Diane walks into the hospital . . .

Diane walks anxiously into the hospital 

. . . and heads towards Dai

and it is reassuring for us to discover that Dai lives on to fight another day, having apparently sustained only a bang to the head.

"The doctor said you've been lucky"

She is pleased to see him and tells him that the doctor said he has been lucky.   

Dais is as irascible as usual

“Lucky?   I’d like to know what I’d be like if I was unlucky,” he moans.

"I was worried I'd never see you again"

Diane angrily tells him not to joke about this;  “I’ve been worried I’d never see you again.   

"With DJ and Jason not here . . ."

“With Jason and DJ not here, Anita the way she is and Emma in Australia . . .”

"If you're here to make me feel better . . ."

“Whoa, now,” Dai exclaims, “If you’re here to make me feel better, you’re not doing a good job!”   

"You're luck to be alive, Dai"

She wonders what he expects, as he is lucky to be alive.

Jinx notices Eleri

Jinx is outside the pizza place when he notices Eleri who is approaching;  

"I need five pizzas – for the price of three"

“I need five pizzas,” she instructs him, “For the price of three.”   

"How about five for the price of five?"

Jinx alternatively suggests five pizzas for the price of five, wondering if that is a problem, but she ignores him, continuing, “Dad’s meeting Quantum Hydro Works big wigs in the office – 

"I've had the honour of sorting the catering"

“and I’ve had the honour of sorting the catering.”

"That's daylight robbery!"

He points out that five for the price of three is daylight robbery;  she asks whether he intends to call the police.   

"I don't know where I stand with you"

Jinx admits, “I was wrong – I just don’t know where I stand with you sometimes.   Have you heard of ‘Burrata cheese’?”  [an Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream]

"Not patronising me, are you?"

She sneers that she hopes he is not patronising her, so he explains that he has some new stock and was going to give her some for free.   “And that makes up for insulting me, does it?   Five pizzas for the price of one!”

"You can have them free"

For some unknown reason, now he offers her the five completely free 

Eleri is very smug

and she looks very pleased with her negotiating skills.

"The two I still like, is it?"

At Dai’s bedside, Diane says that some of the villages send their regards;  “The two I still like, is it?” he replies 

"You didn't get anything for your personality, then?"

and she can see that he did not get anything from the doctor for his personality.   

"Would you want me any other way, Diane?"

“Would you want me any other way, Diane?” he asks.

"I'd rather have you here than not at all"

She is not sure about that, “But I’d rather have you here as you are than not at all.”  

"I'm not going anywhere"

Dai assures her that he is not going anywhere, so she is adamant that they have to start looking forward to what they need at Bryntirion;  “Handrails and a stair lift.”

"Hold the boat!"

“Hold the boat – it was an accident – I haven’t aged 20 years overnight!” he protests.   

"It will take some time to get over this "

Diane is adamant that it will take some time to get over this and they are not talking about major changes.

"No!   There's such  thing as pride!"

Now Dai is becoming angry;  “The answer is no – I don’t care if you’re on about changing my pants – this walking stick is bad enough!   There's such a thing as pride!”

"And sometimes people have to swallow their pride"

She points out that sometimes people have to swallow their pride.   

"I'm not going to change – even for you!"

However, he is insistent, “I’m not going to change for anyone, even you!”

"I'll go home and pack your bag, then"

She decides that, in that case, she will have to go home and pack his bag;  “If you won’t adapt Bryntirion, you’ll have to move back to the bungalow on your own.”   It is obvious that Dai does not relish this idea.

Kylie looks at a photo

Kylie picks up the photo of herself with Britt and Colin as Britt comes into the room, 

"I've packed as much as I can"

having packed as much as she can.   She has left Kylie’s wash bag and things, also wanting to give her something as a farewell present.

"I want you to have this"

She takes off the pendant that she is wearing and gives it to Kylie;  

"Gloria gave it to me"

“Gloria gave it to me.”

"Oh, you've given it to her"

Colin comes upstairs and finds that the pendant has already been given to Kylie;  he announces that today is not going to be easy, 

"The party will be fun"

but the party will be fun.

Kylie, knew nothing about any party, but Britt insists that they are not going to sit there with long faces on her last day.   

"Colin's going to make your favourite"

“Gwern’s on his way over and Colin is going to make your favourite.”

"Samosas?   No way!"

