"Pancakes for breakfast"

As Aaron walks into the room on New Year’s Eve, he finds his mother making pancakes;  “Last day of the year – special breakfast together,” she says,

"I don't want anything to eat"

but he does not want anything to eat.

"We could do something together tonight"

Colin suggests that they could do something together tonight, just the three of them, unless he has made arrangements with his mates.

"I don't know what I'm doing yet"

Aaron replies that he is not sure what he is doing yet;  “Right, we’ll see you at some point tonight – for the surprise,” says Colin, “I’ll see you later, then,” and he leaves the flat.

"I'll go back to bed for a while"

Aaron thinks that he will go back to bed for a while, and Britt expects that it will be a late night tonight.

Aaron silently slips out

She sits down on the sofa with her pancake, and does not notice Aaron, slipping quietly out of his room and down the stairs.

Jinx calls to Megan

Jinx crosses the road and calls to Megan, who appears to be preoccupied.

"Looking for guidance from the Almighty"

She explains to him that she has been praying;  “Looking for guidance from the Almighty,”

"Did you have any luck?"

and he asks if she had any luck.   She replies that she does not know the answer to that, and declines Jinx’s offer of a chat.

"I shall be making pizzas"

He says that he will be working tonight, making pizzas, and they wish each other Happy New Year.

Jinx comes across Aaron . . .

As Jinx walks round the corner, he sees Aaron,

. . . looking at the bus timetable

consulting the bus timetable, then looking at his phone.

"Going anywhere nice?"

“Going anywhere nice?” Jinx enquires, “The first rule of running away is what time the bus leaves.”   Aaron replies that he is not running away, but is told, “It’s just, when I was running away, I had a bag on my back and I was on edge, too.

"Do you have somewhere to stay?"

“Do you have somewhere to stay?”

"You obviously want to tell me"

Aaron says that he has and adds, “You obviously want to tell me – so what happened to you?”   Jinx invites him to come over to the flat, as it is warmer there, and reassures him that Mrs Llywelyn is not there.

"You're not some kind of weirdo, are you?"

“Look at me – you’re not some kind of weirdo, are you?” demands Aaron;

"A cup of tea – nothing else"

Jinx says he was going to offer him a cup of tea – nothing else, and walks away.

Aaron glances into the chippy . . .

Aaron peers through the window of the chip shop, where Colin is doing some cleaning,

. . . then looks across at Cysgod y Glyn

then looks across to Cysgod y Glyn.

"He hadn't heard that Izzy died"

In APD, Mathew has just had a phone call from a friend of Izzy who had not heard the news of her death, and tells Jason,

"You go home and get changed"

who suggests, “We were going to close early today, weren’t we?   So you go home and get changed, and I will lock up here, I’ll meet you in the Deri in half an hour, yeah?”

Jinx sorts out things Aaron will need

At Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx has found Aaron a hat and some other clothes;  “And you’ll need a sleeping bag.”

"Why are you helping me?"

Aaron wonders why Jinx is helping him, after everything he has done;

"People help each other"

“That’s what people do – they help each other,” is the reply, “People will forget – or if not, at least they’ll be able to forgive in time.”

"They'll always hate me"

Aaron is convinced that everyone will always hate him, then Jinx suddenly remembers some socks;  while he has gone to fetch them,

He spots Jinx's wallet . . .

Aaron has a look in his wallet which is lying nearby.

. . . and relieves it of £30

He discovers £30 in notes, but as he is removing them, Arwen appears in the doorway;

Half to me, and I won't say a word"

“Half to me, and I won’t say a word,” she tells him, and is about to call for Jinx, so he has no choice but to agree.

"Help me escape on the next bus to London"

He urges her to help him escape on the next bus to London, and he will give her half before he leaves.

Megan is extremely anxious

In the visiting room at the prison, Megan is sitting, looking very flustered;

Dylan is surprised to see her

when Dylan comes in, he is surprised to see her.

