Hywel shows Eleri the leaflets

Hywel’s car is parked in a field gateway and he shows Eleri the publicity leaflets which he has had printed;  “Hey, these look great,” she comments;  he points out that all it says is that there will be a procession from Penrhewl at midday.   

"Has Rhys sorted Kelly out yet?"

“Has Rhys sorted Kelly out yet?” she goes on, 

"Don't you worry about Kelly"

but Hywel tells her not to worry about Kelly.

"I've got a good feeling about today"

“I’ve got a good feeling about tomorrow, you know – you’ll see,” she says, optimistically.   Then Hywel remembers that he has to contact Sioned to see where she is, then they have to distribute the leaflets, 

We have a glimpse of the leaflet

which we can see are headed, ‘Quantum Hydro Works present Cwmderi Carnival’.

"Are you absolutely sure about this?"

At number 7, Rhys asks Kelly, “So, are you absolutely sure about this?” 

"Yes, I am"

and she confidently replies that she is.   

Rhys is also good to go, so she picks up her jacket, 

"Let's do this!"

takes a deep breath and declares, “Let’s do this!”

The shop appears to have run out of fruit and veg

In the shop, Colin is telling Dani that he is sorry, but he does not have any fruit or veg;  “But it’s not surprising – you know – 

"Everyone's buying for the carnival tomorrow"

“everyone has been buying for the carnival tomorrow and the big competition – making animals out of them.   I had thought about making a chimpanzee, but Britt’s making a banana duck.   There’s been a rush on the cocktail sticks as well – we’ve sold out.   

"Are you and Gabriel thinking of competing?"

“Are you and Gabriel thinking of competing?”

"I don't think so"

Dani does not think so, so he quickly reaches under the counter, 

He finds a cauliflower under the counter

taking out a cauliflower;  

"A little present from me, in case you change your mind"

“Here you go – a little present from me, in case you change your mind – 

"No pressure – I understand if it's too much for you"

“no pressure – I understand if it’s too much for you.   I had thought about having curried cauliflower soup for dinner, but we’ll have pesto pasta instead.”

"Thanks, Colin"

Rhys and Kelly have just come into the shop as Dani thanks Colin for his gift and he hopes that he might see her tomorrow.

"Colin, can you keep a secret?"

Then Rhys approaches the counter;  “Colin, can you keep a secret?”   

"I'm useless – I always put my foot in it"

He replies that he is useless and always puts his foot in it.

"But you're trustworthy, aren't you?"

Kelly takes over;  “But you’re trustworthy, aren’t you?”   Colin assures them that he can be trusted.   

"We've got a secret mission!"

“Good, because we’ve got a secret mission,” she goes on, which Rhys informs him is ‘operation hush-hush’.   

"Ooh – hush-hush!"

Colin finds this quite intriguing.

"The windows at Llwyncelyn need doing"

Outside the deli, Mark hands one of his business cards to Gaynor and assures her that he has all the equipment for window cleaning.   She replies that the windows at Llwyncelyn need doing and she will text him.   

"The slots are going fast"

He informs her that the slots are going fast.

Dani comes across the road

Meanwhile, across the road outside the shop, Dani has been looking at her phone, then she comes over.   

"I need someone to hold the ladder"

Mark tells Dani that word has spread quickly about the business and he is booked up.   “I’ve got some jobs to do for Megan and her posh friends – they’ve got big houses with loads of windows – and I need someone to hold the ladder.”

"You're not serious, Mark?"

She cannot believe that he is serious, 

"I wouldn't ask if I wasn't desperate"

but he pleads, “I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t desperate”   She points out that she has done two cleaning jobs already today.   “Please, Dan – I don’t want to lose business, do I?”

Eleri comes into the deli

While they have been talking, Eleri comes into the deli, then Mark resumes work.

Ffion is near the shop . . .

Ffion looks at the display of flowers, but no vegetables, outside the shop, 

. . . when her stalker turns up once more

and who should come round the corner into the alley, but Tom, who appears to be following her around these days.   

"I've got a meeting at the rugby club"

She is not particularly pleased to see him, saying that she cannot stay, but is late for a meeting at the rugby club 

She walks away

and immediately walks away, which he finds disappointing.

"Three pairs of hands are better than one"

Gaynor and Kath are visiting Anita at number 7;  “I’m glad you’ve come over, girls,” says Anita, “Three pairs of hands are better than one.”   She has a box of bunting to be sorted out.

"I have enough trouble coping with Velcro"

“Don’t give me a needle and thread,” warns Kath, “Because I have enough trouble coping with Velcro and safety pins.”   