“Samosas?   No way!” says Kylie, excitedly and he confirms that is what he will do.   

"Lleucu's managing the shop today"

He explains that Lleucu is managing the shop today, so they have all day.

Eleri enters the office . . .

Eleri comes into the repurposed office, carrying the pizzas, but discovers to her disgust a note on the desk, 

. . . to find a note . . .

‘Change of plans – lunch in the Glyndwr’, 

. . . which displeases her

and looks decidedly unhappy.

Gwern arrives

Gwern arrives at the MFC flat and is told by Britt, “It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?   

"It feels like Kylie's just arrived"

“It feels like Kylie’s just arrived.”   

"Have we got enough samosas?"

Colin is panicking that they do not have enough Samosas.   As he and Britt hurry into the kitchen to find some squash, 

Kylie and Gwern are amused

Kylie and Gwern look at each other and laugh.

"Look after Britt, will you?"

“Look after Britt, will you?” she asks and Gwern tells her not to worry about that, adding that it will be strange without her around.   

"We can still text"

She reminds him, “I’m not moving to the other side of the world – we can still text,” which she says will be nice.

"Great party, isn't it?"

“It’s a great party isn’t it?” he sarcastically adds and Kylie describes it as ‘banging’.

Eleri is eating pizza

Eleri is sitting in the Quantum Hydro Works office with her feet up on the table, despondently eating pizza, 

"I forgot the burrata"

when Jinx comes in, having forgotten to give her the Burrata.

She informs him, “There’s no point – Dad and his cronies have gone to the Glyndwr.”   

"I didn't think you ate pizza"

Jinx did not think that she ate pizza 

"I don't"

and she agrees, “I don’t,” as she tosses a piece back into the box.

"I want to invite you for dinner"

“Well, don’t eat too much, because I want to invite you for dinner,” he continues, 

"I've got something on tonight"

but she immediately says that she has something on tonight, so he changes the invitation to, “An early dinner – just a catch-up, OK.   We need to talk, now that we’re talking again – 

"I'll cook your favourite food"

“I’ll cook your favourite food – whatever it is.”

"Turbot"

She comes up with the most obscure thing that she can think of at the moment;  “Turbot,” which he realises is expensive.   “Yes, it is – can you cook it at short notice with some ‘Hispi’ cabbage?   I’ll see you at five.”   He will do his best to oblige and she tells him to go.

Sion is droning on to Iolo

At Y Felin, Siôn is regaling Iolo with, “You know what?   

"Agerfarch!"

“Gerallt Pennant taught me a historic word for a steam engine – ‘Agerfarch’!”  [does that not actually mean ‘steamboat’?]

Iolo is saved by a knock at the door

He also shows some photos on his phone which include ‘Maggi Noggi’;  Iolo is very pleased that there is a knock at the door to save him from this;  “A successful Eisteddfod, Dad – well done!” he says, as he goes to answer it.

Val bursts in

As soon as he does so, the door bursts open and in walks Val, mother of Ffion and grandmother of Lleucu;  

"Where's Lleucu?"

“Where’s Lleucu?” she demands.

At least Colin is enjoying himself

At the party in the MFC flat, Colin is cavorting with a mop and singing, which does not appear to impress Kylie and Gwern.   

♫"Don't forget about us"♫

♫“And when you’re a big star, don’t forget about us!”♫ sings Colin.

"Cringe, Col"

Gwern’s reaction is, “Cringe, Col!” and Kylie tells them that she will never forget about them, 

Britt is becoming emotional

which makes Britt rather emotional.   

"I'll go and check the bag now"

She will go and check the bag now 

"Then I'll take her over to Mali"

and then Colin will take her over to Mali, the social worker.

"The cake is still in the fridge!"

Britt suddenly realises that the cake is still in the fridge at MFC;  “Go and get it!” she orders Colin.   

"Don't panic, Auntie Britt!"

Gwern tells her not to panic.

"She's been crying down the phone to me"

Val angrily points out to Siôn and Iolo, “She’s been crying down the phone to me because she’s not happy.”   

"She didn't say anything to me"

The fact that she has said nothing to Siôn makes no difference to her, as she rants on, 

"He's zonked out on tablets"

“And why wouldn’t she miss North Wales after trekking all the way to Barry to make that father of hers happy?   And he’s zonked out on tablets – he had more interest in the seagulls than her!”

