Rhys lies on the sofa

Rhys is lying on the sofa when Mathew is ready to go to work the next morning;  

"Since when have you been awake?"

“Since when have you been awake?   I didn’t hear you get up,” he says. 

Rhys replies that he has not been to bed, and is reminded that the doctor told him to get plenty of rest.

"With all this stuff going round in my head"

“How am I supposed to do that with all this stuff going round in my head?” Rhys demands.   

"I can work from home today"

Mathew has some paperwork to do so he can work from home today, but Rhys insists that he will be all right on his own;  

Rhys simply turns over

he simply turns over and tries to go back to sleep.

"I can't believe you still haven't spoken to him"

As they approach Tomos ac Ellis, Anita tells Ieuan, “I can’t believe you still haven’t spoken to him,” and he reminds her that Rhys almost drowned.   

"He had no business being there!"

“He had no business being in the pool in the first place!” she exclaims.   

"Don't you worry about Rhys"

Ieuan will deal with him and advises her not to worry about Rhys.

“Can you manage with just yourself and Kelly?” she wants to know and he is not yet sure about that.   

"I could help you, Ieuan"

“I could help you – only temporarily until you find someone to replace Rhys.”   He thanks for the offer, but stresses that, as she is aware, he does not mix business and pleasure.

"I'll see you tonight, after work"

“I’ll see you tonight,” he says, “Drinks after work, then I’ll treat you to a takeaway.”   Anita was under the impression that they were meeting for lunch, but he has a last-minute meeting to attend.

She whines that she has booked a table and everything;  “So that’s why I got the chocolates!” she moans.   

"Right – the Deri at five"

He promises to be at the Deri at five.

Mathew is studying his phone

When she arrives at APD, Mathew is looking at his phone;  he was not expecting her today, but she explains, 

"There's no point having the day off now"

“I am working now – there’s no point having the day off, as Ieuan’s changed our plans.”

"Don't you have any friends, then?"

“Don’t you have any friends, then?” Mathew asks.   She ignores this, instead enquiring how things are going at Llanelli.   “We’re a bit behind, and that there is loads of paperwork to do.”

"Rhys is very lucky"

As he is still looking at his phone, Anita wonders why he is not getting on with something;  “Texting Rhys, are you?   You know what?   He’s very lucky Ieuan turned up the other night – that’s all I’m going to say.”

"I'm deleting Facebook messages, if you must know"

He replies, “I’m deleting Facebook messages if you must know.   

"This 'Meddal' company"

“All I’ve had the last few days are invites to ‘like’ this ‘Meddal’ [soft] company.”   

She recognises that as being the make-up company;  

"Glenys says the stuff make you look years younger"

she reports that Glenys has said that that the stuff is great and makes you look years younger.

"Yeah – if you believe this"

He shows her the publicity photo, cynically commenting, “Yeah – if you believe this.”

"You'll be late for school"

At Llwyncelyn, Hywel tells Esther that she will be late for school, but she is adamant that she wants the pink case.   “I don’t know where it is – it might be in the attic,” he protests, 

"Can't you go and fetch it?"

so she wants him to fetch it, and will not stop her demands.

“I don’t want to go to school!” she snaps, “We’re having an assembly today – it’s so long and boring with Miss Hughes.”   

"Who did it before?"

Hywel asks who did it before and is told, 

"Mr Rossiter – when will he be back?"

“Mr Rossiter – when will he be back?”   Hywel does not know the answer to that, but encourages her to hurry;  

Her comment makes him think

her comment also causes him to think.

Eileen is in a very benevolent mood today

Eileen is at the shop, selecting various items to go to the food bank;  Colin  notices that some of them are not nearing their sell-by date, 

"I don't want them to go to waste"

so she explains that they are not selling well and she does not want them to go to waste.   He confirms that there are more tins of beans on order, to be delivered tomorrow.

"Why have you decided to do this, Eileen?"

“Listen, can I ask you something?” says Colin, “Why have you decided to do this?”   She answers that the shop is now in a position to do it and she has been thinking about contributing for a while, but something always got in the way.

"It's important to be kind"

“It’s important to be kind when you have an opportunity,” she adds, (rather uncharacteristically).   

"It's a shame more people don't think like that"

Colin regards it as a shame that more people do not think like that.

"I thought we understood each other"

Griffiths has gone to the shop flat to see Rhys;  “I thought we understood each other,” he begins, “Especially after last time.”   

"I'm sorry"

Rhys mumbles that he is sorry.

“You’re always sorry – but I don’t have a choice this time – you’re never sorry enough not to do it again.   

"What came over you, Rhys?"

“What came over you?   Having a party in a client’s house and then inviting people you don’t even know!”

"I wasn't thinking straight"

Rhys points out that he was not thinking straight;  Ieuan continues, “I was  young once, you know – 

"I enjoyed having fun with pretty women"

“I enjoyed having fun with pretty women – but I would never have dreamed of doing what you did.”

