Wilko calls at just the wrong time |
DI Wilkinson arrives at the Deri flat in the middle of ‘rush hour’, according to Dani, and he says he will call another time;
"Unless it's about Dylan" |
“Unless it’s about Dylan,” she adds, and can see from his expression that it is.
"There isn't enough evidence" |
“I’m not working on the case, so it’s not my place to say, but there isn’t enough evidence that he’s been selling drugs – not enough to prosecute him, anyway.” Dani asks if he is going to be released; “No, he’ll be prosecuted for shooting his sister,” Wilko assures her, “He won’t be back here for a while.”
"Good!" |
“Good!” snaps Dani, but he continues that if she is worried about other people and feels that she ever needs help or back-up,
"Just phone, any time" |
she should just phone, any time. Then she warns that the children will be late for school, so he leaves the flat,
Dani considers what this means |
as she thinks of the implications of this news.
Jinx catches Arwen by the fridge |
Arwen has still not left for school and says that she forgot her lunch box;
"I'll take you in the car" |
she is reprimanded by Jinx, who says that he will take her. “I’ll wait for you to get yourself a sandwich,” he says, as Sioned comes into the room,
Jinx stops her as she carries the pizzas |
but he stops Arwen when she is carrying a box of pizzas.
He demands whether she is feeding the five thousand,
"They line up to pay £1 each" |
and she agrees, “Well, sort of – they’re popular – the kids from year four and five line up to pay £1 each.”
"What – for cold pizza?" |
Jinx considers that rather extortionate for cold pizza, but she points out that they are special.
"You'll go far with an attitude like that" |
Sioned comments that she will go far with an attitude like that; however, Jinx wonders what her mother would say about it. “Nothing – because she’s miles away,” is Arwen’s answer, “And the teachers won’t snitch on us.”
"I'll give you some lunch money" |
He instructs her to put the box of pizzas on the table and he will give her some lunch money; “What about the boys in year four and five?” she asks. He decides that they will just have to starve, and urges her to get a move on.
"Thanks for your support, Sioned" |
Sioned is laughing about this, and Jinx thanks her for her support, sighing , “She’s far too much like her Mam!”
"How is Gwern coping?" |
Jaclyn has been called up to the Deri flat, and she asks Dani how Gwern is coping with everything. “All right, considering his mother and father are in prison,” says Dani,
"The news about Dylan" |
“I’m a bit shocked, the news about Dylan.”
Jaclyn has not heard this news, and is informed that they have dropped the drugs charges against him. “Whether he gets out depends on if they find him guilty of shooting you,” Dani goes on,
"Jaclyn, if you change your story . . ." |
“If you change your story . . .”
"He shot me!" |
Jaclyn makes it abundantly clear that she is not going to do so, and realises that is why Danny wanted her there; “He shot me!” she exclaims,
"You know how dangerous he can be!" |
“Come on – you know how dangerous he can be! Do you really want him back in your life?”
Dani’s only concern seems to be, “I’ve got three kids,
"It would be nice to have someone to protect me" |
“and it would be nice to have someone to protect me – those people are still out there!” Jaclyn regards that as even more reason to keep him in prison, out the way.
"Wouldn't Dylan want the chance to protect his son?" |
“Don’t you think Dylan would want the chance to protect his son?” asks Dani, and is emphatically told that she is better off without him. Dani pleads with Jaclyn to think about it; “Just put yourself in my position,”
Jaclyn simply walks out |
but she walks out without another word.
"Everything all right, Jaclyn?" |
Downstairs, in the bar, Cassie asks her if everything is all right. “Yes – you do remember that I’m not in until six?” says Jaclyn,
"Mam, I've got a stain on my blouse" |
and at that moment Tesni comes in, complaining to her mother that she has a stain on her blouse. Jaclyn has too much on her mind at the moment to worry about that and leaves the pub.
Cassie hopes that she is not expected to deal with the stain; however that is not the reason Tesni is there,
"Is it still OK for me to accept the job?" |
but rather to ask, “Is it still OK for me to accept the job?” Cassie simply wants to know when she can start,
"You don't want me to cook, do you?" |
and is told, “Now, if you like.” She finds it rather convenient that Tesni’s mother is not there at the moment, and Tesni is worried that she is going to be asked to cook.
"No – the fridge is full of meals" |
“No – the fridge is full of meals – get on the other side of the bar while I sort this stock out.”
