"We should be going to court!"

Kath arrives at Maes-y-Deri, looking for Mark;  Dani comes downstairs as Kath demands, “He was supposed to meet me in the Deri – we should be going to court!”   

"I know – I'm coming too"

Dani is quite aware of that, as she is coming, too, but there is no sign of Mark.

Kelly is smartly dressed 

At number 7, Kelly is smartly dressed for her first day as manager of Brynawelon.   

"OK, manager of Brynawelon"

She tries to compose herself;  “OK, manager of Brynawelon, you’ve got this!” 

Off she goes

and leaves the house rather excitedly

"Tom wants an indoor picnic for two"

In the deli, Eileen is packing Gaynor’s order and comments, “You’ve got company for dinner, then?” but is told that Tom wants an indoor picnic for two, so he can relax after a day full of meetings at work.

"I'm free on Saturday"

Cai comes in;  “I’ve been looking for you, Gaynor, I want to arrange installing that water feature for you – I’m free on Saturday.”   

"No, Tom will be home that day"

She replies that Tom will be home that day and she wants it to be a surprise.   

Cai looks concerned

He looks rather concerned about this.

"You've left the classroom, then?"

Eileen remarks, “It’s true that you’ve left the classroom, then?”   He tells her that geraniums do not answer back.   

"How about this afternoon?"

Gaynor suggests this afternoon, 

"It will take more than one afternoon"

but he points out that it will take more than one afternoon.   

"It's not a very big job"

She maintains that it is not a very big job;  he will be finished before Tom gets home and she will see him later.   

"What can I get you, Cai?"

He asks Eileen for a coffee.

Kelly introduces herself

Kelly comes out of the office at Brynawelon with a plate of custard creams for the residents;  “I’m Kelly, by the way – and I met some of you already on the induction day – 

"Iori, king of custard creams"

“haven’t I, Iori – king of custard creams?”

Dai walks in

He tells her that everyone was so glad to hear that she got the job and at that moment, 

"We need to behave with 'Nurse Ratched' here"

Dai comes in and advises them that they need to behave now that ‘Nurse Ratched’ has taken over.   [Apparently ‘Nurse Ratched’ is the head administrative nurse at the Salem State Hospital, a mental institution where she exercises near-absolute power over the patients' access to medications, privileges, and basic necessities such as food and toiletries.]

"I'll report you to Diane"

Kelly threatens to report him to Diane, at which he insists that he was not serious and that everything is tiptop;  “The food is nice, everything is clean, the activities . . . to be honest, I just put five stars in the questionnaire,” which Kelly is very pleased to hear.

“Right, dinner, then I’ll settle the bill and I’ll be gone,” Dai continues, “But I’ll be back as soon as I can, I promise you.”   

Kelly is given the day's post

The post is brought to Kelly and she goes to the office to deal with it, telling them to enjoy the custard creams.”

"Beef and Yorkshire pudding"

“Forget the custard cream creams,” Dai tells Iori, “Dinner is ready – beef and Yorkshire pudding.   I heard it’s trifle for pudding – I hope there’s sherry in it.”   They both hurry out of the room.

Mark is sleeping in the lock-up

Mark is asleep under a tarpaulin when a noise wakes him up;  

"What the hell are you doing here?"

Howard opens the lock-up door and demands, “What the hell are you doing here?   I’ve got to move all this stuff.   You’ve got less than an hour to get to court!”

"I'm not going to jail, Howard"

Mark has come to a decision;  “I’m not going to jail, Howard, right?   Four years of waking up every hour of the night worrying – sharing a cell with all kinds of people!”

"Are you going to live like a Kermit for ever?"

“Are you going to hide and live like a Kermit for ever?” Howard asks, “The pigs will come looking for you and the minute you’re caught, you’ll be charged with contempt of court.   

"Then you'll definitely go down"

“Then you’ll definitely go down for more than four years.”

"I'll go to Ireland – or Tenerife"

Mark proposes that he will go to Ireland or something – or to Tenerife to stay with his father, 

"There's no way out of this"

but Howard insists that there is no way out of this and he already knows that.   Mark has to confess that he does realise that.

Tom is home for a spot of lunch

Tom arrives home at Llwyncelyn and Gaynor comments that he is back early;  “Yes, I thought I’d pop home quickly for lunch,” he says, 

He sees a shadow outside

then sees the shadow of someone passing the kitchen window.   

"What the hell?"

