Gaynor, asleep on the sofa

Britt comes downstairs at number 21 and when she sees Gaynor, asleep on the sofa, 

Britt yells upstairs

shouts up to Colin, at the top of her voice, “Col, do you want a bacon bap and coffee for breakfast this morning?”

The shouted reply comes back, “Lovely jubbly, love!” 

A rude awakening

and this has the intended result of giving Gaynor a rude awakening.   

"I didn't realise you were still asleep"

“Oh, Gaynor, sorry – I didn’t realise you were still asleep,” Britt says, and Gaynor seems to be getting the message that she is not exactly welcome there.

"I think this milk's off"

At Bryntirion, Diane begins to eat her cereal, and comments to Kelly, “I think this milk is off.”   

"It's actually oat milk"

She is enlightened that it is actually oat milk, and Diane cannot understand why Kelly is buying that.

Jason attempts to stop his mother’s complaints, pointing out that Kelly is trying something new on her cereal;  

"Dai used all the semi-skimmed"

“Dai used up all of the semi-skimmed on his porridge, anyway.”

“We’ll have to get more, then,” insists Diane, “I’m busy all day today and Jason is working – 

"You'll have to get some"

“so you’ll have to get some,” she instructs Kelly, who replies that she does not have time.

"Kelly has things to do, Mam"

Jason explains that Kelly has things to do today;  “Letters, phone calls, finishing the CV.”   His mother demands why she wants a CV.

"OK – cat out of the bag"

“OK – cat out of the bag,” groans Kelly, “I’ve quit my job – and I’ve got Jason’s full support, haven’t I, Jase?”

He agrees, and Diane points out that she will have to find something else, then;  

"You won't be able to afford oat milk"

“You won’t be able to afford oat milk if you don’t have a job!”

"It's nice to have a warm shower"

Gaynor comes downstairs and comments, “It’s nice to have a warm shower – it was so cold last night.”   

"I forgot to turn the heating up"

Britt apologises that she must have forgotten to turn up the heating downstairs.   “It’s all right – I borrowed one of your hoodies, Col – do you mind?”   He is glad that she was warm and comfortable.

"Sorry – only two rashers of bacon"

Britt brings in two bacon baps and is sorry that there were only two rashers of bacon left, so Gaynor will have to have a plain roll or something.   

"A coffee is fine for me"

“No problem – a coffee is fine for me,” says Gaynor.

As soon as she has gone into the kitchen, Britt scowls at Colin.

Hywel has his golf bag

Hywel is walking past Tomos ac Ellis with his golf bag when Ieuan Griffiths comes out, remarking, “So you’re going to be ‘out of the office’, are you?”

"I'm going to clear my head"

Hywel growls, “If you must know, I’m going to clear my head for a few hours,” 

"I'll tell them you're not in the mood"

and Ieuan will tell the rest of the council members that Hywel is not in the mood.   Hywel walks away in disgust.

"Well, I don't think you're in the way"

Gaynor enquires whether Britt has gone to work, and apologises for being in the way.   “You’re not in the way,” Colin begins, “Well, I don’t think you’re in the way – but . . .”   

"I'm taking advantage of your generosity"

She realises she is taking advantage of their generosity, but now she wants to go home.

"I'm afraid, Colin"

“I don’t enjoy sleeping on that sofa in your old hoodie any more than Britt enjoys having me here – but I’m afraid – 

"Not afraid of Hywel, are you?"

“not of Hywel – but he hasn’t helped.   It’s a long story, Col,” so he tells her to sit down 

"The coffee Britt has hidden from you"

and he will bring in some of the posh coffee, which Britt has hidden from her.   This makes her laugh.

Britt is on duty behind the bar in the Deri when Kelly enters;  “It’s a bit early for a vodka and soda, isn’t it?” says Britt, but Kelly is not there on a social call.   

"I'm here to ask if you're looking for staff"

“I’m here to ask if you’re looking for staff,” she says, rather embarrassed, 

"Diane has already asked"

but apparently Diane has already asked the same question, and there are no jobs available.

Diane is having a coffee

Diane is at that moment drinking a cup of coffee, presumably with proper milk.   “As I told her, I’m hoping to sell the place, so I’m not taking anyone on,” Britt continues, 

"Unless you want to buy the place"

“Unless you want to buy the place, of course.”