"Cos it's the New Year"

In the Deri, Tesni is trying to come up with alternative names for drinks;  “Cosmopolitan turns into ‘Cos it’s the New Year’, then Woo Hoo could be ‘Woo-hoo – it’s New Year!’”

"How about 'Sex on the Beach'?"

However, when she gets to ‘Sex on the Beach’,

"Grope under the Duvet?"

Cassie suggests, “Grope under the Duvet’,” but they draw the line at any ideas for ‘Harvey Wallbanger’.

"Pint, please – and one for Jason"

Mathew comes in and asks for a pint, and one for Jason, who is on his way.

He awkwardly tells Tesni that everything is fine with him,

"It's going to be hard for him"

and Cassie appreciates that things will be hard for him.

"Big celebrations in Cwmderi tonight?"

“I’m sure there will be big celebrations in Cwmderi tonight – what will it be?”   A night in the Deri – fireworks at midnight?” asks Dylan, and Megan replies that she will not be going to the Deri tonight.   “Pity – you could give my regards to Dani,” he goes on.

"I'm not here to discuss New Year's celebrations"

“Dylan, I didn’t come here to discuss New Year celebrations,” she informs him,

"That lovely lunch we shared"

and he assumes that she would rather talk about the last time they met, and the lovely lunch they shared.

"Don't play games with me, Dylan"

“Please, don’t play games with me,” she says, and he is very grateful that she has not told anyone.

“You didn’t answer my question?

"What do you know about my son, Gareth Wyn?"

“What do you know about my son, Gareth Wyn?” Megan demands, and he simply smiles.

"Kelly's doing a shift with the pizzas"

Mathew is surprised that Jason and Kelly are not together tonight, and is told that Kelly is doing a shift with the pizzas tonight, so it is just him and Ifan;  “And Auntie Neet –

"Mustn't forget Auntie Neet!"

“mustn’t forget Auntie Neet!”

"I don't feel like celebrating"

Mathew does not feel like celebrating, and declines the offer to go over to Bryntirion.   Jason will put a pint behind the bar for Mathew  before he goes.

"The scholarship account will be live"

Elsewhere in the pub, Gaynor is explaining to Siôn, “Once I’ve transferred the ‘crypto’ money into the scholarship account, it will be live then – I’m going to do it this afternoon.”

"That's excellent"

Siôn says that is excellent

He hands over a cheque

and hands her a cheque for £500 on behalf of Y Winllan, adding that he would like to make an annual contribution.

She imagines that they will be able to keep the scholarship going for another ten years,

"Izzy would be very pleased"

and Siôn knows that Izzy would be very pleased.

"To Izzy!"

They drink a toast, ‘to Izzy’.

"You're celebrating the New Year a bit early"

From his vantage point at the bar, Mathew sees this and comments, “You’re celebrating the New Year a bit early.”

"The memorial scholarship is starting"

Siôn explains that they are celebrating the start of Izzy’s memorial scholarship, and it is important that local businesses show support.   He suggests that perhaps APD could contribute.

Trying to ease your conscience, are you?"

Mathew snarls, “You’re doing a lot for poor Izzy, aren’t you?   Trying to ease your conscience, are you?   You didn’t bother to listen to her when she was alive!”

"You're not being fair, Mathew"

Siôn protests that he is not being fair.

"Siôn, your son raped Izzy!"

“No?   How do you think Izzy would feel about you two being good friends?   Siôn, your son raped her!”

Gaynor does not consider this an appropriate place to talk about it,

"You never want to discuss it!"

and he rages, “You never want to discuss it!   Izzy’s in her grave and you still refuse to acknowledge the truth.   But then, it doesn’t matter, does it – because there’s a scholarship in her memory?”

"Yes, it's true – Macs did rape Izzy"

Gaynor confesses that it is true;  “Macs did rape Izzy – and I did nothing.”

