Eifion puts his plan into action

Eifion visits Maes-y-Deri, and Kath assumes that he wants to speak to Mark;  “No, it’s you I want to see – are you busy?” Eifion replies, and she maintains that she is always busy.   “Any chance of a cup of tea?” he enquires,

"Right, why are you here, Eifion?"

but first she wants to know why he is there.

"I'd like to make you a rich woman"

“I’d like to make you a rich woman,” he says, and she is immediately suspicious, “I want to buy Jim’s fields.”

"I'll put the kettle on, then"

In that case, she agrees to put on the kettle, and Eifion grins.

Gerwyn is spending his life moping on the sofa

Gerwyn is lounging on the sofa when Guto comes home;

"I won't let you do the same, Dad"

“Dad, you promised – perhaps Mam is running away instead of facing up to her problems, but I won’t you let you do the same.”   His father grumbles that at least she can walk down the road in Pembrokeshire without people pointing at her.

Guto answers that they are not doing that,

"Aw – poor Gerwyn"

but Gerwyn comments, “Perhaps not, but I’m getting a lot of this, ‘Aw, shame!   Are you OK, love?’”

"Why don't you go back to work?"

Guto asks why he does not go back to work, and is told in no uncertain terms, “Why should I slave my guts out in the garage for Garry Monk?   This is all his fault!”

"You haven't done anything wrong, Dad"

His son insists that is no reason for him not to leave the house – he has not done anything wrong;  “It just means you’ve got friends who are worried about you, and that's no bad thing – Mark came over earlier, checking up on you, and you’re not answering your phone.”

"I don't know what to tell people"

Gerwyn simply does not know what to tell people, and Guto tells him he does not have to say anything;  “I’ll be with you.

"I'm not letting you rot in here all day"

“Right, I’m not letting you rot in here all day, so go upstairs and get dressed and save us all some time!   Come on!”   His father finally rouses himself and follows instructions.

Kelly is working on the café accounts

Up in the café flat, Kelly is busy with figurework when Luned comes upstairs to tell her something;  “It’s welcome distraction from this paperwork,” Kelly remarks, “What’s up?”

"No meat sausages have been delivered"

Luned reports that there has been a mistake with the delivery, as four boxes of the vegan sausages have arrived, but no meat ones.

"This new company's ridiculous!"

Kelly is not happy;  “Do you know what?   This new company’s ridiculous – that’s the third mistake this month!   I’ll phone them later, but for now everybody has to have vegan sausages.”

"At least it will be better for the environment"

Luned says that it will be better for the environment, then asks, “Is it still OK for me to go for a jog at lunchtime?

"But you've got bigger things on your mind"

“Sorry, here I am, going on about sausages and jogging and you’ve got bigger things on your mind.”

Kelly groans that mundane things keep people going;

Kelly hopes the problem has ended

“Anyway I haven’t had a letter for ages, so I hope the person sending them has become bored.

"If I find out who it was, I'll punch them for you!"

Luned is pleased to hear it, threatening that if she ever finds out who did it, she will punch them for Kelly.

"See, Dad, there's no-one here"

As they come out of the back gate, Guto says, “See, nobody here – you can do this, Dad,”

But Guto spoke too soon

but Anita comes round the corner and commiserates with Gerwyn.

"There's no-one around to cook for you"

“How are you, love?” she asks, “I was going to bring you over a casserole  – I don’t like to think there’s no-one around to cook for you.”   Guto points out that he is not bad at cooking, and Anita is glad that they will not starve.

“I heard that Jaclyn’s gone away,” she goes on, “Is she coming back?”   Gerwyn confirms that she will be back next week, and Anita growls,

"I always said he was a brute!"

“Garry Monk, of all people!   I always said he was a brute!   Are you still working for him?”

"The landlord making sure she's getting her money!"

“Oh, I see what this is,” replies Gerwyn, “The landlord making sure she’s getting her money!   Don’t you worry, Anita, you’ll get your rent on time.”

"If there's anything I can do to help . . ."

Anita alleges that it was last thing on her mind, and assures them that if there is anything she can do to help, they know where she is.

"See what I mean, Guto?"

