"I've sorted a visit to the plot"

As Eileen and Siôn come round the corner by MFC, they are spotted by Eleri, who informs them that she has sorted a visit to the plot later.

Hywel can see what is going on . . .

At that moment Hywel is coming out of the Quantum Hydro Works office and hears her continue, “We’re accepting offers this afternoon.”

Siôn is very pleased to hear this and tells Eileen that she is a step closer to her big vision.

. . . so does his best to dissuade them

Hywel hurries across;  “A little bird tells me you’re thinking of making an offer for Quantum Hydro Works land.”

Eileen is immediately suspicious

Eileen immediately replies, “Perhaps – why?”   Hywel warns them not to offer over the odds for the place.

"A lot of work will have to be done"

“We did a survey on the land the other day and a lot of work will have to be done before anyone can build foundations.”

"Thanks for the info, Hywel"

Siôn is grateful for that advice;  Eileen is obviously suspicious.   Siôn maintains that Hywel is a good bloke, deep down, but she believes otherwise.

They encounter Eleri again

Then, as they continue along the street, they meet Eleri again;

"Does Hywel represent people who fancy a plot?"

“Does Hywel represent people who fancy a plot?” Eileen asks her.   She points out that they try to keep their clients’ information confidential.

"He's trying to plant seeds of doubt"

Eileen continues that Hywel has just been trying to plant seeds of doubt in their minds.

"Gaynor and Tom"

This somewhat loosens Eleri’s tongue and she tells them, “Gaynor and Tom.”

"Right, we're going to see the plot today!"

Eileen comes to the conclusion that they are also going to see the plot today.

"You've been like a bottle of pop this morning"

At Bryntirion, Diane is clearing away Dai’s breakfast things;  he tells her to mind where she is putting her feet, remarking, “You’ve been like a bottle of pop this morning!”   She promises to be out of his way in a moment

"My toenails need to be cut"

and he reminds her, “My toenails need to be cut, remember.   They’re starting to poke through my socks – I’ll look like a donkey from Killarney soon!”

"You're just in time to give me a pedicure!"

Then they hear a familiar voice and Dai exclaims, “Kelly – you’re just in time to give me a pedicure!”

"You're back to your usual self, then"

She is pleased to see that he is back to his usual self – and no-one would know that he had a massive fall.

"The only massive thing was the queue in A&E"

“The only massive thing was the queue in A&E!” he complains.

"You're still in your pyjamas, Diane"

Kelly insists that she will do the washing up, as Diane is still in her pyjamas;  she will also make a cup of tea, which Dai regards as a good idea.

Ffion arrives at the Deri

Ffion comes into the Deri, where Simon is chatting to Madge;  Gaynor and Tom are also there.

"Looking forward to it"

“Is everything still okay for later on – discussing the wedding here?” Gaynor asks and Ffion lies that she is looking forward to it.

"This time tomorrow, we might own that plot"

“And this time tomorrow, we might own that plot,” Gaynor goes on;  this comes as news to Ffion,

"Don't get too excited"

but Tom advises that they should not get too excited.

"But we want it so much, don't we?"

“But we want it so much, don’t we?”

"Good luck to you"

Ffion insincerely wishes them good luck.

An accident waiting to happen

Dai has now fallen asleep in his chair while holding his cup of tea;

"Do you want your nails painted?"

in the kitchen, Kelly asks if Diane would like her nails painted, but she answers that there is no point, as it will have peeled off with all the tidying up she has to do.

“Come on, Diane, treat yourself,” Kelly urges

"There's no point trying to argue with you"

and Diane realises that there is no point trying to argue with her.

"How are things at home . . ."

She will have the clear nail varnish and asks how things are at home,

". . . I know – difficult"

before supplying the answer herself, “Difficult.   It’s a terrible illness.”

"And you're the power of attorney"

Kelly reminds her that she is the power of attorney.   “I wasn’t sure if you knew.   I’m sure the arrangements for the party are adding to the strain.”

"She got the date wrong and everything"

“And she’s got the date wrong and everything, like, poor thing,” groans Kelly,

"Who wants to be reminded that they're 40?"

“I didn’t even want a party – who wants to be reminded that they’re 40?”

Diane insists that 40 is young and she would do anything to be 40 again;

"Just wait until you're my age!"

“Just wait until you’re my age – even my aches ache!”

"Constantly reminding Auntie Anita that it's 2025"

Aches I can handle – constantly reminding Auntie Anita that it’s 2025, not so much,” Kelly sighs, then realises that sounds awful.

