25 December 2021 (1st) CHRISTMAS DAY

Royce, the anxious chaplain

Next morning there is a visitor to Dylan’s cell in the form of the prison chaplain, apparently named Royce, who appears to be scared of Dylan.

"Where have you been?"

“Where have you been?   We said 9:00am,” Dylan growls.   The nervous chaplain tells him that things have changed and that he cannot do it.

Dylan turns menacing

“One phone call from me will spoil every Christmas from now on!” he is threatened, “Don’t panic – we just stick to the plan.”

The chapel service has ended

Outside Bethania, people are just emerging from the chapel and wishing each other Merry Christmas.   Megan remarks to Jinx that it is nice to see new faces;

"Probably won't see them again until next year"

“But we probably won’t see them again until next Christmas,” she adds,

"Once a year is better than not at all"

and Jinx suggests that once a year is better than not at all.   “It was a good idea to have an early morning Christmas service – everybody can go home for lunch.   Are you having turkey? she asks.”

"Pizza!"

Arwen, who has by now joined them, replies, “Pizza!” which seems rather inappropriate to Megan.   When she heads for home,

"You haven't bought a turkey, have you?"

Arwen goes on, “What are we having for lunch?   You haven’t bought a turkey, have you?”

"It's a surprise"

He tells her that it is a surprise.

"Give Mam a cwtch from us all!"

At Bryntirion, Jason is just finishing a phone call to Dai in Australia and wishes him good night;  “Give Mam a cwtch from us all!”   Then he remarks to Kelly and Anita, “That pair have lost the plot – they had kangaroo for Christmas lunch!”

"I thought the were a protected species"

Both of them find this disgusting, and Kelly thought that they were a protected species;  “What – Mam and Dai?” laughs Jason,

Ifan is also amused

and Ifan joins in the mirth.

Kelly has a present from Jason

Kelly wants to open the presents now, and finds a small box from Jason;

"The best presents come in small boxes"

Anita maintains that the best presents come in small boxes.

More earrings to add to her collectiom

Kelly loves the long dangling earrings, much to Jason’s relief.

“Actually I’ve got you another little present, but it’s a surprise,” he announces,

"We're having Christmas lunch in Y Plas!"

“I’ve booked a table at Y Plas – we’re having Christmas lunch in Y Plas!”

"I've been slaving away all morning!"

Anita shouts in mock outrage that she has been slaving away in the kitchen all morning and that there has been a 15-pound turkey in the oven since six o’clock;  “Why didn’t you tell me?” she shrieks, and he points out that it would not be a surprise then.

"We can't go without Auntie Neet"

“Jason, we can’t go without Auntie Neet,” Kelly insists, and Anita continues to complain that she cannot eat a turkey that size by herself.   Jason is quite sure that she will cope, as she has a good stomach, and makes it clear that they are all going.

Ifan is excited

Ifan appears to be very excited about the prospect.

"In the car in fifteen minutes!

Then it is revealed that Anita is in on the joke;  “Auntie Neet, put that Christmas lunch on hold until tomorrow – I want you out of those pyjamas, into your glad-rags and in the car in fifteen minutes!”

Kelly rushes to get to the shower first

Kelly is eager to bag the shower first.

Outside Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx tells Arwen, “I thought you’d be glad to see your mother on Christmas Day,”

"On Skype, yes"!

and she agrees that she would if it were on Skype, but not that travelling all that way to the north.

He is sure that it will make her mother’s Christmas, but she moans, “Not mine!   This is the worst Christmas ever –

"Chapel – and then spending the day n the car!"

“chapel – and then spending the day in the car!”

"There's no traffic on Christmas Day"

He replies that it will only take three hours at the most, as there is no traffic on Christmas Day,

He puts a cardboard box in the car

then picks up a cardboard box and puts it in the car.

"I'll buy you a bacon and egg burger on the way"

Arwen asks what it is and is told, “Nothing – I’ll buy you a bacon and egg burger on the way.”

"Will they be open on Christmas Day?"

She doubts if they will be open on Christmas Day, something which he has obviously not thought about.   He shuts the door of the house and they begin their journey.

