Gaynor dusts the piano

Gaynor is cleaning the piano when Tom comes into the house;  he says that he has a few things for her.   

"Water full of vitamins"

“Water full of vitamins and things that are good for the body.”

"I don't deserve such kindness"

She is not sure that she deserves such kindness, so he replies, “I hate to see you ill, 

"Even if it is your own fault"

“even if it is your own fault.”   She promises that she will not drink again for a while.

"Cai was a bad influence"

“Cai was a bad influence,” he informs her, 

"You don't have to worry about Cai"

but Gaynor assures him that he does not have to worry about Cai, who is just an old colleague.   

"Are you sure you didn't say anything stupid?"

“One who insisted on staying sober while he watched you drink like a fool.   Are you sure you didn’t say anything stupid?” Tom demands.

"I'd never put what we have at risk"

“No – I’d never put what we have at risk,” Gaynor tells him, but he doubts that she remembers everything.   “Look, Cai’s been through a very difficult time and he just wanted to talk to a friend.”

"Like you said last night . . ."

“Like you said last night, it might be an idea to stay away from him for a while,” Tom suggests, but she cannot remember saying that.   “Especially after he made you feel so uncomfortable,” he continues, 

"Did I?"

but again she cannot recall what he is talking about.

Eileen is moaning about Siôn 

As they arrive at the wine auction event, Eileen is complaining, “And he had the cheek to ask me what I had left him for dinner!”   

"Forget about Siôn"

Cassie hands her a glass of wine and tells her to forget about Siôn.   “Drinking in the afternoon – I feel guilty,” Eileen giggles.

"I know that voice"

Then they hear the unmistakable voice of Britt;  

"The Deri and Tamed were on the exclusive list?"

“Hey – the Deri and Tamed were on the exclusive list as well, were they?   

"I might as well make the most of the freebies!"

I don’t know who thought Beaujolais and chicken drumsticks would go together – but I thought I might as well make the most of the freebies!”

"We don't get this opportunity often"

Cassie hands her a glass of wine as well, commenting, “We don’t get this opportunity often, so cheers!”

Cai notices Gaynor int he deli

Cai has just ordered something from the deli, when he notices Gaynor sitting, toying with her food.   He asks if she is feeling a bit better today and explains that he has got himself something for dinner, as he is feeling too lazy to cook.

"I'm fine"

It is quite obvious that all is not well with Gaynor, although she maintains that she is fine.   

"Tom wasn't too happy to see me"

“I got the impression Tom wasn’t too happy to see me yesterday,” Cai goes on 

She springs to Tom's defence

and is told that he had had a long day, that is all.

He is spying on her once again

At that moment, Tom can be seen in the alley opposite, not being at work, as usual;  when he sees what is going on, he stops to watch.

"Tom and I understand each other"

Gaynor is once again insisting that she and Tom understand each other, 

"You seem very different, Gaynor"

but Cai remarks, “You seem very different to the Gaynor I used to know.”   She simply replies that everyone changes, but he would have expected her to be excited, now she is getting married.   

"Is there something else bothering you?"

“Is there something else bothering you – apart from this business with Cheryl?”   

"I've got a lot on at the moment . . ."

She gives the excuse that she is just tired, because she has a lot on at the moment;  

". . . but you don't have to worry about Tom"

“But you don’t have to worry about Tom – he’s looking after me.”

"Your order, Cai"

The waitress gives Cai his order, so he leaves, 

"I'll call in to discuss that water feature"

promising to call in soon to discuss installing that water feature.   

Tom makes himself scarce

Tom retreats out of sight as Cai leaves the deli, 

Gaynor is still very troubled

but Gaynor does not look any less troubled.

Mathew has two bags

Mathew comes into the farmhouse, carrying two bags, which he puts down on the table;  

"Mathew!"

Sioned enters the room and is surprised to see him.  

"Just something small for the children"

 “Just something small for the children – I’m so sorry for spoiling the party.”

"It's lucky they're too young to remember"

“It’s lucky that they’re too young to remember, isn’t it?”   

"I won't spoil anything ever again"

He promises that he will not let himself spoil anything for them ever again.   “Do you want to stay to see them opening these?” Sioned asks, but he thinks that he had better go – 

"Where will you go?"

so she wants to know where.

