25 December 2024 (1st)

Tom leads Cheryl into the room . . .

Tom is leading Cheryl, with her eyes closed, in through the door

. . . where breakfast awaits

and then tells her that she can open them;

"Coffee and Croissants – Merry Christmas!"

“Coffee, croissants – Merry Christmas!”

He kisses her

and he kisses her, but she does not look entirely happy.

"I don't understand a word of this"

At Penrhewl, Howard is looking at the cooking instructions, with his inability to read causing some problems;  when Sioned comes in, he apologises, “Sorry, Sioned, I don’t understand a word of this.”

“Good job that we have a chef, then,” she replies,

"Merry Christmas!"

as the door opens and DJ comes in, wishing them a Merry Christmas.   Howard is very relieved to see him, while Sioned is confident that this will be the best turkey they have ever tasted.

"No pressure, then!"

“No pressure, then!” exclaims DJ and Sioned is looking much happier.

He goes to look at the twins . . .

DJ goes across to have a look at the twins,

. . . sleeping soundly

who are sleeping peacefully.

Dani looks pensively . . .

Dani looks very pensive as she stands in front of the grotto in the alley,

. . . at the crib

staring at the crib;

She is joined by Jinx

Jinx joins her there.

We have not sen this view before

Round the back of Maes-y-Deri, which has never been seen before, Cheryl is making a surreptitious phone call to Gaynor, periodically glancing around the corner to make sure there is no sign of Tom.

"I am your sister — and I always will be"

She leaves a message, “Hey, Gaynor – before I leave I just wanted to say, whatever you think of me and although I haven’t acted like one recently, I am your sister, OK?   And I always will be.”

She gets back into the house

She goes back inside the house,

"Where have you been?"

with Tom asking where she has been;  “I was just checking the bins –

"Yes, of course I am"

“we need to empty them before we go.”   When he enquires whether she is OK, she replies, “Of course,”

She is given a watch

as he hands her a present.   It is a watch with a pink strap, which she says is lovely;  she tells him to open his present.

He finds that it is aftershave;  “I remember you wearing that,” says Cheryl, “Do you like it?”

"Just what I needed"

He maintains that it was just what he needed.

Gaynor listens to Cheryl's message

Gaynor is walking past the Deri when she listens to the message which Cheryl has sent;  this makes her think.

"You're just in time to help"

Hywel comes out of the door of number 21 with some food which he is taking into the Deri next door;  “Oh, great, you’re just in time to help,” he tells Gaynor,

This has made Gaynor think

but she appears to be very confused.

Eleri is on her morning run

Eleri is on her Christmas morning run as she comes round the corner by MFC and meets Jinx;  he has just been to the shop

"It's not a good day if you don't have pigs in blankets"

and informs her, “It’s not a good day if you don’t have pigs in blankets – Colin burned the first batch, so it’s lucky I had these in the freezer.

"What are your plans today?'

“So what are your plans today?”

"Films and a bottle of Bolly"

She expects to be watching films all day with a bottle of Bolly – “On my own!”   A voice calls from across the road to wish them a Merry Christmas;

"The Deri is open until one"

Cassie reminds them that the Deri is open until one o’clock and invites them in for a drink.   Predictably, Eleri turns down this offer.

"Brandon and Siôn almost burned the turkey"

In the MFC flat, Britt is trying to dispel the smoke from the burnt sausages;  “This reminds me of when Brandon and Siôn insisted we couldn’t go near the kitchen, then they almost burned the turkey,” she says.

Kylie makes her first appearance for some time as Dani recalls that they were ill for days afterwards.

"They cooked the giblets in the bag"

“Yes, because the two clowns cooked the giblets in the bag!” Britt snarls.   Kylie offers to help, but is asked if she and Gwern can supervise Gabriel.

"They were good days"

Dani reminisces that they were good days, but Britt is convinced that there are more good days to come with the wedding, just as Jinx comes into the flat,

Colin is in half a cracker costume . . .

followed by Colin, who is dressed as a cracker.   “The pigs in blankets have arrived!” he joyfully announces and Jinx points out that they need to be defrosted, then asks Colin where the other half of the cracker is.

. . . but Jinx is not eager to put on the other half

“Here it is, all ready for you – come on, it’s Christmas!”   Britt maintains that it is a tradition that they all wear something special.

Cheryl finds her keyring in the bin . . .

At Maes-y-Deri, Cheryl is putting some rubbish in the bin and inevitably finds what Tom threw away.

. . . and slips it in her pocket

She slips it into her pocket, but this is noticed by Tom,

"Perhaps we should go today"

who suggests, “Perhaps we should go today, rather than tomorrow – there will be less traffic – you can pack while the food’s cooking, then we could eat and go.”

