"Are you working today?"

Jinx emerges from the alley and sees Kelly across the road;  “Ah, just the woman,” he says, “Are you working today?”   She can see that he obviously wants something.

"Why can't we just send you a selfie, like?"

“Could you come and sit for the picture in a minute?”

She protests, “Jinx, why can’t we just send you a selfie, like?”   He replies that they need to do these things properly – like Da Vinci used to do.

"This is the 21st century"

She laughingly reminds him that this is the 21st century, hoping that he does not want them all over there in one sitting again.

"The inspiration won't take hold"

He tries to explain to her, “Artists like me need to be able to concentrate – if the conditions aren't right, the inspiration [‘Awen’ in Welsh] won’t take hold.”

Eleri is just approaching across the road, as Kelly jokingly asks who is this ‘Awen’ he is talking about.

"Someone's having fun"

Eleri comments, “Someone’s having fun.”   Jinx tells her that he is just organising for ‘madame’ to sit for the painting later.

"What – on her own?"

“What – on her own?” sneers Eleri.

"See you in half an hour"

Kelly agrees to see him in half an hour, while Eleri goes into the deli, followed by Jinx.

"Have you changed the fat in the fryers?"

In MFC, Britt is going through the list she has made with Gwern;  “Have you changed the fat in the fryers?”   He confirms that he has and that he has emptied the food bin.   “Bleached the urinal?” is the next question.

"Why do I get all the disgusting jobs?"

He wonders why he is getting all the disgusting jobs

"Having a dog and barking yourself"

and is asked, “Have you ever heard of having a dog and barking yourself?   It’s something Gloria used to say, but don’t worry about that now.

"Scrub the curry saucepans"

Next you can scrub those curry saucepans while I do the accounts.”

"I have a GCSE in business . . ."

He volunteers to help her with that, reminding her that he has a GCSE in business;  “Not yet you haven’t,”

". . . well, I shall when I pass"

but he maintains he will do if he passes.   Britt continues that the first rule of business is to start from the bottom up,

"Scrub those saucepans"

“So scrub those saucepans until they’re sparkling!”

"Do you fancy the last sausage?"

As they eat out in the garden at Y Felin, Lleucu asks Siôn if he fancies the last sausage;  he maintains that he should have cooked for her, as she is leaving.

Old Misery is back again

At that moment, Val arrives once more;  “Is that sausage going spare?   I’m starving after that journey.”

"Have you packed yet?"

Then she demands whether Lleucu has packed yet and, when told that she has not,

"What have you been doing the last week?"

wants to know, “What have you been doing for the last week, then?”

"I want a family meeting this afternoon"

Lleucu announces, “I want a meeting with the whole family this afternoon – you’ll find out why later.”

Val is insistent that she should be told now, as they do not have time to delay.

“Please Gran – and I’d like Ffion to be there,” Lleucu adds.

"Iolo's away with Greta"

Siôn will be available, but Iolo is away with Greta.   Lleucu will sort out a sausage sandwich for her grandmother,

"Do you know what's going on?"

who demands, “Do you know what’s going on?”   Siôn has no idea.

"I haven't stuck with one hobby"

As she sits in number 9, Kelly says, “I don’t want to pay you too many compliments, like, but I do admire you for painting again – I haven’t stuck with one hobby in all my nearly 40 years.”

"How are you feeling about the big 4 - 0?"

He wonders how she is feeling about the big 4-0.

"I don't have much to celebrate"

“I’m dreading it – with everything, I don’t have much to celebrate – do you know what?   Can we just not talk about it, please?   I don’t want a fuss.”

"Not even any presents?"

“Not even any presents?” he enquires.

"If you want to wrap Brad Pitt up . . ."

She answers that if he wants to wrap Brad Pitt up, put a bow on him and send him to her, she will not say no.

“Anyway, enough about me – how about you?

"How are things going with luscious Leri?"

“How are things going with luscious Leri?”

"OK, I think"

He is under the impression that it is going well or, at least, better than last week.

He says that she is still under a bit of strain, with her father, who puts a lot of pressure on her;  “He doesn’t show her much respect and makes her feel second-best.”

"You leave your key in the door?"

Suddenly, the door opens and Eleri walks in, carrying two takeaway coffees;  “There are thieves about and you leave your key in the door!” she reprimands Jinx,

"Not interrupting, am I?"

“Not interrupting, am I?”

Jinx was under the impression that she was busy this morning;  “Not too busy to see how you’re getting on,” she replies,

She gives a coffee to Jinx . . ."

