I don’t know why.”

"It's not your fault"

Kelly is exasperated, but assures Anita that she will sort it and that it is not her fault.

"If you'd come when I was calling you"

“I know it’s not my fault – if you’d come when I was calling you . . .”   Kelly says that she is sorry and that she will help,

Anita repels Kelly

but Anita snarls viciously at her, “No!” and resists Kelly even touching her.

Later, when calm has been restored

Downstairs, with a cup of tea, they are sitting at the kitchen table and Anita believes that she can hear a tap running.

"No taps are running"

Kelly points out that she has checked and no taps are running.

Now Anita insists that she wants some marshmallows, but Kelly is doubtful whether they will help her get back to sleep.

"I've only just got up"

“I’m not going back to sleep now – I’ve only just got up.”

"Right – it's time for your tablets, then"

In that case, Kelly proposes that she ought to take her tablets, but Anita refuses.

Kelly loads the washing machine

Kelly has stripped the bed and is loading the bedding into the washing machine,

"The back of my hair is a mess"

as Anita complains about the way Kelly has done her hair, maintaining that the back is a mess.   “Are we going anywhere today?” she asks.

Kelly is totally exhausted

Kelly sounds totally exhausted as she answers that she does not think so, but Anita wants to go shopping.   When she is told that they do not need anything,

"I want to make a pie"

she decides that she wants to make a pie.   “I thought you wanted to make a carrot cake,” Kelly comments.

“The cake is for pudding – I want to make a pie, because Dwayne will want his dinner and he likes a pie.”

"We can go tot the butcher's this afternoon"

Kelly agrees and sits down for a moment’s rest, but Anita gets up from the sofa and proposes that they can go to the butcher’s this afternoon.

"Perhaps– we'll see"

“Perhaps – we’ll see,” is Kelly’s reply and Anita echoes her words.

"How about these tablets?"

She is told that she needs to take her tablets but again ignores Kelly.

"It's like a prison here . . ."

Now Anita is in the living room, speaking to someone on the phone;  “She’s locked me in the house – it’s like a prison here – and she’s making me take some tablets as well.

". . .  please come and get me"

“Please come and get me, OK?”

Kelly has fallen asleep

Meanwhile, Kelly has fallen asleep at the kitchen table, so Anita demands what she is doing.
"You know me – I love a nap"

“You know me, Auntie Neet – I love a nap – are you all right?”

Anita answers that she is fine, but is not so sure about Kelly;

"Nor me, if I'm honest"

“Nor me, if I’m honest,” she mutters, under her breath.   When Anita says that she is looking for her hairbrush, Kelly groans, “Please, you don’t need to brush your hair again – you look stunning.”

"Not my hair – yours!"

On the contrary, Anita wants to do Kelly’s hair;

"Like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards!"

“You look as if you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards.   I used to do your hair –

"I used to plait it when you were a little girl"

“I used to plait it when you were a little girl – do you remember?”

"And you were brutal with the knots!"

Kelly does remember that she was brutal with the knots.   Anita is becoming impatient, demanding that she should have the hairbrush now;  she jumps up and down, shouting.

"All right!   All right!"

For a moment, Kelly loses it, “All right – all right!” she exclaims

She finds the hairbrush . . .

and goes to find the hairbrush,

. . . but by then Anita is disposing of her tablets . . .

but Anita is picking up the box of tablets and emptying them into the bin, adamant that she does not need them.

. . . so Kelly tries to retrieve them

Kelly empties the bin and scrabbles around in the contents, insisting that Anita does need them.

Anita brushes her hair

Later, it appears that a measure of calm has been restored and Anita is brushing Kelly’s hair.

"I remember the massive bows in my hair"

“I can remember you putting massive bows in my hair when I went to school.   I remember Katie and Jenna – horrible girls – pointing and laughing and saying that I looked like a rag doll.   I was heartbroken, like.

"You bought even bigger ones . . ."

“And when I told you, what did you do, Auntie Neet?   You went out and bought two massive bows – even bigger ones.   You said that I should never change who I was for anyone –

". . . and sent Dwayne to sort them out"

“and then I found out years later that you sent Dwayne to sort Jenna and Katie out.”

Anita starts singing, “Tonight, tonight, little children.”

"Come on, Amanda, Mam will be home soon"

Kelly can remember her singing that, but Anita goes on, “Come on, Amanda, Mam will be home soon.”

Rhys comes visiting . . ,

There is a knock at the door and they hear Rhys’ voice;  Kelly unlocks and unbolts the door.