A holly branch in the woods

In the woodland, after passing a suitably Christmassy holly bush, a car comes to a stop;

"Don't even think about running away!"

the chaplain gets out and informs Dylan, “Four hours at the most – and don’t even think of running away!”

"You're in no position to make threats"

“I don’t think you’re in any position to make threats,” Dylan reminds him, “I mean it – one step out of line . . .”

The petrified padre

He imitates pointing a gun at the chaplain, who now looks even more frightened.

Dani puts up a banner . . .

In the Deri, Dani is trying to fix a banner reading ‘Happy Birthday Seren’ with limited success, and asks Gwern to pass the Sellotape.

. . . but gets no assistance from Gwern

He is concerned, “I’ve got to miss out on Christmas because it’s her birthday?”   Dani emphasises that he will not miss Christmas,

"I've got two cheese hedgehogs to make!"

as she has sausage rolls and two cheese hedgehogs to make, so will he please pass the Sellotape.  “I’m going out,” he says, and she is left holding up the banner.

"Greta's on her second chocolate santa"

Tyler comes downstairs at number 7 and informs Iolo that Greta will not want breakfast, as she is on her second chocolate Santa already.

"She'll be sick before the party!"

“Ty, stop her – she’ll be sick before the party!” Iolo urges him, then groans, “I don’t have any birthday paper for Seren’s present – I hope she doesn’t mind.”

Tyler does not want to miss his Christmas lunch

Tyler grumbles that he does mind that they are going without their Christmas lunch to go to Seren’s party;  he is admonished that they will have it tonight, and Dani needs their help.   “She’s alone – for now, anyway.”   Tyler’s interest is piqued,

"There's nothing else I can say at the moment"

but Iolo goes on, “There’s nothing else I can say – at the moment – and if you’re going to moan about Christmas lunch,

Carrots, waiting to be peeled

“you can help with the vegetables – go on!”

Megan is also doing the vegetables

Megan is also preparing vegetables at home, singing carols to herself;

As she goes to the fridge . . .

as she has just taken something from the fridge, she hears the sound of a door closing.

. . . she hears an unusual noise

This puzzles her, so she goes to investigate and suddenly comes face to face with Dylan;

"Merry Christmas, Megan"

“Merry Christmas, Megan,” he says,

This comes as a shock to her

and she is very shocked

“Sit down, and I’ll go and make you a cup of tea – your throat must be dry after all that singing,”

"I should put away that knife if I were you"

and he advises her to put away the knife that she is carrying, as they do not want an accident to happen.

"I've come to apologise"

He takes off his hoodie and she demands what he is doing there;  “I’ve come to see you – and to apologise,” he replies.   She is surprised that they have let him out, and he advises that he has been allowed out for the day,

"Under the supervision of the prison chaplain"

“Under the supervision of the prison chaplain – he’s not far away, but that’s not important.   As I said, I’m sorry for stealing your car, but I was in a bit of a pickle.”

He agrees with Megan that he took advantage of her;

"You were so kind to a lost soul like myself"

“And after you had been so kind to a lost soul like myself –

Dylan's trademark leer

“but the chaplain has been a good influence.”

"Why shouldn't I call the police?"

She finds that hard to believe, and wonders why she should not call the police, as he should not be there.

"I regret the life I used to lead"

“I just want you to know – everyone to know – how much I regret the life I used to lead,” he alleges,

"Only because you got caught!"

but she points out that is only because he was caught.   “I have a baby son – I can’t be a father to him in jail –

"I don't want him to grow up like me"

“I don’t want him to grow up like me.”   Megan does not think that she can cope with this,

Megan finds this just too much

and sinks down into a chair.

The gently rippling stream . . .

The car arrives at Y Plas, where a stream is rippling nearby;

. . . outside Y Plas

Kelly and Anita are overwhelmed by the surroundings.

"Jase, it's just amazing!"

“Jase, it’s amazing!” gasps Kelly, and he looks very pleased with himself.   Then they hear another car door closing,

Amanda, Kelly's mother, is also there

and Kelly’s mother is coming towards her.

