9 December 2021

Mathew makes an early morning cup of tea . . .

Matthew just got up and turns on the kettle;  as he is getting a cup from the cupboard, he hears a groaning sound and turns off the kettle again.

. . . when he hears strange sounds

As the groaning and crying sound becomes louder, he goes to investigate its source

He hears Eifion shouting, "Izzy!"

and as he approaches Eifion’s room, he hears a shout, “Izzy!”

Eifion awakens from his nightmare

as Eifion wakes up in a panic.

"Is everything all right?"

Mathew wonders if everything is all right, as he was shouting and having a nightmare.

"What was I shouting?"

Eifion insists that there is nothing wrong, but asks what he was shouting.

"Do you want to talk about anything?"

Mathew diplomatically says that he is not sure, adding, “Do you want to talk about anything?”   Eifion simply answers that he is fine

Eifion is back under the duvet

and retreats under the duvet.

Arwen has been personalising the boxes

At Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx is very admiring of the picture on the pizza box, and Sioned agrees that it is much better than a plain box;  “Why did you have to draw a picture of builder?” Jinx asks,

"Tyler's ordered a pizza tonight"

and Arwen points out that it is for Tyler, who has ordered a pizza for tonight.  Jinx thinks that is genius, putting a picture of the purchaser on the box.

She takes this opportunity of asking, “Can I stay home today to help?” but is told that her next shift is this evening;

"Writing and sums come first"

writing and sums come first.   Sioned suggests that she needs a name for the company,

"Pizza Penri"

and Arwen immediately decides, “Pizza Penri.”

Sioned is of the opinion that she needs a proper website for ‘Pizza Penri’,

"I'll get someone to do it"

and she will see if she can find someone to do it on the cheap.

"What do you want, Tes?"

At breakfast time in number 10, Jaclyn asks Tesni what she wants to eat, but receives no reply.

"We could have a muffin and green tea"

“Perhaps we could go out and have a muffin and green tea –

"We're lucky, being able to work together"

“we’re lucky, being able to work together in the pub.   No rush to get ready to go to work.”

"If you want to go out, I'm not stopping you"

Tesni declares that she is going back to bed;  “If you want to go out, I’m not stopping you!”   Jaclyn protests that she want to spend some time with her daughter, as they have not done much together.”

"I can't win with you, Mam!"

“I’ve moved back here – I can’t win with you, Mam,” Tesni grumbles, and Jaclyn says that she is miserable, jealous of Dad and Guto gallivanting while they are stuck there.   Tesni reminds her that they only put the best photos on Facebook

Tesni goes upstairs

and disappears upstairs.

Eifion is out of bed at last

Mathew is preparing his lunchbox when Eifion appears, complaining that he is tired, after Mathew woke him so early.   Mathew maintains that he needs to get out of the house, or do some physical work, in order to get a good night’s sleep.

"It's not easy to do anything with these injuries"

“It’s not easy to do anything with these injuries,” Eifion stresses, “But I’m a little bit better.”

"I could do with some help at APD"

Mathew could really do with some help, as Jason is away, and asks for his cousin to do him a favour.

"I could do with the money"

“I could do with the money – it would help with the rent,” Eifion moans, and Mathew will have a word with Anita.

“What does she know about building?” demands Eifion,

"Anita does all the office work"

and Mathew explains that she does all the office work and prepares the timetables, which means that he can be out on site, keeping tabs on the workers.

"I'm not afraid of hard work"

Eifion insists that he is not afraid of hard work, and Mathew leaves for work without another comment.

"Rhys – where are you?"

At Llwyncelyn, Hywel is trying to contact Rhys;  “Where are you?   I thought perhaps we could do something together today – a round of golf?

"It would give Australia a chance to have a chat"

“It would give us a chance to have a chat – phone me, OK?”

The answer it not what he expected

A text message quickly replies to him,

"I'm busy"

simply saying that Rhys is busy.

"I'll come to see you"

In the Deri, Cassie is speaking to someone on the phone;  “I’ll come to see you when it’s quieter here.”   She informs Tesni that it was Madge;

"She was a barmaid with me in Blackpool"

“She’s a character – she was a barmaid with me in Blackpool – she said that the bar is full already – it’s more like ten o’clock at night than in the morning.”

