Wilko finishes his run |
DI Wilkinson is just coming back from his morning run when Dani emerges from the door of the Deri, shouting for Gwern and Seren to hurry;
Dani is unusually clad |
we can see that she is wearing slippers. He asks if she needs some help,
"We're late for school!" |
but she simply snaps, “We’re late for school!” and again calls the children.
"If I can help in any way" |
“Is everything all right?” he continues, “If I can help in any way,” but she shows no interest so he walks away. The children have still not appeared.
"I heard about this scholarship" |
Gaynor is passing the shop when she meets Eifion and Mathew; “I heard about this scholarship you’re organising in Izzy’s memory,” says Mathew, and Gaynor replies that she thought it would be a fantastic way of remembering her.
"Shame you're showing more respect now she's dead!" |
She finds Mathew’s next words disturbing; “Yes, lovely – it’s a shame you’re showing her more respect now that she’s dead!”
"I'm sorry you feel that way, Mathew" |
She is sorry that Mathew feels that way, and Eifion is surprised by his outburst.
"I didn't know you had it in you!" |
“I’m impressed – I didn’t know you had it in you!” he comments,
"Don't give in to her, either!" |
and Mathew says that he just could not help himself. Sioned is approaching along the street, so Eifion advises, “Don’t give in to her either!” then once again informs Sioned that there is no room in the flat.
"Go and play in the traffic, Eifion!" |
“Oh yes, I heard about that,” interrupts Eifion,
"See you about lunchtime" |
and Mathew agrees to go to the farm at lunchtime.
"Don't bring him with you!" |
Sioned warns him not to bring his cousin with him.
Gaynor arrives at the bookshop |
The door of the bookshop opens, and Siôn comments, “You’re very early this morning, Mrs Llywelyn.” Seeing her flustered appearance, he asks if anything is wrong.
"I've been given a harsh talking-to!" |
“No, nothing much,” she begins, then confesses, “Well, yes – I’ve just been given a harsh talking-to about the scholarship, by Mathew.
"If he's finding fault, everyone else will, too" |
“If he’s finding fault with me, everyone else will too.”
"Mathew is grieving" |
Siôn points out that Mathew is grieving, and does not mean what he said; “Oh, he does – and the thing is, he’s right, isn’t he?” groans Gaynor,
"I'm showing her a lot more respect now she's . . ." |
“I am showing Izzy a lot more respect now that she’s . . . than I did was she was here. I think I should forget everything about this scholarship.”
Siôn’s response to this is to suggest that he puts the kettle on;
Siôn temporarily closes the shop |
he turns the shop sign to ‘closed’ and remarks, “I don’t think I’ll make any profit in the next half an hour.”
Kath and Brynmor have been looking at the online details of a ‘dream house’, and he comments, “The rooms are big, but it’s a bit far, isn’t it?” On the other hand, Kath likes the garden.
Pub management is too much for Mark |
Mark comes in, still wearing his dressing down, and grumbling that he was exhausted last night.
"How about Bryn Gwyn?" |
“How about Bryn Gwyn? There’s a garden, a large shed,” Brynmor suggests, but Kath adds that there is no view,
"What are you talking about?" |
and Mark wonders what they are talking about.
His mother explains that they are looking for a house, to move into;
"Move from Maes-y-Deri? You're joking!" |
“What? Move from Maes-y-Deri? You’re joking!” he exclaims,
"We're deadly serious, Mark" |
but Brynmor emphasises that they are deadly serious. Kath finds a suitable candidate; “Right, ‘Heulfan’ – look at this – honestly, it’s beautiful – and the views! We’re going to see it this afternoon.”
"Whoa – what about me?" |
“Whoa – hold the boat!” protests Mark, “What about me? Where does that leave me?” His mother tells him he can come with them, as there is plenty of room,
"You never consulted me!" |
but he objects to the fact that he has not been consulted.
"You could always stay here, Mark" |
Brynmor has the answer; “You could always stay here, Mark. I will be buying the new house, so you could always stay here and pay rent to your mother.