As she walks away through the alley, Gerwyn looks at Guto and sighs.

"The land's worth £8,000"

“The land’s worth £8,000,” Eifion points out, a fact about which Kath was already aware, but she says that is only on paper.

"It means much more in my heart"

She maintains that it means so much more in her heart, if he knows what she means.   “I understand that – Jim was a close friend to me as well,” he alleges.

"But he wanted me to have the land"

She continues, “But he wanted me to have the land, didn’t he?”

"He wanted you to have something you could sell"

Eifion takes issue with that, suggesting that Jim wanted her to have something she could sell, so that she could have a better life.

"And you think £8,000 is going to do that?"

“And you think £8,000 is going to do that?” she demands, incredulously.

Mark walks in on this financial discussion

As Eifion tells her that he can go up to ten and not a penny more, the back door opens and Mark comes in.

Eifion says, “Just the man – perhaps you can knock some sense into your mother.”   Kath protests that she does not need a man to help her – she just does not want to sell.

Eifion is becoming rather heated

“What?   You’re turning your back on £10,000?” exclaims Eifion, and Mark wonders what is going on.

Again Kath emphasises that she is refusing the offer, and Eifion explains, “Your mother’s lost the plot!   Why do you want two fields?”

"Perhaps I want to start farming myself"

“Well, perhaps I want to start farming myself,” he is told, “I don’t want to sell, Eifion!”

“I knew you’d be too stupid to recognise a good offer!” he shouts,

"I think it's about time you left!"

and Mark thinks that he had better leave the house.   “Don’t worry – I’m going!

"You're off your head, do you know that?"

“You’re off your head, do you know that?” and with that he storms out.

Kath, however, is smiling

Kath is smiling

"What on earth are you doing, Mam?"

as Mark demands, “What on earth are you doing, Mam?   You don’t want those two fields.”

"I'll squeeze every penny I can out of him!"

She replies that it is obvious Eifion is desperate for them, so she intends to squeeze every penny she can out of that shameless idiot.

"Are you going to work today, or what?"

Guto and his father have reached the café;  “Are you going to work today, or what?” he asks, and Gerwyn says he might go tomorrow.   “I was thinking of having a curry tonight – what do you think?   Couple of drinks, watch a film.”

Curry sounds like a good idea

His father says that sounds good, and Guto has to leave to go to work.

"I heard about Jaclyn and Garry"

Eifion has just come in, and also commiserates with Gerwyn;  “I heard about Jaclyn and Garry.”   Gerwyn thinks that everybody has by now;

"Garry Monk, of all people!"

“Garry Monk, of all people!   I wouldn’t like to be you,” Eifion goes on.

Gerwyn heads homewards

As he then orders, sausage, beans and chips to go, Gerwyn leaves to return home.

"We only have vegetarian sausages"

Luned explains that they only have vegetarian sausages, and asks if that will be all right.   Eifion is engrossed in his phone, and absentmindedly agrees that it will be fine;

All his attention is on his phone

something on the phone seems to be concerning him.

Gerwyn surveys the untidy house . . .

When Gerwyn arrives home, he sets about tidying up the place,

. . . with washing waiting to be done

and then sees that there is a basket of dirty washing.   He opens the washing machine,

Then he catches sight . . .

notices Jaclyn’s apron hanging nearby;

. . . of Jaclyn's apron . . .

the emotion becomes too much for him

. . . which proves too much for him

and he dissolves into tears.

That message must be very interesting

Eifion is still looking at his phone when Luned comes out of the kitchen with his order;  he grumbles that it has taken a long time, opens the box, and angrily asks, “What’s this?”

"Vegan sausages, like I told you"

She answers that they are vegan sausages, and he denies she said anything about it.

"What are you – stupid?"

“You didn’t make it clear – what are you – stupid?” he rages at her, “I wouldn’t order such a thing, so give me my money back!”

"Hang on, Eifion – less of that!"

Hearing his raised voice, Kelly comes downstairs, demanding to know what is going on,

"Your staff can't get an order right!"

and is angrily told that her staff cannot get an order right.   She is not standing for this and advises him to calm down;

"You're upsetting my staff – get out!"

