10 November 2020

Jason has received his divorce documents

At APD, Jason looks at an envelope which has been delivered and wears a concerned expression;

He is about to open the envelope

he finally decides he ought to open it, and as he is doing so, Sara walks in.

"Well be divorced now before we know it"

“Good, you’re here,” she says, “Mine came this morning, too.   We’ll be divorced now before we know it.”

Jason hopes so, as she continues, “The timing’s perfect, isn’t it, with APD being sold?   You’ll have plenty of money in the bank to buy me out.”

"What do you want – except my money?"

“What do you want, Sara?” he demands, “Except my money, of course.”

She regards it as, “Our money,” and tells him that she is here to talk about Ifan.

"Making this as smooth as possible for Ifan"

“Now that the divorce is almost official, we need to find a way of making this work as smoothly as possible for him.   Are you going to make me a cup of tea, or what?”

Jason is not going to argue with her

Jason thinks he had better do as he is told.

A reminder of happier times

At Penrhewl, Eileen is dusting a photo of her and Jim when DJ asks if she has heard from Sioned yet;  “Yes, Nel’s with the vet now,” is the reply.

The sheepdog has suddenly been struck down

DJ cannot understand it, as the dog was out rounding up the sheep with him yesterday.   He is about to make himself a sandwich for lunch when the phone rings;

DJ receives a report of straying cattle

it is a neighbouring farmer who reports that some of Penrhewl’s cattle are loose.

"The gate of Dol Derwen was open"

DJ will be there to sort things out, and informs Eileen that they have got out of Dol Derwen field through an open gate.

"I know I shut that gate"

He was the last one there and knows that he shut the gate.

Mathew tucks in his shirt after their . . .

In the shop flat, Mathew and Izzy are getting dressed;  he describes her as a bad influence, but she insists that everyone deserves a lunch break.

"You're supposed to eat during your lunch break"

“You’re supposed to eat during your lunch break,” he tells her, and she says that they can eat tonight.

"How about a curry tonight?"

She asks if he fancies a curry, and when he volunteers to pick one up after work she suggests that they could make one.

"You tick every box, don't you?"

“A cook, too?” he laughs, “You tick every box, don’t you?”

Just as well he did not arrive a few minutes earlier

Suddenly they have a visitor, Izzy’s father;  “You’re both here – good,” he says,

"Don't try and deny it"

“Lovebirds!   Don’t try and deny it, because I know everything – put the kettle on, Iz.”

They look rather awkward
Both Izzy and Mathew look rather uncomfortable.

"Come for a run with me, Kelly"

In the café, Ffion is trying to persuade Kelly to come for a run with her.   Kelly is less than enthusiastic;

Kelly does not want to sweat

“I’d rather do something where I don’t have to sweat, like, I don’t know, a yoga class.”

Ffion protests that then they would not know who had won, and Kelly mutters, “Classic PE teacher!”

"Thanks . . . but no thanks"

and as Ffion goes out of the door, she adds, “Thanks . . . but no thanks!”

"A big slice of chocolate cake"

Then Tesni comes in, and orders, “A big slice of chocolate cake – the biggest one you’ve got – I’ve got a broken heart.”

"You can have a chocolate eclair as well"

In that case Kelly will give her a chocolate eclair as well.

"Dylan's been a good influence on Ifan"

At APD, Sara goes on, “We’ve been doing all right, but there’s always room for improvement.   I think you’d agree that Dylan’s been a good influence on Ifan,”

"And, of course, Kelly"

then, prompted by Jason, she adds, “And of course Kelly.   I think the key to moving on is to work on these dynamics.”

Jason is being blinded by science here

Jason is looking rather perturbed as she drones on, “We’re a modern family now, aren’t we?   Ifan is the most important thing to us all –

"We're a 'blended family'!"

“we’re a ‘blended family’, not a ‘broken family’, as they say.”

"Who says these things, Sara?"

“‘Blended family’?   Sorry, Sara, but who says these things?” he demands,  “Do I know them?”

She just continues that she wants to show people they are still friends and that they understand each other;

"I'm going to ask Kelly to be my bridesmaid"

“That’s why I’m going to ask Kelly to be my bridesmaid.”   Jason cannot believe his ears, and insists that she cannot be serious.   However she assures him that she is determined to do so.

"Don't tell me – I'm the best man, am I?"

“OK, don’t tell me – I’m the best man, am I?” he exclaims.

"Long before you and Kelly started "fooling around'!"

