23 December 2021

DJ is concerned . . .

Next morning, DJ comes into the farmhouse, looking worried,

. . . and calls to Eileen

and calls for Eileen, but there is no reply.   The teapot and a loaf of bread are on the table;

Then he tries to contact her

he sits down and gets out his phone to call her number.

She is at Maes-y-Deri . . .

Eileen has gone to Maes-y-Deri, and as soon as she walks in through the door, she receives the call, but rejects it.

. . . where Kath appears fed up

Kath says that she is ‘great’, without much feeling,

"Would you like to come back to work in the shop?"

and is invited to come back to work in the shop, as Colin has resigned.

This comes as a surprise to Kath, and Eileen explains that he wants to help Britt in the chip shop.

"You're looking for someone full-time, then?"

“You’re looking for someone full-time then?” says Kath;  Brynmor implores her to discuss it, because they have a lot of plans, but Kath simply enquires how much Eileen is paying.

She is told that it will be the same as last time, and as someone is needed straightaway, Kath can see her opportunity,

"I wanted to go somewhere today"

despite Brynmor reminding her that he wanted to go somewhere today.

“Yes – if I get the same pay as Colin,” Kath decides,

"As much as Colin?"

and when Eileen hesitates, she adds, “After all, Brynmor and I have plans.”   Eileen has little choice but to agree,

"You want to go back to work"

and Brynmor cannot believe that Kath wants to go back to work full-time.   “At the moment – yes!” she tells him, and Eileen leaves the house.

The 'snooping' DI is back from his run"

DI Wilkinson comes in through the back door of his house after another run

He has a look to see what is going on next door

and opens the laptop on the kitchen table, which is showing the spy camera image of the Deri flat next door.

He can see that Dani is speaking to Dylan on the phone;  “Yes, everything’s fine – just hectic.   Yes, Gabriel’s great.”

The words 'visiting order' make him look

Wilko gets a glass of water as she continues, “I’ve sorted out the visiting order,” which attracts his attention.

"I've told you I've tried – she refused"

“You want me to do what?” she demands, “Why don’t you do it yourself?   I told you I’ve tried – she refused.   She doesn’t want to see you again.   Of course I want you out – it’s just not fair that you’re asking me.

"Fine – just don't expect too much"

“Fine – just don’t expect too much.”

Wilko takes a close interest

Wilko is listening to this with considerable interest.

Brynmor is not very happy

Brynmor is sitting rather disconsolately in the Deri, as Sioned is discussing her plans with Cassie;

"Brynmor was on the planning committee for years"

“Have you had a word with Brynmor?   He was on the planning committee for years – have a word with him before you spend money on a village meeting,” Cassie advises.

Sioned goes over to enquire

Sioned immediately goes over to Brynmor;  “Cassie said you used to be on the planning committee,” she says.

He assumes this is about the plans for Penrhewl;

"A word to the wise – start small"

“Don’t get me wrong – the plans are great – but a word to the wise – start small.

Sioned listens to his sage advice

“Put in a new application for just the shop and the café.   Once that’s been approved, extend the project.

"They have contacts o the council"

“Use Morris and Brothers, Cwrtmynach – they have contacts on the council.”

"Thank you very much!"

Sioned is very grateful for the advice, and will put it into action.

"I owe you a holiday in the chalets!"

“Thank you for the tip – I owe you a holiday in the chalets!” Sioned tells Cassie,

"But don't breathe a word to Mam"

“But don’t breathe a word about this to anyone – especially Mam.   I don’t want anyone to spoil the business strategy.”

Cassie's promise does not mean a lot

Cassie promises she will not say a word, but with her track record, there are considerable doubts.

Iolo is helping out with the children

Dani has gone to see Jaclyn at number 10, and says that Iolo is helping out to give her a break;  “But I can’t rely on friends to help me out for ever.

"It would be easier with Dylan around"

“It would be easier with Dylan around.”

"You'll have to wait a long while for that"

Jaclyn replies that she is going to have to wait for that.