"I thought it would be nice to have the family together"

“I thought it would be nice to have the family together, after the year that we’ve just had,” says Jason,

Kelly is almost in tears

and Kelly is close to tears.   “You go in – Ifan and I will park the car.”

Megan is surprised that Dylan is not having a cup of tea, but he says there is somewhere else that he needs to be.

"You have a problem, Dylan"

“If you’re thinking of going to see your son, you have a problem,” she warns, “It’s Seren’s birthday party – I wouldn’t want to miss my Christmas lunch to go to a party, but there we go.”

This is a setback to his plans

This proves a hindrance to Dylan’s plans, but he says that it will give him more time to be in Megan’s company;  “There’s nothing I’d like more than to be able to make up for all the lies and bad things I’ve done,” he maintains,

"I've made a lot of people's lives hell"

“I’ve made a lot of people’s lives hell – especially my sister’s.”  Then he gets to his point;

"Could you have a word with her?"

“I was hoping that, perhaps, you could have a word with her to tell her how sorry I am.”

"It's not my place to do that"

Megan replies that it is not her place to tell Jaclyn, and wonders if he has not tried to talk to her;  “Yes, I’ve written to her, but she won’t visit me,” he sighs.   Megan concludes that he will just have to live with what he has done, and all those people he has let down.

"I thought forgiveness was your big thing"

With a hint of anger in his voice, he says, “I thought forgiveness was your big thing,”

"You have to truly change"

and Megan insists that he has to truly change to deserve that;  she does not believe that he can change.

"I don't think you can call yourself a Christian"

“I don’t think you can call yourself a Christian unless you can forgive!” he growls at her.    She does not consider it is his place to tell her how to be a Christian;

"People like you think you're better"

he smiles, “People like you always think you’re better than everyone,” and she can clearly see that he is showing off his true colours now – it is so easy to see through him.

"Did you manage to see through that son of yours?"

Then he comes to another part of his plan;  “Did you manage to see through that son of yours?”

"How do you know about Gareth Wyn?"

She wonders how he knows about Gareth Wyn,

"We mix in the same circles"

and he informs her, “We mix in the same circles – Megan Harries’ son and me.   I haven’t done anything to him,

"I'm finding it hard because you won't trust me"

“but I’m finding it hard because you won’t trust me, Megan!

“Listen, we can’t argue like this on Christmas Day before you’ve had lunch.”

He takes the knife away

He picks up the knife from the table and goes to peel the vegetables.

Multicoloured cakes

In the Deri, the rather muted birthday party is under way, and Dani says that Gwern is sulking upstairs;

"It can't be easy for Gwern today"

Iolo can understand that it cannot be easy for him today, and Dani moans that it is not easy for anyone.

"Why aren't you eating anything?"

“Why aren’t you eating anything?   It isn’t there to look nice!” she says, and Iolo calls to Greta, who is sitting at a table with a very different Seren.

"I'm leaving room for my Christmas lunch"

Tyler protests that he is leaving room for his Christmas lunch, and Dani scolds him, “I’ve been cooking since 7:00am – just eat something!”   He asks if she is all right,

"Three children and not one father around!"

and she replies, “Well, I’ve got three children and not one father around, because they’re both in jail – why wouldn’t I be all right?”

"We'll take the children to number 7"

Iolo volunteers that they will help her to clear up and then take the children with them so that she can have some peace;  “Then, when you’re ready, come over and we’ll have Christmas lunch.”

"How are we supposed to cook?"

This does not go down well with Tyler;  “How are we supposed to cook with a houseful of kids?” he complains, and Iolo irritably tells him to shut up.

(The new) Seren celebrates her birthday

Then they sing happy birthday to Seren,

Tyler is unenthusiastic

in Tyler’s case with very little enthusiasm, and Greta seems rather disinterested by it all.

Kelly is awe-stricken . . .

At Y Plas, the party are shown to their table, but the shine is taken off the occasion

. . . until she sees this familiar face

when they see Ieuan Griffiths sitting alone at another table.   “Look who’s here!” Kelly groans,

"They've stuck me over here"

and he complains that they have got a big table with plenty of room, whereas he has been pushed into the corner.

