Cassie has been talking about insurance

Cassie has been talking to an insurance assessor 

"What's going on here?"

when Eleri comes across the road, demanding what is going on.   

"Discussing the way forward"

“I’m just discussing the way forward with the insurance people,” Cassie replies.   

"Without your business partners?"

Eleri is surprised she is doing that without her business partners and is told, “It’s hard to discuss things with Kath when she won’t talk to me.”

"You're making a habit of going behindnher back"

“You’re making a habit of going behind her back,” says Eleri;  Cassie asks whether she is supposed to leave the Deri in this state.   Eleri maintains that she is just looking after her father’s interests.   She is invited to try and talk some sense into Kath.   

"You betrayed her – you talk to her!"

“You betrayed her – you talk to her!” sneers Eleri, 

"Now's your chance"

then sees Kath coming out of the shop and adds, “Now’s your chance.”

Kath tries to ignore Cassie

Cassie shouts to Kath, but she simply continues to walk along the street.   

Dyff whistles at Kath

Dyff is approaching and whistles to Kath;  “My name’s not Lassie!” she protests and he returns her cardigan.

"In case someone started a rumour"

“I thought I’d bring it over in case someone started a rumour – you know what people are like around here.”   She does not know what he is going on about, 

"Can you spare five minutes?"

so he asks if she can spare five minutes 

Dyff carries her bags

and carries her shopping back to Eleri’s flat.   

Cassie is watching

Cassie watches them go.

Inside Cysgod y Glyn he asks where Brynmor is;  

"You don't keep tabs on him like you did with me"

“You don’t keep tabs on him like you did with me?”   

"Because I can trust Brynmor"

She says that the difference is that she trusts Brynmor.

“Look, I wasn't happy with the way I left, honestly” he goes on, and she has heard that the tattoos have gone.

He used to have ‘Kath’ on his arm, 

"You got rid of them as easily as you got rid of me"

“But you got rid of them as easily as you got rid of me from your life.”   He explains that he was on witness protection and had to get rid of them.   

"If there had been smoother way, Kath . . ."

He insists that if there had been some other way . . . what we were talking about earlier – Mark and you . . .”

"Who are you?"

At this point Eleri walks in and demands who he is.   Kath wonders why she is there, so she replies, “I live here.”   Kath introduces Dyff to Eleri, Brynmor’s daughter.   

"I'm Kath's husband"

He says that he is Kath’s husband, 

"Ex-husband!"

but Kath makes it clear it is ‘ex-husband’.

He says that he has brought back Kath’s cardigan, which she left at Maes-y-Deri, 

"I left it on the night of the explosion"

whereupon Kath improvises that she left it on the night of the explosion.   

Dyff realises Kath wants him to go

Dyff takes the hint that he should go, commenting, “Nice to meet you, Ler.”   

"Eleri!"

She abrasively points out that her name is Eleri.

"Can I speak to DI Davies?"

In the shop flat, Mathew is making a phone call to DI Davies when Sioned comes up the stairs.   

"Have you talked to the police?"

“Have you talked to the police?” she breathlessly asks;  

"I'm on the phone to them now"

he announces that he is on the phone to them now.

"He'll get jail!   I'll be on my own!"

“He’ll get jail!   I'll be on my own!” she exclaims, so he points out that she has Eileen.   “Her court case is next week.”

Now Mathew is in two minds

Mathew’s resolve starts to waver as he is urged by Sioned to forget about DJ;  I’m asking you – please Math, put the phone down.”

"You're going to see Cassie"

Eleri instructs Kath, “When you’ve finished your tea, you’re going to see Cassie.”   

"Why would I want to do that?"

Kath does not know why she would want to do that, 

"She's talking to the insurance people"

so she is enlightened, “Because she is talking to the insurance people.   Are you happy for Cassie to take the lead on reopening the Deri?”

"Why is she doing that?"

Kath cannot understand why Cassie is talking to the insurance people.   

"The Deri blew up!"

Eleri reminds her, “The Deri blew up!”   Then she proceeds to denigrate Cassie, “I wouldn’t leave the house wearing that tacky blue eye-shadow.   And you didn’t leave that cardigan in Maes-y-Deri – I’ve seen you wear it since then – I remember thinking how ugly it was.”

"I went to Maes-y-Deri with a get well card"

Kath admits that she went to Maes-y-Deri to give Gaynor’s get well card to Mark – and Dyff was there;  “Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”

"Did you tell Dad?"

“Did you tell Dad?” Eleri wants to know, with a suspicious look.

"He's all right, deep down"

“There’s no future for DJ and me, but I still need him – he’s all right deep down,” pleads Sioned, 

"That's what I thought – before he stole the money"

and Mathew used to think the same way – before he stole the money.