“What the hell?” he shouts as he rushes out of the back door

Cai is in the garden

Cai is walking down the path with his shovel, when Tom comes running after him;  “Hey – what do you think you’re doing?”   

"What's wrong with you?"

Cai wonders what is wrong with him.

"Are you going to tell me what's going on?"

Tom yells at Gaynor, “Are you going to tell me what the hell’s going on?”

Eileen arrives at Kelly’s office, having been asked to come;  

"Thanks for coming so quickly"

“Thank you for coming so quickly,” says Kelly, “I’ll cut to the chase – I got an e-mail today, one of millions, from a food supplier.   There’s a severe lack of fresh produce at the moment, apparently.”

"That's a common problem"

Eileen agrees that it is a common problem.   

"Could Cae Glas supply fresh produce?"

“So how possible would it be for Cae Glas to offer fresh organic produce to Brynawelon?   Because our clients pay for high-quality produce.”

Eileen is prepared for this and as she takes the price list from her bag, 

"Cae Glas is highly regarded"

she confirms, “Cae Glas is highly regarded for the standards of our produce.”

"Discounts for local clients, or what?"

Kelly takes one look at the list and exclaims, “Wow!   Discounts for local clients, or what?”   She is told that the price is the same for everyone, as they have to pay for quality.   

"Sorry, we can't afford you"

“Sorry, we can’t afford you,” is Kelly’s verdict.

Eileen imagines that her residents would disagree, but Kelly laughs at the idea of raising the fees;  

"They're astronomical as they are!"

“They’re astronomical as they are – I’m not increasing them.”

"That was a waste of time, then"

Eileen regards her journey as a complete waste of time, wishing Kelly good luck with finding another supplier.

"Thank goodness Howard made you see sense"

Kath comes out of the Deri, speaking to Mark on the phone;  “Thank goodness that Howard has made you see sense.   We will see you there, yes?   

"Listen, everything will be fine"

“Listen, everything will be fine.”

She and Cassie head for the court, with Cassie promising to put her foot down if necessary.   

Dani follows them

Dani follows them out of the pub, but Jinx calls to her, asking if Mark has appeared.

"You don't look very happy about it"

She confirms that he has but does not sound very happy about it;  “I can’t help but think it’s all my fault.   

"He did what he did because of me"

“He did what he did because of me – he’s suffered enough – we’ve all suffered enough.”

"I don't want to see him go to jail any more than you"

Jinx does not want to see him go to jail any more than Dani does.   

"Are you coming, Dani?"

Then Kath shouts, “Dani, are you coming or what?”   

Jinx is left with his thoughts

Jinx is left standing in front of the Deri, deep in thought.

"Did you ask him to come here?"

In the garden of Llwyncelyn, Tom demands whether Gaynor asked Cai  to come there;  she denies it.

“What?   You wanted me to install the water feature!” Cai protests.   

"I wanted to support Cai's new enterprise"

Tom is adamant that he could have done that himself, but Gaynor argues that she wanted to support Cai’s new enterprise.

"We don't need anyone else pottering in the garden"

“You can have raised beds and a blinking duck pond if you want!” rages Tom, “We don’t need anyone else pottering in the garden!”

"If you want it done before next summer . . ."

Cai picks up his bag of tools and says that he will leave, commenting, “If you want it done before next summer, you know where I am.”   

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Tom takes exception to this, so Cai continues, 

"If you were prepared to do it . . ."

“Well, if you were prepared to do it, Gaynor wouldn’t have asked me in the first place.”

"What's your game?"

“What’s your game?” Tom shouts after him and is told that he was doing a favour for a friend.   “Gaynor doesn’t need a favour from anyone, especially you!” Tom shouts.   

"I'll remember that"

Cai promises that he will remember that.

"Oh, damn – the phone!"

Tom is about to give Gaynor a mouthful when his phone sounds, advising that he has a meeting;  

"We'll finish this later"

he promises Gaynor, “We’ll finish this later.”   

She is not looking forward to it

She does not look as if she is relishing the prospect.

They are back from court

As Howard is drinking at the bar, Kath, Cassie, Dani and Jinx come through the door;  

"Well?"

fortunately, they are followed by Mark, who is wreathed in smiles.   

"I'm a free man, thanks to Jinx!"

“I’m a free man, thanks to Jinx!” he exclaims, so Howard cannot understand what has happened.