“And I’ve brought the lattés as a bribe to see the masterpiece.”

. . . but, very pointedly, not to Kelly

Kelly naturally assumes that one of the coffees is for her, but is told by Eleri, “Sorry, it’s not.”

She looks at the current state of the artwork

“Right, you can take a look, but it’s a work in progress,” he warns.

"If you've made me look like a 'minger' . . ."

“I swear, Jinx, if you’ve made me look like a ‘minger’, you’re dead!” Kelly snarls as Eleri looks at it.

Ffion has an unwelcome visitor

Ffion is out in the garden at Deri Fawr, when she is dismayed to see her  mother, Val, approaching;

"You've landed on your feet here, haven't you?"

“You’ve landed on your feet here, haven’t you?” she remarks.

"You didn't come near me in hospital"

Ffion grumbles that she heard that her mother was back and it is explained that things are not right with Lleucs.   “Ironic – you didn’t come near me when I was in hospital.”

"Lleucu is a child who needs to be looked after"

Val angrily points out that Ffion is a grown woman, but Lleucu is a child – a child who needs someone to look after her better than Ffion did.

"I'm not her mother!"

“I don’t know why you’re looking at me – I’m not her mother!” Ffion growls.

"I'll look after Lleucu just fine"

Val points out that she is there now and she will look after Lleucu just fine.

"You've come to get some home help?"

“So that’s what you want her to come back – to have some home help.”

“Oh, you can be such a cow!” her mother exclaims,

"Come over to Y Felin at 2 o'clock"

“Come over to Y Felin at 2 o’clock – Lleucu has organised some family meeting.”

Tom is here yet again

Meanwhile Tom is approaching.

"I've got something on this afternoon"

Ffion maintains that she has something on this afternoon and cannot be there, so she is told to cancel it.

"So you're another Gog!"

Then Val wants to know who is the visitor, realising that he is another ‘Gog’.   Ffion points out that he is Gaynor’s partner, or, at least, they have just got engaged.

She tells her mother that she will have to excuse them as they have an important meeting.

"Who was that?"

When Tom enquires who that was, Ffion replies, “No-one important.”

He wants to know whether she has been to the police

"I'm on my way to the police now"

she confirms that she is on her way now,

"You should read this first"

but he advises her to read the paper he has in his hand first.

"Have you finished with that, Huw?"

Eleri is still hanging around number 9 and asks, “Have you finished with that, Huw?” picking up his cup.

"Huw?"

This amuses Kelly;  “Huw?” and she is told that they do not use the name Jinx any more, as it is childish.

"Ooh – get her!"

Kelly laughs and Jinx protests that she has moved.

"The light was perfect, Kelly"

He maintains that the light was perfect where she was sitting.

"I'm getting old . . ."

She advises that he will probably need some soft focus because she is getting old.

This gives Jinx an opportunity to explain to Eleri that Kelly is about to turn 40;  “She doesn’t look it, does she?”

". . . I feel like an old lady sometimes"

Kelly admits that she feels like an old lady sometimes and is really sorry that she has to go now.

"You have been here for some time"

Eleri stresses that she has been there for some time.

"I'll get back to you . . ."

Kelly will get back to him.

Jinx would like her to ask Ieuan to come and sit with for him tonight, but is reminded by Eleri that they will be going out tonight.   He will organise some other time.

". . . so long – Huw!"

As she leaves, Kelly smiles broadly, “So long – Huw!”

"Where did you get this?"

Ffion reads the document that she has been given as Tom comments, “I won’t say I told you so, but . . .”   she wonders where he got the report

"One of the scientists from Quantum Hydro Works"

and it is explained, “One of the scientists at Quantum Hydro Works – he’s an old friend –

"It could cost us our jobs"

“don’t tell anyone you’ve seen it – it could cost us our jobs.

“But when I read it, I couldn’t let you go to the police – because this proves that you’ve just been unlucky.   There are unusually high levels of arsenic trioxide in the soil – I don’t know why.   But that’s how it got into your system – when you were digging in it.   I’m sure there must be some in me as well.”

"So no-one tried to poison me?"

Once again, Ffion has been comprehensively ‘taken in’ by him;  “So no one tried to poison me?”   He jokingly says that he did suspect Jinx.

"You've taken a huge risk"

“Thank you – you’ve taken a huge risk, showing me this,” she continues, but he describes the two of them as ‘mates’,

"Right, I'd better go"

then adds that he had better go before he gets caught playing truant.

