Gaynor is in the Deri

Gaynor is sitting in the Deri when Tom comes in;  

"I'm glad you're here"

“I’m glad you’re here,” she tells him, “There’s something to discuss – something that Hywel said to me – about these plots that are being sold by the new lake.”

Siôn is taking an interest

Siôn is sitting by the bar reading the Western Post and takes an interest in eavesdropping on this conversation, as Gaynor continues, 

"I think we should buy a plot"

“I think we should buy one and build a house on it – imagine the view from Deri Lakes – it will be wonderful!”

Tom is not in favour

Tom does not look at all happy as she rambles on, “How many years have I lived in Llwyncelyn?   I don’t want to stay in the same place for ever – what do you think?”   

He immediately replies that he does not know, 

Siôn cannot resist interfering

but they are interrupted by Siôn;  “You’re not going to profit from the capitalism plaguing this village, are you?”   Gaynor replies that she is not sure, 

"I can't see that it's any of your business"

but what she does know is that she cannot see that it is any of Siôn’s business.

She reminds him, “You can’t talk,” 

"You need to consider the implications"

but he continues to explain that he could not help hearing and that she needs to consider the implications.   

"I don't want to discuss it"

However, she has no wish to discuss this with him, 

"All right, then – suit yourself"

so he turns to Tom, who has joined him at the bar.   

“I can’t believe that you’re actually considering it.”   Tom tells him to calm down, as it was not his idea.   

"Llwyncelyn suits me down to the ground"

He maintains that Llwyncelyn suits him ‘down to the ground,’ (or possibly underneath it?)

"If someone else bought it first . . ."

“There is a possibility that Gaynor couldn’t buy the plot, of course – if someone else bought it first,” Tom suggests, 

"It's still unethical"

but Siôn still considers it unethical, whoever buys it.

“Is it – even if it’s for a good cause?” Tom wonders, “Something that benefits the community – 

"Establishing a Welsh-language company?"

“establishing a local Welsh-language company?   No, it’s a silly idea – forget I said anything.”   

Siôn considers the merits of that idea

As intended, the idea has been planted in Siôn’s head.

"Are you all right?"

In the deli, Kelly is talking to Ieuan, but he appears to be taking no notice of what she says;  “I’ve got a planning meeting with Reese to discuss our businesses.   Are you all right?”  

"A bit more caffeine and I shall be"

Ieuan predicts that after a bit more caffeine and he will be all right.

"Honestly, like?"

“How are you doing?   Honestly, like.”   He informs her that some days are better than others and that Anita and Diane are making cupcakes at the moment.   

"It must be helping both of them"

He imagines with Dai’s situation, it must be helping both of them.

He takes out his phone to show Kelly a photo of the proud chef with her creations.   

"You should frame that"

“That’s a nice photo – she looks happy – you should frame that,” she smiles, but Ieuan may have a better idea than that, which he will look into.

"Is it all right to sit down?"

As Kelly leaves, Jinx comes in and asks Eleri if it is all right for him to  sit down.   “I must have been forgiven,” he tells her 

"How do you work that out?"

and she wonders how he worked that out;  

"You haven't set a timer today"

“You haven’t set a timer today.”

"You're an artist, aren't you?"

Ieuan comes across;  “Just the man I wanted to see – you’re an artist, aren’t you?”   Eleri enquires whether he is looking for a commission.   

"I'm looking for a family portrait"

“I’m looking for a family portrait as a special present for Anita.” Ieuan explains.

"He's half the price"

“You’ll get your money’s worth – he’s half the price of any fancy artist,” comments Eleri and Ieuan goes on that they need to remember the good days while they are still here.

"Is everything all right with Anita?"

Jinx is worried and enquires whether everything is all right with Anita;  “She’s all right today – you never know – 

"Since the diagnosis"

“every day is different since the diagnosis.”   

"What diagnosis?"

Apparently Jinx did not know anything about a diagnosis.

"Anita has dementia"

“Oh, I thought Kelly would have told you – Anita has dementia.”   This comes as a shock to Jinx and it is explained that Kelly has had a difficult time as well.

