Smartly-dressed Howard |
A very smartly dressed Howard knocks on the door of number 7;
"I do my best, like" |
Kelly comes out and comments, “Wow, you look . . . tidy!” He agrees that so does she and she says, “Well, I do my best, like. I’m not ready really – standing in court is something I try to avoid.”
"I've been to court once or twice" |
“We’ll be fine, don’t worry,” he assures her, “I’ve been to court once or twice.” They leave as they do not want to be late for court,
"Eileen deserves everything she gets" |
on the way meeting Kath and Brynmor, who wish them good luck.
“Eileen deserves everything she gets – we’re behind you,” says Kath,
"Do you want to go to this?" |
then she notices a poster in the window of the deli about the brewery opening tonight.
"I thought we could have a takeaway for your birthday" |
Brynmor thought that they could have a takeaway to celebrate Kath’s birthday; she says that he spoils her.
"Why did she have cushion?" |
At the breakfast table in Y Felin, Greta is asking questions; “Why did she have a cushion? Auntie Dani in Uncle Cai’s room.”
"It was a bad dream" |
Siôn tells her that Auntie Dani was not in Uncle Cai’s bedroom and that it was simply a bad dream.
"You don't want to be late for school" |
“Now go and brush your teeth – you don’t want to be late for school, do you?”
Greta immediately does as she is told |
Greta obediently goes upstairs.
"That's some nightmare!" |
Cai comments, “That’s some nightmare – she hasn’t stopped talking about it for days.”
"Everyone has been talking about Dani" |
Siôn maintains that everyone has been talking about Dani and perhaps she has picked up on something. Cai adds, “She has lost a friend, as well, in Seren.”
"Fancy coming to the brewery launch?" |
To change the subject, Siôn asks if he fancies coming to the brewery launch tonight, as it sounds like a good night.
"I don't want to see anyone at the moment" |
“I don’t know – I don’t really want to see anyone at the moment,” Cai groans, but is urged to hold his head up high.
"Give the impression you've been wronged" |
In the court before the case, Malcolm Edwards is advising Eileen, “All you need to do is sit quietly, listen to the evidence and give the impression that you’ve been wronged.”
"I have been wronged!" |
“I have been wronged!” she insists, but is told that a little humility goes a long way and that getting the jury on her side from the very start is crucial. He will go to see if they are ready,
"Do what I told you and everything will be fine" |
reassuring her that she should just do what he has told her and then everything will be fine.
Dani is in her usual position |
Dani is as usual on the sofa
"I want to stay home" |
as Gwern insists that he wants to stay at home. “You can’t!” she snaps at him, but he maintains that he wants to help.
"You've been home for weeks!" |
“You’ve been at home for weeks, just lounging around. Now, go!”
He grabs what he thinks are his keys |
He picks up his bag and keys, storming out of the house, just as Britt arrives.
"Someone's looking forward to going to school" |
“Someone’s looking forward to going to school,” she remarks, “Colin doesn’t want the car this afternoon,
"I can drive us to Seren's inquest" |
“so I can drive us to Seren’s inquest.” Dani announces that she is not going, so Britt tries to change her mind.
"I was there – I know what happened" |
“I was there – I know what happened!” Dani snarls,
"We've done this before, Dani . . ." |
but Britt points out that they have done this together before. She can do this because Britt will be there with her
". . . go and have a shower!" |
and is told to go and have a shower before they leave.
Dani does not seemlikely to do so |
Dani appears to be unwilling to leave her sofa.
Kelly is in the witness box |
The scene shifts to the courtroom where Kelly is in the witness box; “Mrs Francis, let’s start with a simple question,” says Malcolm,
"Why did you steal Mrs Probert's dogs?" |
“Why did you want to steal Mrs Probert’s dogs?”
"Liberating them, actually" |
Kelly would prefer to describe it as, “Liberating them, actually, not stealing them.”
"Do you know what the word 'steal' means?" |
Malcolm continues by asking whether she knows what the word ‘steal’ means – taking without permission – and ask once again whether Kelly had Mrs Probert’s permission to take the dogs.
