"Oi, move this van,will you?"

As Mathew walks slowly towards APD, he encounters Eleri, who shouts to him, “Oi, move this van, will you?   Our boys are arriving in a minute.”

"What's wrong with him these days?"

Mathew walks glumly into the shop without a word and Hywel wonders what is wrong with him these days.

"What are we going to do about this van?"

“What are we going to do about this van?” she demands and Hywel says that he will go and find Howard, pointing out that they have plenty of time.

Tom is about to leave

Tom is about to leave Llwyncelyn, but Gaynor tells him to wait a minute;  he protests, “I’m already late – I’ve got a health and safety course in Cardiff today.”

"I'm coming with you"

“I know,” she replies, “And I’m coming with you – I haven’t been to Cardiff for a while to do some shopping.”

"I'm going there with work" — liar!

He had not been expecting that and tells her that she cannot come, as he is going there with work, not for a ‘jolly’.

"I'm just using you as a taxi"

“I don’t expect you to spend the day with me,” she explains, “I’m just using you as a taxi.”

"There's no room"

He informs her that there is no room in the car as he is giving the boys a lift, which she finds outrageous;  “They don’t expect you to drive everyone?”   He says that he offered to do it,

"Can't you withdraw the offer?"

so she would like him to withdraw the offer, but he considers that it is now rather too late.

“If you had said earlier, I could have rearranged things –

"I'll probably be late home"

“I’ll probably be home late, so don’t worry about dinner.”

Gaynor is bitterly disappointed

She looks very disappointed as he leaves the house.

"That's perfect"

Eleri is supervising things in the street and informs her minion, “That’s perfect – another one round the corner?”

Kath has a shock . . .

Kath comes out of the deli

. . . and demands that it comes down

and is amazed to see what is going on;  she angrily shouts, “Take that down, please!” but is told by Eleri that it is to promote the carnival.

"That's promoting Quantum Hydro Works!"

Kath takes issue with this, pointing out that it is simply promoting Quantum Hydro Works and she wants it taken down.

What is the chap supposed to do?

The man who has deployed the banner is told by Eleri to ignore her.

"You have no right!"

“You have no right to do this!” Kath insists, but Eleri maintains that she has every right, as was decided by her and Kelly at last week’s committee meeting.

"Check the minutes of the meeting!"

She is advised to check the minutes of the meeting;  Kath is left speechless.

Rhys folds up Mathew's bedding

Rhys is folding up the bedding on the sofa when there is a knock at the door

"Is your Dad there?"

and he finds that Kath is on the doorstep.   “Is your Dad there?” she demands,

"Look at this!"

drawing his attention to the banner across the street.   Rhys cannot believe what he is seeing.

Hywel Llywelyn and Eleri are behind this

“Hywel Llywelyn and Eleri are behind this,” he is informed, “According to that madam, Kelly and I agreed to it – not to this, but just a few things

"With your father in the committee"

“with your father in the committee.”

"What has he got to do with the committee?"

Rhys wants to know what his father has to do with the committee.

“Last week, the one you couldn’t attend – he said you’d sent him on your behalf.”   Rhys makes it quite clear that he did nothing of the sort,

"This has to be sorted out!"

so Kath concludes that this has to be sorted out, wanting to know where his father is.

"They head for the confrontation

They march resolutely towards Cysgod y Glyn,

"Here we go!"

where Eleri lets them in, muttering, “Here we go!” to Hywel.

"Why aren't you answering your phone?"

“Why aren’t you answering your phone?” asks Rhys and Hywel says that he is busy.

"Busy back-stabbing everyone, is it?"

“Busy back-stabbing everyone, is it?” snarls Kath and Rhys asks why his father did not mention going on the committee.

"We've hardly seen each other"

Hywel protests that he has been so busy with Mathew that they have hardly seen each other.   “You had no right to be there!” Kath continues.

"You have no right!"

“And you have no right to put up banners in the carnival’s name,” adds Rhys,

"You and Kelly knew the deal"

but it is explained that they are promoting the carnival.   Hywel insists that he and Kelly knew the deal.

“We weren’t expecting such a big logo on everything,” Rhys complains;  he is told by Eleri that he cannot expect them to invest so much without any benefits.

Kath should understand that, as a successful business-woman;

"I don't see what your problem is"

“I don’t see what your problem is – the village wants a carnival and that’s what you’re getting – thanks to us.   So, if you don’t mind, we’ve got a lot to do.”

"This is not over!"

Rhys informs her that this is not over, but Eleri sneers, “What will you do?  Boycott the carnival?   You know where the door is.”

Kath and Rhys leave

Kath and Rhys sadly leave the flat.

Then Eleri admonishes Hywel, “It was your job to make sure Rhys wouldn’t be a problem –

"Sort it  – and sort it now"

“sort it – and sort it now, please.”

"Where do you keep your photos?"

Gaynor is looking through the sideboard at Llwyncelyn and she phones Tom to ask him where he keeps his photos;  he replies that they are in the red box in the cupboard.