In that case, Jinx cannot think of charging him now for the portrait;  

"Anita would never forgive me"

“I’d love to have a freebie, but Anita would never forgive me,” says Ieuan,    “How does £500 sound?”   Jinx seems to be rather stunned by the amount.   Ieuan will organise a sitting of the people in the painting as soon as possible, anticipating that Anita will be delighted.   

"Sorry you had to find out like this"

He is sorry that Jinx had to find out like this.

"Flippin' Rhys!"

Kelly comes into the Deri, looking at her phone, then comments to Kath, behind the bar, “Flippin’ Rhys!   He insisted on a business meeting and now he can’t make it!   Do you know what?   Stomach ache, he said – 

"Hangover, more like!"

“hangover, more like.   Lime and lemonade, please.”

"How is Anita?"

Kath asks how Anita is;  “Erm, you know, all right – I’m more worried about Griffiths.”

Brynmor – with a woman

Before she can say any more, the door opens and Brynmor comes in, accompanied by a woman.   

"It was convenient for our meeting"

He asks Kath how she is;  “I wouldn’t have chosen to come here, but it was convenient for our meeting – 

"Meeting, is it?"

“business meeting – are you going to serve me?   I’ll have a coffee, please.” 

"Denise – what do you want to drink?"

Then he turns to his female companion and asks, “Denise, what do you want to drink?”   She replies that she would also like coffee;  he asks for menus.

"I've had a call from Lois . . ."

Colin comes into the pharmacy to tell Gaynor that he has had a phone call from Lois;  

". . . she's worried you're rushing into things with Tom"

“She’s a bit worried that you’re rushing into things with Tom.”   Gaynor angrily replies that things happen at the speed they are meant to happen – and everything feels right to her.

"We're thinking of moving home"

“To be honest, we are planning beyond the wedding now – we’re thinking of moving home.   Nothing’s certain – I don’t know what Lois’ problem is.”

"You've got an awful track record"

Colin points out that she wants to protect her mother;  “She’s worried whether you really know Tom – you have to admit you’ve got an awful track record of trusting the wrong people – look at Angharad!”

"Don't tell me you agree?"

“She’s not comparing Tom with Angharad?   She hasn’t even met him – don’t tell me you agree with her?”   

"We're bot on your side, Gaynor"

He points out that they are both on her side, 

"Get out of my sight!"

but Gaynor simply snarls at him to get out of her sight.

"Sure you're OK?"

Kelly has gone upstairs to the Deri flat to make sure that Kath is OK.   

"I thought Eleri was winding me up"

“I thought that Eleri was winding me up about that Denise business – she’s smart, isn’t she?”

"She's younger than his daughter"

“She’s younger than his daughter,” remarks Kelly as she sits down, “Bought, probably – “honestly, Kath, you’re better off without him, like, because a gazillion Brynmors aren’t worth one of you, right?”

Kath cannot believe that he would move on so quickly. 

"You need to open your eyes, Kath"

Kelly advises, “You need to open your eyes and see Brynmor for what he is, then, because, number one, if he’s doing this to make you jealous, it’s pathetic.   Two, if he’s doing it because he’s lonely, it’s pitiful.   Number three, if he’s doing it sincerely, 

"He's got a shock coming"

“he’s got a shock coming when he realises Denise is just after his money, like – saddo – better believe it!”

Ieuan is withdrawing cash

Ieuan is withdrawing cash from the machine in the High Street 

"You've got a handful there"

and Siôn remarks that he has a handful there.   

"I've had a brilliant idea"

“Well, I’ve had a brilliant idea, even though I say so myself,” Ieuan tells him.

Siôn regards it as a coincidence, as he has also had an idea;  “A National Centre on Deri Lakes land, with the Welsh language at the heart of every activity.”

"Our definitions of 'brilliant' might be slightly different

Ieuan suspects that their definitions of ‘brilliant’ might be a slightly different and explains that he is commissioning an artist;  

"We're going to sit for a family portrait"

“We’re going to sit for a family portrait as a gift for Anita,” which Siôn regards as a wonderful idea.

"In the nude – naked – no clothes"

“I almost sat for a portrait last year, in the nude – naked – no clothes,” he continues, 

"It's not that kind of portrait!"

but Ieuan stresses that it is not that kind of portrait.   “Well, that depends on the artist,” says Siôn, cryptically.

