25 December 2021 (2nd) CHRISTMAS DAY

Dani was trying to catch up with some sleep

Dani becomes aware of someone calling her name, and wakes up with a start;  she cannot believe that Dylan is there.

"Ho, ho, ho!"

“Ho, ho, ho – sorry I’ve lost my hair and beard, my sleigh and scarf!” he jokes,

"What are you doing here, Dylan?"

but she wants to know what he is doing there.

“I’ve come to spend some time with you and Gabriel – everything’s all right now – where is he?

"I can't wait to see Gabriel"

“I can’t wait to see him!” Dylan goes on.

"He's not here"

Dani lies that he is not there;  “Iolo and Tyler took the children so I could have some peace – I can’t fetch Gabriel and not bring the others too – what are you doing here?”

He instructs her to go and fetch him;  “I haven’t come all this way not to see him!” and she repeats that she will have to bring back Gwern and Seren.

"You don't want me to see him!"

He realises that she does not want him to see the baby;  “It certainly looks like that!”

Dani is concerned that she is going to have the cops at the door, and he tries to explain that it is OK;

"Call it a special dispensation"

“Call it a special dispensation – they know I’m out.”   She points out that they do not know he is there, and he simply wants to make the best of the time that they have.

Then they hear Gabriel crying

Unfortunately, Gabriel chooses that moment to cry, and his voice is clearly heard via the baby monitor.

"Why did you lie?"

“Why did you lie?” he demands

"You just want to play happy families"

and she complains that he has landed here, straight from the jail, wanting to play happy families.

“You don’t want me to see him – you don’t understand – I’d never do anything to hurt you!” he insists,

"Don't try anything, Dani!"

and as she goes to fetch the baby, he warns her not to try anything.

A drone's-eye-view of the dinner table

We have an unusual view of the diners at the table in Y Plas,

"This is the best Christmas dinner ever . . ."

where Kelly tells Jason, “This is the best Christmas dinner ever –

". . . apart from Auntie Neet's, of course"

“oh, apart from Auntie Neet’s, obviously!”   Jason is bursting, but Kelly would not mind a coffee before going home.

“Home?   Doesn’t she know?” giggles Amanda,

"You're not serious, Jase?"

and Jason announces that they are staying the night at the hotel.   Kelly cannot believe that he is serious, and Anita protests that they do not have any spare clothes or toiletries.

"I've packed a bag for both of you"

Jason has thought of everything and has packed a bag for both of them.

“You’re amazing!” gasps Kelly,

"I know I'm amazing"

something which he already knows, but Anita begs to differ, incredulous that he has been through her underwear drawer.   Jason assures her that what he saw in there will remain their secret.

“Why don’t you go to the bar for a drink, while Ifan and I take the cases to our rooms?” he suggests, “Do you want to help Dadi?   Good boy!”

Amanda is going outside with Kelly

Amanda says that she fancies some fresh air and invites Kelly to join her;

"Anything to make the food settle"

she would welcome anything to help the food settle.

Anita is asked if she would mind if her sister spent some time alone with Kelly.

"I'll have a drink here, then"

“That’s fine – I’ll have a drink here,” she replies, and asks a passing waiter for an espresso martini.

"Merry Christmas, Anita"

She is just wishing herself a Merry Christmas when Ieuan Griffiths comes across,

"That hat suits you"

remarking that her party hat suits her.

“Has everyone else gone?” he enquires, and she answers that they are around somewhere.   “Do you mind if I sit down?” he goes on,

He does not wait for Anita's answer

and does so regardless of her reply.   “Christmas is for kids these days, isn’t it?

"It's easier than to make lunch for one"

“It’s easier to come here than make lunch for one.”

Anita asks where his daughters are, and he says that he does not want to be under their feet;  “How about you – where’s Darren?”

"He's in Canada"

She informs him that her son is in Canada, and asks her to go over there every year, but she prefers being at home;  today she is with her family.

"I heard about you and Siôn"

Then he continues, “I heard about you and Siôn,” but she is not particularly keen to talk about that.   “If I can say just one thing . . .” he begins, and Anita doubts that she will be able to stop him, “You’re far too good for Siôn White – he does nothing but throw some principles around – but nothing’s more important to him than lining his own pockets!”

"I'll go and find Kelly and Amanda"

Anita has had enough of this, saying that she will go and find Kelly and Amanda,

Her drink arrives . . .

but at that moment the espresso martini arrives, so she has no choice but to to stay at the table.

. . . and she has to stay at the table

“You can’t escape now – you’ve got that to drink!” Griffiths grins.

Ffion comes out of the house

Jinx’s patience is rewarded when the door of the house opens and Ffion comes out;

"Why have you dragged Arwen all the way here?"

when she notices the car she walks towards it and demands, “What came over you?   Dragging Arwen all the way here?”   He gets out of the car and asks in turn where Nesta is, to which she replies, “With the kids on their bikes.”