"Or we could open a couple of cans . . ."

She has an alternative suggestion that they could open a couple of cans and leave in the morning as they had planned;

". . . so we can enjoy Christmas"

“So we can enjoy Christmas.”

He sneers at her use of the word ‘Joio[which appears to be Welsh slang]

"Even more reason to leave today"

complaining that Cwmderi has got under her skin, which is even more reason to leave today.

She protests that she wants to enjoy Christmas with him,

"We can have hugs on the sofa"

because last year, with Mark, it was a disaster.   “Come on, we can have hugs on the sofa, get drunk – an early night.”

"Why did you buy aftershave?"

He demands why she bought him aftershave

"I didn't have much time to go shopping"

and she apologises that she did not have much time to go shopping.

“So you just bought whatever was there at last minute – nice!

"You know how to make someone feel special!"

“You know how to make someone feel special, don’t you?”   She emphasises how sorry she is and he goes on, “Do you like this watch?

"Perhaps I should have bought you a keyring!"

“Perhaps I should have bought you a keyring to treasure!”

"Come on, Dave . . ."

“Come on, Dave, you don’t . . .” she begins,

"Dave?   What do you mean, Dave?"

but he strongly objects to being called Dave, so she quickly changes it to Tom and urges him to listen, stressing that the keyring means nothing to her.   She will throw it away and does not even know why Mark gave it to her.   She tries to convince Tom that he is the one she wants – no-one but him – and apologises once again.

"Pack, eat and go, yeah? . . ."

“It’s all right – you’re under strain, understand that – it’s just one little slip-up,” he replies, “What if we go and pack, eat and go, yeah?   Everything will be OK, then.   I’m almost finished upstairs,

". . . so be ready by three"

“so be ready to go by three.   We might make it in time to have a drink in the Lion.”

Her smile soon disappears

Her smile disappears as soon as he is out of sight and she looks at the watch.

“Have you heard from her today?” Cassie asks Gaynor, who is absentmindedly stirring her drink.

"She's still claiming to be my sister"

“Well, she’s still claiming to be my sister.”

"She may be your sister"

Cassie still believes that indeed she may be, and ought to be given a chance to explain.   Hywel is worried that there is not enough room at the table for their family group, but is assured that they will be fine.

"The taxi has been cancelled"

Mark comes in, rather flustered, saying, “The taxi I booked has cancelled – and there are no trains or buses.”   Cassie comments that anyone would think it was Christmas.   Hywel wonders how he is going to get to Bristol Airport in that case.

"You're not expecting me to . . ?"

Cassie realises that he is expecting her to drive him there;

"I'm completely desperate, Cassie!"

“Please Cas, I’ll pay you – I’m completely desperate!”   She enquires whether she will be taking more than one person and Mark is hopeful that will be the case, but she has not been in touch yet.

Gaynor is thinking again

Cassie and Gaynor look at each other.

"Guaranteed you broke the world record, Kyles"

In the MFC flat, Colin, Britt and Kylie are dozing after their Christmas dinner, with Colin also helping himself to the Roses chocolates;  “Guaranteed you broke the world record for eating pigs in blankets, Kyles,” he remarks.

"They taste just like my Gran's"

She answers that they tasted just like her grandmother’s.

Dani reports that Gabriel is asleep and has been excited for days,

Jinx has received a message . . .

while Jinx has received a phone message;

. . . and Gwern is watching him

when Kylie asks whether they should wait for Gabriel to wake up before they open their presents,

"I've forgotten Dani's present!"

this provides an ideal opportunity for Jinx to claim that he has forgotten Dani’s present.

Gwern has his doubts about this

Gwern is very suspicious of this, but Britt imagines that he has forgotten to buy her a present.   “I’ll go over there now while Gabriel is having a nap,” he proposes, and Colin appears to be already asleep.

Gwern asks Kylie if she fancies going out while the oldies have a recharge;  she will go and fetch her shoes.

Cheryl brings a case down . . .

Cheryl brings a case downstairs,

. . . finds her passport . . .

takes her passport from a drawer

. . . but Tom interrupts things

and is about to send a phone message when she hears Tom coming downstairs, so hides the phone down the side of the sofa.   She tells him that the turkey is just resting.

"I'm shattered"

He says that he is shattered and sits down by her on the sofa, now giving the impression of being all loving again, but she soon gets up on the pretext of checking the food again,

He lies on the sofa

so he reclines on the sofa.