He does not know yet where he will go, 

"Running away is not the answer, Math"

but Sioned points out to him that running away is not the answer;  

"You think it's OK to walk out again?"

“Do you think it’s OK to just disappear, to walk out on us again?   Exactly like DJ did?”

"I don't want to argue with you"

Mathew does not want to argue with her;  “No – you want to run away from your problems!   What about your business and your employees, Math?   What about me?”

"This is not about you, Sioned"

He stresses that this is not about her;  

"No, it's about what's going on in your head!"

“No, it’s about you, what’s going on in your head and the fact you can’t run from it!” she exclaims.   Mathew wonders what she suggests and she makes it very clear, 

"Stay here!"

“That you stay here!”

"After everything I've done to you?"

He cannot understand;  “What?   After everything I’ve done to you?”   

"You have nowhere else to go"

She reminds him that he has nowhere else to go, 

"You're better off without me"

but he tells her, “Sioned, everything I touch turns sour – you’re better off without me.”

"Have you seen what's in that envelope?"

She enquires whether he has seen what is in that envelope;  “Perhaps you should,” she advises, 

"Your grandfather's will"

“It’s a will, Math – your grandfather’s.”   

Sioned walks out

With that she walks out of the room.

Siôn cannot find his truffle oil

At the wine auction, Eileen is talking on the phone, “Look, Siôn, if you can’t find your truffle oil, you’ll have to do without it.”   

"I've never come across someone so needy"

As she joins the others, she moans, “I’ve never come across someone so needy in my life!”

Britt agrees that Colin is no better;  “It feels like Groundhog Day in our house sometimes.”   

"It's as if they're both here with us"

Cassie grumbles that it feels like their partners are both here with them, but they are supposed to be enjoying their freedom today.

"We should have a Beaujolais night"

Then she turns to the leaflet she is perusing;  “I know we’re here to enjoy ourselves, but I think we should have a Beaujolais night in Cwmderi – we could make some money out of it, too.   We could buy the stock together, share the cost and then have a Beaujolais night in all of our businesses.”

"Do you think MFC is exclusive enough?"

Britt sneers, “Do you honestly think MFC is exclusive enough?”   Cassie emphasises that it is good to have a bit of a change, adding that if they do make a profit, they could go away for a weekend somewhere to have a real break.

"I fancy a weekend in Brighton

Eileen has always fancied having a weekend in Brighton, but Britt’s choice would be Blackpool.   

"Good afternoon, ladies"

As they are deliberating, a stranger approaches and wishes them good afternoon, introducing himself as Bedwyr, the owner of Gwinoedd Gwendraeth [Gwendraeth Wines]. 

"Thank you all for coming"

He thanks them for coming and they all introduce themselves;  he comments that his mother's name was Cassie.   

"Senior owner of Cae Glas"

Eileen describes herself as the senior owner of Cae Glas Produce.   

"Good luck with the bidding"

He announces that they will be starting the auction soon, wishing them good luck with the bidding.

"I'd put in a bid for him any time!"

“I’d put in a bid for him any time!” comments Cassie, “To the new enterprise, girls!”

"You had no right to go and see my mother!"

Mathew is angry;  “You had no right to go and see my mother!”   

"You disappeared off the face of the earth"

Sioned answers that he disappeared off the face of the Earth, 

"I have a right to disappear"

but he insists that he has a right to disappear he wants to.

“And I have a right to go looking for answers if I want to!” Sioned snarls.   

"They can't force me to take the money!"

Mathew is adamant that they cannot force him to take any money;  

"Perhaps you should know how much it is"

Sioned agrees with this but suggests that perhaps he should know how much he is inheriting.

"I don't want to know!"

“I don’t want to know!” he shouts, but she believes that he does, imagining that this might be his grandfather’s way of asking for some kind of forgiveness.   

"It's the least your grandfather owes you"

She urges him to take it, as it is the least his grandfather owes him.

“Do you know what this will is?   Salt in the wound!   He’d love to know that he still had this power over me – 

"I'm not going to let that happen!"

“well, I’m not going to let that happen, do you hear me?”   

He walks out on Sioned

He walks from the room.

Gaynor visits Hywel 

Gaynor pays a visit to Hywel, who says he was just about to make a cup of tea, but she does not answer.   He asks if everything is all right 

"Where do things stand with that piece of land?"

and she wants to know, “Where do things stand with that piece of land near the reservoir?”