“No – I’m commissioning this portrait, so I decide,” insists Ieuan, 

"Caravaggio wouldn't have accepted that"

but Siôn is doubtful that Caravaggio would have accepted that, or Van Goch or Matisse.

"It's Jinx!"

“It’s Jinx!” Ieuan exclaims, which Siôn finds very interesting, 

"Enjoy the experience"

looking Ieuan up and down and hoping that Ieuan enjoys what he calls the ‘experience’.

"Don't go, Denise"

Denise gets up from her seat, but Brynmor urges her not to go as they have a couple of things to discuss.   “Sorry, I have to go,” she says, rather abruptly and he calls after her that he will phone her.

Kath looks sympathetic . . .

This is watched by Kath, as Kelly has just left the Deri;  

. . . as he glances in her direction

Brynmor turns to look at Kath, who feels sorry for him.

Gaynor is not happy

At Llwyncelyn, Tom can see that there is something wrong;  “You’re not angry with me for not discussing the plot, are you?”   She replies that she is just disappointed;  she knew that Lois was not sure about this wedding, 

"Colin feels the same way"

“but it seems that Colin feels the same way.”

"When were you speaking to Colin?"

He demands when she was speaking to Colin and she explains, “He came to the pharmacy at lunchtime.”   

"What did he say?"

Tom sits down on the sofa beside her, wanting to know exactly what he said.   

"It seems they don't trust you"

“Well, it seems that they don’t trust you – mainly Colin, I expect.”  

He describes this as ridiculous and Gaynor agrees that Colin is to blame here;  “He is the one who has been stirring!”   Tom cannot understand what is wrong with them.

"Please don't waste your energy worrying about it"

“It’s their problem, not yours,” Gaynor insists, “So, please, don’t waste your energy worrying about it.”   

But Tom is worried

On the contrary, it seems that Tom is very worried.

"I'm not serving you!"

Brynmor visits Kelly’s Takeaway, but is informed, “I’m not serving you!”   

"Don't you want my business?"

He is surprised that she does not want his business and again asks her for a wrap.   

"How much did you pay that PA?"

“How much did you pay that PA to be your girlfriend?” she demands.

"So that's what this is about"

He realises that this is what it is all about and assures Kelly, “Listen, I’m not the person you clearly think I am,” but she is clearly not listening to this.   “Can I have that wrap, then?”

"Go and ask Denise to make you a wrap!"

She wonders why he is still there;  “Go and ask Denise to make you a wrap!”

"Have you any idea what it's like?"

“Have you got any idea what it’s like to return to your village, where almost everyone turns their back on you?” he enquires.   

"Ah – sob story"

Kelly describes this as a sob story;  he continues, “It would be nice to be civil with someone – it was a business meeting, anyway.”

"In the Deri of all places?"

“In the Deri, of all places?” asks Kelly, “Convenient, isn’t it?   What are you trying to do – make Kath jealous?   Childish or what?”   He is adamant that was not his intention, but she does not believe a word of it.

He says that he is sorry if he has upset Kath, “I don’t know why I should justify myself to you – 

"I am trying to win her back"

“but I am trying to win her back.”

"Funny way of showing it!"

Kelly response to this with laughter;  “Funny way of showing it,” she chuckles.   When he again asks if he will be getting that wrap, she emphatically replies, “No – you’ve got more important things to do – 

"You know who you need to talk to"

“and you know who you need to talk to.   Now – shift!”

"Details of our . . . outfits"

Jinx is at home at number 9, and Ieuan has come to see him;  he is nervous;  “I don’t know how to word this – I’ve come to get the details of our . . . ‘outfits’.”   

"I want the picture to be 'natural'"

Jinx has not given the matter much thought, but wants the picture to be ‘natural’, so, to be honest, it is up to them.

Ieuan regards that as good news, but adds, “Just so we understand each other, we don’t need – 

"Birthday suits?"

“how shall I say it? – our ‘birthday suits’ on, do we?”

"The family in 'all their glory'!"

Jinx says that it is a good idea to be smart;  “You want to look back on the picture in years to come and see the family in ‘all their glory’.”

"Kelly will be there"

“And you’re comfortable with this, are you?   Kelly will be there,” Ieuan points out, becoming increasingly uncomfortable.