"Not if you withdraw your statement"

“Not if you withdraw your statement,” Dani goes on,

"No chance, Dani!"

but Jaclyn makes it very clear there is absolutely no chance of that.

"Say you can't remember what happened"

“Say you can’t remember what happened,” Dani pleads, “And you wouldn’t send an innocent man to jail.”

"I thought I'd knocked some sense into you!"

Jaclyn is very much aware that he has put her up to this;  “You know what?   I thought I’d knocked some sense into you!”

"He is the baby's father"

Dani reminds her that Dylan is the baby’s father.   Jaclyn asks, “So you’ll forgive him for everything, will you?

"Are you going to forgive Garry as well?"

“Garry is the father of the other two – are you going to forgive him as well?   You’re under strain – you’re not thinking straight, and that’s completely natural – they call it ‘baby brain’.

Is she getting through to Dani?

I could throttle Dyl for taking advantage of you like this!   If he really cared about you and Gabriel, he’d leave you alone, not put you under pressure!   But there we are – that’s what he’s like –

"He always gets in here!"

he always gets in here!” she says, tapping her head.   Just look after yourself – and the children.   They’re your family now – you don’t need those men.

"You deserve so much better"

You deserve so much better.”

"He won't tell me any more, Cassie"

Kath explains the situation to Cassie outside the shop;  “He won’t tell me any more – he’s taken the photo back to the lock-up now and I have to forget about it.”

"Are you sure he's not married?"

Cassie asks if she is sure that he is not married, and is told that he sounded genuine, “Or he might be good actor – why can’t he share it with me?”

"It may be too painful"

Cassie suggests that it may be too painful – everyone experiences things like that, but Kath demands what she is supposed to do;  “Just accept it?”   She is told that she should do that, if she can.

"What if I can't accept it?"

“And what if I can’t?” Kath replies.   Cassie advises she is going to have to find her own way through this.

Eileen counts the jars

At Penrhewl, Eileen is counting the jars of preserves when DJ comes in;  she explains why she went out early, to sort out the shop.

"You weren't trying to avoid me, then?"

“You weren’t trying to avoid me, then?” he asks, “Because of yesterday.”

"The kiss for being a good friend"

“Oh, the kiss, you mean – the kiss I gave you to thank you for being a good friend,” she says, dismissively,

"Is that all it was?"

and he wants to know if that is all it was.   She asks, “What do you expect me to say?   That I have feelings for you,

"We could have given things a go?"

“and if it wasn’t for Sioned, we could have given things go?

"I don't think we should discuss this again"

“I don’t think we should discuss this again.”

Just as well Sioned did not come in a couple of minutes earlier

At that moment Sioned arrives, in a more conciliatory mood this time;  “All right, I’m not here to argue,” she begins, “I have a compromise for you in relation to the plans.

"I'd like to go back to the original idea"

“I’d like to go back to the original idea and apply for a café and a shop – I’ll forget about the chalets.   I don’t want to ruin our relationship – that’s more important to me than anything else.”

Eileen seems to believe her

Eileen appear to have been taken in by this, but DJ seems more sceptical;

"Do you still want to open a shop and café with me?"

“Do you still want to open a shop and café with me?” Sioned asks, and as expected her mother agrees that is exactly what she wants – the chance for them to work together.

DJ comments that that is really great, and suggests that if Sioned wants to move back to the farm,

"I'm willing to go back tot he caravan"

he is willing to go back to the caravan.   “No, I’m all right where I am, thanks,” Sioned replies,

"I have such a laugh with Jinx"

“I have such a laugh with Jinx.   We do a lot together – he’s funny, handsome –

"We've really clicked"

“we’ve really clicked!”   All this is of course aimed at DJ,

DJ will get back to work

who says that he had better go and deal with the sheep.

"No, I don't fancy Jinx"

As soon as he has gone, Sioned remarks, “Before you ask, no, I don’t fancy Jinx – but DJ doesn’t have to know that.”

"You could do a lot worse, you know"

Her mother agrees that she is right about Jinx – he is handsome and a good laugh;  Sioned could do a lot worse.