"It's just knots that need to be undone"

Anita consoles her that all that needs to be done is to undo knots, which Gaynor says will not take long, but then Anita advises that there are three more boxes.   

"This is slave labour!"

Kath describes this as ‘slave labour’.   

"Tom's dinner will be late tonight"

Gaynor will have to tell Tom that dinner will be late tonight.

"Tom?   I thought you'd finished"

“Tom?   I thought you’d finished?” gasps Anita, “You refused to marry him, didn’t you?   You said ‘no’ to his face in front of everyone.”   

"That was weeks ago"

Gaynor points out that was weeks ago and there has been a lot of water under the bridge since then.

"Do you think he will have forgotten what it feels like?"

“Do you think he will have forgotten what it felt like to be rejected in public?” Anita goes on, 

"I didn't reject him"

but Gaynor maintains that she did not reject him, simply refusing to marry him – and there is a difference, which she thinks that Tom understands.

"Or is he just saying that?"

“Yes – or is he just saying that until he finds someone who will marry him?” Anita wonders, 

I think you can forget about you Prince Charming!"

“I think you can forget about your Prince Charming!”   

They look surprised at this

Both Gaynor and Kath seem very surprised by this outburst.

"That's the last time I hold a ladder for you!"

Dani and Mark return to Maes-y-Deri, as she shouts, “That’s the last time I hold a ladder for you!”   He points out that it was only an accident, but she protests that she needs a shower.   

"You've had one of those already"

His joke that she has had one of those already is not appreciated, but he insists that the wet hair look suits her.   

"The drowned rat look, you mean"

“The drowned rat look, you mean!” she snarls and he maintains that she was squealing like a wild rat.   “Yes, I almost gave Mr Humphries a heart attack,” she laughs;  Mark is glad to see her laughing 

"I did like it – a little"

and she admits that she did like it – a little.   He will make lunch for them.

"This is easier than pulling pints"

“Well, I’ll tell you what – untying bunting is a lot easier than pulling pints,” says Kath, “I find it quite therapeutic.”   

Gaynor is depressed

Gaynor on the other hand is depressed, 

"She didn't mean to talk to you so bluntly"

so Kath explains to her that Anita did not mean to talk so bluntly to her earlier.   

"I'm not sure how many people know this . . ."

“I’m not sure how many people know this, 

". . . but she's got dementia . . ."

“but she’s got dementia – 

". . . so don't take it to heart, right"

“so don’t take what she says to heart.”   Gaynor is shocked to hear this

Anita answers the door to a visitor

Then there is a knock at the door and Anita comes downstairs to answer it;  the visitor is Hywel who has brought them the leaflets with details of the programme for tomorrow.   Anita points out that they have been doing the bunting, 

"Kelly has been going over the speech with me"

“And Kelly has been going over the speech with me.”

“Oh, right . . . Hasn’t Kelly explained about the speech?” says Hywel, “I thought she would have told you.   

"We've decided to give that to someone else"

“We’ve decided to give someone else responsibility for the speech.”   

This angers Gaynor and Kath

Gaynor and Kath look outraged by this, as he continues, “And you won’t be opening the carnival either – we’ve got a special guest – we thought it would be better to take the strain off you.”

Anita is very upset

“Hold on – I thought Kelly told me,” says Anita, who is by now very flustered;  

"Anita was supposed to do that from the start!"

Kath emphatically points out that Anita had been supposed to do the speech from the start.

"Wait until you see the celeb!"

Hywel however insists, “Yes, but wait until you see the celeb – then you’ll understand.”   

"So this celeb is more important than Anita?"

Gaynor sneers that a celeb is more important to him than Anita, 

"The carnival is bigger than any individual"

but his answer is, “The carnival is bigger than any individual – it’s about the whole community.   I can’t stay, I’ve got things to sort out.”  

Anita is very confused

As he leaves, Anita is in a very confused state.

Mark brings Dani's lunch

Mark add some crisps to the sandwiches on the plate as Dani comes back downstairs, feeling better now that she does not smell like a sewer.   

"There might be potential to start a partnership . . ."

“Look, Dan, I’ve been thinking – as you enjoyed today, there might be potential for us to create a partnership.   

". . . it makes sense"

It makes sense – you can offer a window cleaning service on top of the cleaning and give that business to me.” 

"I'm not sure that would work"

She is not sure that would work, but he reminds her that they both want their businesses to succeed, so it is a ‘no-brainer’.   