“You can’t raise your voice to a member of my staff – out!   You’re upsetting my staff and I want you out.   Go on – out, Eifion!”

"Watch it – or I'll ban you!"

As he comes out of the café door, he tries to remind her that the customer is always right, but she informs him, “Watch it – or I’ll ban you!”   He argues that she cannot do that, but she is adamant that she can, and will,

"You haven't heard the last of this!"

Mark is coming along the road and witnesses this difference of opinion, as Eifion rants that she has not heard the last of this.

"Not still angry about those fields, are you?"

“You’re not still angry about those fields, are you?” Mark laughs,

"Knock a bit of sense into your mother, will you?"

and again Eifion wants him to knock a bit of sense into his mother.   “She seems pretty determined not to sell,” Mark reminds him, and Eifion stalks off along the road.

"I think we can get as much as we want, Mam"

Mark immediately phones his mother;  “You’re right, Mam, I think we can get as much as we want!”

"I've never had a man shout at me like that"

Up in the café flat, a rather upset Luned tells Kelly, “I’ve never had a man shout at me like that before – he’s about the same age as my father!”

Kelly is very apologetic . . .

Kelly agrees that he should not have talked to her like that, and that she is extremely sorry Luned was put in that situation.

. . . but is assured it was not her fault

“It’s not your fault,” Luned protests, but Kelly asks if she wants the rest of the afternoon off.

“No, I’m all right,” is the reply,

"How about a drink tonight – on me?"

so Kelly suggests a drink tonight, which Luned considers a good idea.

Anita has very quickly rustled up a cake

Anita comes upstairs, bringing something to cheer up Luned – a cake which she has made;

"I would have given him a mouthful!"

“Do you know what?   If I had been there, I would have given him a mouthful!” she snarls, and Kelly asks her to look after the café for a little while.

Anita says that it is not busy down there,

"Please, Auntie Neet – we won't be long"

but Kelly seems keen to get rid of her, assuring Anita that they will not be long.

Gerwyn almost phones Jaclyn

At number 10, Gerwyn is sitting in the semi-darkness and picks up his phone, but when he hears the door opening, he quickly puts it down again.   He tells Guto, “Right, don’t start – I tried my best!”

Guto has come good news . . .

Guto replies that he will just have to try again tomorrow, and he has some good news for his father;

. . . they are going metal detecting at Penrhewl

“I’ve been to see Eileen, and she’s given us permission to take the metal detector up to Penrhewl fields tomorrow.”

Gerwyn does not regard this as particularly good news;

"What next – a shopping trip to Apêl Maenan?"

“What next – a shopping trip in Apêl Maenan?”   Guto replies that is what his father wants, that is what they will do, and they both smile.

"You're worth your weight in gold, Guto"

“You’re worth your weight in gold,” Gerwyn tells his son.

"I just can't picture it – Jaclyn and Garry!"

By the bar in the almost deserted Deri, Kelly comments, “I just can’t picture it – Jaclyn and Garry!”

"Gerwyn is sweet"

Luned feels sorry for Gerwyn, describing him as sweet, but Kelly suggests, “He might be impossible to live with.”

"What - leaving his pants on the floor?"

“What – leaving his pants on the floor and forgetting to flush the toilet?” Luned wonders.

Kelly seems to have the same problem

Kelly says that if she had an affair every time Jason did that, she would be busy.

“Do you know what Rhys did?” Luned goes on, “He cut his toenails in the kitchen!” and they agree that is reprehensible, but Kelly maintains he has a gorgeous face.

"I hope you're here to apologise!"

Eifion arrives at the bar and Kelly roars, “I hope you’re here to apologise!”   On the contrary he says he is there for a pint, and Luned urges Kelly to leave it, as she does not want a fuss.

"One foot wrong, and I'll deck him!"

Kelly agrees, but specifies, “One foot wrong, and I’ll deck him!”

Eifion has been called to Maes-y-Deri

Eifion’s phone rings;  it is Kath, who would like to see him at Maes-y-Deri.   He says that he will be over there right away, and hurries out of the Deri.   Kelly is still angry;  “No apology – nothing!” she growls.

Guto selects a video

Guto is selected a video for the two of them to watch, and his father requests, “I want to see blood and people punching each other,” so they decided on Die Hard III.

