30 June 2022

Sioned has been to the doctor's . . .

Sioned comes out of the medical centre

. . .and is diagnosed with asthma

and informs DJ, “Asthma and a referral to the clinic.”   He strides away and she tells him that it is not the doctors fault;  he irritably says he is not going to see a doctor as he marches off along the back street.

DJ marches resolutely away

“Where are you going, then?” she demands, but he is already out of earshot.

"An expert on sweets live here"

Iolo is just putting on his shoes when Cai comes downstairs;  “I didn’t realise that an expert on sweets lived here,” he says, “Greta gave me great advice on what chocolate to get Twm and Lleucs.”

“Anything you want to know about sweets, Greta is the one to ask,” Iolo replies,

"Invite the children down"

and suggests that he should invite his children down, as Greta would love to see them,

"Nesta would never agree to that"

but Cai doubts that Nesta would agree to that.

"Fancy pasta for dinner?"

Siôn asks if they fancy pasta for dinner;  “I’ve got a new Ragu recipé to try.”

"A meeting of Committee for the Preservation of Bethania"

Cai welcomes this, but Iolo says that he has a meeting of the ‘Committee for the Protection of Bethania’.

“How long have you been on the committee, then?” his father asks, and he says that it is since Megan and Anita forced him to do so.

Siôn thinks this is his kind of thing

Siôn seems to like the idea of this committee.

Kelly comes downstairs . . .

Kelly comes downstairs in Bryntirion

. . . to find scribbling on the wall. . . .

and discovers that Ifan has been practising his artistic skills on the wall.

. . . presumably the work of Ifan

She has to do something about this.

"We need somewhere to live, Eileen"

DJ has gone to Penrhewl, where Eileen is preparing veg boxes and informs him that she is busy.   “Well, we need somewhere to live,” he begins,

"The big dream is over already, then?"

and she concludes that the big dream is over already.

"Sioned has been diagnosed with asthma"

“No, Sioned has been diagnosed with asthma – she’ll be all right when we get away from the damp in Deri Fawr.”

“You’re welcome here, you know that – it’s your home,” Eileen tells him, and he is eager to pass on that good news to Sioned, but Eileen instructs him to hang on.

"Tell her I'll lower the rent"

“Tell her I’ll lower the rent because she’s ill – you can’t live here for free, can you?”

"We need every penny, Eileen"

points out that they need every penny to do the work on Deri Fawr, and Eileen wonders who is going to pay for the heating, hot water and the food which will disappear from the fridge there.

"You and Sioned turned your backs on Penrhewl"

“You and Sioned turned your backs on Penrhewl – we’re not a charity.”

DJ had anticipated that she might show some sympathy now that Sioned is struggling;  “She’s not the only one!” snaps Eileen.   DJ says they will look for somewhere else, in that case,

"I hope the asthma doesn't get worse"

and hope that Sioned’s asthma does not get worse.

More food has been left on the doorstep . . .

Britt opens the front door of the house to find out more food has been left outside,

. . .and Britt knows who is responsible

which she surmises has come from the Deri next door;  she shakes her head.

The next meeting is about to begin

The next committee meeting is taking place inside the Deri, and includes Iolo this time;  Rhys is chatting to Geraint behind the bar, and is called over by Anita, who welcomes them to the second meeting.   She asks if there are any apologies,

"I regret being here, if that counts"

and Iolo remarks, “Well, I regret being here, if that counts.”

“I’d like to discuss what sort of activities we can hold in the chapel to attract more people through the doors,” she says,

Siôn comes to join them . . .

and at that moment Siôn comes in and joins them, apologising for being late.   He hopes that he has not missed anything important.   Megan is pleased to see him.

. . . and takes over the meeting . . .

He immediately tells them that he has been thinking;  “Bethania’s doors need to be wide open – we need to hold activities that will attract the whole community.   Why don’t we throw some ideas around?   Iolo?”

. . . much to Anita's annoyance

Anita is irritated by his taking control of the meeting, emphasising that she is in the chair,

"Bingo – or cards"

and Iolo suggests a bingo night – or cards.

"There will be no gambling in the chapel!"