Diane appreciates that she is a great support to Anita;  “It’s only natural that things feel like a burden sometimes.

"Has the time come to get some help?"

“Do you think that perhaps the time has come to get some help?   Being on call day and night is a lot for anyone.”

Kelly is ken to do it

Kelly argues that she is young enough to do it – and is keen to do it.   Diane wants that it is not a matter of age, pointing out that Kelly is a carer now – and so is Ieuan.

"Carers need a break sometimes"

She stresses that carers need a break sometimes.

"Auntie Neet will think we've given up on her"

“But Auntie Neet will think we’ve given up on her – and I’d never do that!” Kelly exclaims;

"Think about it, Kelly"

Diane thinks that she would understand and encourages Kelly to think about it.

"Oh, Crikey Moses!"

Suddenly they hear an anguished cry from the next room, “Oh, Crikey Moses!”

Kelly to the rescue

Kelly rushes to clear up the tea which he has spilt all down his jumper.

"There's a disaster round every corner!"

“There’s a disaster around every corner!” he shouts.

Tom approaches the Quantum Hydro Works office where Gaynor is waiting for him;

Hywel takes them to the plot

Hywel comes out and asks if they are ready to go.

Eileen and Siôn are also there

Eileen and Siôn are also approaching,

"Come in for a coffee"

so Eleri invites them into the office for a cup of coffee.

"Do you have decaf?"

“Do you have decaf?” Siôn asks, “I try not to overdo the caffeine after lunch.”

"I could have had third degree burns!"

At Bryntirion, Dai is going on at length about his little accident;  “I could have had third degree burns there!   The last thing I want to do is end up in A&E again!”   He is told by Diane not to be so dramatic as the tea was as cold as ice;  she will make him another one now.

"And a pack of Garibaldis"

He would prefer to have orange juice and a pack of Garibaldis,

"In your dreams, good boy!"

but is told, “In your dreams, good boy!   You can have two Garibaldis.”

"How is he, since the fall?"

In the kitchen, Kelly asks how he is since the fall, as he was struggling just now.

"The arthritis is getting worse"

Diane confirms that the arthritis is getting worse and he has some awful episodes sometimes, poor thing.

"It's luck that you're fighting fit"

“It’s lucky that you’re fighting fit,” comments Kelly.

“Listen – promise me you’ll at least think about what I said earlier – there’s no shame in having some help, Kelly.   You need to live your life as well.”

Again Diane puts the idea in Kelly's head

Kelly appears to be getting the message.

A shallow valley for a reservoir, surely

In a field overlooking what appears to be a very shallow valley

What exactly constitutes this 'plot'?

Hywel is showing Gaynor and Tom the plot in question. [is the ‘plot’ the entire field or just an unmarked section of it?]  “What, do you think, then?   It’s a perfect spot, isn’t it – and a great investment?”

"Completely inspiring!"

Gaynor regards it as completely inspiring, but Tom reminds her that there is no guarantee they would get planning permission.   Hywel points out, “It will be first come, first served with the offers – and I’d put in a decent offer from the start if I were you.”

"I'll meet you back by the car"

Then Hywel’s phone sounds and he says he will meet them back by the car.

"We don't want appear too keen"

Tom cautions Gaynor that they do not want to appear to keen;  “He wants to do things 100 miles an hour!   He wants to beat Eleri to the sale.”

Gaynor appears to have fallen in love with the place;

"Growing old here together"

“Just imagine – you and me growing old here together.”

Tom has a message . . .

Then Tom’s phone sounds and he looks at it, taking care that Gaynor cannot see it.

. . . and says he is going to the Portakabin . . .

“I need to sort something out at the Portakabin,” he tells her,

. . . any guesses where he is actually going?

“I’ll see you back in the village.

"There – you're 'banging'!"

Kelly has finished Diane's nails and she describes them as, “Banging!”

"Don't forget to pop in"

Diane reminds her not to forget to pop in now and again – when she has time, of course.

"Toodle-pip, Dai!"

Kelly shouts to Dai that she is off now and will see him next week.

"Thanks for everything you've done"

He thanks her for everything she has done today and,

"She's a nice girl, isn't she?"

when she has gone, tells Diane, “She’s a nice girl, isn't she?”

Diane emphasises that she is going through a lot with Anita;

"They desperately need a carer . . ."

“They desperately need a carer –

". . . do you think we need one?"

