The 'trick or treaters' are out |
Some children are knocking on the door of number 9
Jinx peers through the blind |
and Jinx peers through the blind; as there is no reply, they walk away.
Jinx turns to Dani and demands, “What’s wrong with people? You’d think these parents would have a bit more sense. "What's wrong with people?"
“Do you want me to put a sign on the door asking people not to knock?”
Dani is 'out of it' |
Dani does not reply.
Flamingos is being cleaned up |
"We need to clean this properly" |
“Come on – we need to clean this properly before the grand opening next week,” DJ urges him.
"I'm supposed to be in APD this week" |
“I’m supposed to be in APD this week – thanks to your deal with Mathew,” complains. DJ just hopes that this business will work, because if the police come after him,
"I'll make sure they come after you as well!" |
he will make sure that they come after Jason as well.
The 'trick or treaters' have reached Y Felin |
The trick or treating has arrived at Y Felin, where Iolo presents the children with some sweets,
"Y&ou shouldn't encourage them" |
but Siôn shakes his head in disapproval. “You shouldn’t encourage them,” he tells his son, but is told that they are only kids out enjoying themselves.
"Im not going to make Greta sit in the dark" |
“I’m not going to make Greta sit in the dark with the curtains closed like we used to,” says Iolo, but his father considers that the whole thing is a disgrace.
"The kids won't have any teeth left" |
“Look at all this rubbish – these kids won’t have any teeth left!” moans Siôn.
"Or do you think it's a bad idea"?" |
Iolo reveals that he is taking these things round to Dani; “Or do you think it’s a bad idea?”
"It's rather insensitive" |
His father does think that it may be insensitive, but on the other hand, seeing him and Greta might do her good.
"Do you want to come with us?" |
Cai comes downstairs and is asked whether he fancies coming out with Iolo and Greta.
"I'm not in the mood for that nonsense" |
“No thanks, I’m not in the mood for nonsense like that.”
Apparently, Siôn is planning to carve a pumpkin,
"Calon Gaeaf, yes!" |
but makes it very plain, “Calon Gaeaf, [Heart of Winter] yes – but Hallowe’en is totally different!”
"I need to get more clothes for Gaynor" |
Cheryl has just walked into Llwyncelyn and is speaking on the phone; “I need to get more clothes for Gaynor – she sounded OK on the phone,
"They haven't said when she can come home" |
“but they still haven’t said when she can come home.”
At that moment, the front door opens and Tom walks in, as Cheryl concludes her call, “I’ll phone you when I leave the hospital.”
She has a shock . . . |
Then she turns and gets a shock
. . .when Tom is suddenly standing there |
on seeing Tom standing there.
"It doesn't matter what I wear" |
At Penrhewl, Eileen is talking to Malcolm Edwards on the phone; “All I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter what I wear,” she tells him. Apparently, he is of a conflicting opinion so she agrees that she has a few things in the wardrobe. She thanks him for the advice and will see him in court.
"Who's Mam-gu's favourite little girl?" |
She is obviously becoming rather nervous, then looks down one of the twins; “Who’s Mam-gu’s favourite little girl?”
Siôn comes in |
Siôn arrives at the house; she says that she would have tidied up if she knew he was coming.
"Isn't she beautiful?" |
“Congratulations to you all, let me see – isn’t she beautiful – is there a name yet?”
"This is Lili" |
Eileen advises that this is Lili and Jac is out with his mother getting some fresh air. “Lili Wen Fach – she’s staring at me!” he laughs and Eileen says that she is very aware of things. “Just like her grandmother, then,”Siôn remarks.
“Jac isn’t quite so focused yet,” she adds,
"Men take a bit longer sometimes" |
and Siôn appreciates that men take a bit longer sometimes.
Some books of poems for the twins |
He has brought a present for the twins – ‘Wales’ Best Poems’ and ‘More of Wales’ Best Poems’. “To introduce them to the literary treasures of our country,” he tells Eileen.
"I love Grandma" |
There is also a present for Eileen – a mug with the words ‘Rwy’n Caru Mam-gu’, [I love grandma].
"Stay for a cup of tea" |
She will make tea now and asks if Siôn would like a cup.