Jason looks as if he might invite Griffiths to join them,

"Don't . . . you . . . dare!"

but Kelly growls at him, “Don’t you dare!” and Anita is adamant that they are not going to let him spoil their special day.

Amanda would like to sit next to Kelly;

"I want to be as close to my daughter as I can"

“I want to be as close as I can to my daughter today,” she says and Kelly winks at Jason.

Domesticated Dylan is washing-up . . .

Megan’s kitchen, Dylan is now doing the washing-up,

. . . while Megan has dozed off

while Megan is having a sleep after her traumatic morning.

He gently covers her . . .

He smiles and picks up a throw with which to cover her,

. . . but she awakens

but she awakens with an apology for nodding off.

"Christmas lunch can do that"

He says that Christmas lunch can do that, and is now putting on his hoodie.

Megan recalls that this is the second Christmas they have spent together;  “Only the circumstances are very different this year.”   He hopes that he will also see her next year,

"You must repent to start with"

and she remarks, “The thing with forgiveness is that you must repent to start with before forgiving yourself – and before asking for the forgiveness of others – and God.”

"I'd like you to keep this a secret"

He says that he has to go now, and asks her to keep this a secret;

"What good would it do to tell anyone?"

she wonders what good it would do to tell anyone.   He leaves the house,

She returns to her slumbers

and she sinks back into the armchair.

Jinx and Arwen have reached North Wales and found that no-one is at home in Val’s house, Pant y Gwyn

"What are you doing here?"

but suddenly the door opens and Val demands what they are doing there.

“We’ve come to see Ffion – as it’s Christmas,” answers Jinx,

"It's boring!"

and Arwen grumbles that she is bored.

"I heard you were back on the scene"

“Nesta mentioned that Ffion said you were back on the scene,” comments Val, “She didn’t tell me herself, though –

"I would tell her some home truths!"

scared I would tell her some home truths!”

"He's nice – not like some people!"

Arwen sticks up for Jinx, telling her Gran not to be horrible to him;  “He’s nice – not like some people!”   They are told that Ffion went to see Nesta hours ago,

"She's do anything to avoid spending time with her mother!"

and Val moans that she would do anything to avoid spending time with her mother.

They would like to wait for Ffion to return, but are informed by Val that she is not well and cannot have anyone in the house, but does invite Arwen to come in.

"You've got Wi-Fi, haven't you?"

“You’ve got Wi-Fi, haven’t you?” Arwen immediately asks, and when told that they have,

In she goes to take advantage of it

she disappears inside, while Jinx returns to the car.

They head back to number 7

Tyler and Iolo go back to number 7 with Gwern, Greta and Seren, Tyler complaining all the way.   “It’s only for a few hours – and I don’t want to argue, not today,” says Iolo.   “Gwern, do you want a game of monopoly?”

"A game of poker, is it?"

He says that he would prefer a game of poker, and they go into the house,

Dylan is waiting until the coast is clear . . .

while Dylan is lurking round the corner at the other end of the alley.

. . . then he continues on his way

He pulls up his hood once again.

Jinx knocks on the door

Jinx arrives at another house and knocks on the door;  he is very surprised when Cai Rossiter opens it,

"What are you doing here?"

and demands, “What are you doing here?”   Jinx had been told that Ffion was there with Nesta.

Cai maintains that Ffion has gone out with the kids, on their new bikes – she borrowed Nesta’s old one.

"It was supposed to be a surprise"

Jinx said that the visit was supposed to be a surprise, and would like to wait for Ffion to come back,

"I'm just on my way out"

but Cai maintains that he is on his way out, so Jinx says that he will return to Arwen.

Jinx has his doubts, so will stay put

He is nevertheless suspicious, and when he reaches the car, he starts the engine, but then changes his mind and stops it again, deciding to wait.

Dani is enjoying some peace and quiet . . .

Dani is sleeping on the sofa when another intruder appears in the Deri flat,

. . . but Dylan has crept in

this time in the form of Dylan.