At least, he was telling the truth about going to Cardiff

It can be seen that he is at Cardiff Bay, with the unmistakable landmarks of the Pier Head building and the Norwegian Church in the background.   As she continues looking for it, he tells her, “It’s there somewhere – look, I don’t have time for this now.”

"This box is not red"

When she does find the box, she complains that it is not red, but it does contain what she is looking for – a photo of him when he was a child, which she describes as ‘cute’.

"What do you want them for, anyway?"

“Why do you want them anyway?” he snaps and she says that he will find out.

"How'w the course going?"

She asks him how the course is going and is still disappointed that she cannot be there with him.   He points out that they have not really started yet, but they are going back in now, so he will have to go.”

Of course, the reason his is there is . . .

Of course, as we have already guessed, there is no course, but he is instead concerned with Ffion.

. . . Ffion

As he sits down beside her, he lies that the call was from work and he intends to turn off his phone, “So that no-one can disturb us from now on.   So we’ve got the whole day to do whatever you want.”

"I want to have a day to remember"

Ffion decides that she wants to have a day to remember.

"There are some brilliant photos in there"

Gaynor hurries into APD with the box in question and gives it to Howard;  she tells him that there are some brilliant photos in there.

"Kath hasn't changed a bit"

He thinks that one of them is Kath Jones, who he says has not changed a bit.

"Would you recognise Kath?"

Mathew comes in and is asked whether he would recognise Kath from that photo;  Gaynor would like to have a childhood photo of his, but he declines the request, maintaining that he does not have many pictures of himself as a child.

"Yoi don't want people to see how cute you were"

“You just don’t want people to see how cute you were,” teases Gaynor,

"I don't want to be part of some silly game"

but he scornfully replies that he does not want to be part of some silly game.

Howard is concerned

Howard appears to be very worried by his behaviour.

Later, at Cardiff Bay

Back at Cardiff Bay, some time later, apparently, at the end of an enjoyable day,

"I haven't had this much fun for ages . . ."

Ffion is telling Tom, “I haven’t had this much fun for ages – and all this fresh air.   Thanks for organising this –

". . .it's just what I needed"

“it’s just what I needed after weeks of being in the house.”

"You're going out a bit now"

He points out that she is going out a bit more now;  “Yes, Arwen and I went to the cinema over the weekend – some boring ‘rom-com’ –

"It wasn't as good as Pretty Woman!"

“it wasn’t as good as ‘Pretty Woman’.   Arwen’s been very good since I’ve been ill, fair play – she does a lot, but I feel guilty for asking her to do so much.   She’s only a child – I should be looking after her.   Do you have children?”

"I'm too selfish"

Tom exclaims, “Heavens, no – I’m too selfish.”

"You've been very unselfish, bringing me here"

She considers that he has been very unselfish, bringing her there today, but he protests that he wanted to – he has not had such a good time for ages, either.”

Ffion reminds him that he has just been to Paris, but he sighs, “You weren’t in Paris, were you?   But, seriously, I’ve had a good time – I like being in your company.”   She admits that she feels the same,

"An afternoon with you . . ."

as he goes on, “An afternoon with you beats any trip to Paris with Gaynor.”

She detects what is about to happen

Ffion is only too aware that his next move is to kiss her,

"We can't!"

so she turns away, insisting, “We can’t.”

"I don't think the one outside is big enough"

As Rhys brings in his lunch, his father is at work on the laptop;  Rhys sarcastically comments, “Organising another banner, are you?   I don’t think the one outside is big enough.”

"You're not angry about that?"

His father is surprised that he is angry about that;

"You're trying to take over this carnival!"

“Of course I am – you and Eleri are trying to take over this carnival!”

"You knew we were going to offer help"

Hywel protests that they told him they were going to offer help.

"But not hijack the whole thing!"

“Help, yes – not hijack the whole thing!” is Rhys’ response.

"You're go to make sure they are all in favour"

Hywel ominously points out, “This is how it works, right?   You’re going to make sure that every member of that committee is in favour of our plans.   We’re not interested in the type of carnival you’re trying to organise –

"We've sorted a celeb to open it"

“that’s why we’ve sorted decent stalls and a celeb to open it.”

"Anita's opening it"

“Anita’s opening it,” Rhys informs him, but his father thinks otherwise, pointing out that Rhys has to realise where his priorities are.

“It should be important to you that the people around here support Quantum Hydro Works –

"Or your shares will, be worth nothing"

“or your shares will be worth nothing.”   Rhys finds himself in rather a quandary.

"Are we going to discuss what happened?"

Back in Cardiff Bay, Tom asks, “Are we going to discuss what happened?”

"Nothing happened"

Ffion replies that nothing happened.   He continues, “What nearly happened?”

She says she is glad that it did not;  “I can’t do that to Gaynor – not again.”

"I can't help the way I feel"

He maintains that he does not want to hurt Gaynor, either, but he cannot help the way he feels.

"It's only been a few weeks since you asked her to marry you"

“It’s only been a few weeks since you asked her to marry you,” Ffion reminds him.

"She turned me down"

He brusquely answers, “She turned me down.”