"What then hell are you doing here?" |
Tom insists that he did not mean to frighten Cheryl, but she simply demands, “What the hell are you doing here?”
"Gaynor asked me to pick up a few things" |
He says that Gaynor asked him to pick up a few things, and she snarls that she was also asked to do the same.
He has no idea why Gaynor would ask both of them; he has been tasked with choosing a few books for her.
"She asked me for more underwear" |
“And she asked me for more underwear,” Cheryl sighs.
"Probably why I was not asked to get it" |
Tom realises that is why he was not asked to get that.
"Right, see yourself out" |
“Right, choose your books and see yourself out,” she instructs him, but he was thinking about making a coffee before he went. Cheryl flatly forbids this;
"Sorry – I'll get those books" |
he realises that he should not have asked and will get those books.
"You haven't eaten anything . . ." |
Jinx finds Danny in her usual recumbent pose on the sofa, having not eaten anything;
". . . you really must eat, Dani" |
he urges her to eat something, but then there is another knock at the door.
"Who's that at the door?" |
Jinx is all prepared to tell them to clear off, but then discovers that it is Iolo and Greta.
"Aren't you lovely – or ugly?" |
“Aren’t you lovely in your costume? Or ugly – I’m not too sure,” says Jinx, while Dani looks horrified.
"I've brought something for you, Dan" |
Iolo has brought something for Dani from the new shop in Llanarthur, where there is so much variety.
Dani simply states at Greta |
Meanwhile Dani is staring fixedly at Greta.
In the kitchen, Jinx reports that Dani has not slept for a fortnight and that he is busy. “I’m looking after Gabriel –
"Dani can't face doing anything" |
“Dani can’t face doing anything.” Iolo is confident that things will change with time.
"She's just lost her daughter" |
“She’s just lost her daughter – time will never change that!” Jinx protests
"I shouldn't have come" |
and Iolo comes to the conclusion that he should not have visited, but is persuaded to help Jinx.
Greta is feeling uncomfortable |
Greta finds being stared at by Dani rather disconcerting.
"I don't know why this is so dirty" |
As they continue working on the horse-box, Jason complains, “I don’t know why this is so dirty when you’ve only used it once,” but DJ is staring at his phone. “We’ll have to do a deep clean after every outing for now on, DJ – or is it all right for you to slack?”
"Sioned has drawn up a rota . . ." |
DJ has been looking at a rota, drawn up by Sioned to say when he can see the children;
". . . so everyone knows where they stand" |
“So everyone knows where they stand! A spreadsheet to say when I can see my own children!”
"It's only temporary" |
He is reminded that it is only a temporary measure,
"Twice a week – they will hardly know me!" |
but goes on, “Twice a week – they will hardly know me!” Jason points out that he has rights,
"Why is that thing parked there?" |
then Rhys comes out of number 21, demanding why that thing is parked outside.
"This is the new home of the Flamingos van" |
DJ informs him that this is the new home of the ‘Flamingos’ van.
"I didn't give you permission" |
“I didn’t give you permission to park outside my business,” Rhys tells him, but DJ proudly announces that he has a licence from the council.
"That wreck will ruin Ceffyl Du's image!" |
“That wreck will ruin ‘Ceffyl Du’s image!” Rhys rages, but DJ protests that he has worked hard on it. “You’ll have to move it – ‘Ceffyl Du’ is opening on November the 5th – and I don’t want that near the place! Bonfire Night –
"I want to open with a bang!" |
“I want to open with a bang!”
"We're opening that night" |
DJ announces that they are also opening that night, so Rhys will have to pick another night. He insists that their previous engagement was a soft launch, but this is the official opening.
"I'm not changing my plans!" |
Rhys will not change his plans and DJ whines, “We need the customers!”
“What do you think the brewery needs, then?” Rhys laughs, but DJ needs this opening night to go well.
"It doesn't look like you're anywhere near ready" |
“It doesn't look like you’re anywhere near being ready, boys – perhaps you should phone Mrs Hinch for some help.”
"These are too sweet" |
Iolo realises that cakes he has brought for Dani are too sweet, which Jinx put down to the amount of icing. Iolo thinks that he will get the jam ones from Tamed in future.