“No thanks – fingers burnt with the café,” is Kelly’s reply.   She is told that Cassie does not know about Britt selling the place, and Britt is not looking forward to that chat.   “Whoever ends up running this place, 

"There's a very willing barmaid at Bryntirion"

“can you tell them there’s very willing barmaid over in Bryntirion?” asks Kelly.

"You didn't come her to ask for a job for me?"

Then Kelly goes across to Diane;  “Please say you didn’t come here to ask for a job for me.”   

"Not the stuff with oat milk"

The reply is that Diane simply wanted a tidy coffee, not the stuff with oat milk.

"I don't need the help"

Kelly sits down;  “OK, I know you’re trying to help – but I don’t need the help.   So stop.”   

She hurries out of the pub

She bumps into Griffiths as she is leaving the Deri, and he can see that she is not in a good mood.

"You said you'd be here at nine"

Britt complains, “You said you’d be here at nine,” 

"It's been non-stop in the office"

and is told that it has been non-stop in the office;  he starts to take a look at the paperwork.

"How long have you been receiving these calls?"

Colin asks Gaynor, “How long have you been receiving these calls?” and is told that it has not been long;  

"We turned off the phone for a while"

they turned off the phone for a while, but that is not the answer.   He advises her to report it.

“The police say they have more important things to do,” she says, 

"Contact the phone company"

so he recommends contacting the phone company, as there must be a way to find out who they are or to block them.   

"Instead of saying I'm obsessed"

“That’s what I want – someone who takes it seriously, instead of saying that I’m obsessed,” she answers.

He realises she is talking about Hywel;  Colin adds that he is playing golf with Hywel this afternoon, 

"I'll have a chat with him"

and he will have a chat about it.   “Everything will be sorted when I’ve spoken to you both, guaranteed,” he confidently asserts.

"You'll find a job somewhere"

Anita has been looking at Kelly’s CV;  “Well, I’d give you a job,” she says, “Don’t worry – you’ll find a job somewhere.   You’re a sensible, responsible, mature woman.”

"Tell that to Diane"

“Tell that to Diane, will you?” Kelly grumbles, and Anita presumes that she has been trying to help.   

"I don't want her to think Jason married a loser!"

“I just don’t want her to think Jason has married a loser, that’s all,” 

"I can deal with Diane Ashurst"

and Anita maintains that she can deal with Diane Ashurst better than anyone.

Colin arrives to pick up Hywel 

Hywel is waiting by the alley, with his golf bag, when Colin arrives;  

"Worried about the number of bogeys you'll get?"

“Worried about the number of bogeys you’ll get, are you?” Colin laughs, as the golf clubs are loaded into the car, “I’ve booked a two-hour slot, so we need to get going.”

"I haven't been on the road much"

Hywel’s mind is elsewhere, and he explains, “I haven’t been on the road much since leaving hospital, but I want to come – it’s just been difficult since the accident. that’s all.”

"Things will get better with time" 

Colin is sure that things will get better with time;  “The accident has hit a lot of people in different ways – 

"An afternoon of golf will be great for you"

“that’s why an afternoon of golf will be great for you!   Come on, then, let’s go.”

"It's bigger than I remember"

Britt escorts Griffiths up to the Deri flat;  “It’s bigger than I remember,” he comments, 

"This sofa makes the place look tacky"

“Right, we’ll have to do something about this sofa before the photographer comes– it makes the place look tacky.”   

"I'm not rejigging the place"

Britt protests that she is not rejigging the place just to get a nice photo, but he explains, “It can add £10,000 to the price – it’s about the way you sell it.   Perhaps we could add a bit of polish to the place – a lick of paint, a new sofa.”

Then Britt finds a photograph

Britt has picked up a photo she founded lying on the floor which seems to be occupying all her attention;  “This is how Garry liked it,” she tells Griffiths, 

"Garry's not here, Britt!"

but he reminds her that Garry is not there.

"He'll lose it if we sell"

“He’ll lose it if we sell,” she goes on, and Griffiths realises that she has not told him about the sale.

"Don't say you've changed your mind"

“Britt, I’ve spent a lot of valuable time, helping with this today – don’t say you’ve changed your mind.”   She continues staring at the photo then puts it down and walks out of the room.   

Thins the photo she was looking at

We see that it is photo of herself with Garry and Brandon, taken many years ago.

"It's happening too quickly"

He follows her downstairs and will send over the photographer tomorrow;  “It can be on the market by the end of the week,” he suggests, but she protests that it is happening too quickly now.   