"No, obviously not" |
“No, obviously not,” she replies.
"Why did you want to steal them?" |
“I’ll ask the question again – why did you want to steal them?”
“Because she was cruel to them – she did not phone the vet when they were ill,” answers Kelly, but is asked if she has evidence of that.
"Howard told me" |
“Howard told me,” is her reply.
“Howard Owen, a worker who fell out with Mrs Probert around the same time,” explains Malcolm.
Kelly goes on to point out that he was not happy with the way she was treating the dogs; “She was cruel to them and he was not going to let that happen any more.”
The jury listen intently |
Eileen sits listening to this, grim-faced, as Malcolm demands whether Kelly actually saw this alleged cruelty. “Everyone knew what she was doing,” but again she is asked whether she saw it with her own eyes.
"No" |
“Answer the question – it’s a simple question,” he goes on, “Yes or no?” Kelly is forced to admit that she did not see it and looks across to Eileen
Eileen looks pleased |
who now has a look of satisfaction.
Fortunately, it is a dry night, as the celebration at the brewery is spilling over into the street outside.
"I was locked out of the house" |
Gwern arrives, still in his school uniform and gives the excuse that he was locked out of the house.
Rhys points out that they are lucky the merchandise arrived today; “You have to look tidy when the Western Post come – put something on out the back.”
The staff of Fflamingos are busy |
In its parking space outside the door, Fflamingos appears to be doing a good trade; Jason shouts, “Hurry up with those tacos, DJ – people are starting to arrive!”
Siôn and Cai arrive |
Rhys sees Siôn and Cai coming in; “Welcome to Ceffyl Du, boys!” Siôn comments that he has been busy. “If you’ve got any change, make a contribution to Dani and the family,” Rhys invites them,
Rhys mentions the donations tin . . . |
indicating a tin for donations.
. . . and Cai intends to leave . . . |
Cai decides, “I can’t do this,” but Siôn tells him that of course he can. “That’s all that people will talk about,”
. . . but is dissuaded by Siôn |
but Siôn insists that it will look even worse if he leaves straight after seeing that collecting tin.
Kath and Brynmor come in |
Brynmor and Kath arrive and are similarly welcomed; they are told to help themselves to a drink.
"Before the pigs empty the trough" |
“It’s lucky we arrived early, before the pigs empty the trough,” Kath remarks.
Rhys says that he is surprised to see them there; “What – you think we’re too old for somewhere like this?” asks Brynmor.
"Don't you think of the brewery as competition?" |
Rhys thought that the Deri would regard the brewery as competition.
Kath regrets that there is not much competition from the Deri at the moment; “But then again, it’s important to know your competition, isn’t it?”
"If you want to drink your pint in a shed" |
Brynmor comments that he has a nice little place here, and Kath scathingly replies, “If you want to drink your pint in a shed.”
"I wasn't expecting to see you here" |
Then Dyff approaches, “Kathleen and Brynley – I wasn’t expecting to see you here.” Brynmor enlightens him that it is a special day;
"Oh yes, that boy Guy Fawkes" |
“Oh yes, that boy Guy Fawkes, isn’t it?” says Dyff.
"Let's go over there, Brynmor" |
Kath indicates that she would like to move somewhere else.
Gwern tells Siôn, “I found these keys mixed up with mine,”
"They look like Iolo's keys" |
and it is suspected that they are Iolo’s keys.
Cai knows exactly what has happened |
Cai comes to a conclusion and immediately leaves the brewery.
"Yes, that's the truth" |
In the court, Howard is now being questioned by Malcolm Edwards; “In your statement you say Mrs Probert was pointing the gun straight at you,” which Howard agrees is the truth.
"How did you respond?" |
“How did you respond to this situation?”
"I tried to talk some sense into her" |
“I did what any sensible person would do – tried to talk some sense into her, but she wouldn’t listen, so Kelly and I decided to walk away,” Howard replies.
"So you had your back to Mrs Probert?" |
“So, just to make things clear, you had your back to Mrs Probert when the gun went off?” Malcolm comments.