"You'll need to sign a contract"

He answers that she will need to sign a contract, but he has not received it from the solicitor yet.   

"What if I wanted to pull out?"

“What would happen if I wanted to pull out?” she asks 

"What's wrong, Gaynor?"

and he can see that something is wrong.   

"It's just that weddings are expensive"

“It’s just that weddings are expensive, aren’t they?   I wanted to check my figures.”

"What's going on?"

He advises that she would lose the entire deposit and demands what is going on.   Gaynor replies that things are so complicated 

"I'm frightened – of everything!"

and she is frightened – of everything.   “I just go through my life making one mistake after another – trusting the wrong people – making a mess of everything!”

"No wonder you're questioning everything"

Hywel points out that she is about to get married and buy a new house – two of the five most stressful things in life;  “No wonder you’re questioning everything.   Look, you’re about to get a wonderful plot of land and you’re marrying a nice bloke.   

"You're a very lucky woman, Gaynor"

You’re a very lucky woman, Gaynor – this feeling will pass.”   She does not know about that.

"Look at her, flirting with him"

Britt and Cassie look on while Bedwyr is chatting up Eileen and they suspect her of flirting with him;  she is already drinking red wine.   

"I hope you've been behaving"

When Eileen rejoins them, they hope that she has been behaving, but she maintains that she has been getting all the info.

"He's a lovely man, to be fair"

“He’s a lovely man, to be fair – and he said his restaurants make enough profit on Beaujolais Day to pay his business rates for six months.”

"Forget Blackpool and Brighton, then"

Cassie predicts that, in that case, they can forget Blackpool and Brighton;  “It will be New York!”   

Now they are about to start the auction, so they agree that they will have a Beaujolais day in Cwmderi, as it will be the most exciting thing that has happened for months.   They will put in a joint bid, 

"New York, here we come!"

with Eileen commenting, “New York, here we come!”

Tom has a nose around

There is a knock at the door of Y Felin and Tom has come to see Cai;  “It’s quite a delicate matter – 

"I want your opinion on `Gaynor's drinking"

“I want your opinion on Gaynor’s drinking, as someone who knows her well.”

"She's free to drink as much as she wants"

As far as Cai is concerned, she is free to drink as much as she wants;  Tom agrees with that, 

"I'm worried she's drinking too much"

“But I’m just worried that she’s drinking too much.”

"Why is she drinking?"

Cai’s opinion is, “I would say the most important question is why is she drinking?   Organising a wedding puts you under a lot of strain – and she hasn’t had much luck in the past.   What do you think is worrying her?”

"Gaynor won't tell me anything"

Tom maintains that he has no idea, because Gaynor will not tell him anything.   

"I thought she might have mentioned something to you"

He just thought that she might have mentioned something to Cai, an old friend.

"It's not that kind of relationship"

He is assured by Cai that theirs is not that kind of relationship;  “I simply wanted advice on leaving teaching and starting a gardening company – and we had a bit of a laugh – so, sorry, you’ll have to work this out on your own.   

"If there's nothing else, I'm on my way out"

“Now, if there’s nothing else, I’m on my way out.”   

Tom does not have much choice

Tom takes the hint and leaves, 

"What is his game?"

with Cai suspicious of what he is up to.

"Lot number 12"

The auctioneer announces the next lot, number 12;  

The ladies are all poised

“16 cases of wonderful Beaujolais Nouveau hailing from the Domain du Gamay vineyard.   We’ll start the bidding at £500.”

The bidding is on the way up

The bidding gradually goes up in increments of £50 

Eileen bids £650 – than £850

and Eileen bids £650, but the bids gradually escalate, so she goes for £850, which makes Britt very nervous as they had already reached their maximum.

"We don't want to go home empty-handed, do we?"

“We don’t want to go home empty-handed, do we?” demands Eileen, and Cassie limits her to another £50 and that is all.

However, when the bidding reaches £1000 

Now Eileen is getting out of control . . .

Eileen’s hand shoots up again;  she justifies this by saying, “Just think about the Empire State Building and 42nd Street.”

. . . and they end up winning the auction . . .

There are no more bids and the lot is sold to the three of them, 

. . . which comes as rather a shock

at least one member of which does not look at all happy.   

"Bedwyr is waving at me!"

