Kelly has a notice . . .

Kelly comes downstairs in the café carrying a sheet of paper;  after hesitating, she fixes it to the window.   

 . . .about the café closing

It reads, “The café will close this week and reopen under new ownership soon.   Thank you for your support.”   

She puts on her apron

She puts on her apron.

"What does it feel like to be 30?"

Up in the shop flat, Mathew asks Izzy what it feels like to be 30;  

"A lot like it did yesterday"

“A lot like it did when I was 29,” she answers, but he reminds her she did not get a breakfast like that yesterday.   

"I'm saving up to get you something special next year!"

Then they hear the sound of her father coming upstairs, singing, “Happy birthday to you!   Here you go, love – a little something from Britt and me – I didn’t spend too much because I’m saving up to get you something special for your 30th next year.”

"But I'm 30 today, Dad"

She advises him that she is 30 today, 

"What?   I've messed up!"

and he realises that he has messed up;  “Don’t worry – buy me a birthday drink in the Deri tonight,” she says, but he feels so stupid, and he walks out, 

"Colin, how could you have got that so wrong?"

muttering to himself how he could have got that so wrong.

"Right, I'm off to work"

Mathew now has to leave for work, tells Izzy to open all her cards, and he will see her later, 

Izzy does not appreciate the first card"

but when she opens the first of them, her face falls.

"It's a shame the café is closing, isn't it?"

As Jaclyn is doing the ironing, she comments to Guto that it is a shame the cafe is closing;  he is wearing his headphones, still doing his Spanish course, and does not hear her.   “Perhaps we should go and get some cakes for tea – what do you say?”

Of course, she gets no response, so shouts at him, 

"I'm working, Mam"

and he protests that he is working;  

"I can't concentrate with Dad there all the time"

“I thought you went to Ffion’s to concentrate on your work,” she tells him, but is told that Guto cannot concentrate there because his father is there all the time.

“He’s there are every night, Mam, playing Trivial Pursuit – it’s embarrassing!” he says as he leaves the house.   

"Did you know about your Dad going to Ffion's?"

Jaclyn asks Tesni if she knew about her father going to Ffion’s in the evenings.   

"I did hear something"

“I did hear something,” she replies, and her mother suspects that something is going on, but Tesni seems reluctant to give any answer.

Ffion gets a slap on the bottom

Rhys turns up at Cysgod y Glyn and gives Ffion a playful slap on the bottom;  “I wasn’t expecting a call at this time of the morning!” he says, but she stops him there.

"I didn't invite you over for that!"

“I didn’t invite you over for that – I’ve got something to say!” she insists, “I’ve been thinking about this arrangement a lot – I wasn’t expecting you to be texting, begging to come over.”

"I thought that was what you wanted!"

He says he was under the impression that is what she wanted, 

"Naked pictures at 2:00am?"

but she protests, “You sent me naked pictures at 2:00 am and asked me to come over – and you did the same the night before!”

"Tell me when and where"

He laughs, “OK – no more night pictures – tell me when and where, and I’ll be there!”   

"We should stop before someone gets hurt!"

She informs him quite seriously that she thinks they should stop before someone gets hurt.   He does not agree with this, stressing that nobody is getting hurt and they get what they want;  “I thought you were enjoying it!”

She concedes that she was, but she now needs to move on;  concerned about being rejected, 

"There we are, then – there's nothing else to say"

he mutters, “There we are, then – there’s nothing else to say,” picks up his jacket and walks out.

"You don't know who bought the café, do you?"

Siôn is having a drink in the Deri when Garry enquires, “You don’t happen to know who’s bought the café, do you?   There was nothing in the window.”

"Yes – me!"

When Siôn reveals that he is the buyer, Garry bursts out laughing;  “You are joking?   

"You're not business savvy!"

“You’re not business savvy!”   

"I ran this place for a while"

Siôn points out that he ran the Deri for a while.

"Until you trashed the place with a sledgehammer!"

Garry recalls, “Until it became too much for you – you trashed the place with a sledgehammer!”   [6 January 2015]   Siôn maintains that this will be different, 

"I've got a lot of good ideas"

and he has a lot of good ideas, as Garry will find out in a few weeks.   “People don’t want your hippy-dippy ideas,” Garry snarls, 

"They want a bacon bap and a cheap cup of tea"

“They want a bacon bap and a cheap cup of tea to get over their hangovers.   I bet Kelly fleeced you, too.”