. . . which pleases Anita

Anita looks pleased to see him.   He tells Kelly that she looks tired and she wholeheartedly agrees with that, whispering, “Early start.”

Then he tells Anita, “You look as beautiful as ever – I hope you’re ready – I’m here to keep my promise –

"I've come to thrash you at cards"

“I said I’d come back to thrash you at cards.”

"Not rummy – poker!"

Anita immediately brightens up and will go to fetch the cards;  Rhys hopes that she has been practising rummy, but Anita would prefer poker.

"I haven't got clean pants on!"

“Not strip poker, I hope,” he says, “I haven’t got clean pants on!” which makes Anita roar with laughter as she goes upstairs.

"She said you had locked her in the house"

Kelly wants to know what he is doing there and he says that he has been trying to get hold of Kelly;  “Anita phoned me earlier – she said you locked her in the house and were trying to drug her.

"I wouldn't do that"

“I know you wouldn’t do that,”

"Rhys gives a Kelly a hug"

and he gives her a hug.

Anita is listening to the radio

Anita is up in her bedroom, having turned on the radio, listening to the song,

A song is playing

“You are the prayer before dawn

and the rhyme in the song;

You are the first beer of the night

and Welsh cake crumbs.”

She waves to herself in the mirror

She sits on the bed, looks at herself in the mirror and waves as the song continues,

“You are the autumn leaves

and the rainbow between the rain.”

"Sometimes it can feel like too much, like"

Downstairs, Kelly confesses, “Sometimes it can feel like too much, like.”

"That's why you need to accept more help"

Rhys points out that is why she needs to accept more help, but Kelly reminds him that Anita hated those carers.

“What about Griffiths and Diane?” he asks and, although she flatly refuses, he continues, “They want to be here for both of you.”

She is adamant that she will not consider that;

"It's me she needs!"

“We don’t need them – it’s me she needs!”

As Kelly kneels on the floor to tidy some things up, Rhys enquires, “Is it her that needs you, or you who needs her?”   She demands what he means,

"Have you thought you're doing more harm than good?"

so he goes on, “Have you thought that perhaps keeping her from her husband and her friends is doing her more harm than good?”   Kelly predictably disagrees with that.

"Have you brought plenty of money with you?"

The stairs can be heard creaking as Anita comes back down;  “Hey, you – have you brought plenty of money with you?”

"Do you accept cards?"

Rhys asks if she accepts cards.

Kelly retires to the kitchen

Meanwhile, Kelly takes the plates into the kitchen and is in tears, as Rhys maintains that it is a good job he wore a hoodie, as he does not want to take it all off.

She is in utter despair

Kelly sits down in utter despair, wondering how she is going to cope.

"Is something burning?"

Suddenly, Rhys rushes in as he can smell something burning;  it appears to be the toaster.   Kelly says that she is having a bad day, but he thinks otherwise;  “No, it’s not – you need help.”

"Let me see"

Kelly appears to have burned her arm;  when he wants to look at it,

"I thought you were here to play cards"

she protests, “Stop!   I thought you were here to play cards, not to hassle me!”

"This is not healthy, Kel"

Rhys is very concerned and begs her to see that this is not healthy, but she replies that she thinks he should go now.   She calls to Anita, “Rhys has to go now, Auntie Neet.”

This does not please her, as she insists that they are in the middle of a game.

"Sorry, I have to go to work . . ."

He apologises that he has to go to work, so she wants him to promise to come back, which he does,

". . . I'll bring more money next time"

adding that he will bring more money with him next time.

"I know how you feel, Kelly"

Back in the kitchen, he tells Kelly, “I know how you feel,”

"You have no idea!"

but she snarls that he does not have a clue.   “I do – that’s why I know you can’t do this on your own.   I just don’t want you to do something you might regret for ever – like I did with my Gran.

"I wish someone had said that to me"

I wish someone had said that to me – sometimes we have to take a step back and realise we’re not the best people to handle what’s going on.”

Kelly is in tears

Kelly breaks down in tears.

"Halfpenny, halfpenny"

Anita, sitting on the sofa, is singing the word, “Halfpenny,” repeatedly to herself.

"We both knew she was ill"

Rhys gets a glass of water and gives it to Kelly, as he continues to explain, “Gran and I both knew she was ill for a while, but we were frightened.   If anyone found out they would separate us – and that was the last thing we wanted, so we carried on, just the two of us,

"Exact like you and Anita

“exactly like you and Anita.   I remember getting up to go to school after being up with her all night.”