"I don't want the village turning against him"

“Even if he doesn’t get jail, I don’t want the village turning against him – because of Jac and Lili.   I don’t want them growing up with people talking about their father,” Sioned pleads.

"You deserve so much better, Sioned"  (someone like Mathew?)

Mathew seems to have been persuaded and tosses down his phone;  “You deserve so much better,” he tells Sioned, “You deserve a person you can trust!”   

"It's hard to find that person"

She answers that it is hard to find that person.   

"Does DJ know there's no future for you?"

“Does DJ know there’s no future for you?” he asks.

Sioned insists, “Whatever our relationship is, I want him to be part of the children’s lives – 

"We need to find a way of sorting this, Mathew"

“but we need to find a way of sorting this out, Mathew, please.”

Cai hesitates before knocking

Cai walks nervously to the door of number 9 and after hesitating for a moment, knocks on it.   

Dani's mind is far away . . .

Inside, Danny is in her usual trance-like state, 

. . . ut she goes to open the door

but eventually goes to answer the door and is not pleased to see Cai.

"Sorry to disturb you, Dani"

He says that he is sorry to disturb her;  “I don’t know what to say – how are you?   Listen, Dani, I’m sorry if you think I’m responsible for what happened to Seren.   

"I don't think it was my fault"

“I’ve relived that day hundreds of times and I don’t think it was my fault – it was an accident.”

"Do you think you could have a word with her?"

T he shows her the libellous poster made by her sister-in-law;  “Do you think you could have a word with her?   Tell her to stop these stupid games – which are not helping anyone.   I’m not trying to put pressure on you, but, I don’t know – perhaps she’ll listen to you.”

Dani has been looking at him blankly

Although Dani has not said a word up until now, 

"You want me to make things easier for you?"

she begins, “And that’s the reason you came here?   You want me to make things easier for you?”   

"I wanted to see how you were coping"

He replies that he wanted to see how she was coping.

“How do you think I’m coping?   Can you sleep at night?   I can’t – not for weeks – because my daughter is lying in a morgue.”

Cai is sorry that she is in this horrible situation;  

"I now from experience . . ."

he knows from experience . . .   

"You have no idea what I'm going through!"

Dani immediately snarls, “Don’t you dare!   You have no idea what I’m going through – and you want me to help you?”

"It was not my fault"

Again Cai points out that it was not his fault, 

"You were supposed to look after her!"

but she shouts, “You were supposed to look after her!   If you hadn’t left her on her own, she’d be here now with me!   

"That's because of you – no-one else!"

“But she isn’t and that’s because of you – nobody else!”

"I told Seren to stay in the car"

He tries to explain that Seren was told to stay in the car, 

"I want you to go!"

but Dani orders him to get out of the house, which he does.

Kath goes to see Cassie 

Kath does in fact go to number 21, where Cassie is staying;  “Do you want a cup of tea?   

"I don't know where Hywel hides the vodka"

“I don’t know where Hywel hides the vodka,” says Cassie.   

"You've been talking to the insurance people"

Kath has heard that she has been talking to the insurance people.   

"So we can reopen"

“Yes, the sooner the better we sort out the paperwork so that we can reopen.”

"Did you tell them about the gas hobs?"

“What did you tell them about the gas hobs?” enquires Kath, and Cassie replies that there was nothing to say, which Kath is pleased to hear.

"You said you'd sorted it"

“I remember you saying a few weeks ago that there was a yellow flame on one of the hobs, but you said you’d sorted it,” recalls Cassie, “Didn’t you?”

"But I didn't"

“Well, I said I was going to – and said that I had – but I didn’t,” confesses Kath.   Cassie demands what came over her – they could have all been killed, 

"Brynmor hd just had a heart attack"

but Kath’s excuse is that she had a lot on her plate at the time;  “Brynmor had just had a heart attack!”

“Have you told anyone else about this?   Not even Brynmor or Eleri?” demands Cassie.   Upon hearing that Kath has not, 

"We act as if we know nothing"

Cassie resolves, “Right – we’re going to keep this between us two and act as if we know nothing.”

"You're the expert at doing that, aren't you?"

“Well, you’re the expert at that, aren’t you?” sneers Kath and once again Cassie points out that she did it for Jean.   Kath stresses that she does not want to hear any more about it.

"You're mire than happy to hear what Dyff's got to say"

“But you’re more than happy to hear what Dyff’s got to say – I saw you both, creeping your way to the flat.   You’re willing to forgive him, but no, you won’t consider doing that to me.”

"What do you mean – creeping?"

Cass takes issue with the word ‘creeping’, insisting that she has not forgiven anyone.   

"When you hear something, let me know"

“Right, as soon as you hear something from the insurance people, you let Brynmor and me know, OK?   This is just business – and that’s all it will be!”   She storms out of the house.

