28 December 2021

Siôn is unusually attired

Siôn, wearing a dressing gown, makes a morning cup of tea in number 7, he finds that Tesni is videoing him on her phone and giggling childishly.

"You can't use that"

“It’s for Cwm Ni,” she chuckles, and he forbids her to use that video.

"Let's make the next edition a bit more raunchy!"

“Let’s make the next edition a bit more raunchy!” she suggests, “You didn’t mind raunchy last night!”

"Not after you started reading poetry to me"

He confesses that he could not help it, “Not after you started reading poetry to me – I knew you would enjoy that volume I gave you for Christmas.”   Tesni had not suspected that poetry could be such a ‘turn-on’.

Jaclyn comes upon this strange sight . . .

Then Jaclyn comes downstairs and Siôn feels rather self-conscious;

. . . and he feels rather self-conscious

he says that they were just discussing the next edition of Cwm Ni.   “I hope you don’t mind that I stayed over last night?” and Jaclyn busies herself tidying the cushions.

Tesni explains that they had a lock-in last night,

"I'll have a quick shower before opening the shop"

and Siôn confesses that he was in no state to walk home;  “So . . . if you’ll excuse me, I’ll just have a quick shower before opening the shop.”   He disappears upstairs,

"I hope you don't mind, Mam"

and Tesni hopes that her mother does not mind, apologising for the mess.

Jaclyn objects to the lack of milk

Jaclyn is most dismayed to find the one-pint milk bottle empty, and is informed, “Oh, yeah – Siôn had some cereal after we came back last night.”

"I want some coffee!"

Her mother snarls that she wants some coffee, and angrily goes out of the house, as Tesni assures her that last night was a one off, then looks again at the video and laughs.

Hywel is back from a run

Hywel arrives home after a run and finds Rhys sitting at the table, with his head in his hands;

Rhys is in a state of despair

“No pain, no gain – that’s what they say, isn’t it?” says Hywel,

"What are your plans today?"

but receives no reply.   “What are your plans today?” he asks, and when Rhys remain silent,

"We can't carry on like this"

he goes on, “We can’t carry on like this.”

"I invited him over, Iol"

Iolo is at the Deri flat and is informed by Dani, “Last night at eight o’clock, just as I’d settled Gabriel, he texted to ask if I was free – and then I invited him over!   He’s been helping me with this Dylan stuff.”

"With candles and everything?"

Iolo assumes that it will be candles and everything.

"Help me find Seren's teddy"

“Help me find Seren’s teddy,” Dani asks him, and Iolo is confident that she will be fine when she sees the day that he and Tyler have organised for her and the kids.   He enquires how Gabriel slept last night,

"I must look terrible"

and she imagines that after the disturbed night she has had, she must look terrible.

She greatly appreciates Iolo and Tyler looking after them all;  he tells her it is important she should have a break.

"There he is!"

Then, in the laundry basket, he discovers the missing Tedi.

Gwern is still not speaking

Gwern is told to help Iolo, but simply marches out of the flat without a word.

Dani hopes she is doing the right thing

Dani looks apprehensive.

Of course, the DI is watching her

Next door, the DI is watching what is happening in the flat as Dani takes a letter from a drawer and places it on the table;

"That looks interesting"

Wilko zooms in the camera to take a closer look,

Dani checks her make-up . . .

while Dani is checking her make-up.

. . . and he takes a closer look

The letter is from HM Prison and Probation Service.

Dani seems to be in a hurry

Dani hurries from the Deri, past Jaclyn, who is drinking her cup of coffee outside, and notices Hywel, walking past the chippy.

"Hywel – long time, no see"

“Hello – long time, no see,” Jaclyn calls to him, and admits that her Christmas was rather odd, the first one without Gerwyn, Guto and Dylan.

"Like us, with no Izzy"

Hywel comments that it was the same for them, without Izzy.

Rhys did not spend Christmas with them,

"Siôn White forcing you to play Welsh Scrabble"

and she remarks, “At least you didn’t have Siôn White forcing you to play Welsh Scrabble – and things weren’t much better this morning.

"Mr White in Tes' dressing gown!"

They came back in the early hours and this morning there he was, Mr White, sitting there in Tes’ dressing gown!   On top of that, there was no milk left – well, as long as she’s happy.”

"You're a good mother, remember"

Hywel says that she is a good mother, and must remember that;  before she goes back inside the Deri,

"I've made a special Thai green curry"

she asks him, “Do you like Thai food?   I’ve made a special Thai green curry, with jasmine rice, just for you!   See you later.”