"I'm happy being single"

“Mam, please – I’m happy being single – and when these plans are approved, I’ll be far too busy for any man,” she confidently predicts.

The customers seem to be voting with their feet

In the Deri, Cassie is apologising to a customer who complained about the quality of the beer;

"That's the third complaint today"

she tells Tyler, “That’s the third customer to complain about the beer today!

"Take that bike back to the garage"

“Do me a favour – you can have a bowl of chips on the house – take that bike back to the garage to the Chief Executive!”

"He won't be happy"

Tyler is about to do so, warning that Mark will not be happy, when the man in question arrives;

"Don't touch that!"

“Don’t touch that!” he orders, “It attracts interest!”

"All it does is take up space!"

Cassie insists that all it does is to take up the space of one of their best tables;  she adds, caustically, “But that won’t be a problem at the rate we’re losing customers.”

"You don't speak to the chief exec like that!"

Mark admonishes her for speaking to the chief exec like that,

"The beer is like cat's pee!"

but she continues, “You have to face it – the takings are down, they hate the menu and the beer is like cat pee!”

"As you're such an expert . . ."

Mark counters with, “As you’re such an expert, perhaps you should be the Chief Executive!”   Both Cassie and Tyler look defiantly at him,

He cannot even 'manage' to get his badge off

so he concludes, “If that’s how you feel, I don’t have a choice but to resign!” struggling to remove his badge.

"The best CEOs listen to their staff"

Cassie points out that she does not have the skills to be a Chief Executive, but that he needs to listen to his staff;  “The best CEOs in the world listen to their staff.”

"If it collapses, it's your fault, understand?"

Mark sneers that he will listen to his staff, “But if the business collapses, it’s your fault, understand?”   As he prepares to wheel the bike outside, Cassie invites him to come back later for a drink, and is pleased to be rid of both him and the machine.

Tyler follows him out

As he heads towards the garage, Tyler follows him,

"Cassie doesn't understand people"

and he complains, “Cassie’s problem is that she doesn’t understand people – it takes customers time to adapt to change.”

"She's concerned she soon won't have any customers"

Tyler points out that she is more concerned that she will soon not have any customers.

“Look at the garage now – a couple of months ago, it’s where you would go for and MOT or to fix your brakes,” Mark stresses, “Now it’s where you come for a electric bike.”

"They're all sold online these days"

Tyler reminds him that he is not making much profit, and he believes that a lot more of them are sold online — that is the big thing.

"What is this – 'Pick on Mark Jones Day'?"

“What is this –  Pick on Mark Jones Day?” Mark grumbles, “And I’m not going back for a pint!”

"The beer you ordered is nice"

“Shame – I don’t know why people are complaining – the beer you ordered is nice!” Tyler comments.

Kath is back after her day's work . . .

Kath arrives back at Maes-y-Deri after work to find Brynmor standing quietly in the kitchen;

. . . and found it exhausting

“I’d forgotten how tiring a day’s work can be,” she sighs.

"You can always go back to being 'a Lady of Leisure'"

He advises that she can always resign and go back to being ‘a lady of leisure’ any time she wants.

"I like seeing different people"

“No, I quite like going out, seeing different people – and anyway, if I work hard enough,

"I'll deserve that holiday, won't I?"

“I’ll deserve that holiday, won’t I?”   He is surprised that she is going on holiday and wonders with whom.

"With you, hopefully"

“With you, hopefully,” she replies, “Rhith y Coed Hotel and Spa – you still want to go, don’t you?”

“Oh, Kath – of course I do!” he assures her,

"I'd started to think you didn't want to be with me"

“I’d started to think that you don’t want to be with me.”

She admits that she is still very upset, and cannot understand why he will not discuss it with her, but she has to respect his decision, because she trusts him;

"I hope, one day, you'll feel you can tell me"

“But I hope, one day, you’ll feel you can tell me.”

In the Deri, Dani asks if Wilko is all right;

Wilko has been getting flak about Dylan

“I am now,” he replies, “There was a guy shouting at me outside, because Dylan’s charges have been dropped.   Are you OK about that?”   She says that it will not make much difference,

"He's bound to get a long sentence"

because he is bound to get a long sentence for shooting his sister.