Mark in his new guise as temporary manager |
Mark comes in, in his temporary manager uniform to make sure everything is present and correct. “It’s a good start for the new boss,” he says,
Cassie cannot believe it |
which puzzles Cassie. “Garry’s asked me to look after the place while he’s away – and things are going to change here for the better.”
"Do you work here?" |
He looks at Tesni and asks if she works there; “Right, I want you clear this bar
"Put nuts out along the bar, like this" |
“and put some nuts out along the bar, like this,” he instructs. Cassie looks flabbergasted.
"I shall have to look for a job and a flat" |
Jinx gets back to Cysgod y Glyn and is told that Sioned will have to look for a job and a flat; “Mam hasn’t been in touch, but there’s plenty of Cae Glas work I can get on with here.
"We're going to open a holiday centre" |
“We do have some big plans – we’re going to open a holiday centre.”
"I'll make a cup of tea" |
Jinx is very impressed, and is going to make a cup of tea.
"We have to find the money now" |
“Dreaming is the easy part – we have to find the money now,” Sioned continues, and Jinx asks if she is looking for investment.
"Let's hear your 'Dragon's Den' pitch, then" |
“Come on, then – let’s hear your ‘Dragon’s Den’ pitch,” he says;
"How much do you have to offer?" |
she wonders how much Mr Jinx Suleyman Meaden Jones has to offer. “More than you’d think,” he replies, “Don’t you believe me? Well, it’s your loss.”
"Six glamping pods, with hot tubs" |
She announces, “We’re looking for someone to invest in six glamping pods, with hot tubs and everything – the ones that look like something out of the Hobbit.
"Unless you've won on a scratchcard . . ." |
“One of them costs about £8,000 – so unless you’ve won on a scratchcard . . .”
"Would £50,000 do the job?" |
“So would £50,000 do the job?” he enquires, and Sioned would like to know what is going on. “I’ve recently received a nice inheritance – not far off what you’re looking for,” he advises.
"If I'd know that, I would have done a better job"
She answers that if she had known that, she would have done a better sales pitch; “I can get you some numbers if you’re serious – if you want to create local jobs and help the area economically.”
"But for now, I'm out" |
Jinx says it sounds great, but he wants something that he can throw his heart into; “I don’t want to give my money to someone else – I’ll keep you in mind, but for now, as Suleyman would say, I’m out.”
Sioned will not give up now |
Sioned still looks determined.
"I don't know what I'm going to tell Aaron" |
Jaclyn has gone to see Britt, who says that someone contacted her who claimed to know Aaron; “I don’t know how I’m going to tell him – the poor dab was convinced that Dylan was going to be released, and was going to find him.
"I'm worried about his mental health" |
“I’m worried about his mental health,”
"Dylan won't be released for a long time" |
Jaclyn stops her there; “He won’t be released for a long time.”
"What if the jury doesn't believe you?" |
Britt is sure that Dylan could be found not guilty if the jury does not believe her; “And then he’ll be back here, getting the young kids to sell his drugs again.”
"I have to do some Bacc work, Mam" |
Aaron comes in, maintaining that he has to do some Bacc [Welsh Baccalaureate Award] work;
"Well, you shouldn't be creeping round here, then" |
“You shouldn’t be creeping round here, listening to private conversations,” his mother tells him, but he reminds her that he does live there. “You’re supposed to be doing Bacc work, not slobbing in bed all morning,” she adds.
"Do you think he heard us?" |
When he goes back to his room, Britt wonders if he heard them talking, and decides, “I know who can sort this mess out.” She leaves the flat, and coincidentally Wilko is also leaving his house.
Kelly alters course . . . |
Kelly sees him and very conspicuously walks the other way;
. . . but the DI calls to her |
he calls to her, “I enjoyed your article on hate crimes.”
"Enjoyed? Not what I was aiming for" |
This is not quite the reaction she was aiming for, but thanks him just the same. “Have you ever considered joining the police?” he asks, “An investigative journalist needs the same skills as a detective –
"You'd enjoy the power a badge gives you" |
“you’d enjoy the power a badge gives you.”
Britt comes hurrying along; “Hey – you!” she shouts,
"Oh – what have I done now?" |
and Kelly wonders what she has done now.