"I've never been there"

Tesni comments that she has never been there, and is told, “When the lights are on, it’s an all-day party.   I sometimes miss it – mind you, when the ‘Tracy and Aloma’ fans arrive from Gwalchmai, things could get messy!

"I've seen Three Little Pigs naked"

“I’ve seen Tri Mochyn Bach [Three Little Pigs] naked on the Golden Mile.”

"Someone sounds happy"

As Tesni laughs heartily, her mother comes in, remarking that someone sounds happy;  “Cassie was talking about the time she was a barmaid in Blackpool,” says Tesni,

"I'd like to hear about that"

and Jaclyn would like to hear about that, but is told that a delivery has just arrived which needs to be put in the freezer.

"Cassie's made me a bacon butty"

Jaclyn is rather put out that Tesni cannot assist her, as Cassie has just made her a bacon butty;  “That’s obviously better than your mother’s breakfast!” Jaclyn growls.

"I've prepared next week's timetable"

In APD, Anita has already prepared next week’s timetable,

"We're a worker short with Jason away"

but Mathew points out that they are a worker short with Jason away, and they are busy.

"You can't ask Eifion to fill Jason's shoes"

“You can’t ask Eifion to fill Jason’s shoes, can you?   His slippers, perhaps,” Anita sneers.

Eifion could have the less demanding tasks

Mathew says that he can measure and cut plasterboards and Tyler can put them in place.   Anita is doubtful that they can afford to pay him, so Mathew volunteers to take a pay cut while he is with them.   “He’s not feeling too special this morning, but he’ll be here this afternoon.”

"We would expect a full week's work"

Anita suggests that they would expect a full week from the new worker, at least.

"He was a big support to me, Anita"

“Anita, he was a big support to me when I lost Izzy – this is my way of saying thank you,” he tells her,

"Don't let him take advantage"

but she urges him not to let Eifion take advantage, family or not.

"We've got a new worker – Eifion!"

When Tyler comes in, she complains to him, “You know what?   We’ve got a new worker now – Eifion!”

"He'll think he can boss me around"

Tyler does not like the sound of this;  “He has worked for APD before, and will think that he can boss me around.”   She says that he has already had a morning off

"We won't take any of his nonsense!"

and is adamant that they will not take any of his nonsense.

Eifion is still having a 'kip'

Mathew goes back to the shop flat and finds Eifion catching up with his sleep on the sofa;

"New job – staring now!"

“I’ve got good news for you – a new job, starting now – so chop chop!”

"I haven't had any lunch yet"

Eifion protests that he has not had lunch yet, and maintains they have not discussed pay.

"You'll get paid like everyone else"

“You’ll get paid like everyone else,” Mathew adds, but he insists there must be no hard jobs, like concreting or carrying bricks – he will want at least an hour for lunch.

Mathew give him his orders . . .

Mathew is obviously becoming tired of this;  “Right, but I want you in the yard as soon as you’ve filled your belly!”

. . .and Eifion's response is to go back to sleep

Eifion agrees to this and immediately lies down again;  Mathew walks out of the flat.

Sioned meets Hywel

As Sioned walks along the street she encounters Hywel;  he seems to be in a bad mood, and growls at her, “If it’s about council business,

"Make an appointment like everyone else!"

“make an appointment like everyone else!”

"This is a personal matter"

She replies that it is a personal matter,

"You've given me nothing but trouble!"

but he continues, “You’ve given me nothing but trouble lately!”   She explains that her mother was just stirring and that she is following her own path now.

“We could help each other,” she proposes,

"I need help to create a website"

“I need help to create a website for ‘Pizza Penri’.   I’m helping Arwen with her little business – making pizzas and delivering them locally.”   Hywel has heard about that, so Sioned assumes, “You’re happy to do it, then?   She can’t pay you, but I’ll make sure you get good PR – just like you got for cleaning up the graffiti.”

"And what's in this for Sioned Rees?"

He wonders what is in this for Sioned Rees, and she says it is her way of saying thanks to Jinx for putting a roof over her head.   “Are you together?” he asks, with surprise, and she remarks that is what she likes about him – he gets straight to the point.

"No, I'm not sleeping with Jinx!"

“No, I’m not sleeping with Jinx – he’s not my type – I prefer men who are sophisticated and powerful.”