"He said the attack was self-defence"

“He said that the attack was self defence,” but Jinx urges Mark to keep his voice down, 

"It was a 'white lie'"

explaining that it was a white lie.

“I said that we had argued that night and it was my fault – not that I hit him, but I exhibited aggressive behaviour.”   Kath describes Jinx as a great actor.

"I didn't want him to think I was a thug"

He adds that he did not want the judge to think that he was a thug;  “I wanted him to understand that Mark feared for his life and he defended himself.”

"You're a genius!"

Howard calls him a genius, but Jinx responds that he is definitely not that;  

"I've done some very silly things"

“I’ve done some very silly things in my life, but doing something worthwhile is a good feeling.”

“So you’re off the hook then?” Howard asks Mark and he answers that it looks like it.   

"Cwmderi wouldn't be the same without you"

Dani comments that Cwmderi would not be the same without Mark.

"He could have been in jail for years"

Kath is becoming very emotional, telling Howard that if he had not found Mark today, he could have been in jail for years.  

Mark hugs first Jinx . . . 

Mark gives Jinx, 

. . . then Howard

then Howard a hug.

"The only thing to do is drink Prosecco!"

Cassie maintains that the only thing to do on an occasion like this is to drink Prosecco;  Kath adds, “And you know what, boys?   

"For tonight only, it's on the house!"

“For tonight and tonight only, it’s on the house!”

"Mark 'Houdini' Jones!"

Howard proposes three cheers for Mark ‘Houdini’ Jones, then for Jinx the Genius, but Jinx  does not want to be called that.

Dai brings Kelly some custard creams

In Brynawelon, Dai brings Kelly some custard creams, and she admits that she has not had any lunch.   “You’re working too hard,” he tells her.

"I'm slow and I hater paperwork"

She admits that she is slow and hates paperwork;  “I hate totting up people’s bills and then chasing them for payment,” she says, handing Dai his bill.

"He's going to look at a home in Mynyddcerrig"

“Honestly, if you’d seen Iori’s face when he saw how much he owes this place.   He’s going to look at a home in Mynyddcerrig – it hasn’t got a good reputation – and Iori doesn’t have any family.”

"I've heard they make they make their own chips"

Dai replies, “I’ve heard the place in Mynyddcerrig makes its own chips – so it’s not all bad, is it?”

"Crikey Moses!"

Then he takes a look at his own bill, exclaiming, “Crikey Moses!   What’s this?   It’s well over £300!   

"That's twice what I paid last time!"

“That’s more than twice what I paid last time!”

"You've been having a lot of the extras, haven't you?"

“Yeah, the thing is, Dai, you’ve been having a lot of of the extras, haven’t you?   Newspapers, pedicures, supplementary activities – 

"Three-course meal every meal time"

“and you had a three course meal every meal time.   The thing is, it all adds up, unfortunately.”

"Those things were supposed be be included"

He argues that those things were supposed to be included like last time;  Kelly does not know, suspecting that the policy has changed, 

"I wasn't here at the time"

because she was not there at the time they offered unlimited desserts and foot-scrubs.

"It's daylight robbery!"

He describes it as nothing less than daylight robbery.   “All right, hanger-banger.   I’ll check the small print,” she offers.

"Small print – Nefi wen!"

“Small print – Nefi wen!   People here can’t see the large print, let alone the small print!” he protests, “It’s a way of conning old people!   Who owns the company?   Twm Siôn Cati?  [Twm Siôn Cati is a legendary Welsh folk hero often compared to Robin Hood, known for his cunning, trickery, and exploits as a highwayman who robbed the rich – although he is not notably recorded for giving to the poor.]

"Come on, Dai – it's my first day here"

Kelly pleads with him that it is her first day today, 

"It's my last day here, I can tell you!"

but he is adamant, “It’s my last day here, let me tell you!   I could have had a three week all-inclusive in Ibiza for this!”

"I think your club 18-30 days are well and truly over"

Kelly replies, “No offence, Dai, but I think your days of club 18-30 are well and truly over.” 

"You can send the bill to Diane!"

He snarls, “My days here are over, I can tell you!   You know those five stars I put on your questionnaire?   I’m taking those with me!   18-30, my foot – you can send the bill to Diane!”

Tom is keeping an eye on Gaynor

Gaynor is back out in the garden, with Tom as usual following her.   