"Don't tell me you're sleeping with that dog?"

“Don’t tell me you’re sleeping with that dog!” Jinx snarls, and she remarks that she could say that, but wonders whether he would believe her.   “He’s your sister’s partner!” Jinx exclaims, but Ffion is quick to point out that Nesta is her ‘half-sister’, and she does not care anyway.

"I'm doing to Nesta what she did to me!"

“I’m enjoying doing to Nesta what she did to me!” she tells him, and Jinx suspects that is why she came to stay in the north.

"Have you thought of Arwen?"

“Have you thought of Arwen?” he asks, and Ffion insists that she missed her daughter more that he will ever understand.   She wants to get back before Val whispers any more poison in Arwen’s ear.

They get into the car

They get into the car.

"I'd do anything to keep you safe"

In the Deri flat, Danny has made mugs of tea while Dylan is cradling the baby;  “I’d do anything to keep you safe and make you happy,” he tells Gabriel.

"He has your eyes"

Dani says that he has Dylan’s eyes and she actually smiles.

"Jason's sly, but he's gorgeous!"

In the grounds of Y Plas, Kelly is so glad Jason arranged this;  “He’s sly, but he’s gorgeous!”   Her mother wanted the chance to ask her if she is OK with everything,

"I'm getting there"

and Kelly replies that she is, “Getting there.”

"I sometimes regret I didn't tell you sooner"

Amanda sometimes regrets that she did not tell her daughter sooner;  Kelly replies, “Do you know what, Mam?   Honestly, I don’t think I could have handled knowing about Mickey before now – not without Jason.”

"I'm sorry you suffered, Mam"

They walk across a bridge over the stream and Kelly continues, “Mam, I’m sorry you suffered while he lived his life without any consequences,” but Amanda reminds her that he did not get off, after what Kelly wrote about him – the law is not everything.

“Have you heard from him?   Do you want to hear from him?” Amanda asks, “You always wanted a father, Kel – since you were a little girl.”

"Well, I don't want him!"

Kelly is quite emphatic, “Well, I don’t want him!   And anyway, you’re more than enough for me, Mam.   I just want to move on and make up for the arguments.”

"I shall miss the arguments"

Her mother says she will miss the arguments, and is most proud of the fact that she raised a daughter with fire in her belly.

"You put it there – every spark!"

“Well, you put it there – every spark!” laughs Kelly.

Jinx stops in a wild, windswept place

In the windswept mountains of North Wales, Jinx brings the car to a stop and takes something from the boot.

"Why have you stopped here?"

Ffion wonders what he is doing;  “Why have you stopped here?”

He says there is something he needs to do, and he also needs her to be there;

"It's time to scatter Taid's ashes"

“Taid’s ashes – it’s time to scatter them.”   She protests that Taid died ages ago, wanting to know where the ashes have been since then.

"Not in the house?"

She is disgusted to hear that they have been in the house, under the bed.

"Next to his money, I expect"

“Next to Taid’s money, I expect – what else are you hiding under that bed?” she goes on, and he would like to talk about that another time.

"He used to come here every Christmas afternoon"

He remembers that Taid used to come to that very spot for a walk every Christmas afternoon – he loved the place.

“Why didn’t you phone me – rather than just turning up and kidnapping me?” she demands, and he stresses that she is just being dramatic.

"If I had known you were sleeping with Cai . . ."

Jinx snarls, “If I had known you were sleeping with Cai, I wouldn’t have bothered!   You stay in the car – I’m going.”

"Wait, Jinx!"

However, she chases after him.

"I don't want him to wake up"

Dylan has put the baby back in his cot and does not want him to wake up;

"What is this, Dylan?"

Dani asks, “What is this, Dylan?   You land here – it’s a bit late to re-enact the nativity, isn’t it?”

He is quite clear that he had to see them both, stressing that she and Gabriel mean everything to him;

"I've risked a lot to come here"

“The truth is I’ve risked a lot to come here, and I’m glad that I’ve met Gabriel and seen you again – I love you.”

Hello – what is coming next?

Their proximity seems to indicate that something is about to happen, but the scene changes to the house next door,

The DI is going to do some more pugilistics . . .

where the DI is donning his boxing gloves, preparing to have another go at the punchbag.

. . . therefore he does not witness . . .

It is a pity that he is not paying more attention to his CCTV monitor,

. . . what is happening next door

which is recording the happenings in the Deri flat.

They are now at the right place

Up in the mountains, Jinx declares that they are at the right place,

"You ought to say something first"

but Ffion remarks that he ought to say something before he scatters the ashes;  “A prayer, perhaps?”

