"We're dying of thirst!"

In the morning, when Cassie approaches the Deri to open up, Kath and Diane are already waiting outside;  “Where have you been?” Kath demands, “We’re dying of thirst.”

"It's only 8:30"

Cassie points out to them that it is only 8:30,

"Kath has got some big news"

and Diane announces that Kath has some big news that she wants to share with them,

They go into the Deri

but she insists that they have a cuppa first.

Ffion has lost her keys

At Cysgod y Glyn, Arwen seems to have her appetite back, and her mother is fussing, “Where are they?   I was meant to be there in ten minutes.”

All she can find is a chocolate wrapper

She feels down the back of the sofa for her keys, but only finds a chocolate wrapper.   “Are you sure you haven’t seen them?”

"Come on the school bus with me"

Arwen’s answer is, “Come on the school bus with me,” but she is told to not to be silly.   Then Ffion sits down beside her daughter, asking what she has in her hand;

"No, the other hand"

she displays the spoon, but her mother means the other hand,

"I'm just worried . . ."

which inevitably contains the missing keys.

“I’m just worried,” she begins, but Ffion reminds her that she hid them behind the fruit bowl yesterday – and Jinx got the blame.

"I don't have time for this nonsense"

“I don’t have time for this nonsense – I’m late as it is –

"Don't you dare pull another sickie today!"

“and don’t you dare pull another sickie today!

"I mean it, Arwen!"

“I mean it!”   She hurries from the flat.

Cassie brings in two cups and asks, “Are you are going to tell me what this big secret is, or do I have to guess?”

"Do you enjoy working here, Cassie?"

“Do you enjoy working here, Cassie?” enquires Kath,

"Of course I do"

and when Cassie replies that she does, continues, “Well, that’s settled then.   What would you say if I told you your job is safe?”

"You haven't, have you?"

Diane realises where this is heading;  “You haven’t, have you?   You’ve bought the Deri?”

"You could be looking at the new landlady of the Deri Arms"

Kath replies that it is not done yet, “But, if things go well, perhaps you could be looking at the new landlady of the Deri Arms – and I’d like you to be the manager, Cassie.   What do you say?”

This is a surprise to Cassie

Cassie is rather taken aback by this

"Some brandy in our coffee"

and Diane wants to add some brandy to their coffees as they have some celebrating to do.   She can see that Cassie is in shock.

Kelly issues instructions

At Bryntirion, Kelly is preparing to leave for work and is saying goodbye to Ifan;  she instructs Dai, “OK, snacks in the fridge.   Please don’t give him more than one of those yoghurt things, or he’ll have a massive sugar rush and turn into a real gremlin.”

"I have babysat before, you know"

He reassures her that he has babysat before, and in any case Diane will be back soon.   As she is about to go out of the door,

"He fancies making a red velvet cake"

Kelly adds, “He fancies making a cake – red velvet is his favourite – ta-ra!”

"Do you want to watch cartoons with Tad-cu?"

“Red velvet!” Dai grumbles, “Right, Ifan, do you want to watch cartoons with Tad-cu?   Mam-gu will be back soon.”   Just then there is the sound of a loud crash,

Then there is a loud, ominous noise"

which causes him some consternation, and when he goes into the kitchen, he exclaims, “Crikey Moses!”

"It's just like riding a bike"

In the Deri, Kath is practising pulling a pint, and comments that it is like riding a bike.

"You could put on events here"

Diane muses, “You could put on events here again – bingo, perhaps and whist, karaoke – breathe some life into this place – blow the cobwebs away.”

Cassie says nothing

Cassie is making no comment, but simply listens to the conversation.

"We haven't had a karaoke night since we ran the place"

“We haven’t had a karaoke night here since Dyff and I ran the place,” remarks Kath.

"Wouldn't it reopen old wounds?"

Cassie wonders whether it would open old wounds if she bought the place;  “When Dyff was working here, he had the affair with Jean,”

She draws their attention to the picture

and she points to the picture on the wall.”

"That's going back years now"

Kath says that is going back years now, and Cassie also remembers that she wrecked the bar.   “And you wrote something obscene on the wall outside.”

"I didn't know about that"

Diane has not heard about this and is interested in what the word actually was;  “It was a terrible time – I don’t know how she lived and worked here,” Cassie recalls, “Do you really want to be reminded of that affair every day?   I wouldn’t – would you, Diane?”