He reminds her that she asked him to come over.

“You have to give me tonight at least to think about it,” she insists, and he is adamant that whatever happens she will have to pay for his time today.   

"I don't work as a free consultant for anyone!"

He stresses that he does not work as a free consultant for anyone.

"The rumours are true, then?"

Siôn, who has up to now been reading the Western Post at the bar, comments, “The rumours are true, then – you are thinking of selling.”   

"It's so difficult, Siôn"

She moans that it is so difficult, and he feels the same about Y Winllan.

“But that has been closed for weeks,” she points out, 

"I'm losing so much money" 

and he explains that he is losing so much money, paying bills with nothing coming in.

“I hate thinking about selling the place – all the work I’ve put in.”   

"We should both be less sentimental"

Britt suggests that both of them need to be less sentimental about bricks and mortar.   

Siôn is about to rush outside . . .

He gets up and walks out.

. . . where Griffiths is having a chat

Outside Tomos ac Ellis, Griffiths is talking to a stranger;  “I’ll let you know when it’s available,” he says.   

Here comes Siôn 

Siôn walks straight across to him 

"I've just been talking to Britt"

and remarks that he has just been talking to Britt.   “Are you making an offer for the Deri?” Griffiths asks hopefully.

“No – I want to sell Y Winllan!” Siôn announces, 

"You're going trust me to sell it?"

and Griffiths sarcastically wonders if he is going to be trusted to sell the bookshop.   

"I know we haven't always seen eye-to-eye"

“Look, I know we haven’t always seen eye-to-eye, but I’d rather someone local sold the place – someone who cares about the High Street,” Siôn goes on.

"Come over tomorrow

“I’m very busy, you know – I don’t think I have time to take more on,” Griffiths prevaricates, “Come over tomorrow – I’m sure I can fit you in.”

"I'm just trying to help"

Diane explains to Anita that she is just trying to help;  

"You know what Kelly is like"

“I know that,” Anita understands, “But you know what Kelly is like – she likes to do everything herself.   

"Just a little bit of  subtlety"

“I’m not telling you not to help, just a little bit of subtlety.”

"'I'm moving as fast as I can"

Griffiths comes in through the back door and is reprimanded that he should have picked up Anita half an hour ago.   He protests that he is moving as fast as he can and still has a lot of work to do.

"We're supposed to have a night out"

“We’re supposed to have a night out tonight,” she insists, and he says that they can still do that, 

"I shall have to keep working"

but he will have to keep working.   

He maintains that he has never been busier, with everyone wanting to sell.  

"I'm not an Octopus"

“I’ve only got two hands – I’m not an octopus!”   

"You could use some help"

Diane takes this opportunity to suggest that he could use some help, 

"Yes, I may have to take someone on"

and he accepts that he may have to take someone on.   

"Where will you find someone?"

“But where will you find someone?” she asks, and looks at Anita, who smiles, as she leaves for their ‘night out’.

Hywel comes home

When Hywel returns to Llwyncelyn he finds that Gaynor is back;  “Are you home, then?” he asks, and she agrees that she is.

“I realised how silly it is to sleep on Colin’s and Britt’s sofa – 

"I thought we could have dinner and talk"

“I thought we could have dinner and talk.”   However Hywel says he is just dropping off his golf clubs, 

"I promised to meet Colin in the Deri"

and has promised to meet Colin in the Deri.   He will be back later, and assures her that it is nice to have her back.

"I've been waiting for ages"

Hywel hastens to the Deri, where Colin says that he has been waiting for ages;  

"Not as long as I waited for you"

“Not as long as I waited for you to get out of that bunker!” Hywel responds, “Thanks for that, Col – I needed it.”

"A bit of fresh air and good company"

“I told you, didn’t I?   A bit of fresh air and good company.   How are you feeling about everything now?”   Hywel is fine if he does not think about things, but that accident is a lot to process.   Then Colin asks how things are with Gaynor;  “Did you know she was sleeping on our sofa?”

"She told me when I took the clubs back"

“Yes, she told me – she was at the house when I took my golf clubs back,” he replies, 

"And you left again to come here?"

and Colin is surprised that he left the house to come there.

"She wanted to talk and support you . . ."

“If she was at home, she wanted to talk and support you – 

". . . she won't be happy" 

she won’t be happy that you walked straight out again.”