"No – not you – I want to talk to him!" |
“No – not you – I want to talk to him!” she continues, “Will you talk to Aaron? Before you send some liaison, or whatever you call it, I want him to hear it from someone he knows.”
"Sorry, I'm on my way to work" |
The DI apologises that he is on his way to work,
"Come over after your shift, then" |
so is invited to come over after his shift, in that case.
"Is everything all right?" |
Mark is making a nuisance of himself, checking with customers that everything is all right, while Cassie remarks to Tesni, “I will be in jail before too long, for throttling Mark Jones!”
"More happy customers" |
Carrying his clipboard, he reports that he has more happy customers, but she points out they have only had coffee,
"You can't go wrong with coffee, Mark" |
and you cannot go wrong with coffee.
“What century does she live in?” Mark demands,
He issues instructions to Tesni |
“Tesni, I want you to check with customers that everything’s all right exactly 6 minutes after they get their order. I read it in a book, you see – ‘How to succeed in the hospitality business’, and I want you to be the Deri’s social media officer as well.”
"The poor girl has only just started" |
Cassie protests that the poor girl has only just started, but he points out that she is young and understands these things;
"I might make you a badge as well" |
“And if you bring in more customers, I might make you a badge as well.”
As the two customers leave, he calls to them, “Make sure you leave us a good review!
"It's fun, running this bar, isn't it?" |
“It’s fun, running this bar, isn’t it?”
Tesni is obviously not impressed |
Both Cassie and Tesni look disapproving.
"Wilko knows I nicked his badge" |
Kelly returns to Llwyncelyn, where Jason is sitting at the kitchen table; “Wilko knows I nicked his badge,” she groans,
"What exactly did he say?" |
and Jason asks exactly what he said. “He just said our jobs were similar, because we investigate stuff, and then he asked me if I’d ever thought of joining the force –
"I'd like the badge and the power" |
“because I’d like the badge and the power,” she answers.
"So he didn't accuse you, then?" |
“So he didn’t accuse you, then?” Jason emphasises, but she feels that the DI is playing some kind of game. He suggests that Wilko does not know anything about the ID badge, or he would have said. “If I had to guess, I’d say he was flirting with you –
"Probably wants to show you more than his badge!" |
“he probably wants to show you more than just his badge!”
"You're not jealous, are you?" |
“You’re not jealous, are you?” asks Kelly,
"Not even just a little?" |
“Not even just a little?”
"Perhaps a little bit" |
Jason confesses that perhaps he is slightly jealous, and suggests that as the house is empty,
He suggests they should go upstairs |
and they have at least an hour, she could accompany him upstairs.
Aaron has been packing a bag |
In the chip shop flat, Britt calls for Aaron, and he tells her to chill out; “Why are you packing?” she demands;
"I'm doing some Bacc volunteering stuff" |
he explains that he is meeting Jake tonight to do some Bacc volunteering stuff – a football tournament tonight and tomorrow to finish the Bacc.
"I'm staying at Jake's house tonight" |
“I’m staying at Jake’s house tonight and we’re ordering pizzas – how could you forget?” he wonders. His mother maintains that he has plans for sleepovers and pizza every week.
"Can I go or not, Mam?" |
He is becoming angry and snarls, “Can I go or not, Mam? If not, I’ll have to tell the coach, so he can find someone else!”
"Sorry, Aaron – I've got a lot on my mind" |
Britt replies that of course he can and apologises that she has a lot on her mind at the moment. He will not be leaving for another couple of hours,
Then he is instructed to clean his boots |
and is encouraged to clean his boots, because if he is volunteering, he needs to look tidy. She will be down in the shop if he needs anything.
Dani has another try at persuading Jaclyn |
Dani, complete with the baby, has gone to number 10, where she asks Jaclyn, “When did you get the e-mail?” She replies that it was an hour ago; his solicitor told him the news yesterday, and Dylan wants to see his sister, but she is absolutely determined that she is not going.
"He's bound to ask me to change my testimony again" |
“He’s bound to ask me to change my testimony again – I could never live with myself if I changed my statement, knowing that more people would suffer because of him!” Jaclyn insists.
"What about me and Gabriel?" |
“What about me and Gabriel?” Dani asks; Jaclyn considers it better if the child never met his father. “It’s nice to see that blood is thicker than water,” sneers Dani as she heads for the door.
Jaclyn points out, “Listen, I’d do anything for you and Gabriel, but I’m not going to help Dylan –
"I never want to see him again!" |
“I never want to see him again!” Now Dani does leave the house.