Mathew angrily stresses, “You did absolutely nothing – you completely ignored it and you let your own daughter suffer – you should be ashamed of yourself!”

Gaynor is overcome by emotion

This is the final straw and Gaynor is in tears;  she makes a rapid exit from the Deri.

"Whatever you don't eat, you can put in your bag"

As Aaron is rolling out the pizza dough, Jinx observes, “The best thing about these pizzas is that they’re tasty when they’re cold – so whatever you don’t eat, you can keep in your bag.”

"What?  He's getting a free pizza?"

Arwen does not approve of this;  “What?   He’s getting all that stuff and a free pizza?”   Aaron wonders if they will be opening a London branch, and Arwen is told that Betsy’s mother will be arriving to pick her up in a minute.   She moans that she wants to stay there with Aaron;  “We’re friends and I want to see him before he goes, to say goodbye.”

"You need to pack your bag"

Jinx instructs her to pack her bag,

"I shall need some money"

but she argues that she will need some money to pay Betsy’s mother for the bowling and the food, so Jinx tells her to help herself from his wallet.

"There's nothing here!"

Of course, she announces that there is nothing there, which comes as a surprise to him,

"I haven't seen it!"

and Aaron denies any knowledge of the money,

Arwen removes it from his rucksack

so she goes to his backpack and retrieves the £30.   He shouts at her, and Jinx is very disappointed;

"I was trying to help you, Aaron!"

“I was trying to help you – you’ve gone too far now!”

"Honestly, I don't know any more"

In the prison, Dylan tries to convince Megan, “Honestly, I don’t know any more about Gareth Wyn than what you’ve told me – it was just a bit of fun,”

Megan is not convinced

but she does not believe him.   “I said what I thought you wanted to hear – that he was alive and well.

"There are some things you're better off not knowing"

“There are some things, Megan, you’re better off not knowing.”

"Please, Dylan!"

She begs him to tell her anything that he knows,

"You should stop asking questions"

but he advises, “For your own sake, I think you should stop asking questions – especially the sort of questions you don’t want the answers to.”

"They're a bit strict here"

The buzzer sounds for the end of visiting time and he says that he has to go, as they are a bit strict in the prison.   As he walks back towards his cell,

Megan is distraught

she pleads with him to contact her if he knows anything.

DJ meets Sioned

Outside the shop, DJ encounters Sioned and he says that she looks nice;  “You always do – I just thought you might be going out to celebrate.”   She replies that she is making pizzas tonight.   He might be popping into the Deri for a pint, or he might not;  he does not really like New Year’s Eve.

"Do you remember last year?"

“I enjoyed it last year – do you remember?” he goes on,

"Afterwards we walked home"

and she recalls that it was rather a flop;  afterwards they walked home – it was a clear night.

"Happy New Year"

After a pause, they wish each other Happy New Year and go their separate ways.

Kelly finds Jinx . . .

Kelly comes round the corner by the chip shop just as Jinx is going up to the flat.

. . . who is about to speak to Britt

“I need a word with Britt,” he says,

"What will your girlfriend has to say about that?"

and she wonders what his girlfriend, Sioned, will have to say about that.

"You think I have time for a girlfriend?"

“Do you think I have time for a girlfriend, with all the work I have to do and the mess in the flat?” he demands.

She reminds him that she will be over to help him later, and he remarks that at the moment he has someone else helping,

"Aaron's helping me"

in the form of Aaron.

Kelly intends to sort this out now

I’m not having that!” she snarls, and marches off along the back street towards Cysgod y Glyn.

"You've got a cheek!"

Once inside, she growls, “You’ve got a cheek!” and Aaron realises that Jinx has told her.

"Look, he knows he made a mistake"

Jinx points out that Aaron knows that he made a mistake with the swastika,

"Hate crime – totally unforgivable!"

but Kelly continues, “Hate crime – totally unforgivable!   Don’t you have something to say?   You’d rather let the artwork speak!”