"Kelly's used to it"

“Don’t worry about Kelly – I used to paint Kelly a lot – she’s used to it,” laughs Jinx.

"Right, I want to cancel!"

This is the last straw for Ieuan, who decides that he wants to cancel, in that case;  

"My whole family naked!"

“I’m not paying £500 for a picture of my whole family naked – you just said!”

Obviously something has gone wrong

Jinx realises what has gone wrong here, 

"Tasteful, with everyone in their Sunday best"

and stresses that it will be tasteful with everyone in their ‘Sunday best’.   

"Yes, I already knew that"

Now Ieuan maintains that he already knew that, but just wanted to make sure;  he is looking forward to seeing Jinx’s work.

"I want to talk to you"

Brynmor approaches the bar and Kath asks what she can get him;  “I don’t want to be served – I want to talk to you.”

"You've got Denise to talk to"

“To me?   You’ve got Denise to talk to,” is her response.   He tries to make it clear that is what he wants to talk to her about, 

"There's nothing going on on"

emphasising that there is nothing going on between Denise and him.   

"You looked pretty cosy"

You looked pretty cosy at lunchtime,” Kath observes.

"Eleri lied about another woman"

“Look, Eleri lied to you about another woman.”   Kath cannot understand why she would do that, and he imagines that it may have been to make her jealous.   He is adamant that all he wants is for things to be all right between them – that they understand each other.   

"I assume you've sent those papers"

She agrees that is what she would also like – to make things right.   “So I assume you’ve sent those papers,” she adds, and he replies that he will do it today if that is what she wants.   

"Well, I want to make things right"

“Well, we understand each other and want to make thi

ngs right,” she says.   

Not what he had in mind

That did not go quite the way he was intending and he walks sadly back to his seat, 

"Are you all right, Dad?"

just as Eleri comes in, enquiring whether he is all right.

"No!"

“No,” is his stern answer, “Kath’s convinced that I’ve got another woman, thanks to you!”   

"I've already said sorry"

She maintains that she has already said sorry, but he points out, “That’s not good enough – 

"Have you got the necklace yet?"

“have you got the necklace yet?”

"I'm working on it"

She says that she is still working on it, and he sneers, “I’ve asked you to do one thing – and you can’t do that right.”

"Why are you stealing from her?"

“If you want Kath back, why are you stealing from her?” Eleri demands;  

"That's nothing to do with Kath and me"

his reply is that this is nothing to do with him and Kath.   

"So it is a test"

“I was right, then – it’s a test,” she deduces.

"And you've failed on every count"

“And you’ve failed on every count,” sighs her father, “What about the plots?   At least tell me you’ve found one buyer.”   Shamed, she again maintains that she is working on it;  “Which means you haven’t,” Brynmor groans, 

"What is your purpose?"

What is your purpose?”

An unusual view of Colin

At the MFC flat, Colin is laboriously cutting his toenails when the buzzer sounds;  

"OK – come up"

he finds that Tom is outside the door and lets him in, trying to clear up at the same time.

"Look, about this afternoon . . ."

“Look, about this afternoon with Gaynor,” Colin begins, but Tom has already been informed about what happened.

"I understand you don't trust me'

“I understand you don’t trust me,” says Tom, “And I don’t blame you – we hardly know each other.   I do appreciate why you would be protective of Gaynor, so, well, 

"I want to invite you and Britt to dinner"

“I want to invite you and Britt to Llwyncelyn for dinner – a chance to get to know each other better,”

Colin is rather surprised by this and thanks Tom for the invitation, 

"Britt works in the evening"

but regrets that Britt works in the evenings.  

"What do you say?"

“She can’t work every night, so what do you say?” asks Tom.

"I'd love to come"

Colin has a little choice but to say that he would love to come and Tom will text him, 

Tom looks at Colin's feet

although looking down curiously  at Colin’s bare feet as he leaves

"Sorry, I haven't got any turbot"

Jinx opens the door of number 9 to find Ellery outside;  she wastes no time in entering, as he apologises that he has not got any turbot, if that is what she is looking for.

She pins him against the door

Eleri pushes him against the front door and kisses him, 

"Are you all right?"

leading him to wonder if she is all right;  

And so to bed . . .

her only response is to tell him not to speak and to lead him upstairs.