"Right on top of the hill in Cwrtmynach" |
She is still very enthusiastic about this ‘Heulfan’; “It’s in a beautiful spot, right on top of the hill in Cwrtmynach, looking over the valley –
"It's better than that painting" |
“it’s better than that painting!” Brynmor adds that if Mark has any doubts and would like them to talk this through, but he can now see the advantages and tells them to go ahead,
Now he thinks it makes a lot of sense |
as he thinks it makes sense – a lot of sense.
Dani is back from school |
Dani is back from the school and is pushing Gabriel in his pram; as she passes the bookshop, she meets Iolo,
"How is Cwmderi's loudest baby?" |
who asks, “How is Cwmderi’s loudest baby?” She is surprised that he could hear Gabriel from the school gates, and he smiles, “I think half the village heard him – he’s certainly got a good pair of lungs! But look at him now – quiet as a little angel.”
"You do know you're wearing slippers?" |
Dani agrees that there is no halfway with this one, and then Iolo notices that she is still wearing her slippers.
"There was a time when that would embarrass me" |
She informs him, “I didn’t know that – you know, there was a time when that would have embarrassed me. I feel ancient, Iolo – and I’m not sleeping much either.”
"Have a nap, while 'Tom Jones' is quiet |
He advises her to go home and have a nap, while ‘Tom Jones’ is quiet.
A stranger is outside the chip shop |
A stranger peers through the windows of the chip shop;
"Rather early for fish and chips" |
Eifion is prowling and remarks that it is rather early for fish and chips.
"I'm having a look round the village" |
She replies that she is not hungry, and has just come for a look round the village.
"Fancy your chances, do you?" |
Colin comes from the direction of the shop to see what is going on; “Oh yeah – who’s she, then?” he asks, and Eifion has no idea. “Fancy your chances, do you?” is Colin’s next question;
"Get back to your vegetables, Col" |
he is told that he is like an old woman and should get back to his vegetables.
"It isn't something I've talked much about" |
As they drink their tea, Siôn is learning more of Gaynor’s problems; “It isn’t something I’ve talked much about,” she admits,
"Perhaps if I'd talked to Izzy" |
“Perhaps that’s part of the problem – if I’d talked to Izzy about the heart defect, she might still be here.”
"You said you were sure she didn't have it" |
Siôn comments that she just said she was sure Izzy did not have it; “Neither of them had the same symptoms that I did. Sorry, Siôn, you don’t want to hear my woes first thing in the morning,” she says,
"Hywel and I are not 'clicking' at the moment" |
“I’ve tried talking to Hywel, but we’re not ‘clicking’ at the moment.”
"It's easier to talk to people outside the family" |
He knows that sometimes it is easier to talk to people who are outside the family. She continues that things were difficult between her and Izzy from the start;
"I was young – in college with a baby" |
“I was young – in college with a baby – you know, things were hard. I think that clouded my attitude towards her – it was part of our relationship throughout.
"I don't think I loved her properly" |
“To tell you the truth – if I’m being honest – I don’t think I loved her properly. Not like a mother should love her child.” Siôn maintains that she is upset,
"You've been rattled by what Mathew said" |
and has been ‘rattled’ by what Mathew said. She replies, “No, these things have been in my head for so long –
"It's such a relief to talk to someone" |
“it’s such a relief to be able to talk to someone, and I think that’s why I’m finding it hard to mourn her properly.”
"You have to give yourself time, Gaynor" |
“You have to give yourself time – and you have to be kind to yourself,” Siôn recommends, “You don’t sound like a mother who didn’t love her daughter. The scholarship is proof of that.”
She finds this somewhat comforting |
This gives Gaynor some comfort.
"Where am I supposed to get my 'organic' potatoes?" |
Britt is speaking to Eifion on the phone; “I know you’ve been hurt, but where am I supposed to get my organic potatoes from now on at a decent price? Oh, you’re going back to Deri Fawr?”
"All right – come up" |
Then the buzzer sounds, “Hello – yes, who wants to know? All right –come up,” she says, and finishes the call to Eifion.
The detective constable comes upstairs |
The stranger comes upstairs and shows her police warrant card;
"Is Garry OK?" |
“What’s this about? Is Garry OK?” Britt demands, “Garry Monk, my brother.”