"Taid was not really religious"

Apparently, Taid was not really religious,

"Everyone deserves a prayer – not just a fling!"

but she insists, “Everyone deserves a prayer – not just a fling!”

“It’s strange hearing you talk about prayer – you laughed at me when I said I wanted to go into the ministry,” he says, but she describes that as Chapel nonsense, so he invites her to say a word or two.

“You were with him at the end – did he say anything about how he wanted to go?” she asks,

"He talked about the things he wished he had done"

and Jinx replies that he mainly talked about the things he wished that he had done with his life.   “Sad, isn’t it?   Perhaps there’s no point saying anything,” Ffion concludes, “Words aren’t going to change anything.”

Ffion tests the direction of the wind . . .

She gauges the direction of the wind, Jinx says, “Tara, Taid,”

. . . which carries the ashes across the mountainside

and the ashes are blown by the wind across the mountainside, as a single bird is singing.

"I wouldn't mind going like that"

“I wouldn’t mind going like that – being blown by the wind,” muses Ffion, and is told to put it in her will.   “I’m telling you – you can remember,” she says, but he wonders what happens if he goes before her.

"I wouldn't like that"

She does not relish the prospect, and they look at each other,

They stand in the vastness of the mountains

standing in the wild open space.

They get dressed, after their little dalliance

In the Deri flat, Dylan and Dani are getting dressed, after whatever they have been doing, and he says that he has to go.

"Well, you got what you wanted!"

“Now you’ve got what you wanted!” she comments.   He predicts that if he keeps his head down, he will be back soon, and puts on his black hoodie.

Wilko is still in ignorance . . .

Meanwhile, Wilko is still pummelling his punchbag, then, in a state of exhaustion,

. . . but then happens to notice the laptop

goes into the kitchen for some water.   He catches sight of the hooded figure next door, who is just leaving the flat,

He quickly exits the house . . .

and dashes out of the house.   As he can see no-one in the street,

. . . and enters the Deri . . .

he goes into the Deri.

. . . where Dani is surprised to see him

He goes straight up to the flat, and Dani says she was not expecting to see him today;  she thinks it strange that he has been for a run on Christmas Day.   He explains that he was just checking that she is OK, asking if she is alone.

"Gabriel is here, but he's sleeping"

She replies that Gabriel is there, but is sleeping,

Dylan takes his opportunity to flee

and behind the DI we can see the grinning Dylan, who then heads off down the stairs.   Dani offers to make Wilko a cup of tea,

His eagle eye does not miss the two mugs

but then he sees two mugs on the table and quickly leaves the flat, wishing her Merry Christmas.

Dani is now rather concerned

She hopes that he is not suspicious.

Looking along the street, he can see no sign of anyone,

The suspect enters the alley . . .

until he glimpses someone turning into the alley, and follows them at speed.

. . . and then disappears

At the far end, he can see no movement,

The DI walks along by the parked cars

but cautiously makes his way along the line of parked cars.

Dylan hopes he will not be found

We can see that Dylan is sitting on the ground behind a red Audi, hoping that he will not be spotted.

Looking under the cars, he sees a clue . . .

The DI lies on the ground to look under the cars, and can see a black shape, so he stealthily approaches,

. . . but it is only a discarded hoodie . . .

only to find that Dylan has discarded his hoodie and made his escape.

. . . and Dylan is out of sight

He is just round the corner, smiling with satisfaction, then runs off.

Aww is complaining about her grandmother

When Ffion gets back to her mother’s house, Arwen comes hurrying out, demanding, “Where have you been?   I’m trying to complete my game – and Nain’s talking all the time!”

"Her head's been in that thing all the time"

Val complains that her head has been in that thing all the time.

"There's something I forgot to do"

Then Jinx announces that he is going somewhere by himself;  “Something I forgot to do – I won’t be long.”

This meets with Ffion's displeasure

Ffion and Arwen do not look at all happy about this.

"I'm here now – so don't worry"

In the woodland, Royce looks anxiously at his watch and is becoming impatient;  then Dylan finally arrives.   “I’m here now, so don’t worry,” Dylan reassures him, but he is very worried that he could lose his job.

"You could lose a lot more than your job!"

“You could lose a lot more than your job,” Dylan warns him, as he shows a photograph of the chaplain and his family.   “In case you’re tempted to open your mouth, I always know where they are!” he points out,

"You want me to do something else?"

“I’ve got one more job for you – but take me back first.”

"I don't think you want Nesta to hear this!"

Jinx pulls up again outside Cai’s house, and when the door is opened demands, “Is Nesta in?   Come on – I don’t think you want to hear what I have to say.

"Keep your mitts off Ffion – understand?"

“Keep your mitts off Ffion – do you understand?   She’s fragile and she doesn’t need anyone like you!”