She scathingly points out to him that she and Kelly were friends long before Jason started ‘fooling around’ with her.

"We were a 'blended family' a minute ago!"

“Fooling around?” he growls angrily, “We were a ‘blended family’ a minute ago!”   She alleges that she is simply trying to be nice, and he makes it quite clear, “Kelly will think it’s odd – just like I do!”

Sara obstinately snarls, “We’ll see about that, then, shall we?   You know what, Jason?   I should have known you weren’t mature enough to deal with this!” and she furiously marches out.

"Grrr – blended family!"

Jason is furious, growling, “Blended Family!”

"It's not ramblers this time"

When they return to the farmhouse, DJ is blaming the ramblers and thinks they should put up a sign;  Eileen however is quite sure, “It’s not ramblers this time – it’s a bit of a coincidence, isn’t it?   Eifion turning up, and we get all these problems.

"This place has been running like clockwork for months"

“This place has been running like clockwork for months – it’s just the type of thing he would do.”

"He won't get away with this!"

DJ reminds her that they have no proof, but she does not consider that she needs it;  “I know how his mind works, and he won’t get away with this!”   She strides resolutely from the farm.

"Two ham and cheese, one prawn"
Kelly is taking a phone order, “Two ham and cheese, one prawn, all on brown bread,” when Jason comes in.

"Has Sara been in to have a chat?"

“Has Sara been in here to have a chat with you yet?” he asks, “Well, she came to have a chat with me about us, as a family.   Let me get this right – how did she put it?

"Not a 'broken family' but a 'blended family'!"

“Not a ‘broken family’, but a ‘blended family’!   And that she’s going to ask you to be her bridesmaid.   You’re best friends, aren’t you?”

"That's a bit weird!"

“We’re friends, yeah, but asking your ex-husband’s girlfriend to be a bridesmaid is a bit weird!” is Kelly’s considered opinion.   He says that is exactly what he told Sara,

"And I'm too immature to understand"

but he was judged to be too immature to understand, apparently.

"Well, so am I, then – the answer's no!"

“Well, so am I, then, because the answer is no!” Kelly assures him.   He demands if this is how things are going to be from now on, with Sara always around.   “It depends,” Kelly advises him, “If you’re always going to give her attention – because that’s what she wants – attention!”

"A lot of people would disagree with that sweeping statement"

He is grateful that Kelly is so sensible, although she says that a lot of people would disagree with that sweeping statement.   “They must be the people who have been talking to Sara,” he assumes.

"No rest for the wicked"

The café phone rings, and, Kelly, grumbling, “No rest for the wicked,” answers it.

"I can't believe Eifion put you in that position, Dad"

Having heard the story, Izzy cannot believe that Eifion put her father in a situation like that, but he answers that it does not matter now.

"I'm pleased for both of you"

“I’m pleased for both of you – you seem very happy, fair play.”   Mathew admits that he does not know where he would be without Izzy, and Colin agrees, “She’s a girl and a half – the way she looked after you after the accident is proof of that.”

"I'll always look after her"

Mathew promises her that from now on he will always look after her, and Colin warns that he better had,

"Another rather delicate, thing . . ."

then adds that there is another thing, that is rather delicate.

". . . I think you should let your mother know"

“Your mother – I think you should let her know before someone else does.”   Mathew proposes that they should go and see Gaynor later,

"And there's someone else who ought to know"

but Izzy reminds him there is someone else who ought to know.

Eileen encounters Eifion

Eileen happens to be passing when Eifion comes out of the café;

"Your pathetic little plan didn't work"

“Well, your pathetic little plan didn’t work, did it?” she comments, “The cows are all safely back in the field.”

"DJ can't even close a gate, then"

He replies, flippantly, “Oh, DJ can’t even close a gate now, can he?”   He is assured that DJ is more of a farmer that Eifion is;  “Oh, that's why the cows were on the road, is it?” he taunts her.

“Nothing like that happened until you came back!” she rages,

"Are you accusing me, Eileen?"

and Eifion resents being accused of putting Penrhewl’s cows in danger.

Tesni has also just emerged from the café, and Eifion calls upon her to be a witness for when he takes Eileen to court for slander.

"Don't you dare come back to Penrhewl again!"

Eileen shouts at him, “With your record?   Any judge would side with me – don’t you dare come back to Penrhewl again – do you hear me?”   As she hurries away,

Then Eifion hatches his next piece of mischief

Eifion notices Izzy and Matthew coming out of the shop flat at the other end of the alley, which gives him an idea.