Siôn says that he got a fair price, £150,000.   Garry is amazed by this;  “For the whole place – the flat as well?   

"You are an unscrupulous capitalist, after all"

“I take it all back – you are an unscrupulous capitalist after all!”   Siôn argues that he is doing this for the community, and Kelly was happy;  he has to go over there to see if the paperwork is ready.

Garry asks whether Kelly has signed anything yet, 

"Unlike you, I know how to trust people"

and Siôn informs him, “Unlike you, Garry, I know how to trust people.”   

Garry is very amused

Garry finds him highly amusing.

"What does this card mean, Math?"

When Mathew returns to the flat Izzy shows him the card, and wonders what it means;  “That your mother wants to say happy birthday to you?” he suggests.

"Is she pretending we haven't fallen out?"

“Does it mean she wants to say sorry – or just pretend that we haven’t fallen out?” Izzy asks.   

"This might be her way of building bridges"

He accuses her of overthinking it, but she insists that it is important.   Things have been awkward between her and her mother, so a card might be a way to build bridges.

"She should talk to me, then!"

 

“If she wants to build bridges, she should talk to me, instead of pretending everything is all right!” Izzy exclaims.

"Perhaps I'll get you a packet of crisps . . ."

He urges her not to let her mother spoil her birthday;  “We’ll have a couple of drinks in the Deri and forget about her – and perhaps I will get you a packet of crisps – and not steal any.   A sugar daddy and a toy boy in one – 

". . . aren't you a lucky girl?"

“aren’t you a lucky girl?”

Jaclyn visits the garage

Jaclyn comes into the garage with a letter for Gerwyn, which will save her going up to Maes-y-Deri.   

"Are you and Ffion having an affair?"

She does not think that it is important, and then gets to the real reason for her visit.   “Are you and Ffion having an affair?   

Gerwyn splutters with indignation

“It’s all right if you are – I just think I have the right to know.”   

"I can't 'have an affair' – we're separated"

He points out that he cannot have an affair, as he and Jaclyn are now separated, so Jaclyn assumes that means he is seeing Ffion, but he says it is none of her business.   

"It would be nice if you told me yourself"

“I just thought it would have been nice if you had told me yourself – good luck,” and she walks out again, 

Gerwyn's perpetual look of bemusement

leaving Gerwyn with his usual confused expression.

"We've only got Rich Tea biscuits"

At number 7, Tyler advises that they only have Rich Tea biscuits, as Iolo opens a letter.   “I can go to the shop to buy better biscuits, if you want,” Tyler says, and then notices the concerned look on Iolo’s face.

"The details of the operation"

“The details of the operation,” he says, “Will you be OK to look after Greta?   I think it would be better for you to stay here with her, rather than to come with me.   

"She wants to come on holiday to the hospital"

“I’ve tried to talk to her, but I don’t think she understands – she keeps asking if she can come on holiday to the hospital.”   

"We'll talk to her together"

They agree that they will try to talk to her together.

Now Tyler is going to the shop to buy some proper biscuits;  

"Life's too short to eat Rich Tea"

“Because life’s too short to eat Rich Tea.”

"How are you feeling, Kelly?"

Sara arrives at the café flat, where Kelly is looking very downcast;  “I saw the sign in the window – how are you feeling?”

"Like I'm making a huge mistake"

“Like I’m making a huge mistake,” Kelly groans, and Sara felt like that before she closed Awyr Iach, 

"Focus on what you hate most"

but urges Kelly to focus on the things she will not miss – what she hates most about the job.

“I used to hate refilling the salt shakers – 

"I did it this morning, and I cried!"

“but I did it this morning, and I cried!” Kelly confesses, “I’m an emotional wreck – 

"I can't face signing the contract"

“I haven’t signed the contract yet – I can’t face it!”

"It's sad when a business in the village fails . . ."

Someone can be heard coming up the stairs, and Garry remarks, “It’s always sad, isn’t it, when a business in the village fails?”

“Sit down, Gar – make yourself at home!” Kelly snarls at him, 

". . . and more sad when someone takes advantage"

and he goes on to say that what is even more sad is to see someone taking advantage of the situation.   Sara wonders if he is feeling all right.

"What he's offering isn't a fair price"

“Have you signed Siôn’s contract yet?’ he demands, “Well, don’t!   What he’s offering is not a fair price – and I think I can help you with that.”   

"You've already had your chance, Garry"

Kelly reminds him that he has already had his chance, but he goes on, “Now you’re selling the flat as well, I can offer £20,000 more than Siôn!   