"I don't know if I'm in the right place at the moment"

“I don’t know if I’m in the right place at the moment to go into a partnership with anyone,” she answers

"Once was enough!"

He laughs that he is not asking her to marry him;  “Once was enough!” 

"Yes that was a disaster!"

and she recalls that it was a disaster.   “The thing is, if I do have to go to prison, I’ll need someone to look after the business, so that I have something solid I can rely on when I come out.”

She complains that it is a huge responsibility, 

"But you're a remarkable woman"

but he regards her as a remarkable woman.   

"Perhaps I used to be"

She comments that perhaps she used to be.   “You still are – and that’s why you’re my first choice.”

He receives a message on his phone, 

He is determined not to leave his lunch behind

quickly picks up his sandwiches and informs Dani that they have another job.   

"No, Mark – not today!"

She, however, draws the line at this, so he will just do the ground floor for today, 

"I'm serious about this, Dan"

but stresses that he is serious about the proposal;  he needs the business to succeed, so asks her to think about it.

Now Tom is harassing Ffion again 

Ffion is finding it impossible to escape from Tom these days;  now he arrives at the rugby club and asks how the meeting went.   

"What are you doing here?"

She wants to know what he is doing there, 

"I was worried about you"

and he says that he was worried about her.

“There’s no need to be – I’m fine,” she insists, 

"Do you want to go for a coffee?"

but he would like to go for a coffee.   

"I need to get home"

“Sorry, I don’t have time.   I need to go home and sort out the house,” Ffion tells him.

He believes that there is something wrong, reminding her that she hardly spoke to him all the way back from Cardiff the other day;  “Did you get my text?”   

"I've been trying to keep my distance"

She admits that she has been trying to keep her distance – and he knows why.

"I thought you were happy to remain friends"

“I thought you were happy to remain friends,” he goes on, so she explains that it is difficult, because they are kidding themselves.  

"It will only make things worse"

“If we spend more time together, it will only make things worse.”   

"I want to make things worse"

He replies that he wants to make things worse.

Anita is still looking very upset

Anita is still looking very upset when Kelly returns home;  “Sorry I’m late – rushed off my feet this morning,” she says, 

"What's wrong, Auntie Neet?"

then she notices that something is wrong.

"Hywel says I don't have to do my speech"

“Hywel Llywelyn’s been here – he said I don’t have to do my speech – that a celeb will do it,” Anita groans.

"That's what he said, is it?"

“Oh, that’s what he said, is it?” Kelly growls and Anita wants to know if it is true – whether she will do her speech now.   

"Can you keep a massive secret?"

Kelly crouches down beside her;  “Can you keep a massive secret?   

"You[re going to open the carnival!"

“Don’t tell anyone, but you’re going to open the carnival!”   

This pleases Anita no end

Anita is very relieved to hear that.

"I wanted something to happen . . ."

In the woods by the rugby ground, Ffion explains, “Spending time with you in Cardiff the other day was just a lovely day.   I didn’t want it to end – I wanted something to happen.   

". . . but then you said Gaynor's name"

“But then you said Gaynor’s name – and I’m glad you did because I needed to hear it.   

"Reality check!"

“Reality check!   You’re in a relationship and you seem happy.”

"What Gaynor and I have is complicated"

Tom tells her, “Look, Ffion, what Gaynor and I have is complicated.”

"I have to take a step back"

“Well, let me make things simple for you, then,” she begins, “I have to take a step back – and you need to do the same.”   

"Can't we talk about this"

He wants to talk about this, 

"It's for the best, Tom"

but she assures him that it is for the best and walks away.

How many blinkin' windows does someone need?"

Dani is cooking when Mark comes home, complaining, “How many blinkin’ windows does someone need in one house?   

"Megan was keeping tabs on me"

“Megan was following me from room to room, keeping tabs on me with all the windows.   And before I forget . . .”

Presumably they are cocktail sticks, as the shop ran out

He hands a small container (of cocktail sticks?) to Dani who asks where he got them;  “Luckily Megan has been stockpiling them in a cupboard since the 70s,” 

"You're a star, Mark"

and she describes him as a star (Seren).   She adds that Seren would have enjoyed them, 

"She would have forced me to make a purple unicorn"

imagining that her daughter would have forced her to make a purple unicorn.

"I'm glad you're going to let Gabriel compete"

“Listen, I’m glad you’re going to let Gabriel compete,” Mark tells her;  she thinks perhaps she might be stronger than she thought – 

"I've decided to help with the business"

and that is why she has decided to help with the business – well, at least, try to help with the business.