"You're going too far now!"

Iolo protests that she is going too far now;  “Too far?   I’ve hardly started!” she snarls.   Siôn did think that Lleucu looked a bit ‘down’ this morning and wants to know what exactly she has said.

“That she’s not happy!”   

"It may be because of the stalking"

Siôn wonders if it is because of the stalking, but Iolo consider it unwise to mention that.  

"She's being stalked?"

“She’s being stalked?” rages Val, but it is pointed out that she was the one who was stalking Dani.   

"That can't be true!"

Val will not accept that to be true, but Siôn enlightens her that things almost got out of control;  “And with that and deciding to reset the sixth form year . . .” he goes on.

“Is there any sort of authority in this house?” Val wants to know, “No wonder she phoned me in tears!”   

"This is not helping, Dad"

Iolo cannot see how this is helping, 

"Val has a right to know"

but Siôn insists that Val has a right to know, especially after travelling so far.

"I want to know absolutely everything"

“I want to know everything – absolutely everything!” she shouts.

"It's a difficult day for all of us"

Gwern follows Colin to MFC and is told that today is a difficult day for them all, which is what is concerning Gwern.   

"Britt seems a bit emotional"

“You know when Britt was ill, when I was young – I don’t know, but she seems a bit emotional.”

Colin, tells him not to worry about things like that as it is old news;  “There’s no doubt that losing Kylie will hit both of us, but we are strong enough to get over it.   Honestly, Gwern, Britt will be fine in no time.   

"Better hurry with this cake!"

“Right, we better hurry with this cake or it will be time for Kylie to leave.”

Jinx has a nasty surprise

Jinx opens the oven and, as is often the case with Cwmderi’s ovens, finds that the turbot is in a somewhat overdone condition, then has to go and answer the door to Eleri, 

"That's an interesting smell"

who remarks, “That’s an interesting smell.”

“Don’t,” he tells her, “Sit down.”   

She blows out the candle

She blows out the candle on the table, informing him that this is not a date.   

"I think I've wasted a lot of money

He produces the burnt offering, with the comment, “I think I’ve wasted a lot of money and your time.”

"I've got cold pizza in the fridge"

She immediately decides to go home, as she has cold pizza in the fridge, but he pleads with her not to go;  “There are things to say – please.”

She will allow him 30 minutes 

Her response is to take out her phone and set the timer to 30 minutes;  “Right, what have you got to say?”

"You must love me or something"

Dai is lying disconsolately in his hospital bed, then notices that Diane has returned;  “You must love me or something,” he comments and she agrees that she does.   

"That's why I don't want to lose you"

That is why she wants him around for as long as possible – she does not want to lose him.

"You're not going to start on that bungalow business?"

“Right, I hope you’re not going to start on that bungalow business again,” he groans, 

"Yes, I am . . ."

but she announces that is exactly what she intends to do.

". . . and you're going to listen to me this time"

“And you’re going to listen to me this time,” she adds, “Do you realise how much I worry about you every time you go out for a walk?   That you’re going to fall – it was hard enough getting you on that scooter in the first place.”

"And we all know what happened then!"

“And we all know what happened then!” he snarls.

"I'm not going to sit back and watch"

“I’m not going to sit back and watch you struggle up and down those stairs every morning and every night, just because you’re too proud to accept help.   Have you ever considered what I’d do if I lost you?”   

"Don't you worry about me"

Dai is confident that she does not need to worry about him, but she is serious;  “If you’re not going to agree, you’ll have to go back to the bungalow, no matter how much pain it will cause me.”

"Fine – OK!"

Realising that this is an argument that he will not win, he answers, “Fine – OK.   I just don’t want you to think that you’re married to someone who’s past it!   

"It really played on my mind"

“Goodness me, when I sat on that mobility scooter, it really played on my mind.   I’d think about what I was like in my 30s, running around the rugby field, fit as a ferret, as they say.   And look at me now!   

"The man who needs help to change his socks!"

“I just imagined people looking at me and me shouting out, “Oh, here I am, Dai Sgaffalde – the man who needs help to change his socks now!

"You can have as many stairlifts and handrails as you want"

“Listen, if it makes you feel better, you can have as many stair lifts and handrails as you want, OK?   As long as you don’t see me as a liability who keeps dragging you down all the time.”