Cheryl consults her watch

It is not long before Cheryl thinks that he is asleep and she looks at her watch.

"Oh, it's cute . . ."

Jinx is at Cysgod y Glyn, where Eleri opens the present she has been given by him and describes the ‘Bah, Humbug’ decoration as, “Cute!

". . . but not what I had in mind"

“Mind, it wasn’t the present I had in mind.”   He says that he is sorry, but he cannot stay.

"At least let me pull that cracker!"

“Well, at least let me pull that cracker,” referring to the bottom half of his cracker costume.   He appears to be considerably tempted, as usual.

"You can talk to Mam again soon"

Sioned is assuring Huwi that they can talk to his mother again soon;  she reports to DJ that her mother just wanted to talk to Huwi today.

Did she ask about Tamed?"

Howard wonders whether she asked about Tamed.   Sioned is sure that she must have heard about it and when DJ asks why she would know,

"Who do you're think?   Siôn!"

replies, “Who do you think?   Siôn!”   He maintains that it is up to her what she wants to do with the place and suggests that she should go for a look at the twins.

The twins are now in red

When she does so she discovers that they are dressed in matching red ‘babygros’ bearing their names.   He had been hoping that she would like them and she describes them as perfect.

"Time to play some games"

Now she has decided that it is time to play some games, although Howard says that he hates games.

“Come on, Uncle Howard,” Huwi encourages him,

"Not games where I have to read!"

and he agrees, but there are to be no games where he has to read.   Sioned sends Huwi to go and get the chocolates;

"We're going to celebrate Christmas properly"

they are going to celebrate Christmas properly.

Jinx creeps out of Cysgod y Glyn . . .

Jinx cautiously emerges from Cysgod y Glyn, whose door seems to have acquired a number 2.

. . . and hurries along the back street

He hurries down the back street,

Gwern is doing some investigating

past the alley along which Gwern and Kylie are walking,

Eleri hangs her present on the door . . .

while Eleri comes out to hang the ‘Bah, Humbug’ ornament on the door handle.

. . . and is being watched

This confirms Gwern’s suspicions.

Mark comes out of the Deri . . .

Mark emerges from the Deri, but can see no sign of Cheryl;

. . . wondering whether to ring Cheryl

he takes out his phone and hesitates, wondering whether to ring her number.

"You're back at last"

After her sleep, Dani is pleased to see Jinx returning at last;

"Sorry – I dozed off"

“Sorry – I sat down for two minutes and I fell asleep,” he lies.   Britt announces that his present was under the tree after all and he assumes that he must have been more organised this morning than he realised.

"Where's the bottom half of the cracker?"

Eagle-eyed Colin notices that the bottom half of the cracker is missing;

"I forgot to put it back on" — so it is at Cysgod y Glyn, then

this time Jinx maintains that he pulled it off to have a nap and then forgot to put it back on.

"I don't want to just give you the present, Dani . . ."

Then he gets to the present for Dani;  “Well, it’s not a surprise, but I don’t want to just give you the present, so, Dani . . .”

"Ooh – look, Colin!"

At this point, he gets down on one knee

"Would you do me the biggest honour . . ?"

and asks her, “Would you do me the biggest honour of marrying me?”   She nods her head and he puts the ring on her,

Gwern looks on, disparagingly

just as Gwern and Kylie come in.

Dani gasps that it is beautiful, while Gwern and Kylie look at each other.   “How did you know I like this?” Dani demands and he says that he took the task seriously and remembered the examples which she had shown to him.   Britt is becoming quite emotional.

"Are you sure those diamond aren't fakes?"

Colin thinks that must have cost a fortune;  “Are you sure those diamonds aren’t fakes?   This calls for more bubbles!”

Gwern is angry . . .

Gwern looks furious

. . . and Jinx recognises that

and Jinx is obviously feeling the weight of his guilt.

"How accurate are these DNA tests?"

At number 21, Hywel asks if Gaynor prefers a Beaujolais or a Burgundy. Her mind, however, is on other things;  “How accurate are these DNA tests?”   When he maintains that they are pretty accurate, she demands, “What do you mean – ‘pretty accurate’?

"So it's not certain that Cheryl isn't my sister?"

“So it’s not certain that Cheryl isn’t my sister?”

He concedes that it is not 100% certain, but . . .   She is already leaving the house,

"I'm going to try and catch Cheryl"

advising, “I’m going to try to catch Cheryl before she leaves for Wrexham.”

Hywel receives a puzzling phone call

Hywel’s phone sounds and he is baffled by what someone tells him.