"She's one of the toughest women I know"

Cai describes her as one of the toughest women he knows;

"Which shows you don't know her at all!"

“Which shows that you don’t know her at all,” Jinx snarls.

“Hang on – what is it to you if Ffion and I have a bit of fun?”   Jinx is furious that he describes it like that, and suggests that he ends it all now.

"Are you threatening me?"

When Cai enquires if he is being threatened,

"Yes – I think I probably am!"

Jinx comes to the conclusion that, yes, he probably is.   “You still fancy her, don’t you?   That’s what this is – after all the years – the affair she had with Gethin,

"Think you've got a chance – with your cousin?"

you think you’ve got a chance with her – with your cousin!” sneers Cai.

Jinx resists the urge to 'punch his lights out'

After a moment’s thought, Jinx decides it is better not to hit him, but rather walks away and gets into the car.

"I see Kelly as more of a daughter"

As they sit at the table in Y Plas, Anita tells Griffiths that she sees Kelly as more of a daughter;  “She always comes to me when she argues with her mother.”

"They seemed best friends today"

He points out that they seemed best friends today, and never realised how lucky he was all those years ago;  “When the girls were young.”

Griffiths regrets losing Hazel

Anita accuses him of living in the past, and he goes on, “The worst thing that happened to me was losing Hazel.”

"She didn't die – she left you!"

Anita points out that Hazel did not die, but she left him;  “Meic died!” she emphasises,

"It's much the same"

but he regards them both as the same thing – he is still alone at the table.   “Whose fault is that?” she demands,

"You have to go and look for happiness"

“You have to go and look for happiness, not expect someone else to do it for you.”

"People don't seem to have a lot of patience with me"

He confesses that people do not seem to have a lot of patience with him, and she tells him exactly why that is;  “You need to think before opening your mouth – then you might have a few more friends – and, you never know, perhaps more than friends.”

He moans that the first thing women see is the shine on his forehead;

"A lot of women think bald heads are sexy"

she maintains that a lot of women think bald heads are sexy.   “But I don’t think appearance is half as important as the ability to listen,” she adds.

He looks round and cannot see any other members of her family,

"Let me buy you another one of those"

so he suggests, “Let me buy you another one of those,” and she suspects that he is trying to get her drunk.   He maintains that he is just enjoying her company,

"It's time I went to look for the others"

but she says that it is time she went to look for the others,

"Good night!"

and they both bid each other good night.

As Anita totters drunkenly along . . .

As she walks rather unsteadily,

. . . she sees Kelly and Amanda laughing

she comes across Kelly and her mother talking and laughing.

Megan has another visitor

Megan has a knock on the door, and is rather reluctant to open it;  the visitor introduces himself as Dylan’s chaplain, so she lets him in.

"Yes, Dylan is back where he should be"

He advises that Dylan is now back where he should be, which comes as a relief to Megan.   “He wanted to make sure that you are all right,” says Royce, “He thinks a lot of of you, you know – he says you are the only one who understands him.”

"Did he mention Gareth Wyn?"

As he is about to leave, Megan asks if Gareth Wyn has been mentioned,

"No, I don't think so"

but the chaplain does not recognise the name, and lets himself out of the house.

Megan looks at the photo of her son

She looks down at the picture of Gareth Wyn from many years ago.

Anita nears her hotel room

Anita is approaching her room at the hotel when she discovers that Griffiths is also staying there for the night;

"Rather early to go to bed"

he thinks that it is rather early to go to bed, but she says that she is just having a break.
“From me, you mean,” he imagines,

"We have been chatting for ages"

and she says that they have been chatting for ages.   He still insists that it is too early to go to bed on Christmas night.   “We could keep each other company – my room is just down there,

"I've got a bottle of single malt"

“and I’ve got a bottle of single malt in my case,” he tells her.

She replies that she hates the stuff, so he decides he might as well go to bed as well.

"I don't think I'll be able to drink it all by myself"

Anita calls him back;  “Do you know what I’m going to do?   I’m going to order a bottle of wine from the bar – I don't think I’ll be able to drink it all by myself.”

"You want to share it with me . . ."

He seems surprised that she wants to share it –

". . . in there?"

with him – in there.   “Shut up and just come in, will you?” she snaps,

He appears quite enthusiastic

and he looks quite pleased to comply with her instructions.

Dylan lies on his bunk . . .

Back in the prison cell, Dylan is lying on his bunk,

. . . looking at Dylan and Gabriel

looking at photographs of Dani and Gabriel.

"I think she will keep quiet"

The chaplain comes in and informs him that he thinks Megan will keep quiet.   “Great – thanks, boy,” Dylan says, “I’m looking forward to my next day release already,” but as the chaplain is leaving,

"One more thing – Merry Christmas!"

he adds, “One more thing – Merry Christmas!”