Dani remains silent |
Meanwhile Dani says nothing,
"I'm gad you and Cai had a chat" |
so Iolo begins, “I’m glad you and Cai had a chat yesterday.”
"Did you?" |
Jinx did not know anything about this and Iolo continues, “I saw the poster that Britt made – Cai’s very upset.”
"Did you come to do his dirty work for him"" |
Finally, Dani speaks, “Is that why you came? To do his dirty work for him?
"He takes no responsibility for killing my daughter! |
I’m talking about that swine saying he takes no responsibility for killing my daughter!”
"Can I have a chocolate, Dad?" |
Greta asks Iolo if she can have a chocolate and he asks her to go with him into the kitchen.
"What happened yesterday, Dani?" |
Jinx demands, “What happened yesterday, Dani?”
"He said none of this was his fault" |
“He wanted to make it clear that none of this was his fault,” she explains,
"You must have misunderstood" |
but Iolo is sure that she must have misunderstood.
"He just blamed my daughter!" |
“He wasn’t sorry, Iolo – he just blamed my daughter!”
Jinx grabs his coat and is about to go and sort out Cai,
"No, Jinx – this won't help anyone!" |
but Iolo persuades him not to do so, as it will not help anyone. “You stay here with Dani – that’s what’s best – and I’ll have a word with Cai.”
"Come on, Greta – we're going" |
He calls for Greta and they leave the house.
Jinx is in a foul temper |
When they have gone, Jinx flings down his coat in a temper
. . . and Dani is distraught |
and Dani is distraught. “I don’t know what to do,” he sighs,
"I don't know how to look after you, Dani" |
“I don’t know how to look after you, Dani.”
"I don't know either" |
She does not know either. He growls that he could throttle Cai – kill him;
"It's his fault that Seren is not here with us now!" |
“I just want him to suffer because this is his fault – it’s his fault that Seren is not here with us now!”
"Remember this book from school?" |
Tom brings one book to Cheryl’s attention; “Do you remember this from school?” She frowns at him and he thinks that perhaps he should have picked something a bit more jolly.
"Not with the Deri closed" |
Then he asks if she is busy, so she sneers, “Not with the Deri closed, no.”
"I had to employ an extra person" |
He points out that he is very busy and has had to employ an extra person to help out.
“There’s a lot of opposition to this dam scheme.”
"People don't want their homes to be drowned" |
Cheryl says it is hardly a shock that people do not want their homes to be drowned. “I don’t agree with what they’re doing –
"Everyone has to do something for a living" |
“but everyone has to do something for a living.”
“You could have found a job somewhere else,” Cheryl tells him,
"Why did you leave the force anyway" |
“Why did you leave the force, anyway?”
"There's more money in the private sector" |
He replies that there is more money to be made in the private sector.
"What do you want from me, Dave?" |
She is about to leave the house, demanding, “What do you want from me, Dave?”
He insists that he does not want anything, so she goes on, “Why are you here? What’s your game?”
"What do you want me to say?" |
He maintains that there is no game and wonders what she wants him to say; that he is there because of her? Is that what she would like?
"I saved your life" |
“Look, I don’t want to argue,” he says, “I just want us to be friends – or civil, at least. I saved your life!”
"Why did you choose me?" |
She comes back in and shouts, “ I’m grateful, but I’m still asking myself, why did you choose me?”
"I'd choose you every time" |
He is surprised that she really does not know; “I’d choose you every time – sorry if that complicates things.”
Then his phone rings |
This tense moment is interrupted by the ringing of Tom’s phone.
"Cheryl is here as well" |
“Hiya, I’m at Llwyncelyn and Cheryl is here as well –
"Oh, great – I'm so glad!" |
“oh, great – I’m so glad! OK, I’ll see you soon.”
"Gaynor can come home next week" |
He announces to Cheryl that Gaynor can come home next week, which she regards as great;
He picks up the box of books and goes . . . |
he picks up his box of books and leaves the house,
. . . passing for a moment by the door |
while she looks very troubled.
"Malcolm wants me to wear a suit" |
As they do the washing up at Penrhewl, Eileen tells Siôn, “Malcolm wants me to wear a suit to make a good impression. So that I look like a respectable member of the community.”