Megan is adamant that there will be no gambling in the chapel,

"How about a 'Beetle Drive'?"

and Anita had thought of whist and ‘Beetle Drive’.

"Stop her – it's so exciting!"

“Whoa, whoa, please, someone stop her!” exclaims Rhys, as Geraint laughs in the background, “It’s so exciting!” and Siôn considers that Rhys raises a valid point.

"We might need something more"

He says there is nothing wrong with board games in principle, but they might need something more.

“More what, Siôn?” demands Anita, sarcastically, “We’re all ears!”

Gaynor and Hywel encounter Cai

Hywel and Gaynor are walking along the High Street when Cai comes out of the shop with bars of chocolate.   “Someone’s got a sweet tooth today,” Gaynor tells him, and he explains they are for Twm and Lleucu.

"Don't worry, I've paid for them"

“Don’t worry, I’ve paid for them,” he adds, and Hywel finds this remark unbelievably callous.   “Sorry, I don’t know what came over me,” adds Cai,

"At least you're saying it to my face"

and Gaynor comments that at least he is saying it to her face, which is more than most people around there.   He asks if she is OK now.

“You know, Cai, you’re the first person to ask me how I am – apart from Hywel, of course,” she continues,

"It has brought us closer"

and Hywel maintains that it has brought them closer.   Cai complains that has not happened with him and Nesta, and imagines that Hywel must be delighted.

"You've got two young children"

“You’ve got two young children – there’s nothing to celebrate,” growls Hywel, who continues on his way.   Cai tells Gaynor that he has only himself to blame, but she appreciates that it it does not make it any easier.

"Remember to spoil the children"

She advises him to take care and remember to spoil the children.

Cai phones Ffion

He gets out his phone to make a call to Ffion.

Anita is complaining as usual

At the meeting, Anita regrets, “It’s a shame that the ideas are not flowing as freely as that beer!”

"Guest speakers?"

Siôn suggests a series of activities for the whole year – something for everyone;  “Guest speakers?”

"Simply something for you, Siôn!"

She regards this as not something for everyone, but simply something for him.   “We could cover all kinds of subjects – rugby, food,

"OK, fair enough"

perhaps Rhys could talk about his training.”   Megan thinks this is a good idea and will organise a timetable as soon as possible.

"Siôn White and his ego!"

As Anita’s phone rings, she suggests, “Perhaps you could host a night – ‘Siôn White and his ego’!”   The phone call is from Jaclyn.

"You've got a nerve, inviting me over"

Ffion has arrived at Y Felin, and informs Cai, “You’ve got a nerve, inviting me over after last night!   I wanted a word with you, as it happens.”

"Did you enjoy my performance last night?"

He wonders if she and Jinx enjoyed his performance last night,

"Nothing better than a drunk turning up uninvited!"

and she replies, “There’s nothing better than a drunk turning up uninvited!”

He will not happen again, and she goes on, “No, it won’t – because I won’t let you in next time.

"The only place I want to see you is at school"

“The only place I want to see you is at school – understand?”

He protests that he has already said sorry;

"The magic word that makes everything all right?"

“The magic word that makes everything all right?” she sneers,

"All I do these days is apologise"

and he goes on that all he does these days is apologise.

"That's what happens when you drink"

“That’s what happens when you drink,” she says, with feeling.

"I'm not an alcoholic, Ffion"

“I’m not an alcoholic, Ffion,” he argues, but she points out that he looks for comfort in a pint glass, and urges him to sort himself out.   He has a new job, a nice place to live and lovely children;  he must not throw it all away by being a fool.

"I'll see you – at school"

She will see him – at school.

Kelly is repainting the wall

Jason returns home to Bryntirion to find Kelly repainting the yellow wall,

"Picasso's been scribbling over it!"

and referring to Ifan as, “Picasso – he’s been scribbling over the whole wall.   I’ve sorted it, but be careful because the wall is obviously wet.”

He is disappointed that the wall is the same colour

“You’ve used the same colour paint?” he comments, “It could have been a chance to use a softer colour.”

"You didn't do it – did you?"