"I wasn't walking backwards, was I?" |
Howard points out that as he was not walking backwards, that is obvious.
He adds, “And the gun didn’t go off by accident, I know that!”
"So you did not see her fire the gun" |
Malcolm insists that he wants the facts, and the fact here is that Howard did not see Mrs Probert firing the gun.
"I know that's what she did" |
“Perhaps not, but I know that is what she did, because she’d been bullying me for months!”
Eileen does not take kindly to this |
Again Malcolm reminds him that they are talking about the 29th of March, nothing else.
"She bullied other workers as well" |
Howard is now losing his temper, and goes on, “She bullied other workers as well – Colin at the shop, his wife, Britt,” and Malcolm appeals to the judge that this is not relevant.
"Can we focus on the matter in hand?" |
“I agree – can we focus on the matter in hand, Mr Owen – and stop presenting unrelated information?” the Judge declares.
"She hit her own daughter!" |
This is not going to stop Howard and his tirade continues, “I’m just saying she has history – she hit her own daughter . . .”
"What he's saying isn't true!" |
At this point, Eileen jumps up from her seat and shouts that what he is saying is not true. The Judge, who is becoming increasingly angry, calls for this to stop, but they continue to shout at each other.
"And Sioned was pregnant!" |
“And Sioned was pregnant!” asserts Howard, while Eileen points out that she was unaware of that.
"Mrs Probert, one more intervention . . ." |
The Judge has now had enough and warns, “Mrs Probert, one more intervention and you’ll be charged with contempt of court, do you understand?” She looks terrified and nods her head,
Was Howard actually planning this? |
while Howard is smirking at her.
It appears from Malcolm Edwards’ expression that all this is going very badly.
Evidently, Britt finally managed to persuade Dani to go with her,
"That was a total waste of time" |
but when they return, she moans that it was a total waste of time. She is sorry to have dragged Dani over there.
"Nobody was going to be jailed at the inquest" |
“Nobody was going to be jailed at the inquest,” Dani sighs.
“But they should have pointed the finger, because everybody knows Cai Rossiter was responsible,” insists Britt. Suddenly there is a loud banging on the door; Cai rushes in and is told that he cannot just barge in there.
"Like you did at my home last week?" |
“Like you did at my home last week?”
"What's going on, Dani?" |
Britt wonders what is going on, so he continues, “She was in my bedroom the other night while I was sleeping,
"Standing next to the bed, like a psychopath!" |
“standing next to the bed, like a psychopath! Greta saw you, didn’t she? I thought she was dreaming, but when Gwern brought me these, I knew you’d been there.
"Why were you there, Dani?" |
“So tell me, why were you there, Dani?”
"Because I wanted to kill you!" |
“Because I wanted to kill you!
"For what you did, I wanted to kill you!" |
“Yeah – for what you did, I wanted to kill you!”
"Don't say another word, Dani" |
Britt cautions her not to say another word, but is told by Cai to keep out of this.
"You need help!" |
“I understand you’re going through hell – and that’s the only reason I won’t take this further. You need help.”
"You have no idea what I need!" |
“You have no idea what I need,” she tells him.
"I won't think twice" |
He makes it very clear that if she tries this again, he will not think twice about calling the police.”
"They didn't care that you killed my daughter!" |
“And what are they going to do, Cai? They didn’t care today that you killed my daughter!”
Once again, he reminds her that it was an accident, but she shouts and screams that he should have stayed in the car, like she told him.
"If you'd stayed with your child, like any other mother . . ." |
“My daughter was in that warehouse,” he reminds her, “If you had stayed with your child, like any other mother, perhaps she’d still be alive!”
Dani lunges towards him |
She rushes towards him with hate in her eyes, but Britt manages to stop her
"Get out!" |
and orders Cai to get out.
Before going, he advises, “Accept what they said at that hearing today!”
Dani subsides into a heap |
As he closes the door, Dani, although supported by Britt, slowly sinks to the floor.
"Chillies don't agree with my stomach" |
Brynmor is concerned that Kath is not eating her food, but she says that chillies do not agree with her stomach.