"Lunch and a pint in the Deri"

After a moment’s thought, Hywel agrees that he will do it, in return for lunch and a pint in the Deri.

"I don't have time to look for him.Mathew!"

Outside the back of APD, Anita is complaining to Mathew on the phone;  “I don’t have time to look for him!” she moans, “I’m trying to finish the accounts.   I’ll give him another five minutes.”

Then she says to Tyler, “You know what?   APD has a good name at the moment – a shabby worker like Eifion could ruin it all!”

"I can do a better job on my own"

Tyler maintains that he can do a better job on his own, and Anita hopes that some good may come out of this – he might not get the job after all.

Then Eifion is discovered

As Tyler is about to get into the van, he finds Eifion asleep on the passenger seat, and bangs on the window.   “Eifion – what do you think you’re doing?” Tyler shouts.

Anita insists that he cannot sleep at work;  “Being on site when youre tired is dangerous, you know!”

"You never stop nagging!"

He gets out of the van, complaining that she never stops nagging.   He maintains that he works for Mathew, not for them,

That is the sum total of his work for APD

then walks away.

"It was all my fault, Hywel"

There are some apologies going on in the Deri;  Tesni confesses that it was all her fault, admitting that she can be so stupid sometimes.

"Thanks for being honest"

Hywel thanks them for being honest and he is glad to know who told Rhys.

"One of the few exes I can look in the eye"

“I wasn’t trying to insult you, honestly – you’re one of my few exes that I can look in the eye,” Cassie adds,

"You have a few skeletons in the cupboard as well"

and he remarks that she has a few skeletons in the cupboard as well.

"A lock-up full of them"

“Not just a wardrobe-full – a lock-up too,”she acknowledges, “But there we are, we all have to live with our past – we can’t fight it – people forget.”

"I have no way of getting Rhys to understand"

He regrets that he has no way of getting Rhys to understand if he hides things from him;

"And what does Gaynor think?"

Cassie wonders what Gaynor thinks, but he has not told her yet.   “I will when the time is right,” he says,

"Don't draw more attention to yourself"

and she warns him not to draw more attention to himself.   He seems to agree that this is good advice.

"You're not all bad, are you, Hywel?"

Sioned thanks Hywel for his help today;  “Arwen will be thrilled,” and he is glad he could help.   “You’re not all bad, are you?” is her parting comment.

"A good barmaid knows what the locals want"

Eifion comes in, looking depressed, and tells Tesni, “A good barmaid knows what the locals want – lager.”

"I had you down as a cask ale bloke"

She had imagined him as cask ale bloke, wearing socks and sandals,

"I'm not Siôn White, am I?"

and he snarls, “I’m not Siôn White, am I?”   She will bring his pint over to him.

Arwen is deep in thought

Arwen is looking at one of her pizza boxes when Sioned comes back and advises her,

"Hywel Llywelyn's going to create the website"

“Hywel Llywelyn is going to create a website for Pizza Penri.”

"We'll be able to take orders online"

Jinx is pleased that they will be able to take orders online now,

"I'm not just a pretty face"

and Sioned says that she is not just a pretty face;  they make a good team.

"Are you two together?"

Arwen is very grateful, and ask Jinx if he and Sioned are together.

"No – we're just friends"

Sioned makes it quite clear that they are just friends,

"That's what Mam said about Rhys"

but Arwen comments, “Mam said that she and Rhys were friends at the start.”   She is told to get on with her work and stop jabbering.   “I’m going to make Dani a salami pizza –

"You do the cartoon, Jinx"

“you do the cartoon!” she instructs Jinx.

"Yes, OK, boss!"

Sioned can do the billing.

"I fancy a change this time"

Eifion saunters back to the bar with his empty glass, and Tesni is already getting him another one, but he fancies a change this time, and protests that he did not ask for another lager.   “Brandy and lemonade, please,” he says,

"I wish you'd make your mind up!"

and she wishes he would make up his mind, describing him as childish.

"Someone who should be in St Fagan's!"

“And you’re boring,” he goes on, “But there we are – you are going out with someone who should be in St Fagan’s!” [Welsh National Museum of History, near Cardiff]

A direct hit with the brandy and lemonade

This is the last straw, and in a temper Tesni flings the brandy and lemonade at him, causing him to exclaim, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?   You should sack her!” and he rushes out of the Deri.