Britt notices that Bedwyr is waving at Eileen;  she cannot resist going over to him.

Tom pays for his drink

In the Deri, Tom pays for his drink and Hywel comes over to see him;  

"Is Gaynor really considering pulling out?"

“Is Gaynor really considering pulling out of the plot?”   

He pretends they have discussed it

This comes as a complete surprise to Tom, but he pretends that he has been discussing it with Gaynor.

Hywel does not want to waste his time

“Is she or not?   Because we’re wasting our time if she is,” Hywel goes on.

Tom replies that he is not sure where Gaynor’s head is at these days, to be honest;  

"Especially with her drinking too much"

“Especially with her drinking so much!”   Hywel knows that Gaynor and red wine are good friends.

“I think she may have been drinking a lot more than usual since the beginning of the year – this business of Cheryl leaving Cwmderi and stealing her money is eating her alive.”

"And that trouble with Angharad"

Hywel can’t believe that;  “And on top of that the trouble with Angharad.”   

This is news to Tom

This comes as news to Tom, so it is explained, “Her college friend conned her out of everything – it was a very difficult time for her – 

"The business with Cheryl has hit a raw nerve"

“I think the business with Cheryl may have hit a raw nerve.”   

"Thanks for sharing that info"

Tom thanks him for sharing that information.

"Nice to see you back, Mathew"

Cai comes in and goes over to where Mathew is sitting;  “Nice to see you back – I hear you’ve been busy in Ibiza.”   

"I'm not in the mood"

Mathew groans that he is not in the mood, 

"I just wanted a bit of advice"

but Cai just wanted a bit of advice about running a business.

"Why do women insist on doing it?"

“Why do women insist on doing it?   

". . . interfering and sticking their noses in?"

“Why do they insist on interfering and sticking their noses into things?” Mathew demands.   

"They may see things more clearly"

Cai imagines that it may be because women see things more clearly than they do – and they want to help.

"We all need someone to support us sometimes"

“Look, I have no idea what’s going on with you – the only thing I know is that we all need someone to support us sometimes, because this world is a lonely place when no-one gives a damn.   

"Look after yourself"

“Look after yourself.”

"Where have you been?"

Gaynor takes a book from the shelf and looks at it;  when Tom comes in, she asks where he has been and he lies that he forgot his phone at work and got sucked into a few things.   

"Have you done anything interesting?"

He is carrying a bottle of wine and asks if Gaynor has done anything interesting this afternoon.

“I went for a walk to Coed y Mynach,” she replies, and of course he wants to know if she saw anyone.   

"I'll go for a bath" 

“No-one important,” she says and proposes to go and have a bath.

"I was looking forward to sharing a bottle with you"

Tom was looking forward to watching a film, having a takeaway and a bottle of wine with her.   

"I want to try and look after myself"

Gaynor says that she is not in the mood;  she wants to try and look after herself before the wedding.

"You were happy enough to drink with Cai"

“You were happy enough to drink with Cai yesterday, but you refuse to have one or two with your fiancé?”   

"You don't need to be jealous"

She points out that Tom need not be jealous of Cai, so he stresses that he is not jealous, 

"You'd rather drink with another man"

merely telling the truth.   “You would rather drink with another man.”

She argues that is not true, so he sighs, “It must be me, then,” 

"All right – I'll have some wine"

so, as intended, she agrees that she will share the wine with him – but is going to have a bath first.

"It's going like a dream"

“I’ll order a takeaway, then, shall I?” he calls to her.

"Why are you being so nice to me?"

At Penrhewl, Mathew walks in and tells Sioned, “I don’t know why you’re still being so nice to me after everything – but you’re right.   

"I'm tired of running"

“I’m tired of running – so if the offer to stay still stands, I’d really appreciate that.”   

Sioned regards this as good news

Sioned is very pleased to hear it.

"Where is that foolish woman?"

Britt and Cassie are waiting to be joined by Eileen;  “Where is that foolish woman?” demands Cassie, so Britt suggest that perhaps they should go to look for her.

Something catches their eye

“Surely she wouldn’t have left without telling us,” Cassie goes on, 

Bedwyr and Eileen are going upstairs . . . 

but then they notice Bedwyr, with a bottle and two glasses, being followed upstairs by Eileen.   

. . . which causes some amazement

They are amazed by what is happening.