"But I want an answer today"

“But I want an answer today.”

Kelly is in a quandary

He turns and goes back downstairs, while Kelly looks very undecided.

Rhys invites Dylan for a drinking session

Rhys is sitting on his own in the Deri, gradually getting drunk, and leaves a message for Dylan;  “When you get this message come over to the Deri for a session.”   

"Are you celebrating something, Rhys?|

Then he sees Izzy and Mathew coming in;  she asks if he is celebrating something, 

"i'm young, free and single – life is great"

and he replies dejectedly, “I’m young, I’m free, I’m single!   Life is great.   How’s Lois?   Tell her I say hello – come and sit over here!”

"We're celebrating Izzy's birthday"

Mathew refuses the offer, explaining that they are celebrating Izzy’s birthday, and Rhys is sorry he does not have a card for her, 

"I'm not a fan of cards"

but she says that she is not a fan of cards.   “Enjoy yourselves – Dylan’s on his way to join me now!” he slurs.

Izzy tells Mathew that he has been there all afternoon, and Mathew describes him as an idiot;  

"I've had enough of his nonsense"

“I’ve just had enough of his nonsense, that’s all.”   She enthusiastically enquires who is coming tonight, 

"You and me, your father, perhaps, and Sioned"

and he answers, “You, me, your father perhaps, Sioned – a few people couldn’t come,” 

"Is that all?"

and she appears disappointed.

"I don't trust Garry . . ."

Kelly is worried;  “I don’t trust Garry,” she says, and neither does Sara;  

". . . twenty grand, though!"

“Twenty grand, though!”   

"Do you think Siôn would pay a bit more?"

Sara wonders whether Siôn might pay a bit more, but Kelly points out, 

"Siôn thinks he's doing the village a favour"

“Siôn thinks he’s doing the village a favour – God knows what Garry would do!” but Kelly is reminded that she is not a charity;  she has to fight to get what’s right for her.

"Why don't you phone another estate agent?"

“Why don’t you phone another estate agent to see what they think?” Sara suggests, and Kelly considers the idea.

"My pyjamas are full of holes"

Iolo comes downstairs, having realised that he will have to buy new pyjamas;  “Mine are full of holes.”   

"Did she make this herself?"

Tyler points out to him a card which has been made by Greta, together with a little help with the spelling. 

Iolo is rather emotional and says the card is lovely;  

"I wrote a card like that for Mam"

“I just remember writing a card like this for Mam before the operation – but it’s all right – I just hate to see Greta going through the same thing.”

“Look, I know you’re thinking about your mother a lot – but it’s not the same at all.   

"You're not going anywhere!"

“You’re not going anywhere, Iol – Greta and I won’t let you!”   

"I had forgotten how good you are in a crisis"

Iolo had forgotten how good Tyler is in a crisis.   

"They didn't have any decent biscuits"

“Speaking of a crisis, I’ve got bad news for you – they didn’t have any decent biscuits in the shop – 

"We're stuck with Rich Tea!"

“we’re stuck with the Rich Tea!”

Iolo studies the card

Iolo stares at the card.

"It was about broadband for the house"

Gerwyn comes into number 10, informing Jaclyn that the letter was about broadband for the house, 

"You had the affair, not me"

then insists, “You have no right to be angry with me – you had the affair, not me.”   

"It would be nice if we could be honest with each other"

She maintains that it would be nice if they could be honest with each other;  “OK, you want some honesty?   The marriage should have ended before you slept with Garry!   

"We drifted apart a long time ago"

“We drifted apart a long time ago,” he says.

"No, we're a good team"

Jaclyn does not agree with this;  “No, we’re a good team – we raised those kids, and they’re lovely young people – usually.”   He argues that, if it were not for the children, they would have finished years ago.

"It's like a car!"

He tries to think of something to compare it with;  “It’s like a car!”   

"How is our marriage like a car?"

She is really eager to find out how this marriage is like a car.   “Right, with a car, you can change the fan belt, you can change the carburettor – the head gasket, even – although that’s a huge job . . . 

"Sometimes you just run out of road"

“The point is, sometimes you just run out of road.”

"And Ffion is a new road?"

She thinks that is a good analogy;  “And that’s what Ffion is, is it?   A new road?”   

"I helped her sell her car – and we play Trivial Pursuit

He reiterates that there is nothing going on with Ffion;  “I helped her sell her car and we play Trivial Pursuit, that’s all – honest, now.”  Jaclyn does believe him, remarking that he has always been a rubbish liar.   