"I would never think that"

Diane assures him that she would never think that, 

"I don't need a commode – not yet anyway"

but he does insist, “Mind you, I don’t need a commode!   Not yet, anyway.”

Kylie is about to leave

Britt is tearfully hugging Kylie, then hands her a chunk of the cake.   “Are you sure you don’t want to come with us?” asks Colin.

"Thank you for everything"

“Thank you for everything,” says Kylie, but Britt maintains that they should be thanking her for making the place so happy.   

They leave the flat . . .

They leave the flat, but Gwern comes back;  

. . . but Gwern brings back the MFC keys . . .

“Auntie Britt, before I forget, Col left the keys to MFC,” 

. . . and gives them to Britt 

and he hands them to her.

He goes on to say that he can come back another time if it is not convenient at the moment, but she is anxious to hear what he has to say.   

"Any chance of a couple of shifts?"

“Is there any chance of a couple of shifts at MFC?   I want to take my mind off the GCSE results.”   

"I'll look after you, Gwern"

She assures him that she will look after him, but when he leaves again, she is still very emotional.

Lleucu has an unpleasant shock

Lleucu arrives back at Y Felin and is very shocked to see her grandmother sitting there.   

"Here she is at last!"

“Here she is at last – your ears must be burning,” says Val, “Sit down.”

"You didn't have to come all this way"

“Gran, you didn’t have to come all this way – I knew I shouldn’t have phoned you,” gasps Lleucu.   

"I'm glad I did"

Her grandmother is glad that she did, because she has heard some worrying things.   

"You've told her!"

She realises that Siôn and Iolo have told her, 

Iolo denies that he did

but Iolo is quick to point out that he did not says anything.

Siôn maintains, “It was only right that she found out,” 

"It was not your decision to make"

but Lleucu disagrees most strongly with that, arguing that it was not his decision to make.

Val’s mind is made up;  “I’m glad Siôn told me, because it makes my decision a lot easier – 

"You're coming back to North Wales with me"

“you’re coming back to North Wales with me – you don’t belong here – start packing, or it will be dark.”

"Say something, Dad"

Iolo attempts to defuse the situation and urges his father to say something;  

"It may be for the best"

however all Siôn will say is that it might be for the best.

"So you do think I'm in the way"

“So you do think that I’m in the way – I don’t want to leave – that phone call was a moment of weakness,” Lleucu insists.

"As Siôn said, we're thinking of you" 

Val is having none of that;  “As Siôn said, we are thinking of you, Lleucu.”   

"You two actually agree on something?"

Iolo is amazed and comments that he never thought he would see the day when the two of them would agree on anything.

"Can I at least say goodbye to people?"

Lleucu makes it quite plain, “I don’t want to leave, Gran.   Can I at least say goodbye to people?   Finish my shifts in the shop?   I can’t just leave today.”

"I'll come back down next week"

Val considers that would be a waste of petrol, but finally gives in;  “I’ll come back down next week – and make sure you’re ready to leave, do you understand?”

Very expensive burnt offering

We have a close-up view of the incinerated turbot 

"There was a lot going on at the time"

as Jinx is telling Eleri, “And today, with a clear head, it was ridiculous to think for a second that you attacked me, OK?   But there was a lot going on at the time.”

"Your time is up"

Suddenly Eleri’s phone timer sounds at the end of his allotted period, but he urges her to wait.   She points out that he has had his time.   He argues that he is trying his best here.

"Do you understand how much you hurt me?"

“Do you understand how much you hurt me?” she demands and he answers that of course he does – that is why he is doing his best now to make things right between them.

"I think you like me too – do you?"

“I really like you, Eleri,” he stresses, “And I think you like me, too – do you?”

"Where were you until today, then?"

“Where were you until today, then?” she asks;  he says that he kept away because he did not think that she wanted to talk to him.

"I've been to flippin' Carmarthen"

“But after talking this morning, you’ve had free pizzas – I’ve been to flippin’ Carmarthen to get a turbot 

"What do I have to do for you to forgive me?"

“and I’m even willing to get down on my knees.   Right, what do I have to do for you to forgive me?   Please tell me – I just want things back as they were.”

"Thanks for the food"

“Thanks for the food,” she says, but he reminds her that she did not have any food and again wants to know if he is forgiven.

She walks out off the house

Eleri’s reply is to get up from her chair and walk out of the house, without another word.