"You used to bury those vindaloos!" |
Again they are joined by Dyff, who comments, “You’re going soft in your old age – you used to bury those vindaloos.”
"We buried you once, too!" |
She responds with, “We buried you once, too!”
"She still has a sharp tongue!" |
and he remarks that she has still has a sharp tongue. Brynmor suggests that they could go home,
"And let him spoil our night?" |
but she answers, “And let him spoil our night? No, I don’t think so.”
"That Malcolm made mincemeat of me, mind" |
In the brewery, discussing their appearance in court, Kelly regrets, “That Malcolm made mincemeat of me, mind.”
"He tried the same with me, but failed" |
Howard adds, “He tried the same tactics with me, but failed.” Kelly recalls that he was doing a really good job until Howard said Eileen hit Sioned. He maintains that it was a risky thing to do, but Kelly points out that everyone knows it is true.
"What do you think, Siôn?" |
Siôn is listening to this and then is asked for his verdict on the beer, which is favourable. “I’m glad to hear that from an expert,” says Rhys. Siôn is going to leave now,
"I'll have one as well" |
but Cai, who has rejoined him, will stay for a drink, explaining that it will only be one.
She is back on that sofa |
Dani is again on the sofa while
"I can't believe his cheek!" |
Britt growls, “I can’t believe his cheek – trying to throw the blame back at you when everybody knows he’s the one to blame!”
Britt investigates the noise |
Then she hears the sound of laughter outside, so goes to investigate.
Trade is good at Fflamingos |
Outside the brewery, Fflamingos appears to be doing a roaring trade.
Howard is in celebratory mood |
Howard brings DJ a bottle of beer, “For dropping Eileen in it today!” he says, “You might get to see the children more often from now on.”
Britt approaches the brewery |
Britt comes striding round the corner towards this scene of revelry;
"You should be ashamed of yourselves!" |
“You should be ashamed of yourselves, having a party when there’s a family grieving round the corner!”
She attracts a lot of attention |
Rhys appreciates that this is a difficult time for her, but then she notices Cai.
"Of course you're here, murderer!" |
“And of course you’re here, murderer! Enjoying yourself as if nothing’s happened!” Everyone is looking at her, as she rants on, “Do you know what? He was at Jinx’s house just now, threatening Dani!”
"I was not threatening anyone" |
Cai calmly replies that he was not threatening anyone.
"I know otherwise, good boy!" |
“The inquest might say you’re not to blame, good boy, but I know otherwise!” Kelly steps forward and offers to take her home, but Britt is having none of that;
"I don't need anyone to take me!" |
“I don’t need anyone to take me!”
"The Monks don't want any charity, either!" |
Then she notices the collecting tin and reads what is written on it; “And the Monks don’t want any charity either, all right?”
Then she leaves |
before marching away again.
Dyff comes over to Cai and asks if he is all right;
"Fantastic!" |
“Fantastic!” is the answer and Cai takes another swig of Ceffyl Du.
Eileen is being told off |
At Penrhewl, Malcolm Edwards is reprimanding Eileen;
"You have to control yourself better" |
“You have to control yourself better tomorrow – don’t admit to things you’ve done in the past.”
"He was trying to make me look like a terrible woman!" |
She protests that Howard was trying to make her look like a terrible woman;
"And he managed it as well!" |
“And he managed it as well – because you got angry! You exposed your temper to the whole court.”
“But the judge said he had no right to refer to irrelevant things!” she exclaims.
Malcolm asks if she really thinks the jury will forget that she hit her her own daughter; he maintains that this could change the whole case.
"I hope I'm not interrupting" |
“The prosecution will go through everything he said with a fine-tooth comb.” At this point, Siôn arrives and hopes that he is not interrupting.
Before he leaves, Malcolm tells Eileen, “We’ll meet earlier tomorrow morning to make sure you know exactly what to say.”
"How did it go?" |
Siôn thanks his friend Malcolm for everything and asks Eileen how it went today.
"Terrible!" |
She replies that it was terrible.
They have moved inside number 21 |
The participants in the brewery opening appear to have now adjourned to number 21; Howard asks if there is any more beer, but DJ considers that he has had enough already. Rhys gets him a bottle.