"That's shameful, Tes!"

Cassie and Jaclyn have just witnessed the act;  “It’s shameful!” shouts Jaclyn, and Tesni remarks that her mother has often embarrassed her.

"You need a skin like an elephant"

Cassie knows that it was Eifion’s fault, adding, “You need a skin like an elephant if you want to work here – let things go in one ear and out the other.”

"I make a mess of every job I get!"

Tesni wails, “I make a mess of every job I get – I don’t expect to be paid for today,” as she heads for the door of the pub.

Cassie remarks that she would never throw a short over anyone;

"A pint, yes – the get wetter!"

“A pint, yes – they get wetter!   If you promise it won’t happen again, you can keep your job.”

Tesni is certain that Mark Jones will find out, but Cassie promises to deal with him;  “You must apologise to Eifion – that idiot’s money is just as good as anyone else’s money.

"I don't deserve a boss as lovely as you"

Now come to the kitchen with me for a cup of tea.”   Tesni says she does not deserve a boss as lovely as Cassie.

Jaclyn looks rather dejected

When Hywel returns from the gent’s, he notices Jaclyn, looking rather lost,

"You look like someone who needs a drink"

and suggests, “You look like someone who needs a drink – what will you have?”

Eifion is back at the flat

Mathew finds Eifion back at the flat,

"You're supposed to be at work!"

and admonishes him, “You’re supposed to be at work – I told Tyler you would help him.”   Eifion answers that he was going to

"Anita gave me a lecture"

until Anita gave him a lecture on health and safety.

"Look, we have to work by the rules"

“Look we have to work by the rules – I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you,” Mathew emphasises, “I’ve gone out of my way to help you!”

"Life hasn't been easy for me, either"

Eifion alleges that he is sorry for disappointing his cousin, but life has not been easy for him either.

Mathew enquires, “Look, are you having the same nightmare every night about someone specific?

Mathew urges him to talk about it

“I made the mistake of not talking about things, and I had some terrible bouts of depression because of that.”

"About trying to escape from the dogs at Deri Fawr"

Eifion lies that the nightmares are about trying to escape from the dogs at Deri Fawr, that is all, and now he is over it.

"Gerwyn and Guto are in Machu Picchu"

Over their drinks in the Deri, Jaclyn tells Hywel that Gerwyn and Guto are in Machu Picchu;  she recommends that he ought go there with Rhys.

"I don't think he'd go for a walk round Carmarthen"

“It’s no secret that our relationship is often under strain – I don’t think he’d go for a walk with me around Carmarthen, never mind Peru!” is Hywel’s judgement.

"I feel I should stay to be with Tes"

She says that she misses them, but cannot afford to go out there too;  “And I feel I should stay to be with Tes, despite the fact she drives me mad sometimes.”

"Is it the age difference?"

He gathers that she is still not happy that Tesni is with Siôn;  “Is it the age difference that worries you?   There are a lot of fingers being pointed at Siôn for being with a teenage girl.   People will always find fault.”

She does not want to talk about Tesni's love life

Jaclyn would prefer to talk about something other than her daughter’s love life.

"Siôn is coming over"

Tesni is now leaving and tells her mother that Siôn is coming over;  “Right, I won’t disturb you, then,” says Jaclyn.

Hywel asks if she would like another one;

"Siôn White's company or Hywel Llywelyn's?"

she replies, “Siôn White’s company or Hywel Llywelyn’s – that’s a dilemma!   Make it a double, please.”

Tyler has completed the job

Tyler has finished the job and is back at APD;

"I can't wait to get home"

Anita cannot wait to get home, put her feet up and open a bottle of wine.

"Is sleeping beauty coming in tomorrow?"

Tyler is having a special delivery pizza, and enquires, “Is sleeping beauty coming in tomorrow?”

Anita finds something disturbing . . .

Anita has just noticed something on the computer screen which troubles her;  she is not quite sure, and does not think he wants to know, but Tyler demands to know, as he works there.

. . . which she shows to Tyler

She turns the laptop round to show him,

"Is that an old one?"

and he says, “Is that an old one?”   She does not know, but she has not seen it before.

"Are you going to tell Mathew, or shall I?"

“Well, are you going to tell Mathew – or do you want me to?” he asks.