"Why did you have to send Garry to jail?"

Britt, who has been sitting silently nearby, suddenly gets up and demands, “Why did you have to send Garry to jail, just because of that dog?”   Dani points out that she did not send him to jail,

"He broke the law, Britt"

but he broke the law.   “No – you could have dropped the charges – do you have any idea what this has done to our family?

"Aaron would never have gone off the rails if Garry was here!"

Aaron would never have gone off the rails if Garry was here!”

"Aaron is the one destroying his life – and Gwern's!"

Dani emphasises that Aaron is the one destroying his life, “And Gwern’s, too!   Don’t you realise kids are picking on him because Aaron’s his cousin?   Everyone thinks the Monks are fascists, Britt!   I’m really sorry, but I don’t want Aaron anywhere near Gwern.”

"Britt seems to have been silenced

Britt does not have anything to say to this, but walks out of the pub.   Wilko tells Dani to leave it, and she is going upstairs.

"Do you want company?"

“Do you want company?” he asks;

An almost imperceptible nod

she almost imperceptibly nods,  and he follows her,

Nothing misses Cassie's eagle eye

carefully watched by Cassie, who shakes her head.

"Britt didn't deserve that"

Upstairs, Dani regrets what she had said;  “She didn’t deserve that.”

"You're only protecting Gwern"

Wilko says that Dani is only protecting Gwern, and she groans, “He’s having such a tough time at school.   That’s what their story will be, isn't it?

"They'll live under Garry's and Dylan's shadow"

“Him, Gabriel and Seren will live under Garry’s and Dylan’s shadow.”

He argues that the children have her, and she laughs, “Yeah – because I’m a real rôle model!

"Three kids, two different fathers – both in jail!"

“Three kids, two different fathers – and they’re both in jail!

"I just want a normal life"

“I just want a normal life – with the children and people who don’t break the law.”

"There's no reason you can't have that"

The DI tells her there is no reason she cannot have that;  she does not have to see Garry and Dylan again, but she points out that they are the children’s fathers.

"Work out what you want"

“Why don’t you take this opportunity to work out what you want, without worrying about the Monks or Dylan and the family?” he asks her.

She cannot remember the last time she did that, so he concludes that now is the time;

"If I can do anything to help, just ask"

“If I can do anything to help, in any way, just ask.”   He walks towards her as he continues, “I’d like to help you, Dani.”

She is initially apprehensive

She looks rather apprehensive, but then takes a step towards him,

Here they go!

and again it appears that another kiss is imminent.

But, no – it is interrupted by Dylan

However, in the nick of time, there is the sound of a mobile phone and she sees that Dylan is calling her once more.   Wilko thinks that he had better be leaving, so she rejects the call

"Would you like to come over for dinner?"

and enquires, “If you’re free one night, would you like to come over for dinner?   After I’ve put the kids to bed, obviously.”   Seeing his hesitation, she adds, “Or not, that’s fine.”

"I'd like that – thanks"

He answers, “I’d like that – thanks.   Text me.”

She collects her thoughts

After a moment’s thought, she picks up the phone again and rings Dylan back.

Are they allowed phones in there?"

We see him, for the first time in ages, sitting in his cell, with his mobile phone, which buzzes.   “Have you spoken to Jaclyn?” he immediately asks,

"Jaclyn's not going to change her story"

and is told by Dani that she is not going to change her story.

"I don't think it's a good idea to come and see you"

“I’ve been thinking as well,” Dani goes on, “I don’t think it’s a good idea to come and see you,”

"What's happened?"

so he wants to know what has happened.   “I need a break from everything,” she says, and abruptly terminates the call.

“Dani!   Dani!” he shouts down the phone,

"Did I do the right thing?"

then as Dani is wondering whether she has done the right thing, he dials another number.   “Yes, it’s me – I need that favour now!

"I have to get out of here!"

“I have to get out of here!”