“So what – you just move on to the next person, just like that?”   He assures her that he did not plan this, but the more he gets to know her, the more he . . .

"Please, don't!"

Ffion stops him there;  “Please, don’t!   I’ve been hurt before and I don’t want to do that to someone else – but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to . . . spend time with you.

"There's a line, isn't there?"

“I enjoy your company, but there’s a line, isn’t there?   And we shouldn’t cross it – not while you and Gaynor are still together.”

"So if it wasn't for Gaynor . . ?"

“So if I wasn’t with Gaynor,” Tom begins, “There would be a future for us?”

"We'd better get back to Cwmderi"

Ffion does not reply to that but suggests they had better get back before Arwen comes home from school;  not quite the response for which he had been hoping.

Mathew is deep in thought

Mathew is sitting outside the back of APD, deep in thought,

"I was just . . ."

when Howard comes out with a cup of coffee for him.   “No, there’s no time – I was just . . .”

"Sitting down, doing nothing"

“Sitting down, doing nothing,” Howard completes his sentence,

Is that a hint of a smile?

“Don’t worry about this carnival game, OK?   I’m not going to give her a photo of me as a child either – nobody wants to see that!”

Howard sits beside him

Mathew takes the coffee and Howard sits down beside him.

"They don't understand that some of us . . ."

“People like Gaynor think everyone has had a happy childhood like them.   They don’t understand that some of us . . . well, you know.

"Go home, Math"

“Go home, Math – you’re still not right after seeing your mother, are you?”

"I'm fine"

Mathew unconvincingly responds that he is fine, but Howard is not taken in for a moment.

"You're a liability"

“You’re a liability – I’ve cancelled your jobs, anyway, so you don’t need to be here – and APD will be fine.

"We'll all keep it ticking over"

“We’ll all keep it ticking over until you’re actually ready to come back to work, OK?”

"That Eleri's got a cheek!"

Now Kath is at the brewery, snarling, “That Eleri’s got a cheek!”   Rhys’ attitude seems to have changed,

"People will be glad of the help"

as he maintains that people will be glad of the help.

"With the Quantum Hydro Works logo over everything?"

“With the Quantum Hydro Works logo over everything?   No, I don’t think so!

"We have to stop them!"

“We have to stop them!”

Rhys says that it is not his problem, because Kath and Kelly agreed to it.   “Oh, thanks very much!   Right, I’ll go and see Kelly!”

"Kelly's gone away with Anita"

He tells her that will not be possible as Kelly has gone away with Anita, but Kath still protests that they have to do something.

“If we push them, they will push back and we could make it worse,” Rhys warns, “It’s best just to leave it for now, OK?   Perhaps it won’t be as bad as we think.”

"I've forgotten my house key"

Mathew approaches and says that he has forgotten his house key, so he wants to borrow Rhys’ key.

Rhys is worried about him

Rhys is surprised that he has finished work already and is worried about him.

"Who's stolen his chips?"

Kath simply asks, “Who’s stolen his chips, then?”

Rhys wants to discuss the carnival another time,

"I have something more important to sort out"

arguing that he has something more important to sort out and heads towards number 21.

Mathew takes off his coat

Mathew has only just taken off his coat, when Rhys knocks the door to be let in;

"I'm worried about you, Math . . ."

“I’m worried about you,” he immediately says, but Mathew insists that there is no need.

". . . the way you left Melfa"

“The way you left Melfa?” Rhys demands.

Mathew thought that he was working late tonight, but he answers that some things are more important than work and sits down on the sofa;

"Look, I'm here if you need me"

“Look, I’m not saying you have to tell me everything, OK?   But I know you – and I know that yesterday has given you a real knock, so I’m here if you need me.”

"I started remembering things"

After a few moments Mathew begins, “I started remembering things in that house – things that I don’t understand – things that I’d buried in the back of my mind somewhere.

"Grandfather'

“Memories, sounds, feelings – Grandfather.”

Rhys wonders what it was about his grandfather.

"It's if I blanked them out"

“You know, I just didn’t think about it for all these years.   It’s as if I blanked them out or something.”

"Didn't you get on with him?"

“Didn’t you get on with him?” asks Rhys

"I hated him – was frightened of him"

and is told that Mathew hated him – was frightened of him – and for all these years he has hated his mother instead.

Rhys cannot understand what he is saying,

"He used to hurt me, Rhys"

so he tries to explain, “He used to hurt me, Rhys – I forgot about it – well, forgot the details at least.   Then yesterday, in that house, it came back to me – the things he did to me.”

"What did he do to you?"

“What exactly are you trying to say, Math?” Rhys asks, “What did he do to you?”

"I should never have gone back there"

“I should never have gone back there,

". . . now it's stuck in my head  – and driving me mad!"

“because now it’s stuck in my head and I can’t delete it – it’s driving me mad!” Mathew sobs

Rhys has tears in his eyes

and Rhys also has tears in his eyes.

"He abused me, Rhys – sexually!"

Mathew struggles to say the words, “He abused me, Rhys – sexually!”

Rhys does his best to comfort his friend

and Rhys puts his arms around him.