"I dont regret the journey"

He leaves the house, but not before she has remarked, “We might have run out of road, but I don’t regret the journey.”

Siôn tries to contact Kelly

Siôn is standing by the shop, looking up at the café flat, and is surprised that Kelly is not answering her phone.   Just then Sara comes out of the café, 

"Is Kelly up in the flat, Sara?"

and he asks if Kelly is up in the flat;  he is told that she is busy, 

"I'm only collecting the contract"

but he says that he is only collecting the contract.   

He ignores her recommendation not to disturb Kelly, but stops when she advises that Kelly has received another offer.   When asked who made the offer, 

She points to Garry, across the ro

Sara points to Garry who is passing on the other side of the road.

"You can't do this, Garry!"

Siôn insists that Garry cannot do this, but he is quite adamant that he can;  “I offered Kelly £20,000 more – and it’s still a bargain!”   

Siôn protests, “You would not know how much I offered, if I hadn’t told you,” and Garry reminds him that it is a sign he is not business savvy.

"A good businessman knows when to keep his mouth shur!"

“A good businessman knows when to keep his mouth shut!” he declares as he walks away.   

Siôn goes into the café 

Furious, Siôn heads into the café.

Rhys has drunk himself into a stupor

As Rhys can be seen, trying to avoid dropping off to sleep, in the background, 

"How does the big 3-0 feel, then?"

Sioned asks Izzy, “How does the big 3-0 feel, then?” 

"It's only a number, isn't it?"

and Mathew remarks that it is only a number.   “I’m not looking forward to turning 30,” Sioned admits, 

"Saying goodbye to my misspent youth"

“And saying goodbye to my misspent youth.”

"You got engaged to Macs – he'd raped me!"

Izzy disparagingly remarks, “Some of us had more of a misspent youth than others – for example, you got engaged to Macs, although you knew he’d raped me!”

"And you got engaged to Scott!"

Not to be outdone, Sioned recalls, “And you got engaged to Scott, although he’d raped Macs!”   

Izzy emphasises, “The difference is that I finished with Scott the second I found out – while you . . .”

"Can't we change the subject?"

Mathew tries to bring an end to this argument, and suggests that they change the subject.   

"That was years ago!"

Sioned cannot understand why Izzy is bringing all this up now, as it was years ago.

"Macs, Hywel, Tyler – teachers take advantage!"

“And everyone is prepared to forget, although it happens time and time again!” rages Izzy, “Macs, Hywel, Tyler – teachers take advantage of young people and they’re never punished!”   What’s wrong with this place?”   

"She's under a lot of stress at the moment"

In a rage she marches out of the Deri, and Mathew explains that she is under a lot of stress at the moment.

"Sioned!"

Rhys has managed to stand up, and as he supports himself on the bar, calls to Sioned;  

Sioned looks disgusted

she looks at him with utter disgust.   

Colin arrives in time to miss Izzy 

Colin comes in with a bunch of flowers for his daughter, and wonders where the birthday girl is;  he receives no reply, 

Rhys looks as if he cannot control himself

but in the background, Rhys looks as if he might be about to throw up any second.

Gaynor has an angry visitor

Gaynor is sitting at home drinking wine when there is an angry knock at the door;  

"I don't want this card!"

Izzy throws down the card on the table, exclaiming, “I don’t want this card until you admit what happened!   Macs raped me, and you didn’t support me.”

"Do you want a glass of wine?"

Her mother’s offer of a glass of wine does nothing to defuse the situation, 

"I don't want you in my life!"

and Izzy goes on, “If you can’t accept that you let me down, I don’t want you in my life!”   

Izzy storms out of the house

With that, she marches out of the house.

"He's not interested in helping the community"

Siôn desperately pleads, “He’s offering more money, but he’s not interested in helping the community!”   Kelly complains that he is putting a lot of pressure on her, but he continues, “I can’t let Garry win – he’s a terrible person!   Please, Kelly,” 

"I'm begging you, Kelly!"

and he adopts a pose of supplication, which amuses Garry who has just come up the stairs.

"Oh, Siôn, this isn't a good look!"

“Oh, Siôn,” he says, “This isn’t a good look!”

“Don’t you ever knock – or what?” squeals Kelly, and Garry demands whether they have a deal.   

Kelly looks at one of them . . .

Siôn is still begging her to accept his offer, 

. . . and then at the other

and the episode ends with her anguish at being torn between the two potantial buyers.