"I;m here to have a word with Aaron Monk" |

Out in Penrhewl's rolling acres |
Out in one of the fields at Penrhewl, with a crop of maize in the background, Mathew comments, “Fair play to you – you don’t do anything by halves.”
"No point doing anything by half measures, Math" |
Sioned replies that there is no point doing anything in half measures, unlike some.
“Mam’s against it – she has no vision at all, and I’m sure she’s poisoning DJ against me as well. But DJ doesn’t have any influence,
She is confident she can deal with her mother |
“and I know from years of experience how to deal with Mam,” she confidently asserts.
"Come back to me when you've got permission" |
Mathew suggests that she should come back to him when she obtains planning permission; “Come on, Math, I thought you had more vision then that!” Sioned complains,
"This could put APD on the map" |
“This could put APD on the map – don’t say you’re scared of Mam and DJ?
"I want it done by a local business" |
“Because I really want the work done by a local business – for the right price, so a sensible tender, please.
"It's time these fields made us some proper money" |
“For goodness’ sake, Math, it’s gorgeous here, but we can’t make a living out of the scenery – it’s time these fields made us some proper money.”
"I don't want to get caught between you and DJ" |
Mathew reiterates that he does not want to get caught between her and DJ; “Yes, I know,” she growls, “But this is business, OK? Come on, I want to show you the stream – I think it would make a lovely spot for barbecues.”
"You've been chatting on extremist websites" |
The detective is speaking to Aaron; “The fact is we have evidence that you’ve been chatting on extremist websites – and you went on the march in Swansea.” He demands what is the problem with that, and she points out it was a Fascist march.
"Have I broken the law?" |
He asks if he has broken the law, and is told that is a matter of opinion;
"What exactly do you think he's done?" |
Britt stops them there, demanding, “What exactly do you think he’s done?” The DC explains that she has the right to take his computer and phone with her, and Britt exclaims, “Don’t be soft!”
"According to anti-terrorism legislation . . ." |
“According to anti-terrorism legislation . . .” the constable begins,
"Come on – you've got the wrong boy here!" |
but is stopped by Britt, who insists that they have the wrong boy here. Undeterred, the DC continues, “I can take away any evidence with me that needs to be investigated – but I want to help you, not punish you, Aaron.”
Aaron tells his mother to be quiet,
"I'll go and get my laptop" |
and maintains, “I have nothing to hide, DC Stevens – I’ll go and get my laptop.”
He hands over his phone |
He takes out his phone and places it on the table.
"Oh, great – just what I wanted to avoid" |
As they return towards the farmhouse, Sioned groans, “Oh, great – just what I wanted to avoid,” as they see DJ the other side of the gate.
"What are you doing here, Math?" |
He wonders what Matthew is doing there, and is told by Sioned that he is helping her.
"Yeah – your building plans" |
“Yeah – your building plans,” says DJ, “You know Eileen’s against it?” Sioned replies that they have been for a nice walk down to the site,
"Mathew agrees it's the perfect location" |
and Mathew agrees that it is the perfect location. She is glad that she can rely on someone around there.
Mathew has had enough of this, and Sioned demands where DJ stands with these plans.
"It's rather dishonest, isn't it?" |
He just regards submitting the plans in Eileen’s name as rather dishonest.
"I'm not listening to you preaching about honesty!" |
“I’m not going to listen to you, of all people, preaching about honesty!” she snarls, and DJ returns to his work.
"You know how I feel about this, Sioned!" |
“Sioned, what are you doing? You know how I feel about this,” Mathew protests,
"I haven't done anything wrong" |
but she answers that she has done nothing wrong, and wants to leave the farm before her mother finds out she is there.
Sioned opens the gate |
She opens the gate, so that they can avoid the rather large puddle.
"I can take these away and then bring them back" |
DC Stevens advises Aaron that he has a choice; “I can take these away and bring them back after we’ve examined them, or you can come to the station with me.”
Britt sneers that this is a joke,
"We've got evidence, Mrs Evans" |
but is told, “We’ve got evidence that Aaron’s been involved with dangerous Fascist material online.”