This perks Hywel up

He likes the sound of that.

"Ffion must have been glad to see Arwen"

Inside the Deri, Rhys goes to sit with Jinx, and is sure that Ffion must have been glad to see Arwen at Christmas;  “She was – I think,” Jinx replies, doubtfully, “I feel sorry for the little one –

"She's afraid Ffion will never come home"

“I think she’s afraid Ffion will never come home, and I think she’s confused about her father – it’s not long since she found her birth certificate.   She saw my name on it, but says that Macs is her father, so it must be confusing.”

"Families – you can't choose them"

“Families,” growls Rhys, “You can’t choose them.”

"At least, we know who our parents were"

Jinx points out that at least they know who their parents were.

"Not quite"

“Not quite,” Rhys groans, “Mam died when I was three – I don’t remember her.”

"Your father must have talked about her"

Jinx heard about that;  he is sure that his father must have talked about her and shown him pictures,

Rhys regrets that this was not the case

but Rhys sadly shakes his head.

"Family isn't one thing or the other"

“Like I told Arwen, family isn’t one thing or the other,” Jinx goes on, “There are all kinds – your blood relatives, the family that forms around you.

"Family are people who support you"

“In my opinion, family are people who support you, no matter what.”

"These are just your fantasies?"

Behind the bar, Tesni is looking at the manuscript of Cassie’s next novel;  “So the novel just contains your fantasies?” she gasps, “They sound so real!”

"Pedro is based on someone I knew"

Cassie points out that the character Pedro is based on someone she knew.   “And that scene on the balcony – is that real too?” Tesni demands.

“Well, are few things are . . . but we were a bit drunk,” Cassie confesses.

"And running naked through the forest?"

Then Tesni excitedly asks about running through the forest naked, and is told to keep her voice down.

"I will share a secret with you . . ."

“But I will share a secret with you,” Cassie adds, “Chapter three, the character Joe –

"The real Joe has stood here several times"

“the real Joe has stood here several times.   I’d give him eight and a half, perhaps nine.”

Tesni cannot imagine that someone as cool as him has visited the Deri, and Cassie would like to attract more trendy customers.

"Perhaps we could come up with something"

“If we put our heads together, perhaps we could come up with something.”

Tesni is still anxious to find out who the real Joe is, but is informed, “If you can get the trendy punters in – perhaps, just perhaps, I’ll tell you.”

"Have you taken their orders yet?"

Jaclyn comes in, stony-faced, and demands whether her daughter has taken orders from Rhys and Jinx;

"Come on – chop, chop!"

“Come on, chop-chop!” she exclaims

Looks suspiciously like Roath Lock Studios

The scene changes to a prison;

Dani hurries to the entrance . . .

Dani gets out of her car and hurries to the entrance,

. . . but she is under surveillance . . .

watched by a motorcyclist who has just arrived,

. . . by the enigmatic DI

none other than Wilko.

"You look stunning"

Dylan looks astonished when he enters the visiting room and sits down opposite Dani;  he has the customary smug grin on his face.   “You look stunning,” he says, but she does not reply.

"I really enjoyed seeing you and Gabriel"

“I’m sorry that I didn’t stay longer at Christmas – I really enjoyed seeing you and meeting Gabriel – at last.”

Dani does not say a word

She still remains silent, so he asks what is wrong.

"I don't want you being part of our lives"

“You shouldn’t have come to see me,” she hisses, “I don’t want you being part of our lives.”

"I thought we understood each other"

He had been under the impression that they understood each other, but she shakes her head;  “No, because you wangled your way into my head – never again!”   He insists that he loves her – that is why he came to see her, and Gabriel needs to get to know him.

"You're toxic, Dylan – he's better off without you!"

Dani growls, “You’re toxic, Dylan!   He’s better off without you.

"Next time, I'll phone the police!"

Don’t try to visit us again, because I promise you, next time, I’ll phone the police!”

And with that, off she goes

He cannot believe what he is hearing;  she abruptly gets up and leaves the visiting room.

Later, Wilko is back at the flat

Much later, the DI comes into the Deri flat as Dani is folding some washing;  “I wasn’t expecting you until later,” she says,

"Sorry – my shift has been changed"

and he apologises that his shift has been changed, which disappoints her.

“Being a policeman – having to cope with the unexpected,” he says, “But I do have some time now, if you’re free for a cup of tea.”

"Would you like something to eat?"