"I hope you haven't been pottering"

“I hope you haven’t been pottering,” he tells her.   She was intending to do some weeding and insists that there is no rush with the water feature;  in fact, she is not sure why she wanted it in the first place.

"An excuse to invite Cai over, perhaps?"

“An excuse to invite Cai over, perhaps,” he sneers, 

"I don't want him near this place ever again"

“I told you that night, I don’t want him near this place ever again.   Look, it’s important that we’re honest with each other, isn’t it?   The truth is I don’t want you to spend time with Cai – is that clear?   

"Men like him only want one thing"

“I know men like him – they only want one thing and they don’t care who gets hurt.”

"I forgot my shovel"

At that moment, Cai is approaching down the path, announcing that he forgot his shovel.   “You’d better take it, then,” he is told.

"I hope you didn't ask him to come and get it"

“I hope you didn’t ask him to come and get the shovel,” says Tom 

"He'll never come here again"

and she protests that of course she did not.   She promises that Cai will never come there again.   Tom kisses her 

"Let's go and have a cup of tea"

and proposes that they go and have a cup of tea.

Kelly finds The Pizza Place closed

Kelly goes to the door of The Pizza Place, but finds it locked up;  as she walks away, disappointed, Jinx is approaching.   

"I thought you were supposed to open an hour ago"

“Finally!   I thought you were supposed to open an hour ago,” she complains.   

"I lost track of time"

He apologises that he was celebrating that Mark is free and lost track of time.   He has not yet had a chance to get changed.

Kelly dictates her very well-loaded pizza order

As they go inside Kelly orders, “Extra large meat feast pizza, with ham, chicken, spicy sausage, mushrooms, peppers, olives, loads of rocket, mozzarella and douse it with chilli oil!”   

"Do you want the kitchen sink as well?"

He enquires whether she wants the kitchen sink as well.

"I've had a tough day"

“No judgy judgy today, Jinx – I’ve had a tough day.”   

"Oh, you started at Brynawelon"

He realises that she started at Brynawelon today and asks how it went.   

"I started – and finished"

“Yes, I started – and finished – I’m quitting.”   

"You can't give up on your first day"

Jinx maintains that she cannot give up on her first day, 

"Why not?"

so she wants to know why not.

He argues that she has not given herself a chance yet;  

"Acting like the evil debt-collector?"

“A chance to do what, Jinx?   Sit in a teeny tiny office, sending emails, reading spreadsheets – and acting like the evil debt-collector?   No thanks.   I wanted the job because I love people, not because I love admin.”

"You know who would give their front teeth for the job?"

He comments, “Well, do you know who would give their front teeth for the job?”

"Let her have it!"

She snarls, “Do you know what?   Let Eleri have it – because, after all, she’s used to having my sloppy seconds, isn’t she?   I don’t know – I really did think this might be my calling.”

"At least, you've given it a try – ish!"

He points out that at least she has given it a try;  “Well, ‘ish’,” he adds.   

"Brynmor will be gutted"

She knows that Brynmor will be gutted that she is quitting, as he really did believe in her and she would not have got the job, were not for him.

"You don't understand"

“You don’t understand,” she continues, “It’s not that, Jinx.”   In that case, he wants to know what it is.   “I kissed him – Brynmor – big mistake, I know.”

"I didn't think there was anything going on"

Jinx did not think there was anything like that going on, but she insists that it was platonic – until she totally misread the signals and snogged him.

"I'm like a total idiot, Jinx"

“And he still loves his ex – I’m an idiot, Jinx, I’m like a total idiot.   Please don’t tell anyone, OK?   Because I really don’t need to add fuel to that fire.”

He assures her that he will not say a word, but did not think that Brynmor would be her type.

"Last e-mail of the day – resignation notice"

“Text me when my pizza’s ready, yeah?   I’m going to send the last email of the day – resignation notice.”

Gaynor is back out in the garden . . .

Gaynor sits down at the table in the garden with a cup of tea and a phone;  

. . . and Tom is nowhere to be seen

she looks around to make sure Tom is not there, then checks a message from Cai on her phone.

"Did Tom make the decision?"

“Listen, why do you want to forget about this water feature?   Did Tom make the decision?   I heard the way he spoke to you – and it’s not right, Gaynor.   

"I've never seen anyone so defensive of their garden"

“I’ve never seen anyone so defensive of their garden.”

Gaynor looks down at . . .

She gets up and turns to look at

the patch of garden, where, unknown to her, of course, Cheryl is buried.