He makes sure to take the 'report' with him

He retrieves the report and Ffion thanks him again;

"I'd do anything for you"

“I’d do anything for you,”

A kiss is imminent . . .

and they are about to kiss when Val unexpectedly returns.

. . . but then Val is back

“I’ve forgotten my . . .” she begins, then, when she sees what they are doing,

"I thought you were engaged to Gaynor!"

adds, “I thought you were engaged to Gaynor!”   Ffion wants to know why she is back

She forgot her glasses

and she says that she forgot her glasses.   “You never change!” she angrily tells Ffion, then turns to Tom;

"Keep away from this one!"

“A word of advice – keep away from this one!

Gwern has been working

Gwern has been mopping the floor when Britt returns to MFC;

"What's that doing here?"

she notices a bicycle and wants to know what it is doing there.

"It's a money-spinner!"

“It’s a money- spinner,” he tells her, “Please don’t be angry –

He has been looking at the accounts

“I happened to see your accounts earlier.   I wasn’t nosing, I swear, so I know this place has been making a loss over the last three months.”

"Don't tell Colin – or anyone else!"

Britt is very anxious that she should not tell Colin or anyone else and he promises not to do so.   “What right did you have to go through my laptop like that?”

"It was open on the counter"

He points out that it was open on the counter, but she maintains that some things are private;

"Perhaps letting you work here was a mistake"

“Perhaps letting you work here was a mistake – I need someone I can trust!”

"We could start a delivery service . . ."

Gwern assures her that he is not going to tell anyone and that he is on her side;  “That’s why I want to help you with this,” he says, pointing to the bike.   “We could use it to start a delivery service –

". . . a sort of Deri-farw"

“a sort of ‘Deri-farw[which is pronounced in Welsh something like the name ‘Deliveroo’] – so what do you think?”

The meeting begins . . .

In the garden at Y Felin, the family meeting is convened

. . . with Iolo's apologies

and Iolo sends his regards.   “It’s nice for some,” snorts Val,

"If playing on a beach is more important"

“But if playing on a beach is more important than Lleucu’s future . . .”

"I'm not coming back with you!"

There Lleucu interrupts, “I’m not coming back with you!”

"We agreed!"

Her grandmother points out that they have agreed, but Lleucu reminds her, “You agreed!

"No-one asked what I want"

No-one asked me what I want – that’s why I want a meeting.”

"Let her have her say"

Ffion angrily tells her mother to let Lleucu say what she has to say;  “She’s old enough to know what’s best for her.”

"What do you know – you've been in a coma!"

Val’s callous response is, “What do you know?   You’ve been in a coma.”   Lleucu agrees that Ffion is right – she cannot be forced to go.

Val has been organising everything and has had a chat with the head of the sixth form at the local school, so she can resit the year in September;

"You won't get away with leaving school"

“You won’t get away with leaving school like you did here!”   Lleucu is adamant that she is not leaving Cwmderi, because she is the only family her Dad has here.

"He'll need me to look after him"

“He’ll need me to look after him when he comes home from hospital,”

"Iolo and I will be here"

but Siôn says that he and Iolo will be there.

"I can't just pack up and leave"

“I’m his daughter – I can’t just pack up and leave.”   Val disagrees, insisting that she can, as she is 17.

Ffion agrees that her grandmother is right, wondering if her father is the only reason she is staying;  she ought to go back up north.

"We can charge for delivery"

Gwern is still working on Britt;  “The bike won’t cost anything to run and we can charge for delivery – kerching!

"My post has had 57 'likes' already"

“My post has had 57 likes already.”

"Look, I'm the boss here!"

Britt is outraged that he has done all of this without talking to her first, stressing that she is the boss.   He argues, “You have to do something to improve your takings, Auntie Britt.”

"I will do something . . ."

She agrees that she will and immediately goes into the back room, reappearing with the chicken outfit which has been used in the past.

". . . here, put this on!"

She tells him to put it on, but he is not keen to be dressed up like that;  she also wants him to hand out flyers to passers-by.

"A small Pinot, Ler?"

Eleri and Kelly are both at the bar in the Deri;  “A small Pinot, Ler?” Kelly asks.

"The name is Eleri"

She is told that the name is Eleri and that she can buy her own wine.

"I'll get more wine"

The barman will go and get more wine.

Kelly chuckles to herself

Kelly is looking exceedingly pleased with herself and chuckles;

"What's that about?"

Eleri wonders what it is all about.

"You don't have to worry about Jinx and me"

She is informed, “You don’t need to worry, you know about Jinx and me.”

"Why should I be worried?"

“Why would I be worried?   No offence, but we’re not quite . . . are we?”