Britt regards the whole thing as ridiculous and wants the officer to leave now;
"We can help you, Aaron" |
“We want to know why you’re talking to such people – we can help,” the DC goes on, “Mrs Evans, you haven’t quite understood the seriousness of the situation.”
"OK, you take them, then" |
Aaron is quite happy for the two items to be taken and then returned;
The DC leaves her card |
the DC leaves her card in case he wants to get in touch.
"Tara, DC Stevens" |
“Tara, DC Stevens,” he shouts as she leaves.
His mother wants to know what is going on,
"No, I don't want to talk to you – or to the pigs!" |
but he does not want to talk to her about it; “Or to the pigs!” He goes back to his room.
"Tedi is the problem – perhaps he's jealous" |
Iolo comes up to the Deri flat and is told to be quiet, as the baby is asleep; “Tedi is the problem – once I settle Gabriel down, he barks! I don’t know what’s wrong with him – perhaps he’s jealous.
"All I know is I'm shattered!" |
“All I do know is I’m shattered,” Dani sighs.
"I'm here to help you, Dani" |
Iolo says that he is there to help her,
"You'll do the morning feed for me?" |
and she gasps, “Oh – you’re willing to do the morning feed for me?”
He will take the children to school |
He says that it is nothing as useful as that, but he would just like to take Gwern and Seren to school; it will spare her dragging the pram out, and he is taking Greta anyway.
“I can see it now – your halo!” she exclaims, but not too loudly,
"Remember – wash your slippers" |
and he advises that she ought to wash her slippers.
"It was gorgeous, Mark" |
When they return from their house viewing, Mark is eager to hear their reaction. “It was gorgeous,” says his mother, but Brynmor adds that there is no rush to put in an offer yet,
"There are three more places to look at" |
as Tomos ac Ellis have three other places for them to look at.
"You should strike while the iron's hot, Mam" |
Mark recommends that they should strike while the iron is hot, but Kath says that it is a big step

and Brynmor proposes to go for a shower.
"You just can't wait, can you?" |
“You just can’t wait to get this place yourself,” Kath comments, but Mark alleges that he is only thinking of his mother.
"I know you too well, good boy" |
“I know you too well, good boy!” she says, knowingly.
Gaynor studies the laptop |
Gaynor is sitting alone at Llwyncelyn, looking at the laptop screen and the e-mail she has composed to the Western Post.

“Announcing the Esyllt Evans Scholarship,” it reads, and after taking a deep breath, she sends the message,
Yet another glass of red wine |
walks across the kitchen and pours herself a glass of red wine.
"To you, Esyllt!" |
She raises the glass in a toast, “To you, Esyllt.”
"Typical – picking on a young boy!" |
Britt is furious; “Typical – picking on a young boy instead of going after the big boys!” Colin cannot believe that Aaron is involved with Fascism
"I'll have a word with him now" |
and at that moment Aaron comes out of his room.
"Is there any basis to what they said?" |
“Aaron, sorry I wasn’t here earlier to help you out,” he says, “Now, listen – is there any basis to what they said? I want to help you.”
"DC Stevens said exactly the same thing" |
Aaron replies that it is strange DC Stevens said exactly the same thing.
"I can only help if you tell the truth" |
“But I can only help you if you tell the truth,” Colin goes on.
"What do you want to know, PC Col?" |
“OK, right, what do you want to know, PC Col?” Colin asks if he has been messing around with Fascists – extremists?
"Don't tell me you know something about the swastika" |
“They’re extremely dangerous people – I’m serious, Aaron, please! You must have learned about them in school, in history – about the awful things they did. Please don’t tell me you know something about who painted the swastika on Iolo’s house!”
Aaron looks st his mother |
Aaron looks at his mother,
"Yes, I do know" |
and agrees that he does know;
"I did it – so what?" |
he walks into the kitchen and informs them, “I did it – so what? I’m glad I did it.”
They are both shocked |
Both Colin and Britt are shocked. He turns, and it sounds as if he might have gone downstairs.
There is an intruder in the Deri flat . . . |