"What word was that, then?"

Diane is still inquisitive, so it is revealed that the word started with an ’S’.   Diane is outraged by this.

Ffion is on her office

In her office at school, Ffion is preparing for the day’s work when there is a knock at the door and Cai, her deputy, comes in.   He asks if everything is all right with Arwen.

"Arwen was acting a bit odd this morning"

“She was acting a bit odd in the lesson this morning, not herself.”

"She's worried about the exams"

Ffion is confident that she is worried about her exams and that she will be fine.   “Are you settling in,” he asks, “It was an honour to cover for you –

"I'm very glad you're back"

“but I’m very glad you’re back.”

“I know there’s history between us, Cai, but it’s water under the bridge –

"Please keep your feelings to yourself"

“so if you have any feelings, please keep them to yourself,” she instructs him, “And Arwen is none of your business!”

"I was referring to work pressures"

He believes that she has misunderstood him, as he was referring to work pressures;  “I can’t tell you how glad I am that I don’t have to go the governors’ meeting tonight –

"I'd rather rot in a gutter!"

“I’d rather rot in a gutter!”

"It's not a job that suits everyone"

Ffion appreciates that it is not a job that suits everyone,

"I'm confident I did a good job"

but he is confident that he did a good job while she was away.

"You didn't do a good Joh of keeping my begonia alive"

She snidely remarks that he did not do a good job of keeping her begonia alive;

"I wonder what else has been neglected"

“I wonder what else has been neglected round here.”   He queries whether she is ready to come back, as she seems rather on edge, something which she denies.

He reminds her that he is always there if she needs to talk and leaves the office.

Ffion bins the begonia

She throws her dead begonia and its pot into the bin.

The OCD is getting worse again

At Y Felin, Siôn is texting on his phone and Iolo is sitting by the table, where several jars of tablets are displayed.   He appears to be looking at the instructions for using Calpol.

"Can you look after Great for a while?"

“Dad, can you look after Greta for me for a while?” he asks, “I won’t be long.”   He seems to be a hurry to get somewhere,

Siôn is concerned

and his father is concerned.

Maya admires her new sign

Maya is looking at the new sign on her shop when Kath and Diane come out of the Deri;

It seems that Kath is having second thoughts

Kath appears to be having second thoughts, prompted by what Cassie said.

"Welcome to Cwmderi"

They notice the pharmacy proprietor admiring her shop, and Kath welcomes her to Cwmderi.

"It's been a lifelong dream

“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to open a pharmacy – and it’s been overwhelming, actually.”

"John White would have something to say"

Kath imagines that John White would have something to say about the signage;

"If you could have a little bit more Welsh"

“It’s lovely, but perhaps if you could have a little bit more Welsh on the sign there.

"Some people are funny about Welsh . . ."

“Some people round here, they’re a bit funny about Welsh –

". . . not us, but some people"

“not us, but other people – you know what I mean?”

"Yes, you may be right"

Maya realises that Kath may have a point there.

Diane realises that it is her phone that is ringing

Diane discovers that her phone is ringing, just as Iolo appears in a frantic state;

"I think I've given my daughter an overdose"

“Please help – I think I’ve given my daughter an overdose,”

"Come in here"

and he is taken into the pharmacy.

Dai is cleaning up the mess

Dai is sweeping up the scattered remains of a box of Oatsters and several other food items on the floor of Bryntirion, and is pleased to hear the front door open and Diane come in;

"Where on earth have you been?"

“Where on earth have you been?  You said half an hour!   I’ve been phoning and phoning!”

Diane simply kisses him,

"Don't say that Glenys Pop is back on the scene!"

and he detects that she has been drinking;  “Don’t say that Glenys Pop is back on the scene!”

"Right, I'll have a nap, then"

Diane wonders where Ifan is, and is told that he is asleep, so she will take advantage of that to have a nap.

"No way, José!"

“No way, José!   I’ve been going all morning – Ifan made a huge mess in the kitchen!

"Come on – Marigolds on!"

Come on, Marigolds on, chop-chop!”

"What have I done to deserve this?"

As Diane would rather doze off on the sofa, he moans, “What have I done to deserve this?

"I should be in Australia!"

