Breakfast time at Deri Fawr 

Sioned and DJ are having breakfast at Deri Fawr, 

"Is this cheap bacon?"

and she complains, “Is this cheap bacon?   It tastes a bit odd,” she says.

DJ groans, “Don’t you start – I can’t afford another bad review of my cooking!”   

"It's not as nice as bacon from a butcher"

She explains that it is not his cooking, but that bacon from a shop is not as nice as bacon from a butcher.   

He sadly shakes his head, “We can’t afford it, can we?   

"Are the beans all right?   Is the egg all right?"

“Are the beans all right?   Is the egg all right?   Or do they taste cheap as well?   Sorry, I don’t want to be nasty, but you’re used to the best – and now we have to watch the pennies.”   

"I'll go and get more coffee"

Sioned will go and get more coffee.

Rhys is publicising his stolen bike

Rhys is going round the village, putting up flyers asking for information about the stolen bike;  

"I don't think 10% is too much to ask"

he is also on the phone to Griffiths.   “Well, I don’t think a 10% increase is too much to ask,” he says, but evidently his employer does not agree.

“I’ll let you think about it, but I want an answer today,” he goes on.   

"It's not nice to think someone's a thief"

Then he sees Garry and asks him to put one of the flyers in his window.   “It’s about the bike – I’m gutted – it’s not nice to think that someone is a thief!”

Garry remarks that it looks expensive, 

"Someone is bound to have heard something"

but Rhys continues, “You know what people are like round here – someone’s bound to have heard or seen something.   Give me a shout if you hear anything.”   

Garry knows more than he is saying

Garry goes into MFC.

"Where have you been?"

At Cysgod y Glyn, Ffion is eating toast when Cai comes in, carrying two coffees;  “Where have you been?” she asks, and he replies that he has been to the sea for a dip.   “At this hour?” she demands.

"The tide was ideal"

“Yes, a group of us went – we checked the tide last night and it was ideal,” he says, handing her a coffee.   She wonders what time he got up 

"You should try it"

and he answers, “4:30am – you should try it.   It’s good for the mind.”

"Or you could sleep for eight hours"

Ffion prefers to sleep for eight hours, but he insists that the sleep he gets these days is quality sleep;  

"Not just passing out after eight pints"

“Not just passing out after eight pints.”

"Why don't we do something nice tonight?"

She suggests that they should do something nice tonight;  “Go out for food?”   He maintains that he was planning to go out on his bike and has decided to avoid places that are going to tempt him to drink.   

"So we're never going out for food again?"

“So we’re never going to go out for food or to a pub ever again?” she enquires.

“Of course we are – but it’s still early days for me.   

"You had to stop drinking or you would have died"

“It was different for you – you had to stop drinking or you would have died.   I’m in a different place.”   

Ffion does not appreciate that

She does not look happy that he said this.

"Are you all right?"

Tesni appears to be suffering another bout of colitis and is curling up on the sofa when Gwyneth comes in;  “Are you all right?” she asks, 

"I've told you you're overdoing it"

“I’ve told you that you’re overdoing it.”   Tesni maintains that she has only been having some fun.   Gwyneth understands that, but insists, “You have to look after yourself – you don’t look OK to me.   Did you drink last night?”

"I only had one or two ciders"

Tesni says that she only had one or two ciders, and is told that is the worst thing she could drink;  

"I don't think you're getting enough rest"

“And you were home late, too – I don’t think you’re getting enough rest.”

"I might as well go up to bed"

Tesni thinks that she might as well go up to bed now, and Gwyneth wants to phone the doctor, but is forbidden from doing that;  

"I'm OK!"

“I’m OK!” growls Tesni, and Gwyneth will make her a cup of tea instead.

"That sounds amazing"

At Deri Fawr, Sioned is on the phone to one of her friends;  “That sounds amazing,” she says, “Enjoy yourself and take plenty of photos.”   DJ comes in and she tells him, “A couple of the girls are going for a spa day.”

"I'm surprised you didn't fancy that"

He is surprised that she did not fancy that, and she replies, “Bottomless brunch and sitting in a Jacuzzi all day?   