"I'm not sure how to tell you this"
Tesni is about to go into number ten, and he calls to her;  she says she saw him and Eileen arguing, and he replies that it was about not closing a gate or something.   “I’m not sure how to tell you this,” he says, “I don’t want to hurt you, but I think it’s important that you know – Mathew, he’s been cheating on you for weeks.”

"What are you talking about?"

Tesni wonders what he is talking about,

"With Izzy"

so he elaborates, “With Izzy,”

Tesni retreats into the house

and she immediately goes into the house;  he smiles triumphantly.

"You two – since when?"
Gaynor is surprised;  “You two – since when?”   Mathew answers that it has not been very long,

"We know we want things to work"
and Izzy adds that it is long enough to know that they want things to work.   Eifion was not happy about it, but they are not going to let him spoil things.

A phone message means Mathew has to leave

Mathew’s phone sounds as Gaynor informs her daughter, “You never used to smile like that when you were with Eifion.”   When he sees who is phoning him, he says that he must leave;  “Oh, I was about to get Izzy’s embarrassing baby photos out,” Gaynor remarks.

"Good luck"

As he goes, Izzy wishes him good luck.

"You can be honest now, Mam"

Izzy tells her mother she can be honest now, and she is told that Matthew is lovely;  Izzy knows that there is a ‘but’.   “You and Eifion have only just finished – are you ready for another relationship – especially with Mathew?   They’re related for one thing –

"Do you really need the baggage?"

“and he’s been through a lot – do you really need the baggage?”

"No-one's ever good enough, Mam!"

Izzy takes exception to this term;  “You’ve always got something to say – no-one’s ever good enough!” she moans,

"Your taste in men has always been questionable"
but her mother maintains that her taste in men has always been questionable.

"Why can't you be happy for me, like Dad?"

“Says you!   Why can’t you be happy for me, like Dad?” Izzy demands.

This starts Gaynor off again;  “Your father knows?”   Izzy confirms that he does, and unlike her, he was supportive.

"I'm just worried about you"

Gaynor insists, “I am just worried about you,”

"I'm not a little girl any more, Mam"

but her daughter points out that she is not a little girl any more and knows what she is doing.   She walks out of the house.

DJ has been registering calves online

DJ has just finished registering the calves online when Eileen comes in, looking angry, and he enquires what is wrong.   “I saw Eifion – he always knows how to wind me up.   I can’t help it – I know it was him who left that gate open.”

"But nothing happened, did it?"

DJ reminds her that nothing happened, and she goes on, “Not this time – but what about next time?

"I'm frightened, DJ"

“I’m frightened, DJ.   Eifion always gets what he wants, and he doesn’t care how, or what he has to do.”

"OK, what have I done this time?"

Now Colin has been summoned to visit Gaynor;  “OK, so what have I done this time?” he wants to know, “You sounded very serious on the phone.”   She asks if he has any news for her, and he cannot think of anything,.

"Nothing to do with Izzy and Mathew?"

“Nothing to do with Izzy and Mathew?” she continues, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

"I've only just found out myself"

Colin says he has only just found out himself, and in any case it was not his place to say.   “It would be nice not to be the last to know sometimes,” she complains, and he wonders what she is bothered about, as Mathew is a nice bloke.

"Do you think he's good enough for her?"

“Do you think he’s good enough for her?” Gaynor demands, critically, “It would be nice if she found someone with a bit of education – OK, someone better!”

"I'm not surprised you're the last to know"

He is not surprised that she is the last to know, but she argues that she just wants the best for her daughter.

“So do I, but unlike you, I don’t care whether he’s educated or not, as long as Izzy’s happy,” Colin explains, “After everything you and Hywel have been through, I thought you, of all people, would understand that.   Now, where’s that cup of tea?   I’m freezing.”

"You know where the kettle is, Colin"

She irritably tells him that he knows where the kettle is.

Kelly is doing some cleaning

Kelly is cleaning the hob in the café flat when Sara comes upstairs;

"Do you fancy a drink tonight?"

“Do you fancy a drink tonight?” she asks, but Kelly gives the excuse that she is shattered, having been doing a two man job all day.

Kelly just wants to watch telly

The only thing she wants is to watch trash on the telly tonight.

“OK, I’ll get us a bottle of wine, then,” Sara decides, “And I’ll leave you to clear up – I’m a bit busy myself.   I’ve got a manicure in half an hour –

"Would you mind getting wine from the shop?"