She invites him to sit down, and suggests that, as she has not had any lunch, would he like something to eat.

“It won’t be as fancy as what you would have had tonight,” she adds, and then her phone rings, with what she finds is a call from Dylan.

She deletes the contact from her phone

She quickly deletes his number from her phone.

"What's that you're reading?"

Downstairs in the bar, Tesni is still reading the manuscript, and her mother demands what it is;

"It's so gripping, I can't put it down"

“It’s Cassie’s latest novel – it’s so gripping I can’t put it down,” says Tesni, and is reprimanded that she should not be reading while she is working.

"And another thing I'm not happy with . . ."

“You’re not supposed to read during your shift – and another thing I’m not happy with is . . .”

"What is it, Mam?"

She stops there, and Tesni wants to know what it is.   “I’m happy about you and Siôn, if that’s what you want, but if Siôn stays overnight, do your Mam a favour

"Keep the bedroom chitchat in the bedroom!"

“and keep the bedroom chitchat in the bedroom!”

"Sorry – it won't happen again"

Tesni assures her that it will not happen again.

"My family can just about use a knife and fork"

After their lunch, Dani apologises that they do not have any napkins;  “My family can just about use a knife and fork – kitchen roll does the job, though.   Can I get you anything else?”

He replies that it was perfect;

"Would you believe beans on toast is my favourite?"

“Would you believe me if I said beans on toast is my favourite?”   She does not know the answer to that,

"You don't say much, do you?"

and remarks that he does not say much, but the moment is spoiled by Gabriel’s cries.

He finds the recently deleted number . . .

While she goes to him, the DI has a crafty look at her phone, finds Dylan’s number, which she recently deleted,

. . . and captures it on his phone

and records it with his phone.

Dani returns with Gabriel, who needs changing,

"I have to go into work – now"

and Wilko makes the excuse that he has just received a phone call – he has to go to work now and thanks her for lunch.

"Oh, yeah – couldn't wait until tonight?"

As soon as he has gone, Iolo comes in, commenting, “Oh yeah – couldn’t wait until tonight?”

She replies that tonight is off, as he is going to work;  “There were no candles, but we had a chat over beans on toast – I say chat, but he doesn’t say much.”   Iolo remarks that he must be the dark and mysterious type,

"Where can I find Gwern's earphones?"

then asks where he can find Gwern’s earphones,

"Up there on the the shelf"

and she directs him to the pot on the shelf.

In the process, he accidentally knocks something else off the shelf,

"Where are your shopping bags, then?"?

and wonders where Dani’s shopping bags are.   She answers that she did not go shopping;

"I wanted to do some 'life admin'"

“I wanted to do some life admin – boring, but, you know,” she says, rather cryptically.   He had better go, as he left Tyler painting with the kids, and if he does not go now, who knows what might happen.

"I'll go to the police if that's what you really want"

Rhys arrives back at Llwyncelyn and his father agrees that he will go to the police if that is what Rhys really wants;  “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

"Why didn't you ever show me a photo of Mam?"

“Why didn’t you ever show me a photo of Mam?” demands Rhys, “Or talk about her properly?

"All you said was she was 'a slag'!""

“All you said was that she was ‘a slag’!”

"I've alreday apologised for that"

Hywel says he has already apologised for that.

"Only because I've given you a hard time"

“You’re pretending to be sorry because I’ve given you a hard time,” Rhys growls,

"My conscience has been troubling me"

but his father protests that his conscience has been troubling him.   “Prove it, then!” Rhys challenges him, and he agrees that he will go to the police, but warns his son that he could be without a single parent.

"I'd prefer that to living with a father who's a coward!"

“I’d prefer that to living with a father who’s a coward!” Rhys informs him, then goes upstairs.

"I'm no coward"

Hywel simply stands, open-mouthed, muttering that he is not a coward.

Wilko has found where the problem originated . . .

The DI is looking at re CCTV footage, in order to establish why the connection was suddenly broken;

. . . suddenly the screen went blank

he finds that it happened when Iolo reached up to the shelf

He will have to take the necessary action

and realises that something will have to be done.

Hywel walks towards the police station . . .

Hywel walks towards the door of the police station, where a uniformed constable is coming out.

. . . hesitates . . .

As he plucks up the courage to go in, his phone sounds with a text message from Jaclyn;

. . . then is tempted with a curry . . .

“I’ve kept you a curry – coming over?”

. . . and changes his plan

This is just the excuse he wanted, and he turns round to walk away from the police station.