Jinx explains, “He knows what he did was wrong – that it was cruel.”   Kelly wonders if he intends do it again,

"Not with support – and forgiveness"

and Jinx replies, “Not with support – and forgiveness.”

"Thugs like that never change!"

She squeals, “How naïve are you, Jinx?   Thugs like that never change, and Iolo’s your friend.   You’re pretending to support Tyler, while you put a roof over that little Nazi’s head!

"Find some other mug to help you!"

“If you want extra help tonight, you’ll have to find another mug – I can’t support this company while he’s here!”   She storms out of the flat.

"If I'm quick, I can catch the next bus"

“You see!” shouts Aaron, “If I’m quick, I can catch the next bus!”   Jinx points out that he is desperate for help, and Aaron is desperate for money.

"I'll give you £30 if you stay"

He will be paid £30 if he continues to help tonight, and can sleep on the sofa if he wants.

Now he calms down again

He calms down and agrees to stay, which is a great relief to Jinx.

"Don't steal anything else while I'm gone"

“I have to pop out – don’t steal anything else while I’m gone,” Jinx warns.

"I didn't want to say this in front of Hywel"

Gaynor has been asked to come to Y Felin to see Siôn;  “I didn’t want to have to say this in front of Hywel,” he begins, and she can understand that it is hard to accept that his son did such a thing.

"I knew at the time it had happened"

He shakes his head and says that it is not hard;  “I knew at the time that it had happened –

"Macs confessed to me"

“Macs confessed to me when it happened, and I did not say a word.”

"I can't believe it about Aaron!"

Back at Bryntirion, Kelly gasps, “I can’t believe it about Aaron – and Jinx is trying to be some sort of do-gooding saviour!”

"Can't we talk about something else, Kelly?"

Jason would rather talk about something else and forget about them, at least until she goes back there to help.

"I'm not going back there!"

“I’m not going back there to help,” she affirms, which he regards as good news, so they can go to the Deri.

"If Auntie Neet is willing to babysit"

“If Auntie Neet is willing to babysit,” he adds, just as she comes downstairs, wearing her coat, and informs them that she has been on the phone to Kelly’s mother.

She says she is going to Merthyr . . .

“She was going to spend the New Year with the darts team, but four of them have had food poisoning – kebabs, I think she said.   So I’m going to Merthyr to stay with her.”

. . . and Kelly knows she is lying

Kelly does not believe this story, but says that she would like to go and see her mother again,

"You know how long you take to pack"

but Anita insists that she has to leave this very minute and cannot be delayed by Kelly, who is always very slow to pack.

"What was that all about?"

After she has gone, Jason wonders what that was all about;

"She's not going to Merthyr . . ."

“She’s not going to Merthyr – I talked to Mam half an hour ago, to wish her Happy New Year, and there was not a word about any darts team, Kelly tells him,

". . . there's a man in the mix somewhere"

Well, my women’s intuition tells me that there’s a man in the mix somewhere.”

"Forgot my phone – what an idiot!"

Colin comes upstairs in the chip shop flat, having forgotten his phone, and he thinks that it would be best to let Aaron order the pizza, as they do not want to step on his toes.

"Now Aaron's turned a corner"

“No, you’re right – especially now he’s turned a corner,” Britt agrees.   Then the buzzer sounds, and they find that Jinx is visiting them.

"How are you – with Aaron?"

He says that he is fine;  “How are you – that’s the question – with Aaron?”   Britt replies that he had the session the other day and now seems much better, but he is not there at the moment.   “I know that – he’s in the flat with me,” Jinx enlightens them, “I saw him earlier and he was planning to go to London.”

"He may be going to see Catrin"

Britt imagines that he was going to see Catrin, but thinks it strange that he did not mention it;  Colin suspects that he may be fetching Catrin home for New Year,

"No – he was running away"

but Jinx explains, “He was running away – he had a bag and his clothes and everything.   He was planning to stay with a friend – I’ve convinced him to stay in the flat, at least for tonight – but who knows what he will do tomorrow.”