“would you mind getting the wine from the shop?   I’m not sure I’ll be back in time.”

"What did your last slave die of?"

Kelly is becoming increasingly angry as Sara rushes off downstairs.

"Have you spoken to Tesni?"

When Izzy returns to the shop flat, Mathew asks how prawn tikka sounds, and she is impressed.   She asks if he had spoken to Tesni;  he tried to phone her but there was no answer,

"I'll try again tomorrow"

but he will try again tomorrow.

At that moment Tesni walks in;

"Don't play games – Eifion told me everything"

“Is it true?” she demands, “Don’t play games – Eifion told me everything – you and her!”   There is an uncomfortable silence for a few seconds before Mathew confirms that it is true,

"It was after we finished"

but he insists that it was after the two of them had finished.

"Choosing her over me?"

“I’m not stupid – seriously, you’re choosing her over me?” she roars, and Izzy thinks that she ought to leave, but is told, “Shut up – this is between Math and me!”

"Look, I'm sorry, Tesni"

He forcibly points out that he is sorry,

"You didn't have enough backbone to tell me yourself!"

but she whines, “You didn’t have enough backbone to tell me yourself!”

"I did try – several times"

He argues that he tried to tell her several times;

She slams down his ring and goes

she takes off her ring and slams it down on the counter, then hurries away.

Izzy urges Mathew to leave her alone, as she needs time,

"I was trying not to upset her"

and he explains that he was trying not to upset her.

Tesni leaves the shop in tears

As Tesni comes out of the shop door, she is seen by Eifion;

"He didn't even try to deny it"

“He didn’t even try to deny it,” she wails.

"Don't worry – we'll make them pay!"

“Those two don’t care who gets hurt – but don’t worry, we’ll make them pay!” he threatens.   Tesni makes it clear that she is not interested in revenge;  he goes on, “Do you want them to make a fool of you?”

"Don't you think you've done enough for one day?"

She yells at him to leave her alone;  “Don’t you think you’ve done enough for one day?”

Sara lounges in the café flat

Sara is relaxing in the café flat and lounges, in her dressing gown, on the sofa;  when Kelly comes in, she asks, “Did you get the wine?”

"Can you go and get one from Tapas?"

When told that she did not, Sara moans that the shop will be closed now;  “Can you go and get one from Tapas, then?   I can’t go like this, can I?”

"I don't want wine"

Kelly has had enough of this, and protests that she does not want wine;

"When you hear what I have to ask you"

“Well, you might want to celebrate,” begins Sara, “When you hear what I have to ask you.”

"I don't want to be your bridesmaid"

Kelly pre-empts her, “Before you ask, I don’t want to be your bridesmaid,”

"I can't believe he told you!"

which brings a very sour look to Sara’s face;  she cannot believe that Jason has told Kelly.

Kelly composes herself

After a moment to compose herself, Kelly adds, “I’m more than happy to help you with a wedding arrangements, like,

"It's a step too far – it's just weird!"

“but I think asking me to be a bridesmaid is a step too far.   It’s just . . . weird!”

"Long before you and Jason 'shacked up'!"

Sara is adamant that they are friends;  “We were friends long before you and Jason ‘shacked up’.”

"Shacked up?"

Kelly finds this term objectionable, whereas Sara insists, “What I think is weird is that you’re putting him in front of me!

"Gambling addict, can't be trusted with a £10 note!"

“Jason – gambling addict in his 40s who can’t be trusted with a £10 note!   You’re happy with a bloke like that, are you?   You’re happy to turn your back to be with someone like him?”

"He's the father of your child, Sara"

Kelly emphasises that he is the father of Sara’s child,

"He wanted me to get rid of Ifan"

and Sara snarls, “Yes he is, and if I listened to Jason, we wouldn’t have a child – he wanted me to get rid of Ifan, when he heard he had Down’s!   Did you know that?”

"I shouldn't have to choose, Sara . . ."

Kelly is not listening to any more this, and screams, “I shouldn’t have to choose, Sara!

". . . but if I had to, you just made it an easy decision!"

“But if I had to, you’ve just made it an easy decision!”

"At least I know where I stand now"

Sara comments that at least she knows where she stands now.

"I don't think you have many options!"

“Yeah – find another bridesmaid – but based on the fact that you’ve asked your ex-husband’s girlfriend, I don’t think you have many options!”

"I don't need you – I've got plenty of friends!"

In desperation, Sara whines, “I don’t need you, Kelly – I’ve got plenty of friends who would love to be my bridesmaid!”