“I should be in Australia!   I’m too old for this, Diane.”

"You're a spring chicken"

She describes him as a ‘spring chicken’ and he sits down beside her,

"Castrated cockerel, more like!"

muttering, “Spring chicken?   Castrated cockerel, more like!”

"Do you have a minute, Kelly?"

Kelly comes out of Tomos ac Ellis in the rain, and Cassie asks if she has a minute;

"I want to ask you about something"

“I want to ask you about something – you know the sealed bids for the Deri?”   Kelly assumes that she is toying with the idea,

"Come over to the office later"

and tells her to come over to the office later, when she will ask Ieuan to explain everything.

"Keep it under your hat, will, you?"

“Kelly – keep it under your hat, will you?” Cassie asks her, and then Jinx approaches

"That sounded like a juicy conversation"

and remarks that it sounded to him like a juicy conversation.

"Don't go there – my lips are sealed"

“OK, Jinx, don’t go there, right?   My lips are sealed,” she replies,

"You've never been able to keep a secret"

but he reminds her that she has never been able to keep a secret for more than two minutes.   “You know what – I’m a changed woman, OK?   Respectable, pillar of the community and all that,” she insists.

Her resolve is weakening already

However, it appears that she is about to divulge some information.

"I asked from advice about Greta . . ."

Iolo is at home, looking very worried, and complains to his father, “It’s completely unprofessional – I went in there to ask for advice on Greta

". . . and I got this spiel about anxiety"

“and instead I got this spiel about anxiety being a big problem these days.”

"So you hadn't given her too much medicine?"

Siôn gathers that he had not given Greta too much medicine;  “No, not according to her – but I don't trust her.

"She made it sound like I'm a 'helicopter parent'"

“She made it sound like I’m a ‘helicopter parent’ – that I’m being dramatic!”

"She might have a point there"

is father suggests that she might have a point as Greta is fine,

"We always hearing about children collapsing"

but Iolo goes on, “We always hear about children falling and hitting their head – collapsing with a brain haemorrhage days later!   I’m going to check on her.”

"What do you want to talk about?"

Cai comes into the house and Siôn asks if he got the message;  “Have you got time for a chat?”   Cai enquires what he wants to talk about.

"What you said about Lynwen"

“What you said yesterday about Lynwen – how did you know?”

"You broke Gwen's heart"

“You broke Gwen’s heart,” he is told, but maintains that he was so ashamed of what he had done;  that is why he cut all contact and moved to Cwmderi.

“And did you cut all contact?” asks Cai.

"Of course – I gave my word"

Siôn claims that he did, because he gave his word, but Cai does not think that is worth a lot, after he had been lying for three years.

“Two and a half,” Siôn corrects him;  “Why are you bringing this up now?”

"Gwen was never the same again . . ."

Cai insists that Gwen was never the same again;

". . . having sex with her best friend over the baby grand!"

he does not notice that Iolo is coming back downstairs as he continues, “Mind you, I don’t know how I’d react if I came home to find my partner having sex with my best friend over the baby grand!”

"Miss Jenkins, piano?"

Siôn suddenly becomes aware of Iolo’s presence;  he says, disbelievingly, “Miss Jenkins, piano?”

Iolo is deeply shocked

and sits down on the stairs in a state of shock.   Cai thinks it wise to make himself scarce.

The pharmacy is closed . . .

Inside the pharmacy, with ‘Daphne’ conspicuously on display, the sign on the door is turned to ‘Closed’ as Maya advises someone on the phone, “All closed up, then.”

. . . but Kath wants a hangover cure

Kath comes in, wanting something for a splitting headache;

"Nothing worse than an afternoon hangover"

“There’s nothing worse than an afternoon hangover,” she moans.   She is told to take two tablets now with plenty of water, some vitamin C and get some rest;  she should try to get some sleep if she can.

"A sneaky G&T is a great medicine"

“I’ve always found a sneaky G&T is a great medicine – ‘hair of the dog’ is a great cure,” is the pharmacist’s advice, “But don’t tell anyone I told you that – or I will be in trouble.   Good news about the pub, then?

"I hear that Jessie woman is putting in an offer"

“I hear that Jessie woman is putting in an offer.   I’m so glad it’s staying in the hands of locals.”