"Of course I did – but we can't afford it"

Of course I did – but we can’t afford it.”   When he suggests that they could have sorted something, she goes on, 

"I'm not having you working all hours"

“Listen, I’m not having you working all hours so I can have a massage.

"I've found someone else to give us a quote"

“Anyway, I want you to come to the village with me – I’ve found someone new to give us a quote for fixing the machine.   This bloke said that it’s odd the machine has a problem already.   

"We don't have to pay, do we?"

“We don’t have to pay him – it’s just a quote.   

"We could have a takeaway"

“But I was thinking if we get some good news, just as a little treat tonight, we could have a takeaway.”

"Not MFC!"

DJ agrees, but stipulates, “Not MFC!”

Tesni is soup-making

Tesni is making some soup, using chicken Oxo cubes;  “Cheese and broccoli – it’s Mam’s recipé.”   

"You're not supposed to eat broccoli"

Gwyneth points out that she is not supposed to eat broccoli;  she has been reading up, and it is not something that a sufferer from colitis should eat.   

"I've never had a reaction"

“I’ve never had a reaction,” Tesni comments.

“You’re not the best at keeping a record of what you eat,” Gwyneth scolds her, but is told that this recipé has made her feel better ever since she was a little girl, 

"It males me feel closer to Mam"

and in any case, it makes her feel closer to her mother.   

"I know you don't like me interfering"

“Just make sure you don’t eat bread with it, then,” she is warned, “I know you don’t like me interfering, but I’m only trying to help.”

Tesni appreciates that, “But listening to you comment on everything I do is making my hangover worse!”   Gwyneth thought that she has only had one or two, and repeats that she is worried.   

"It's annoying!"

“Yes, I know – and it’s annoying!”

"Red cigarette papers, please, Col"

Mark appears to be slightly more mobile after his self-administered ‘treatment’ and walks into the shop, asking Colin for a packet of those red cigarette papers.   He explains that he and Tyler are going to play that game tonight, where you stick famous names to your forehead.   

"I love that game"

That appears to be a favourite game of Colin.

"Garry's asked me to do a shift in MFC"

“Look, I wanted a quick chat with you about MFC – Garry said you’ve resigned.   Right, well, he’s asked me to do a few shifts in your place – do you mind?”   

"You'll go home stinking of grease"

Mark has no objection, but informs Colin that he will go home stinking of grease.   

"I've got used to that over the years"

“I’ve got used to that over the years,” says Colin.

"Rhys is very upset about that bike"

Seeing Rhys’ flyer on the counter, Mark mentions it and Colin says that Rhys is very upset about the bike.

Tyler is preparing to sell the bike . . .

At that very moment, Tyler is taking photos of the bike in question, but when he hears the front door, 

. . . bur has to quickly hide it

he hurriedly puts the machine into the back garden.   

Mark shows him the flyer

Mark comes in with one of the flyers, and Tyler expresses surprise and that anyone would steal it.

He gets out his medicinal cannabis

Then Mark gets out his cannabis stash and prepares himself a smoke;  

"Since when do you smoke weed?"

“Since when do you smoke weed?” Tyler asks, and is told that it is purely medicinal.

“I’ve been in so much pain lately, and this is the only thing that works,” Mark replies;  he is instructed not to smoke it in the house, 

"I'll go out in the garden, then"

so Mark will go out into the garden.   

"No – the washing's on the line"

This leaves Tyler in somewhat of a quandary and he says that he has washing on the line out there.

“No, I brought it in this morning,” Mark insists, so Tyler proposes that they have a cup of tea first;  

Mark goes outside

however he cannot stop Mark from going outside, where, of course, he discovers the stolen bike.

"What's Rhys Llywelyn's bike doing here?"

“What the hell?” he shouts, “Are you going to tell me what Rhys Llywelyn’s bike is doing here?   Did you steal it?”   Tyler denies that, 

"You promised me this stealing was over"

and Mark snarls, “You promised me that this stealing nonsense was over, Tyler!   I’m not stupid!”