DJ prepares the babies' bottles

At Penrhewl DJ is heating the babies’ bottles when Sioned returns, accompanied by Mathew.   “What’s he doing here?”

"I've persuaded Mathew not to go to the police"

Sioned says that she and Mathew have been talking;  “I’ve persuaded him not to go to the police,” 

"I appreciate that, Mathew"

for which DJ is grateful, but there is more.   

"But you pay half your wages to APD"

“On the condition that you pay 50% of your wages to APD, until the debt has been repaid.”

"With interest!"

Mathew adds, “With interest.”

But there is more

Before DJ can make his objections, Sioned goes on, “And you’ll be expected to work for APD any time that Mathew needs you – on the same conditions – 50% of your wages.”

"That's a bit extreme"

DJ reckons that is rather extreme, 

Mathew regards it as more than fair 

but in Mathew’s opinion it is more than fair.   

"What about Jason?"

Then DJ asks about Jason and is told that the same conditions will apply to him as well.

"This is the only offer on the table"

Sioned advises him, “This is the only offer on the table for you, so take it – or Mathew will go to the police, today.”   

"There must be another way"

DJ argues that there must be another way, but Sioned makes it crystal clear, “If you want to prove you can be a father to Jac and Lili, take this deal!”

DJ has no choice but to agree;  he is warned that this is his last chance.   

"Miss one payment and I go to the police!"

“If you miss one payment, am going straight to the police – do you understand?”   

DJ has to agree

DJ thanks Mathew, 

"I'm not doing this for you!"

but is told, “I’m not doing this for you!” as Mathew leaves.

"I see you've made yourself at home"

Dyff opens the door at Maes-y-Deri to admit Cassie;  “I see you’ve made yourself at home,” she comments 

"It's nice to be home after 20 years"

and he says that it is nice to be home, after being away for 20 years.

"When are you leaving?"

“I know – and we’ve all coped with without you – when are you leaving?” she wants to know.   

"Mark still needs me"

He replies that while Mark still needs him, he will be staying there, as he is still quite low after that little girl was killed.

"Those whom live in the village"

“Yes, I know, like the rest of us – those who live in the village,” she continues.   

"I'm going to see Stacey in London"

Dyff intends to go to London over the weekend to see Stacey and says that it has done him good to see the children.

Cassie assumes that applies to Kath as well;  “I saw you talking to her as if nothing had happened.”   

"Kath and I understand each other"

He maintains that he and Kath understand each other – and always have done.

“Well, Kath and I understood each other – 

"Until you came here!

“until you came here!” Cassie growls.   Dyff says that she could have told Kath if she really wanted to.

"I don't know what Jean or Kath saw in you"

“Are you for real?   You have always been a bad lot,” she goes on, “I don’t know what Jean or Kath saw in you.”   

"You're welcome to find out!"

He quips that she is welcome to find out.

"I want you to leave ASAP!"

“I don’t have any chance of building bridges with Kath while you’re still here.   I want you to leave ASAP!” she snarls 

Off goes Cassie

and walks out of the house.

Cai sits on the bench

Cai is sitting glumly on the bench at the end of the alley when Cassie passes him;  

"Sorry I haven't been in touch"

he asks if everything is all right.   “I’m sorry I haven’t been in touch – I’ve had a lot going on.”   

"You're right there"

She agrees wholeheartedly with that.

"Do you fancy a coffee?"

“Do you fancy a coffee?” he asks, “I enjoy your company.”   

"I don't have time to be your agony aunt"

Cassie points out that she does not have the time to be his agony aunt, as she has so many problems of her own.   

"I'll see you around"

She says that she will see him around and continues along the street.

Dyff is busy on the laptop . . .

At Maes-y-Deri, Dyff is looking on the laptop and sees something of interest;  

. . . then phones Mr Humphries (Tom)

he dials a number on his phone.   “Mr Humphries, how are you?   

"That security job at Cwmderi . . ."

“I’m phoning about the security job on the new site in Cwmderi.   

". . . I'm interested"

“Yes, I’m interested.”

DJ looks over Sioned's shoulder

Sioned is also working on her laptop, with DJ looking over her shoulder;  

"Mathew can see how much of the debt is left"

“There you are – Mathew will be able to see how much of the debt is left – you can keep track of it on the app.”

"It will take ages to pay back"

DJ moans, “It will take ages to pay this back, thanks to this deal!” 

"It's better than going to jail"

but she reminds him that it will be better than going to jail.   He thanks her for sorting everything out for him;  

“I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

She objects to his hand on her shoulder 

“Let’s get one thing straight – I’ve done this for Jac and Lili – they deserve to have their father in their lives.”

He asks whether that applies to her as well;  

"Are you just putting up with me?"

“Or are you just putting up with me?”

"Yes

“Yes,” she answers, 

DJ is left alone and forlorn

walking out of the room and going upstairs.