He is delighted to hear this;  

"You won't regret it, Dani"

“You wont regret it, Dani – it makes sense.”   She has one condition, however – 

"I'm not going near another bucket!"

that she is not going near another bucket.

Hywel and Eleri leaving leaflets . . .

Eleri and Hywel come into the Deri, distributing timetables for tomorrow, 

. . . one of which is for Kelly

one of which is put down on the table where Anita and Kelly are sitting.   

"So that people know what's happening"

Hywel leaves some on the bar, so that people know when things are happening.

"Oh, very glossy!"

Kelly comes across, remarking, “Oh, very glossy!”

"Quantum Hydro Works demand quality"

Eleri replies that Quantum Hydro Works demand quality, 

"I'm glad you're on board with the plans"

adding, “I’m so glad you’re on board with the plans.”   

"Oh, yes – 100% on board!"

Kelly emphasises that she is 100% on board.   Further along the bar, Colin says that those plans will be at their fingertips by tomorrow;  

"A carnival to remember"

“We shall have a carnival to remember!”   

They are feeling very smug — for now, anyway

Eleri and Hywel look very pleased with themselves.

"What's that big secret again?"

Anita wanders across to the bar and asks Kelly, “What’s the big secret we’re not supposed to tell anyone?”   

"The big celeb – right, let's go home"

Kelly quickly improvises that it is the big celeb – and no one is allowed to know who he or she is.   Then she is anxious to get Anita out of there, predicting that their dinner will be cremated if they do not get home.

"I've got a bottle of Bolli in the fridge"

Eleri announces that she has a bottle of Bolli in the fridge for tomorrow;  

"Don't forget those papers, Kath"

before she leaves the Deri, she reminds Kath about those papers, as her father is still waiting.   

"No, I haven't forgotten"

Kath replies that she has not forgotten.

Colin assumes that this is the divorce paperwork;  

"Not getting cold feet, are you?"

“You’re not getting cold feet, are you?”   

"I don't want pressure – especially from her!"

Kath replies that she just does not want anyone to put pressure on her – especially Eleri.

"Large glass of red wine, please"

Gaynor comes in, apparently in a much better humour than earlier;  “I went for a walk to clear my head – a large glass of red wine, please.”   

"That clear head won't last long"

Colin comments that the clear head will not last long in that case.   

On the contrary, she maintains that her head is totally clear for the first time in a long while;  

"Can you keep a secret?"

“Can you keep a secret?”   

"I already know – Kelly and Rhys told me"

He replies that he already knows, which puzzles Gaynor, as he explains that Kelly and Rhys told him earlier.

"I haven't told anyone"

“No – I haven’t told anyone yet,” she goes on, 

"What secret are you talking about?"

so now he is unclear about what secret she is talking about.   

"I'm going to asks Tom to marry me"

“I’m going to ask Tom to marry me tomorrow – at the carnival,” she tells him.

Colin was not expecting that

Colin seems rather shocked by this.

Ffion is working

Ffion, is sitting with some paperwork at Deri Fawr, when she hears the door open and Tom walks in again;  

"Sorry, I couldn't stay away"

“Sorry, I couldn’t stay away,” he says, “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

"I was miles away"

She confesses that she was miles away, and he thinks that he knows where;  

"I was going to leave you alone – but I can't!"

“I was going to leave you alone, Ffion, but I can’t,” 

Oh dear

and he kisses her;  she does not make any objection.

"I think we've covered everything . . ."

At number 7, Kelly tells Rhys, “Right – I think we’ve covered everyone and everything – 

". . . apart from the critical phone call"

“apart from the critical phone call.”   

"There will be no turning back!"

He reminds her that there will be no turning back then;  “It will be a real war!”

"Not scared, are you?"

“Are you scared?   You know, going to war with your Dad, like?”   

"We're going to war with Quantum Hydro Works!"

He reminds her that they are going to war with Quantum Hydro Works.

“Yeah – are you having cold feet or what?” she asks.

"This is Eleri Beynon speaking"

She dials the number;  “Hello, this is Eleri Beynon speaking – sorry to call you so late.   It’s about the carnival in Cwmderi tomorrow – 

"We're going to have to cancel"

“something has come up and we’re going to have to cancel, so we won’t need the bouncy castle, or the stalls or the fair.   

"We realise we still have to pay in full"

“Yes, cancel everything – and we realise that we still have to pay you in full.   

"It's a shame, but there we are"

“It’s a shame, but there we are.”

Kelly squeals with delight

She ends the call and squeals with delight;  

They are jubilant . . .

she and Reese are triumphant.

. . . and Kelly is excited