Jinx has done some online research |
At Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx has been doing some research; “There are a few franchises here worth considering,” he tells Sioned, “There’s one which teaches children to speak a foreign language.” She wonders if he can speak another language,
"Un petit peu . . ." |
but he can only manage a few words of French.
". . . but I am good with children" |
However, he considers himself good with children, and at that moment his particular charge arrives back from school.
"I'm starving!" |
“I’m starving!” she complains, and he points out there is plenty of pizza there. Sioned invites her to play a game with them – how to spend £50,000;
"If i was allowed to sell pizzas . . ." |
Arwen has the immediate answer, “Well, if I was allowed to sell pizzas, I’d make £50,000 before Christmas! No-one sells home-made pizzas round here –
"Because I'm only ten!" |
“but I’m not allowed because I’m only ten!”
"Jinx, that's genius!" |
“Jinx, that’s genius!” exclaims Sioned,
Jinx cannot but agree |
and he is likewise impressed.
"Well, can I sell pizzas, then?" |
Arwen demands if she is going to be allowed to sell pizzas. Jinx tells her she cannot do that at school, but if they were to create a proper company, it would be a different matter.
“We need some flyers first, to make sure there is enough demand,” he says,
"Everything is online these days, Jinx" |
but Sioned reminds him that everything is online these days.
"Insta would be best" |
Arwen reels off the names of several of the online platforms, “Snapchat, Insta, TikTok – but Insta would the best. My friend’s mother created an Insta account for the dog – and sold loads of dog coats across the EU.
"It was before Brexit, obviously" |
“It was before Brexit, obviously!”
She is making Jinx feel old, and Sioned concludes that they have a little expert here. He proposes making Arwen the company’s CEO; she asks once more, “So, can I sell pizza to years four and five tomorrow?” Jinx’s answer is that she cannot, but she can sell them on Instagram.
Mark is doing something constructive |
Mark is actually making himself useful, clearing one of the tables in the Deri; “Now I’m going to see how things are shaping up in the kitchen,” he tells Cassie,
"I deserve a drink, Tesni!" |
who says that she never drinks on the job, but feels as if she deserves one.
Tesni wonders what is wrong with Mark, and is told, “It’s men – the power goes to their heads.”
"I've seen a different side to them" |
Tesni remarks that she has seen a different side to Cwmderi’s respectable men.
“You’d be surprised who likes sexting late at night!” she goes on,
"Like Ieuan Griffiths and Hywel Llywelyn" |
and Cassie can imagine that she probably means Ieuan Griffiths and Hywel Llywelyn.
“Hywel and I go back many years – he was Cwmderi’s stud,
"I wouldn't give him more than five" |
“but I wouldn’t give him more than five,” she adds, disparagingly.
"So this is where you're hiding" |
Siôn comes in and remarks to Tesni, “Oh yeah – this is where you’re hiding, is it, on your day off?”
"I've been reading your novel" |
Tesni pretends that she has been reading his novel, maintaining that she cannot wait to read the next chapter, so she needs some peace for the rest of the day.
"See you tomorrow in Y Winllan" |
He agrees that he will see her tomorrow in Y Winllan and leaves again.
"He has no idea you work here, has he?" |
“He has no idea you work here, has he?” Cassie realises, and Tesni does not know how she is going to tell him.
Aaron is searching . . . |
Aaron is frantically searching for something in the chip shop flat; he is on the phone to his mate, “Why do people move stuff all the time?
. . . and finally locates it |
“Yes, I’ve found it – if I leave now, I can meet you and Alex on the platform at about six –
"Don't leave without me, Ant!" |
“and don’t leave without me, Ant!”
His mother comes upstairs, believing he had left some time ago;
"Someone hid my wallet!" |
“I would have, but someone hid my wallet!” he moans.
"I just put it somewhere safe" |
Britt maintains that she put it somewhere safe and did not think he would need a wallet at a football tournament. “I might want to buy a snack or a drink,” he growls.
Britt suspects that a girl is involved |
She appears to be reaching a conclusion with this talk of snacks and drinks, so encourages him that he ought to be going, and she will lie down for a few minutes before her next shift.
Aaron is taking the mask, for some reason |
Aaron takes the Hallowe’en mask from his bag and, after looking at it, puts it back.