Dani looks at a little angel

Dani looks at a little cardboard angel and doubtless thinks of Seren as Jinx comes downstairs;

"I'm so proud of you today"

“I’m so proud of you today,” he says, and she is adamant that she could not have managed it without him.

Dani is going upstairs

Gwern is standing in the kitchen doorway.   Dani is feeling very tearful and intends to go upstairs for ten minutes, to compose herself

"Remember that parcel I accepted?"

“Do you remember that parcel I accepted for you?” asks Gwern, “The box was a little bit ripped.   You said it was perfume for Dani – but I know it was a bauble – why did you lie?”

"I must have got mixed up"

Jinx says that he must have got mixed up – and that perfume still has not arrived, so he will have to contact them.

"Who was the bauble for, then?"

“Well, who was the bauble for, then?” is Gwern’s next question.

"One of the customers"

He is told that it was for one of the customers at The Pizza Place – just a silly in-joke.

"If you do anything to hurt her . . ."

Gwern declares, “If you do anything to hurt her, your life won’t be worth living!

". . . do you hear?"

“Do you hear?”

It is almost three

Cheryl looks at the watch and sees that it is just past a quarter to three;

The food is on the table

she takes the plates of food to the table

"Ton, the food is ready"

and announces to Tom that the meal is ready,

He appears to be sound asleep . . .

but he appears to be fast asleep.

. . . so she decides that it is now or never

She summons up her courage and tries to retrieve her phone from the sofa,

He blocks the access to her phone

but at that moment he moves his leg so she cannot get to it.

She takes her case . . .

She creeps quietly to pick up her case,

. . . and heads for the door . . .

then carries it as silently as possible through the kitchen, opens the back door about to step out of the house,

. . . but then . . .

when he appears behind her.   “Where are you going?” he demands.

Mark puts his luggage in Cassie's car

Mark is loading his luggage into Cassie’s car

"Do you want me to call at Maes-y-Deri?"

and she offers to call at Maes-y-Deri, just in case.   The car pulls away.

"I was putting it on the car for later"

Cheryl comes back inside, trying to convince Tom that she was putting the case in the car for later, because there is a lot to do.

"Where were you going, Cher?"

“Where are you going, Cher!” he snarls.

“I knew you were in a hurry,” she begins, but he knows that she is lying.

"I'm not sure if I want to go to Wrexham"

“OK, I’m sorry, but I’m not sure if I want to go to Wrexham with you.”

"We're meant to be together"

His evil temper begins to take over;  “We’re meant to be together, you and me!” he insists,

"No, we're not"

but she dares to contradict him.   “Yes, you’ll see,” he goes on,

"I can't live without you, Cher!"

“I’ll treat you like a princess – you can have everything you want – I can’t live without you, Cher!   Why do you think I came looking for you –

"Even after you attacked me!"

“even after you attacked me?   Because I need you – I don’t want to live without you.”

"You don't have a choice!"

She tells him that he does not have a choice,

"Who's that?"

but then there is a knock at the door and they can hear Gaynor’s voice, begging Cheryl to open the door.

"Not a sound . . ."

Tom forbids Cheryl to make any sound;

". . . or you – and Gaynor – will regret it!"

“The slightest noise and you and Gaynor will regret it!   Do you understand?” he warns.

"I'm willing to do the test again – together"

"Gaynor continues, “Cher, I’m willing to do the test again – together.”

"Cheryl, open the door"

As there is no response, she shouts through the letterbox,

"You're meant to be with me – no-one else!"

while Tom again threatens Cheryl that she is meant to be with him and no-one else

"I don't want to lose you, all right?"

“Cher, please, just open the door and let me in.   I don’t want to lose you, all right?   I’ll be here when you want to get in touch, OK?”

She returns to the car

She gives up and walks sadly back to her car.

"Even  Gaynor's given up on you!"

“There we are,” says Tom, “Even Gaynor is giving up on you – just like Mark did!   You haven’t got anybody except me – you’re so lucky that I love you so much.

"Right, come to the table"

“Right, come to the table, before this food gets cold.”

"If you love me, you'll let me go"

No,” says Cheryl, “If you love me, you’ll let me go,”

She is about to leave

and she turns toward the door again.

"You're not going anywhere!"

He jumps up from the table, furiously shouting, “You’re not going anywhere!”

He flings her across the kitchen . . .

He grabs Cheryl, pulling her away from the door and throwing her across the kitchen,

. . . and she lies, motionless

hitting her head on the way.

"Get up, Cheryl!"

As she lies motionless on the floor, he orders her to get up.

"No, no, no – Cheryl!"

Then, when there is no response, he thinks that he has killed her and panics, “No, no, no – Cheryl!”