"You didn't think I'd forget, did you?" |
Kath is also there and Dyff brings her what appears to be a slice of pizza with a candle in it; “You didn’t think that I’d forget, did you?” he asks, “Happy birthday. I know it’s a bit pathetic,
"Like that time we went to Port Fair" |
“like that time we went to Port Fair to watch the fireworks – I bought you a stick of rock that was as hard as Spanish steel!”
She laughs at the memory |
Kath is reduced to laughter,
Brynmor comes downstairs . . . |
just as Brynmor comes downstairs and Dyff is continuing, “Do you remember me cooking for you the first time?”
. . . complaining of heartburn |
Brynmor complains that he is suffering from terrible heartburn, and observes that they should have gone home.
"Hywel Llywelyn's best whisky" |
Dyff has obviously been snooping around and asks whether anyone wants some of Hywel Llywelyn’s best whisky.
"Do you want a drop, Kath?" |
“Do you want a drop, Kath? I am celebrating, after all – you’re looking at Quantum Hydro Works’ safety officer.”
Howard congratulates him,
"Everyone needs to make a living" |
and Dyff goes on, “Before you have a go at me, everyone needs to make a living.”
Brynmor appears concerned about this, but asks, “What about the bar in Tenerife? Have you forgotten about that?”
"It's a long way from the family" |
Dyff says that there are plenty of people to run that – also it is rather a long way from the family.
“Come on, Kath, let’s go,” Brynmor tells Kath rather abruptly, but she has not finished her drink yet,
Brynmor leaves on his own |
so he leaves without her.
"Is it past his bedtime?" |
“What’s up with him – is it past his bedtime?” wonders Dyff.
"Look how much we've made today" |
DJ is looking at his phone; “Hey, look at how much money we have made today!” he exclaims, showing Jason the amount. Jason regards it as a shame they cannot spend it.
"No, we're not keeping a penny of it!" |
“Well, we could keep some of it,” suggests DJ; Jason is adamant they are not keeping a penny. He wants to be out of debt as quickly as possible,
"It goes to APD first thing tomorrow" |
so instructs DJ that money goes into the APD account first thing tomorrow.
Brynmor waits for Kath |
Brynmor is sitting with a glass of whisky when Kath returns to Cysgod y Glyn.
"I thought you would have gone back to Maes-y-Deri" |
“I wasn’t expecting you back so quickly,” he says, “I thought you would have gone back to Maes-y-Deri to reminisce about the old days.”
She demands why she would do that;
"You were delighted when he turned up" |
“You knew he was going to be there, didn’t you? You were delighted when he turned up – couldn’t take your eyes off him.”
"I've got two husbands!" |
Kath maintains that the whole thing has messed her head up; “I’ve got two husbands! When I see him, I . . . I thought he was dead, Brynmor.”
"If you had known he was still alive when . . ?" |
“If you had known he was still alive when you met me, would you have . . ?”
"Stop it, Brynmor!" |
Kath stops him there and assures him that he has nothing to worry about.
"Drink that whisky and come to bed" |
“Now drink that whisky and come to bed – you and your heartburn,” she says.
He does not look reassured |
He does not appear any less perturbed.
"What if Malcolm's right?" |
“What if Malcolm’s right and the jury take against me?” Eileen worries, “And send me to jail?”
"You won't go to jail" |
Siôn tries to sound confident that she will not go to jail. “What will Sioned do – with Huwi, the twins and Tamed?”
"That's not going to happen, Eileen" |
Again, Siôn insists, “That’s not going to happen – Eileen, tomorrow is an opportunity to show that you’re an honest, kind woman, who cares about her family.”
She wants to know what happens if she fails,
"You won't fail – trust me" |
but he tells her that she is not going to fail, “Trust me.”
The inevitable kiss |
The two of them look into each other’s eyes and the inevitable ensues – Siôn kisses her.
"I think that might complicate things" |
“I think that might complicate things between us,” she says
"Good night, Eileen" |
and Siôn considers it is wise to leave at this point, wishing her good night.