“do you think we need one?”

"Heavens, no . . ."

“What – a carer?   Heavens, no!

". . . that's for old codgers in their 90s"

“Old codgers in their 90s and people who are much older need carers – well, and people like poor Anita.

"We're fine as we are here"

“We’re fine as we are here – we’re comfortable and independent.”

"Ham salad for lunch?"

Diane now has to get up and prepare lunch, suggesting a ham salad;

"No cucumber"

Dai reminds her, “No cucumber.”

"Not too much salad cream"

She adds, “And plenty of salad cream – but not too much.”

Now Eileen and Siôn are viewing the 'plot'

Now Eleri is escorting Eileen and Siôn across that same field;

"I can see it now"

he  envisages, “That is where it will be – I can see it now – I’m sure the language centre will capture Quantum Hydro Works’ imagination.   A chance to restore the community’s faith in the dam.”

"Will you shut up about the centre?"

“Will you shut up about the centre?   We haven’t agreed on anything yet,” Eileen reprimands him.

Eleri wonders if they are like this at home, then continues her sales pitch,

"When the new estate is finished"

“Whoever gets it, they’re certain to be very lucky with this location when the new estate is finished.”

"I thought the estate was at Cwrtmynach"

Eileen had been under the impression that the new estate was being built in Cwrtmynach.

"There will be a lot more people in the area"

“Yes, but it will mean there will be a lot more people in the area,” Eleri explains.

Siôn imagines that there could be a crowd of new Welsh learners there as well;  Eleri assures him that whatever the business will be, there will be plenty of promotion around the estate.

"What sort of houses?"

“What sort of houses will be on the estate?” asks Eileen;  Eleri will show her the plans now if she wants, pointing out that they are going to be large, luxury houses.

"So they will have money to spend?"

“So the people who buy them will have money to spend?” says Eileen, greedily and they study the plans.

"You shouldn't be here!"

“You shouldn’t be here!” snarls Ffion, so it is immediately obvious who the visitor to Deri Fawr is, even before he appears.

Yes, you guessed correctly!

He knows that he has hurt her;  he saw her face in the Deri earlier, when they were discussing buying the plot.

"I can't live without you"

“I mean it, Ffion – I can’t live without you – I can’t – please” he pathetically begs, “I don’t want to buy this plot – it’s Gaynor that . . . I didn’t plan you and me – it just happened.   But I can be honest with you and you can with me.   Do you know how rare that is?   I can’t do that with Gaynor.”

"Why are you marrying her, then?"

Predictably, Ffion demands, “Why are you marrying her, then?” and he appears temporarily lost for words.

“It’s you I want, OK?   You and no-one else –

"There are things I have to sort out"

“but there are things I have to sort out first, before we can be together.”

"What do you want to 'sort out'?"

She cannot understand what he wants to ‘sort out’, so she issues him with an ultimatum.   “I mean it, Tom – if you want a future with me – not an affair – a proper relationship, the things you tell me, the promises and big statements, have to start matching up with what you do!”

"Life's not that simple, Ffion"

He says that he is quite aware of that, but life is not that simple.

"Don't make an offer – and cancel the wedding!"

“It is – don’t make an offer for the plot – and cancel the wedding!” she instructs him,

"If you really want to make a go of things – do it . . ."

“If you really want to make a go of things, do it –

". . . by tonight!"

“by tonight!”

Tom is speechless

This leaves him speechless.

"There's no point wasting time"

As Eileen and Siôn return to the shop flat, she proposes, “There’s no point wasting time – let’s go for it, shall we?”

"Hold on a minute"

Siôn wants her to hold on for a minute;  “Those disparaging comments earlier about the centre, in front of Eleri.   I want to know if you’ve got doubts – now is the time.”

"There are a lot of ideas on the table"

She explains that there are a lot of ideas on the table,

"And mine is already off the table"

but he gets the impression that his idea is already off the table.

"I have an idea myself"

No, not at all.   I like your idea – to be honest, I have an idea myself – a farm shop.   A chance for the public to buy Cae Glas produce – and have lunch, perhaps.

"Once we start making money"

And then we can build the centre near it – once we start making money, that is.”

"A shed out the back, is it?"

He suggests that it will most likely be a shed out the back, but now Eileen is losing her temper.

"We have to get a move on!"

“Look, Siôn, if we want this plot, we have to get a move on and put an offer in!   Or Tom and Gaynor will get it.”