"So you're not jealous, then?"

“So you’re not jealous, then?” Kelly continues, and Eleri considers that to be quite ridiculous.   “That’s not why you came over – to check on us?”   She is told not to flatter herself.

"He's a top bloke!"

“Jinx and I are ancient history – all right?   You can trust him 100% – he’s a top bloke – and he adores you.

"Don't worry that you're second-best"

“Please don’t worry that you’re second-best or whatever.”

"Why would I worry about that?"

“Why would I worry about being second-best?” Eleri demands.

"Jinx said your Dad is a pain in the proverbial"

Kelly answers that he said she was feeling a little insecure;  “And that your dad is a pain in the proverbial.   Just, you know, that you get the menial . . . look, I’ve been treated that way for years, right?

"Rise above it"

“My advice to you is rise above it –

Eleri attempts to retain her 'aloof' look

“and let me buy you a drink, Eleri.”

"He won't be home until he's ready"

Siôn appreciates that Lleucu is worried about her father, “But he won’t be home until he’s ready.”

"Remember what happened last time"

Lleucu recalls what happened last time, but is told that they will take better care of him this time,

"We'll have to learn to trust him again"

“When he comes out, you’ll have to . . . well, we’ll all have to, learn to trust him again.”

Lleucu does not know if she can do that, but Siôn insists that she does not have a choice, because that will give him confidence, which he needs in order to move forward.

"It will be easier from North Wales"

Val maintains that would be easier from North Wales.

"What if he thinks I'm abandoning him?"

“What if he thinks that I’m abandoning him?” Lleucu asks,

"I'm sure he won't do that"

but Ffion is sure that he will not do that.

“Look, neither Siôn or I want to see you go, do we, Siôn?   But you have to live your life – do what’s right for you?”

"I would feel so guilty"

Lleucu remembers that her father did say he wants her to enjoy herself, but she would feel so guilty for leaving.

"We can get here in three hours"

Val insists that they can get down to Cwmderi in three hours if something happens,

"I can bring him to see you at weekends"

while Siôn could bring him to see them at weekends.   He agrees that Ffion is right, that she needs to live her life.

"I'll come back up north then Gran . . ."

Lleucu reaches the decision, “I’ll come back up north then, Gran,”

Val is ready to start packing

so Val is all ready to start the packing, but there is more to come.

". . . but not now"

“But not now – I can’t leave Dad and disappear without saying anything – so I’m staying here until I can tell him myself.”

"You can phone him from the A470"

Val recommends that she can phone him on the way up the A470;

"I'll tell him in a couple of weeks"

“No, he’s coming out for a day again in a couple of weeks.   I’ll tell him then, face-to-face, and not a second earlier!” emphasises Lleucu

"Starting a delivery service, then?"

With the advertising chicken outside the door, Tom is inside MFC, telling Britt that he was reading online she is starting a delivery service.

"It's time to move with the age . . ."

He reckons that is what this place needs;  “It’s time for the village to move with the age –

". . . although I'd change the name"

mind you, I’d change the name of the service – don’t you think the name ‘Deri-farw’ will put people off?   A circumflex is important.”

Britt shouts for Gwern

Britt immediately shouts to Gwern;  “The Deri-farw service?

"You forgot the circumflex!"

“You forgot the circumflex – take it down now!”   [Siôn White is usually involved with this sort of ‘hair-splitting’, but apparently Deri-Farw means ‘Dead Oak, whereas the correct form is ‘Deri-Farŵ’, pronounced ‘Derivaroo’]

Jinx is ready for their night out

Eleri is drinking a glass of wine at Cysgod y Glyn when Jinx rushes in and thought that she would have changed by now,

"I'm not coming . . ."

but she announces that she is not coming.   “But I’ve booked us a table.”

". . . tonight or any other night . . ."

“I’m not coming tonight or any other night, she informs him,

". . . because I can't trust you!"

“Because I can’t trust you – Kelly has made that clear.   What you said, Huw – the things about me and Dad – that was between you and me.   The first chance you get, you run off and blab to your ex!”

"I only mentioned it in passing"

He explains that was not what happened;  he only mentioned it in passing.

"Go!   I have nothing to say!"

“Well, you shouldn’t – now, go!   I have nothing to say.”

"You're overreacting"

He accuses her of overreacting;  he only told Kelly because he was worried about her;

"Why do you always punish yourself?"

“Why do you always punish yourself the moment you find happiness?” he demands,

"I'm not against you – I'm not Brynmor!"

“I’m not against you – I’m not Brynmor!”