"I'm looking after it for a friend"

He is told the unlikely story that it is a friend’s bike and Tyler is merely looking after it, so Mark demands who this friend is.   

"After everything I've done for you!"

“Right, I’ll phone Rhys now, and he can come to see whether it’s his,” Mark proposes, “After everything I’ve done for you – I didn’t say a word last time!   

"I'm phoning the police"

“I’m not covering for you this time – I’m phoning the police.”

"I'll tell them you're smoking weed!"

Tyler threatens that he will tell them Mark is smoking weed;  “A postman would lose his job if he was caught taking drugs – so keep your mouth shut, will you?   And I’ll do the same.   

"Go and smoke your medicine . . ."

“Just relax and go and smoke your medicine – the bike will be gone tomorrow, 

". . . then we can forget about the whole thing"

“and then we can forget about the whole thing – all right?”

Britt gives a letter to Eileen 

Britt comes into Penrhewl and hands a letter to Eileen, which she finds is notification that there is fancy dress at the school on Thursday;  

"They haven't given us much warning"

“They haven’t given us much warning, have they?” she moans.   Britt is sure that they can manage to throw something together for him.

"He can wear his karate suit"

Eileen has plenty of flat caps, so he can go as a farmer;  “Or he can wear his karate suit.”   Britt wonders if she is going to ask Huwi what he wants to dress as, 

"Who knows what he would like to be?"

and is told, “No – you know what kids that age are like – who knows what he would like to be?”   

Eileen is worried

She is definitely looking worried.

"I told you, didn't I?"

After the visit of the repair man, DJ remarks, “I told you, didn’t I?   He wants more money to fix it now – 

"You've wasted his time and ours"

“you’ve wasted his time and ours!”   

"I was only trying to help"

Sioned insists that she was trying to help, but he replies that it would help if she considered closing the place.

"After everything I've put into this place?"

“After everything I’ve put into this place?” she shouts, 

"This is the only thing I have left!"

and he points out that at least they would not be paying rent.   “This is the only thing I have left!” she rants, “I’ve lost everything – my baby – my money – my home!”

He reminds her that they have not lost Deri Fawr, 

"Penrhewl!"

but she exclaims, “Penrhewl!   You’re not sorting this – you work in a fried chicken shop, making pennies!   Do you think that will sort out our problems?   We’re in a hole and I can’t see a way out!”   

He wallops the vending machine

She storms out, leaving DJ so frustrated that he punches the vending machine.

Huwi is home

Britt is icing cakes when Huwi-John comes in and helps himself to a drink from the fridge;  “I’ve heard that you’ve got a fancy dress day at school on Thursday,” she says, 

"Are you looking forward to it?"

“Are you looking forward to it?”   

He does not want what his mother suggests . . .

He says that he is, but does not want to dress up as a farmer or Karate kid.

“If you could wear any fancy dress costume in the world, what would you choose?   Whisper it to me,” she goes on, 

. . . and he tells Auntie Britt what he fancies

and he does so.   She considers that he would look very special in that;  

"Do you want me to try and get one?"

“Do you want me to try and get one for you?”   

Off he goes with his drink and cake

He is very enthusiastic about this idea, and Britt will see what she can do.

Rhys has a phone call

At number 9, Rhys asks Tesni how she is feeling now, and then he receives a phone call;  

"Don't you think I deserve it?"

“Don’t you think I deserve it after all the hard work?” he demands, “I see.”

"Griffiths won't give me a pay rise . . ."

He tells Tesni that Griffiths has refused to give him a pay rise;  she knows how stingy he can be, but Rhys predicts that he might regret it, “Because he’s not the only one who wants my expertise.   

". . .  but a company from Cardiff have contacted me"

“A company from Cardiff have contacted me.”

"What?   You've been headhunted?"

“What?   You’ve been headhunted?” Tesni gasps, 

"Don't sound so shocked"

and he tells her not to sound so shocked.   “That’s amazing – you should definitely take the job.   

"Cardiff – or Cwmderi and Ieuan Griffiths ?"

“Cardiff – or Cwmderi and Ieuan Griffiths?   I could come with you – a new start in a new place – as a couple.   