"I don't think I've ever seen you in a suit" |
Siôn does not believe that he has ever seen her in a suit.
“No, you haven’t,” she growls, “Because I look ridiculous in them.”
"I used to wear one every Sunday" |
Siôn can remember when he had to wear one every Sunday when he was leading Bethania; “I always felt so restricted in them, you know?”
Eileen does not want to feel like that; “I know next week will be difficult, but I want to feel comfortable.”
"The jury will be looking for sincerity" |
Siôn maintains that the jury will be looking for sincerity – and she will have plenty of that, no matter what she wears.
"You says some sensible things sometimes" |
“You say some sensible things sometimes, don’t you?” she remarks,
"Only when I'm wearing these" |
but points out that it is only when he is wearing rubber gloves for washing up.
DJ and Jason go to number 21 . . . |
DJ and Jason go to number 21;
. . . but Rhys is not changing his mind |
Rhys is adamant, “If this is about my launch night, I’m not going to change my mind.”
DJ tells him to listen, as they have an idea which will benefit them all.
"It's obvious – we combine the two" |
Jason takes over to explain, “It’s obvious – we combine the two. Bonfire Night, beer from Ceffyl Du and food from Flamingos.”
DJ can see a lot of profit in this |
DJ adds that a lot of people will be out celebrating – they will want something to eat and something to drink; “We shall make a lot of profit if we just work together.” Jason points out that they could have a special offer; if they buy from one, they could get a discount from the other.
"That's a good idea, boys" |
Rhys has to admit that it is a good idea.
"Just one condition" |
However, he has one condition; “You put plenty of salt on the food, so everyone’s thirsty and drinks more.
They will have a drink to celebrate |
Right, a drink to celebrate our new partnership.”
"All right, I'm coming!" |
There is a banging on the door of Y Felin and a voice calls, “Hello – Cai, Lleucu?”
"I must have left my key at Dani's" |
Iolo comes in with Greta and apologises that he has not got his key; he must have left it when he visited Dani.
He advises Cai that Dani was not great’;
"I don't think you helped either" |
“And I don’t think you helped, either. Did you tell Dani that what happened was Seren’s fault?”
"I'm not going to take the blame for this" |
Cai insists that he did not say that and is not going to take the blame for this;
"You could show a bit of sympathy" |
“No, but you could show a bit of sympathy!” complains Iolo. Cai says that is what he was trying to do.
“Listen, I had to stop Jinx coming over here to give you a hiding!” Iolo tells him.
"Like you did, right?" |
“Like you did, right?” demands Cai, which rather deflates Iolo.
"Sioned will think the fairy godmother has been" |
“Sioned will think the fairy godmother has been here,” predicts Eileen, but Siôn does not think that he has done a particularly good job.
"I remember having to depend on so many people" |
He can remember having to depend on so many people when the boys were small, but everyone was so willing to help.
"Most people have been avoiding Penrhewl" |
Eileen remarks that most people have been avoiding Penrhewl recently; Siôn says that she and Sioned make a good team. “But I’m scared, Siôn, because I've got so much to lose now.”
Siôn hugs Eileen |
He gives her a hug.
Dani creeps into Y Felin under cover of darkness |
It is dark in Y Felin when the door opens and Dani comes in.
She goes quietly upstairs . . . |
She looks around, then quietly goes upstairs.
. . . where Cai is asleep |
In his room, Cai is sleeping.
She looks through the open door . . . |
Dani looks in through the open door, then stealthily creeps forward,
. . . picks up a pillow . . . |
noticing a conveniently placed pillow, which she picks up.
. . . and is about to put an end to Cai |
With a determined look, she moves towards the bed and is about to deploy the pillow to suffocate Cai
"Auntie Dani – what are you doing?" |
when she hears a voice, challenging her, “Auntie Dani – what are you doing?”
Dani drops the pillow . . . |
Dani drops the pillow
. . . walks past Greta . . . |
and walks out past Greta, back down the stairs,
. . . realising the enormity of what she was about to do . . . |
where she suddenly looks behind her with some alarm,
. . . and hurries from the house |
then she rapidly leaves the house.