"I'm not Jessie, I'm Kathleen Jones"

Kath points out that she is not Jessie, she is Kathleen Jones.

"No – the woman with the red hair"

“No, I meant the woman with the red hair – the one running the place – that’s what I heard, anyway.   Colin heard it from Jinx, who heard it from Kelly – I think.”

"The sly little slut"

Kath’s attitude changes;  “Well the sly little slut!” she snarls,

"Have I put my foot in it?"

and Maya fears that she may have put her foot in it.   “I’ll put my foot in something now!” Kath promises and she hurriedly leaves the shop.

Dai and Diane are both asleep

Both Dai and Diane are asleep on the sofa when Kelly returns home and slams the door in order to waken them.

"Where's Ifan?"

“Where’s Ifan?” she shouts, and is told that he is having an nap upstairs.

"For crying out loud, Dai!"

“He’s not supposed to have naps – he’s five – he won’t sleep tonight.   For crying out loud – one job, Dai, one job!”

"I've had an SOS, Dai!"

Meanwhile, Diane is speaking on the phone, and has been summoned to go to the Deri immediately;  “You’re not going to leave me here with ‘Cruella de Vil’, are you?”

"Why isn't she answering?"

Jinx has brought home a pizza and is sharing it with Arwen, who is unable to contact her mother.   “Why isn’t she answering?   Should we phone someone?” but he is confident that Ffion will soon be home.

"Have you told her about this time of the month business?"

“Why are you desperate for her to come home, all of a sudden?” he asks, “Have you told her yet?   You know, about this time of the month business?”

Ffion receives a totally unexpected cwtch

As soon as she walks in, Ffion is surprised to be given a hug by her daughter, and wonders of she is all right.

"You two need to talk"

Jinx vacates the flat, explaining that they need to have a talk.

"What's wrong?"

“What’s wrong?   What have you done?   Why do we need to talk?” demands Ffion.

"I've started my period"

Arwen simply answers that she has started her period, yesterday, but Dani helped her.

"Dani?   Why didn't you tell me?"

“Dani?   Why didn’t you tell me?” Ffion continues,

"I did try"

but Arwen says she tried.

"I'm so sorry, Arwen"

Ffion is very sorry and embraces her daughter.

"We'll have vodkas, Cassie . . ."

In the Deri, Kath explains that they have returned for a ‘hair of the dog’.   “We’ll have a vodka each, Cassie –

". . . make them large ones, as Jean used to say"

“and make them large ones, as Jean McGurk would say.   Speaking of Jean McGurk and the affair with Dyff – thanks for reminding me –

"I've been thinking about what you said"

I’ve been thinking about what you said.   I think I’ll be all right, you know, because we had many happy years here after buying the place.

"What do you think, Diane?"

“To be honest, I think I’ll put a picture of Dyff over there, once I’ve bought the place, because Jean McGurk has been up there far too long – what do you think, Diane?”

"Thanks for your concern, Cassie"

“But thanks for your concern, Cassie, it means a lot.”   Diane points out that is what friends are for.

"I didn't want you to jump in at the deep end"

Cassie maintains that she did not want Kath to jump in at the deep end, and that running a pub like this is hard work.   They are not getting any younger.

"How much were you going to offer for the place?"

“That reminds me, how much were you going to offer for this place?” Cassie casually asks, and Kath considers that a strange thing to ask;  she cannot imagine why Cassie would want to know that.

"You wanted to put me off buying the place!"

“And I thought you were simply worried about me – but no – you wanted to put me off buying the place, didn’t you, Cassie?   So that you can get your dirty, pink nail-varnished fingers on it!   What sort of friend would do that?”

She launches her large vodka . . .

She vindictively empties her large vodka over Cassie and encourages Diane to do the same;

. . . at Cassie

as Diane seems reluctant Kath does it herself, and Cassie is outraged.

"Once my name is above that door!"

“Do you know what?   I’ll be putting those vodkas, and the dry cleaning of that blouse on your slate – once my name is above that door!

Cassie's fury is palpable

“And if you think for a second you’re keeping your job after what you’ve done,

"You're making a big mistake, good girl!"

“you’re making a big mistake, good girl!”

She marches out of the Deri, followed by Diane,

Cassie is completely livid

and Cassie is left dripping wet and apoplectic with rage.