Kelly suspects that it was he who scribbled on the wall, or that he asked Ifan to do so.

"Do you really think I'd do that?"

“Do you really think I’d do that?” he demands.

"I'm trying to put our stamp on the place"

“Yes, I know you hate the colour – all I’m trying to do, Jase, is put our own stamp on the place,” she squeals, but he points out that it is his mothers house,

"And don't I know it!"

“And don’t I know it!” Kelly growls.   He maintains that it is rather over the top.

"I'm over the top, OK – that's who I am!"

“That’s me – I’m over the top, OK – that’s who am!   You know what – paint it beige for all I care.   I don’t care!”

"Is the quote for Deri Fawr ready?"

Sioned goes to the shop flat to ask if the quote for Deri Fawr is ready;

Mathew produces it

Mathew goes to fetch it, as she complains, “I found an actual mushroom growing in the bathroom.”

"What happened to mate's rates?"

However when he hands her the paperwork, she gasps, “What happened to mate’s rates?” but he explains that is the discounted price.   “What?” she shouts,

"Can't you charge another customer more?"

“Can’t you charge another customer more, to make up for the cost?   They won’t know – I thought we were friends.”

"Not for much longer if you carry on like this!"

Mathew tells her that they will not be friends much longer if she carries on like that.

Dani has a shock when she returns home

Dani arrives back in the Deri flat, and is shocked to see Britt standing there;  “Gwern let me in before he left,” she says.   Dani gives the excuse that she is on her way back out now, but it is pointed out that she just got home.

"Why are you avoiding me?"

“Why are you avoiding me?” Britt demands, “I don’t know what I’ve done.”

"You didn't do anything – nor did I"

After a silence, Dani admits that she has done nothing;  “You didn’t do anything – and I didn’t do anything either.”

"I haven't seen you for ages, Dani"

Britt protests that she has not seen Dani for ages.   “I see you every time I close my eyes, Britt,” sobs Dani, “I’m sorry – for leaving you –

"I left you to die"

“I left you to die, and I could have helped you, but I did nothing.   I’ll never forget your screaming – the flames just went up so quickly – I knew you were in there.”

This stirs up memories

Britt is reliving that experience as she speaks.

"I want you to feel this is your home"

At Bryntirion, Jason is reading a magazine when Kelly produces a box;  “Listen, Kelly, I want you to feel that this is your home – so I love the colours you’ve chosen for the walls,” he says.

"No, you don't like the colours"

“No, you don’t,” she replies, and he maintains that he does, because she picked them,

"You can decorate your home as you please"

and she can decorate her home as she pleases.

"I'm really glad you said that"

“You know what?   I’m really glad you said that, because . . .”

Kelly's latest acquisition

She produces from the box a ‘striking’ piece of artwork in the form of an animal head, complete with horns.   His comment is that it is lovely.

"Well, it's 'different', Kelly"

Anita arrives back, and her reaction is that it is ‘different’;  “Well, we like it, don’t we, Jase?” explains Kelly.

"I've got some news for you"

Anita is glad that they are both there, as she has some news for them,

They are suddenly in a tearing hurry to leave

but they are in a great hurry to go and collect Ifan, so she does not have the chance to tell them what it is.

"How's Iols?"

Tyler is at the bar when Cai come in;  “How’s Iols? Tyler asks, and Cai reminds him what he did to Iolo;  “I don’t want to fight,” says Tyler, and as Iolo happens to come in,

"Would you rather have some schoolboys?"

Cai demands whether he would rather have some schoolboys;  he asks Iolo what he ever saw in him.

“I could ask your wife the same,” is Tyler’s answer, and Cai prepares for another fight, but Iolo stops him.

"Is this how you behave in front of Greta?"

“Is this how you behave at home, in front of Greta?” Tyler demands,

"And you're a great rôle model, aren't you?"

and is called ‘a great rôle model’ himself .

"That's enough, Cai!"

Iolo insists that is enough, wondering who exactly it is helping.

"I didn't want to live you there, Britt"

Dani is sobbing, “I didn’t want to leave you there – you have to believe me, OK?   You called for Brandon – and I couldn’t move.   I’m so sorry!”