"Why would he run away?"

His mother wonders why he would run away, and Jinx suspects that he does not know that himself.

"He says he doesn't want to talk to you"

She wants to talk to him immediately, but is dissuaded from doing this, as he has said he does not want to see his mother.   Colin advises her to take notice of what Jinx says.

"Where have we gone wrong?"

When Jinx has left, she demands, “Why does he want to leave me?   Where have we gone wrong?”

Colin cannot answer that

but Colin has no answers.

"Izzy didn't say anything – neither did you"

At Y Felin, Siôn goes on, “I was ready to face the consequences, but Izzy didn’t say anything – neither did you.

"I turned my back on Macs"

“I turned my back on Macs – I couldn’t face him.”

Gaynor confesses that she did the same with Izzy, and that it is her fault;

"I was thinking more like a head teacher"

“I was thinking more like a head teacher than a mother – I let her down and I have to live with that.”   Siôn considers that the best thing would be to leave the matter alone, and she demands, “Are you worried that I will go to the police and report Macs for the rape?   I’d have to report myself as well –

"I'm not going to report anyone . . ."

“and I’m not going to report anyone.   The only person who would get any comfort from that would be Izzy –

". . . she's not here, is she?"

“and she’s not here, is she?”

He realises this is why the scholarship is so important;

"We need to think of the future now"

they need to think of the future now, not the past.

Iolo comes face to face with Aaron

Iolo is not at all happy when he finds that the pizza he has ordered is delivered by Aaron.   “If I’d known you worked for them, I would have gone elsewhere – what have you done?   Poisoned it?”

"I would never do that"

Aaron maintains that he would never do that, but is reminded, “I thought you would never paint a swastika on my house!”

Aaron maintains that he was not thinking and he had to come over because Iolo would not have listened to him otherwise.

Britt has happened upon this conversation

Britt has just come through the alley and is watching them.

"Look, this pizza is on the house"

I wanted to say sorry,” Aaron continues, “Look, this pizza is on the house – if you want it, take it.”

"I don't think a pizza will save you"

Iolo concedes that he is a brave man to come and say sorry, “But I don’t think a pizza will save you!”

Aaron drops it on the pavement

drops the pizza box on the pavement and walks away,

"Aaron – I just want to talk!"

upon which his mother emerges from the alley and calls to him.

He disappears round the corner

He runs away as she shouts, “I just want to talk to you!”

A car arrives to pick up Anita

Anita is waiting at a roadside layby outside the village when her lift arrives;

"I would have come to Bryntirion"

it is Ieuan Griffiths, who wonders, “I don’t know why you wanted to meet here – I would have come to Bryntirion to pick you up,” but she insists that is out of his way.

She is ushered into the car

He opens the door for the lady to enter,

"Why did you want to run away?"

Back in the village, Aaron has just walked out of Cysgod y Glyn, carrying a delivery of pizzas;  his mother calls after him, “Why did you want to run away?”

"Oh – Jinx has been talking"

He demands how she knew that, and realises that Jinx has been talking.   “Why did you want to leave us – things aren’t that bad, are they?   Say something – talk to me,” she pleads.

He replies that he cannot talk, because he has a delivery to make, and tells her to go home.

Britt yells extremely loudly . . .

She screams at the top of her voice at him, “I just want to talk!” but he ignores her, so she walks over to the Christmas display at the foot of the statue of the mythical Fflam.

. . . then takes out her frustration on the display . . .

She takes a violent kick at it, sending the decorations flying in all directions,

. . . stamping on the Father Christmas . . .

throws the Father Christmas to the ground and stamps on it.

. . . fling in the reindeer . . .

A reindeer goes sailing through the air towards Bethania, and all the while she is screaming manically.

. . . then subsiding into the display

She ends up sitting in the display.