"When ` saw you this morning, I was right back there"

He takes Kelly’s hand as he continues, “And when I saw you this morning, I was right back there – the stress, the guilt, the feeling of being so . . .”

Kelly kisses him

He gets no further, as Kelly suddenly kisses him, then apologises;

"You don't need to be sorry"

“You don’t need to be sorry,” he tells her.   She says that she she must get back to Auntie Neet,

"This is not the way she would want you to live"

but Rhys reminds her, “This is not the way she would want you to live,”

He kisses her before leaving . . .

and this time he kisses her, then leaves through the back door.

. . . and Kelly secures the door

She carefully bolts the door behind him, then goes to face Anita,

"He's my boyfriend, Amanda!"

where she is accused, “You’re trying to steal him from me, aren’t you?   You can’t bear to see me happy.   He’s my boyfriend, Amanda!

Kelly says nothing

“You’re not sorry – and Mam and Dad won’t care either, will they?   Because you’re always right!

"You spoiled my best dress!"

“And you spoiled my best dress – you ripped it!   I looked so pretty in it.

"Stop all this crying, will you?"

“And Dad was shouting, ‘Stop all this crying, will you?   All this fuss.   Amanda looks prettier in it anyway.’”

Kelly is despairing

Meanwhile, Kelly is despairing, as Anita goes on, “Why aren’t I good enough for them?   Why is it all about you?”

"It's all about you now"

Kelly sadly answers, “It’s all about you now – yeah, you got the happy ending –

"Meic and Darren and Dwayne"

“with Meic and Darren and Dwayne.”

"And Kelly – she was so special"

Anita adds, “And Kelly – I remember seeing her for the first time – she had big blue eyes and I knew she was special – Kelly and me against the world.”

"We ended up on a nudist beach . . ."

Kelly is actual smiling now, as Anita recalls something else;  “We went on holiday once and we ended up on a nudist beach – and Kelly started taking photos of them.   We had to run –

". . . and this bloke was running after us"

“and this bloke was running after us saying, ‘A mother and daughter like you should know better!’   Mam and daughter –

"It was the biggest compliment I ever got"

“it was the biggest compliment I ever got.”

Laughter soon turns to tears

Kelly has now been brought to tears again;  “You might be her mother –

"I'm the mother she's chosen"

“but I’m the mother she’s chosen!   She chose me.”

Later, Kelly is sleeping again

Later, Kelly has fallen asleep again on the sofa,

Anita has unloaded the washing machine

but suddenly hears the sound of water, so jumps up to investigate.   Anita is taking the soaking wet washing from the machine and hanging it on the drying rack.

“What are you doing now?” Kelly demands

"Auntie Neet, it's soaking . . ."

and Anita maintains she is putting it out to dry.   “Auntie Neet, it’s soaking –

". . .you stopped it in the middle of the cycle!"

“you stopped it in the middle of the cycle – Auntie Neet, please!”

Anita is adamant that she is helping, but Kelly does not agree with this evaluation;

"This stupid illness makes everything worse"

“This stupid illness makes everything worse – stop!   You’re not helping!”

She is at the end of her tether

Kelly is now at the end of her tether,

Anita is putting on a wet jumper

but Anita is putting on a jumper she has just taken from the washing machine,

"This is a nice jumper"

muttering to herself that it is a nice jumper.

"Take that jumper off!"

“Take that jumper off – it’s soaking!” Kelly tells her,

They tussle

 but is resisted;

"For God's sake, take it off!"

she shouts, “For God’s sake, take it off!”

Anita unleashes a vicious slap . . .

Anita puts up some resistance and delivers a hefty slap to Kelly

. . . something Kelly was not expecting

which splits her lip,

Anita takes off the jumper

then realises that she is soaking wet and takes it off of her own accord.

Kelly sits in the kitchen

Kelly sinks to a chair in the kitchen

Anita comes in . . .

as Anita shuffles in to get some kitchen towel

. . . to help with Kelly's lip

to attend to Kelly’s lip.

"I'm sorry – I can't do this"

Kelly turns to her and says that she is sorry;  “I can’t do this.”   Anita understands and is also sorry.

Anita gives her a kiss . . .

She gives Kelly a kiss

. . . and a hug

and hugs her.

Much later, Kelly opens the door . . .

Much later, Kelly is unlocking and unbolting the front door again;

. . . and Ieuan is admitted

this time Ieuan enters and looks around, puzzled.

"I can't do this on my own"

“I can’t do this on my own,” sighs Kelly.

"You don't have to"

Ieuan assures her that she does not have to

He hugs Kelly

and gives Kelly a hug.