“Have you heard from her today?” Guto asks, and is told that she tried to phone, but Gerwyn could not answer – he does not know why,

"I can understand that, Dad"

but Guto can understand.

Gerwyn is suffering from mixed feelings

“I don’t,” sighs Gerwyn, “I love her and I hate her.   One minute I never want to see her again, and the next I can’t live without her.   I just don’t understand when things went so wrong.”

"It was the moment she went behind your back"

Guto points out to him that it was the moment she went behind his back.

“It’s her fault – no-one else’s,” Guto stresses, “I hate her!”

"Remember she is still your mother, Guto"

His father warns him not to talk about her like that, as although things are hard, she is still his mother.   “Why should I stick up for her, Dad?   She didn’t care about us when she left,” Guto goes on, “She doesn’t deserve us.”

Eifion tries to calm things

At Maes-y-Deri, Eifion is in a much more conciliatory mood this time;  “Before we start, I’d like to say sorry about this morning.   I’ve got a lot on my mind.”

"Luned got it worse than me"

“Well, from what I heard, Luned got it far worse than I did,” Kath comments, and Eifion tries to excuse himself by claiming some days the grief gets too much for him.   He misses Jim, and is sure that Kath feels the same.

"I'm ready to discuss the matter . . ."

She answers with great feeling, “Oh yes, I do,” and confirms that she is ready to discuss the matter.   “Now, Jim left the fields to me because he was a good friend –

". . . hang on, let me finish"

“let me finish – I’m sure that Jim would want the land to be used for farming, and I’m not the person to do that.”

"Not a penny less than £15,000"

Eifion is becoming much more confident and enquires if she is ready to sell;  the answer is, “Yes – for £15,000 – not a penny less than £15,000!”

Eifion's haggling is in vain . . .

He offers 12,000, and then 13,000, which he says is his final offer.

. . . as Kath's mind is made up

“There’s no use in offering me a penny less than £15,000,” Kath states quite categorically, and he argues that she cannot do this.   She corrects him, “Yes, I can, because I own it – if you don’t want it, I can find someone else.”

As expected, he is desperate to get the land

Much against his will, he is forced to admit that they have a deal, and she suggests that they find something in the fridge with which to celebrate, although he does not look in a celebrating mood.

A game of 'Snog Marry, Avoid'

In the Deri, Kelly and Luned play ‘Snog, Marry, Avoid’;  Kelly suggests Dai, Colin and Mark.   Luned finds this a difficult choice,

"I would marry Dai"

and concludes, “I would marry Dai,” just as Anita comes in.

"I didn't know you were coming here tonight"

“I didn’t know you two were coming in here tonight,” Anita remarks, “You should have said.”

"Luned's just decided to marry Dai"

She is informed that Luned has just decided to marry Dai,

Anita looks bemused

which Anita finds somewhat confusing and walks away.

“Do you feel better about everything now?” Kelly asks,

"I would rather marry Dai than Eifion!"

and Luned confirms that she would prefer to marry Dai rather than Eifion.

Kelly is rather embarrassed by the adulation

“Thanks to you, I feel better – you’re an amazing boss!” she tells Kelly,

"I'm really lucky to have such a good boss and friend"

“I’m really lucky to have such a good boss and friend.”   Anita looks rather disturbed when she hears this.

Eifion ahs a celebratory can

Eifion is drinking from a can

He says he has big plans

when Kath asks if he has any plans for these fields;  “Oh yes – big ones too!” he smiles.

"Will Eileen be all right about this?"

She wonders if Eileen will be all right with this, and he dismissively remarks,

"She hasn't been a good friend to you"

“Who cares?   She hasn’t been a good friend to you, after the fiasco with the will.”

Kath does not want to see her getting hurt again, and proposes that she will inform Eileen,

He is anxious to break the news himself

but Eifion does not want her to tell anyone, maintaining, “This will be big news for them – I would prefer to tell them myself.   I want them to know exactly what’s going on, you see.”

He looks smug — but where is all that money coming from?

He looks pleased with himself,

Is Kath also planning something?

but Kath appears to have her own agenda.