"Perhaps Tom and Gaynor should have it, then"

He gets up from his chair and declares, “Well, perhaps Tom and Gaynor should have it, then – if they’re on the same page and respect each other.”   She assures him that she does respect him, but he is already walking out of the flat.

Tom is in the garden at Llwyncelyn . . .

Tom is walking down the garden at Llwyncelyn;  when he reaches the spot where Cheryl is buried,

. . . and is in quite a quandary

he stops and turns to look.

"What am I supposed to do, Cher?"

“What am I supposed to do, Cher?” he asks.

So this is where she was interred

Sinking to his knees,

"I'll have to leave you"

he continues, “If I leave Gaynor, I’ll have to leave you.”

Ffion is back at the Deri

Meanwhile, Ffion is arriving at the Deri and apologises to Gaynor that she is late for their meeting, giving the excuse that she had a problem with the car engine.

"Where's Colin?"

She wonders where Colin and is told that he is also late.

"None of it is really important"

“I know I’m fussing about these wedding arrangements,” says Gaynor, pouring herself another glass of wine, “But none of it’s really important, is it?

"Only Tom and me are important"

“It’s only Tom and me who are important, isn’t it?   And I’m so glad that you’ll be by my side through all this, because, well, when you think about it, we’ve been through a lot together, haven’t we?”

"How many glasses have you had?"

Ffion queries how many glasses of wine she has had,

"We'll be neighbours"

while Gaynor goes on, “If we get this plot, we’ll be neighbours – imagine the barbecues!”

Then Gaynor looks puzzled and asks, “You?   Will you do a speech for me on the wedding day?”

She does not look keen

Ffion is about to give her answer

Tom comes in

when Tom comes in;  she rather reluctantly agrees to give a speech and Gaynor,

Gaynor hugs Ffion . . .

predicting that it will be perfect, hugs Ffion.

. . . which he finds unsettling

Tom finds this rather unsettling.

"Come and sit down a minute, Diane"

Diane apologises to Dai that she had to go and have a little nap, but as she picks up his lunch dishes, he urges her to leave them there for a minute.   “Come and sit here.

"Dic and I tried to persuade Mam . . ."

“Dic and I tried to persuade Mam to get some help for years, but she wouldn’t listen to us.   Dic and I were on our knees by the end –

"Dic was completely useless"

“especially Dic – he was completely useless.”

"Perhaps the time has come to have a bit of help"

“So I’ve been thinking, perhaps the time has come for us to have a bit of help.   It’s only fair that you can go out sometimes to enjoy yourself – a couple of shots with ‘Glenys Pop’, then you can come back and tell me all the scandals.”

Diane is surprised by this

Diane is surprised at this change of attitude;  “Well, that is why these people exist,” she says, “To make life easier.

"We'll look into it next week"

“We’ll look into it next week – what do you say?”

“It sounds good to me,” he replies, “What would I do without you, Diane?”

Marital harmony

and kisses her,

"My toenails still need to be cut"

adding, “Mind you, my toenails still need to be cut,”

"Something to look forward to"

so she regards that as something to look forward to.

They are talking about the hen night

Tom stands by the bar with a pint in his hand and a vacant look on his face, while in the background Gaynor and Ffion are discussing the hen night.   Gaynor does not want to go far and does not want anything ‘tacky’.

“But you want more than just Colin and me?” asks Ffion, and she thinks one or two more, perhaps.

Tom joins them

Tom picks up his packet of crisps and joins them.

"You look very serious"

“Are you all right?” Gaynor asks him, “You look very serious.   What have you done?   I know that face.”

He appears very reluctant to answer,

"I've done something silly"

but finally tells Gaynor, “You’re right – there is something – I need to talk to you.   I’ve done something silly.”

"I'd better go"

Ffion expects that he is about to carry out what she told him to do earlier, and thinks that she should leave, but is told by Gaynor to stay.

"I've made an offer on the plot"

“I’ve made an offer on the plot,” he tells her, much to Ffion’s annoyance, “A little over the asking price.”

Gaynor is ecstatic . . .

Gaynor is so delighted that she gets up and hugs him, so he tells her that she needs a little less of that Sauvignon Blanc.

. . . and will get some champagne

“Yes, we’re having champagne!” Gaynor decides and heads for the bar.

"Sorry – I had to"

“Sorry!” Tom mutters to Ffion, “I had to.”

Ffion storms out

Ffion’s response is to get up and immediately storm out of the Deri.