"I'm sorry for bringing everything back"

Britt answers that she is sorry, “For bringing everything back,”

"If Eifion hadn't arrived . . ."

but Dani points out that if Eifion had not arrived . . .

“But he did – look at me – I’m here – pinch me if you want to,” Britt tells her,

"You lost your boyfriend in a fire"

“You lost your boyfriend in a fire – of course it’s difficult for you.”   They sit together on the sofa, and Dani says that it means a lot to her;

"No more dodging me, OK?"

“No more dodging me, OK?” says Britt.

“I think about Brandon every day,” Dani goes on, and Britt is often talking to him;

"I feel him drifting away"

she knows he is not there, but as time goes on she feels him drifting away, fading a little bit, so they have little chats to keep them close.

"He loved putting things to rights'

Dani remembers that he liked putting things to rights, and Britt maintains that he could talk for Wales.

"Say hello from me next time"

“Say hello from me next time,” Dani tells her.

"Ifan was shattered"

Jason has just put Ifan to bed, remarking that he was shattered;

Anita has something to tell them

Anita tells him to sit on the sofa as has something to tell them.

"I'm moving out!"

“I’m more than all right – I’m moving out!” she announces, “Jaclyn’s leaving number 10 – the place will be empty, so I might as well go back.”

"That's terrible, Anita"

Kelly and Jason pretend that this is an awful shock and that they will be devastated to see her go;  “We shall just have to manage somehow,” says Jason, “It won’t be the same, will it?”

Anita replies that these things cannot last for ever,

Jason is dejected

and he looks very dejected;  she tells him not to worry, and is now going upstairs for a bath.

"You'll get use to it"

“Look, I know you’ll miss me at the start, but you’ll get used to it,” she assures him.

"Yeah!"

As soon as she has gone, Kelly and Jason express their jubilation at having the place to themselves again.

"I'm not asking again – sofa!"

Iolo sternly tells his father and Cai to sit down;  “I’m not asking again – sofa!”   They obey his instruction

"You two have embarrassed me today"

and he reprimands them, “You two have embarrassed me today, you on the committee and you with Tyler!”

"No – I'm talking now!"

He will not suffer any interruptions and continues, “Right, Dad –the way you spoke to Anita today was embarrassing.   You were throwing your weight around – what were you doing there?”

"I was looking for the 'old Siôn'"

He reports that he was looking for ‘the old Siôn’

"Cai was right – I've lost my way"

and that Cai was right, he has lost his way.  “The Bethania Committee is exactly what I need.”

Iolo tells him, Right, you can go on your own, because I won’t be there!   I’ve got better things to do than listen to you and Anita argue.”

"I don't know what that show was with Tyler"

Then he turns his attention to Cai;  “I don’t know what that show was with Tyler – Tyler and I are cool.”   Cai demands how this can possibly be after everything Tyler has done to him.

"We're parents first and exes second"

“Because we’re parents first and exes second – something for you and Nesta to consider, perhaps,” Iolo explains.

They look at each other

The two of them look at each other, having been suitably admonished.

"Stop Googling your symptoms"

In the Deri, DJ urges Sioned to stop Googling her symptoms, which is the worst thing she can do.   “I’m not,” she snarls, “I’m trying to find a loan, so that we can pay Mathew.”

"You know I don't like borrowing"

He reminds her that he does not like borrowing, but she insists that everyone borrows, “And this company has really good rates, anyway.   I know what I’m doing – they’re not loan sharks!”

“I don’t like being in debt,” he grumbles, and she describes him as old-fashioned.

"Yes, it's part of my charm"

“Yes, it’s part of my charm,” he alleges, “I mean it – this is how it starts – one loan leads to another, and in the end, we’re up to our eyeballs.”

"Better than being up to our eyeballs in damp!"

“It’s better than being up to our eyeballs in damp!” she replies, and he is determined that he will find a way – she should leave it to him,

"This is not the way, Sioned!"

stressing that this is not the way.

As soon as the coast is clear . . .

As soon as he goes to the bar,

. . . she applies for a £10,000 loan

Sioned completes the application for a £10,000 loan.