"It's not fair you have to work in the evening"

At a nearby table, Anita is moaning, “It’s not fair that you have to work in the evening like this.   This was supposed to be a night out for us.”   

"I'm just finishing this, Anita"

He answers that he is just finishing this, and cannot help how much he has on at the moment.

"I don't have time to write an advert"

“You need someone to help you, then,” she suggests, and he snarls that he does not have time to write an advert.   

"Lucky I have someone mind, then"

“It’s lucky that I have someone in mind, then,” she continues.   

"Not a good idea for us to work together"

He imagines that she means herself, and does not consider it a good idea for them to work together.

"No, not me – Kelly!"

“No, not me – Kelly!”   

He angrily demands what Kelly knows about houses, and is told that she lives in one.

"There's a lot more to it than that"

“There’s a lot more to it than that!” he growls, but she points out that he does not need an expert, just someone to help him.   She predicts that it would do the business the world of good to have someone young and enthusiastic on the team.

"Please, Ieuan– for me?"

“Please, Ieuan – for me?” she wheedles.

"We don't need poppadoms and naan bread"

Kelly comes into APD, and Jason immediately demands, “Did you get poppadoms?”   She points out that they do not need poppadoms and naan bread, and then Diane arrives.

"Kelly, you've been offered a job"

“Hey, Kelly – you’ve just been offered a job,” she says, 

"Mam, you're interfering again!"

and Jason complains about his mother interfering again.   

"No – Anita organised it"

“Not me – Anita organised it, not me!”

"Why are people nosing in my business?"

“Why are people nosing in my business?   I don’t need help!” Kelly squeals,  

"I'll tell her you're not interested"

so Diane will tell her that Kelly is not interested.   

"What is the job?"

Of course, Kelly is inquisitive as to what the job is, 

"With Tomos ac Ellis "

and is informed that it is with Tomos ac Ellis.

"With Griffiths – no way!"

“With Griffiths?” is Kelly’s disparaging comment, and she begins to laugh, “No way!”   She is reminded that it is local job and it pays well – she can start straightaway.

"You heard her, Mam – no way!"

Jason instructs his mother to stop, “You heard her – no way – isn’t it Kelly?   Right I have to go to the shop to get poppadoms – I’ll be back to lock up.”

"I don't want to interfere, Kelly"

Diane is sorry if she has been too pushy today;  “I don’t want to interfere, and neither does Anita.   

"You might enjoy it . . ."

“I can’t force you to do anything, but at least think about the offer.   You never know – you might enjoy it – 

". . . like 'Selling Sunset' but in Cwmderi"

“like ‘Selling Sunset’ [American TV series about Estate Agents in Los Angeles] – but in Cwmderi.”

"Someone's glad to have her home back . . ."

When Colin gets back to number 21, Britt is stretched out on the sofa;  “Here she is – and look at that smile!” he laughs, “I think someone’s glad to have her home back – 

". . . minus one lodger

“minus one lodger.”

"I couldn't have coped with her for another night"

Britt is very glad that Colin has spoken to Gaynor;  “I couldn’t have coped with her for another night!”   Colin doubts that her tactics were working, 

"Nor could I after spending the day with both of them"

and does not think that he could had coped after spending the day with both of them.

"Yes, I've decided to sell"

“At least, you didn’t have to spend time with Griffiths – it was emotional, but yes, I’ve decided to sell,” she tells him.   

"I wouldn't like to be there when you tell Garry!"

Colin would not like to be there when she tells Garry, but she informs him that Garry phoned earlier and has been told everything;  

"He hasn't got much choice, has he?"

“He understood, he didn’t argue – he hasn’t got much choice, has he?”

There is a knock at the door

At Llwyncelyn, as usual with a glass of wine at hand, Gaylor is surprised when there is a knock at the door.   

"Can I help you?"

A stranger is standing outside and asks, “Gaynor Llywelyn?   I’ve got bad news about your mother.”

The stranger comes in

Gaynor invites her in and she looks around the room;  “About my biological mother?” she is asked.

“She’s died – she’d been ill for some time,” the stranger goes on, 

"You must be her nurse"

and Gaynor assumes that she is her mother’s nurse.   

“No – I nursed Mam through everything – 

"I'm Cheryl, your sister"

“I’m Cheryl – your sister.”   

Gsynor is speechless

Gaynor is dumbfounded.