"We could have a house and a dog"

“We could have a house and a dog – good practice before having the kids.”

He is becoming rather doubtful at this stage, but she giggles that she is only joking.   “I would like to come,” she assures him, 

"Gwyneth is really annoying . . ."

“I’ve had enough of this place.   I know Gwyneth is only trying to be supportive – but she’s really annoying!   

". . . checking when I go to bed"

“She is always checking what I eat and drink, when I go to bed . . .”

"And who you go to bed with!"

“Who you go to bed with!” suggests Rhys, 

"We've had a lot of fun, haven't we?"

“We’ve had a lot of fun, haven’t we?”   

"Imagine the fun we can have in Cardiff"

Tesni sits on his knee and imagines the fun they would have in Cardiff.

“And I might meet this rich man I’m going to marry,” she says;  Rhys admits that she has more chance there than here in Cwmderi.   

"It looks like it!"

“We’re going to Cardiff, then?” she asks, and he replies that it looks like it.   

The inevitable kiss

They kiss.

"Sorry things haven't worked out"

Sioned hands back the keys to the garage office and Garry is sorry that things have not worked out;  “It’s a bit embarrassing, but I’ll need the rent for the next month – it’s in the contract,” he tells her, 

"You'll have to shift the machines"

“And you’ll have to shift the machines.   But if the place is still empty when you sort things out, you’re welcome to come back on the same terms.”

"I can't see that happening"

Sioned cannot see that happening, but Garry remarks that you never know with DJ;  “He’s willing to do anything for you, Sioned – and even if he doesn’t succeed, 

"He'll almost kill himself trying"

“he’ll almost kill himself in the process of trying.”

"I'll be down to pick it up"

Britt is speaking on the phone, “Thank you very much – I’ll be down to pick it up before you close,” she says.   Colin rushes in and says that he cannot stop, 

Colin has a shift at MFC

as he needs to get changed for his MFC shift tonight.

“Garry asked – and I’d be silly to turn down money,” he tells her, 

"Don't let him take advantage, Col"

but she warns him not to let Garry take advantage of him.   

“I know how to deal with Garry,” Colin confidently tells her.   She is popping over to Swansea to get a fancy dress costume for Huwi.

"That's not part of your job"

He points out that it is not a part of her job at Penrhewl;  

"If you see her, don't say anything"

“No, she doesn’t know about it – it’s too complicated to explain now, but if you see her, don’t say anything – it’s a surprise.”

"I can't believe I've never seen that before"

As they sit in front of the television, Ffion cannot believe that she has never seen that film before, and she loves Tom Hanks.   

Cai is becoming quite emotional

It appears to have made Cai quite emotional and he explains, “It was my father – like me, he wasn’t the easiest bloke, but since giving up drinking, 

He maintains that he has seen the error of his ways

“I’ve seen how many things I was trying to hide.”

"Then why did you agree to watch the film?"

Ffion wonders why he agreed to watch the film if he knew that it would upset him;  “I just see things differently, that’s all.   I’m learning to face my feelings and discuss them – I’m all right.”

He grasps Ffion's hand

He holds Ffion’s hand and continues, “These things happen for a reason, Ffi – that I’m back here – 

"We can help each other"

“that we’re back together – and now we can help each other.”   

She is not entirely convinced

As he goes to make a cup of tea, Ffion does not quite know what to make of this.

Tyler finds he has a buyer

Tyler is sitting on the sofa at number 7 when he receives a text message, 

He confirms that it is still available

‘Is the bike still available?’   Tyler replies that it is, and he can arrange to meet if the sender wants to take a look.

His reply arrives on Garry's phone

The reply arrives on Garry’s phone and it confirms his suspicions;  

"Gotcha!"

he smiles triumphantly.

"DJ – are you here?"

Sioned arrives back at Deri Fawr and calls DJ’s name, but receives no reply – 

She sees a note on the table . . .

then she notices a piece of paper on the table.   

. . . which she picks up with trepidation . . .

She looks concerned as she picks it up, 

. . . and is aghast at what she reads

and when she reads the contents of the note, this changes to a look of horror.