"You didn't have a problem, did you?"

“You didn’t have a problem, did you?” Rhys snarls, and repeats that he is sorry.   Things got out of hand and I regret it so much – I don’t know why I thought . . . 

"I scared myself!"

“I scared myself!”

He puts his head into his hands, groaning, “I’ll come over to the office in the morning to clear my desk.”

"I've done a few stupid things"

Griffiths sits down and tells Rhys that there is no rush;  “I’ve been there, too,” he admits, “In your situation – I’ve done a few stupid things – especially after staring at the bottom of a bottle.   Well, I wanted everything as well.”

Rhys is surprised to hear this revelation

This revelation surprises Rhys, as he continues, “A successful business, working stupid hours – but also going out and enjoying myself too much.   

"I can't believe I'm saying this"

“Right – I can’t believe I’m saying this, but, I want you to come into the office by nine tomorrow.”

"You forgive me?"

“You forgive me?” says Rhys, incredulously.   

"No – but I do understand"

He is informed that he is not being forgiven, but Ieuan does understand.

"Any more nonsense like this . . ."

“Any more nonsense like this – anything – and you won’t get another opportunity!”

Hywel has gone to visit Cai

Hywel walks along the drive of the hospital where Cai is being treated and sees him sitting on the bench.   

"How are you, Cai?"

“How are you?” he asks and Cai looks surprised.

"Thanks for your generous contribution"

Jinx collects the box of groceries from the shop and thanks Eileen for her generous contribution;  she stresses, “Anything for the community!”

Colin jokes that if Jinx gets hungry, there are a couple of flapjacks hiding in the box, 

"They're not for me, Colin!"

but Jinx insists that they are not for him.   

"Right, I'd better go now"

Eileen is now about to leave, 

"You put your feet up, Eileen"

and Colin advises her to take a break and put her feet up.

Colin looks for something . . .

Then Colin appears to have mislaid something;  he searches the counter, but without success 

. . . and is very concerned when he cannot find it

and looks extremely concerned.

"You didn't happen to find anything in the box?"

When Jinx comes out of the vestry, after delivering the box, he is looking at his phone and Colin hurries across, wanting to look in the box.   “Don’t lock up – you didn’t happen to find something in the box from the shop, did you?”

"I don't help myself to things"

Jinx makes it very clear that he does not help himself to things 

"I've lost something a bit delicate . . ."

and Colin explains that he has lost something;  “Something a bit delicate – 

". . . a black book, about this size"

“a book, a little black book.”

"Full of your 'business contacts'?"

“Full of your ‘business contacts’, yeah?” smiles Jinx, and it is explained that it is a list of people who own money to the shop.   

"Letting them pay when they can afford it"

He has been giving people food and letting them pay when they can afford it, to help with the cost of living.

"Eileen's so generous recently"

“I didn’t realise Eileen had a ‘tab’ in the shop – she’s so generous recently,” comments Jinx, 

"She doesn't know anything about it"

but Colin reveals that she does not know anything about this, and Jinx can then understand his need to find the book, 

Bethania's vestry has acquired a number '4'

and they go inside.

Eileen does not like what she sees

Meanwhile back at Penrhewl, Eileen takes the missing book from her bag and is dismayed by the contents.

The search was fruitless

Colin emerges from the vestry, having not found what he was looking for, as Rhys walks past; they have already been through the boxes three times.

"I'm sure it was on the counter"

“Where was the last place you saw it?” asks Jinx, and Colin is sure that it was on the counter, next to the till.   He has searched the shop, even behind the magazines and the chocolate.   

"Could you have taken it home?"

It is suggested that he might have taken the book home, and he remembers having to double-check some of the sums.

"Right there – on the kitchen table . . ."

He comes to the conclusion that it must be there;  “Right there – on the kitchen table – it must be!   

". . . Jinx, you're a genius!"

“Jinx, you’re a genius!”   As Colin rushes up the street, 

"Not another one!"

Jinx receives another text message;  

'Worst pizzas in the world!'

‘Worst pizzas in the world!’

Hywel sits beside Cai

Hywel sits down beside Cai; 

"I've been thinking about you a lot"

“I’ve been thinking about you a lot since I heard,” he says.

"You don't need to be afraid of discussing it"

“Heard what I did?   You don’t need to be afraid of discussing it,” Cai replies.

"You were very good to me after the accident"

Hywel realises that he should have been there for Cai;  “You were very good to me after the accident.”   

"Some people are better at hiding things"

Cai could see that he was suffering and adds that some people are better at hiding things.   Hywel maintains that he should have noticed and asks, “How are you now?   It can’t be easy.   

"This is a nice place, isn't it?"

“This is a nice place, isn’t it?   To come and get some fresh air.”

Cai admits that this is the first time he has come so far from his room;  Siôn has been to see him, 

"It was the only place I felt safe"

but he has been staring at the same four walls for weeks.   In fact it was the only place he felt safe.

Anita looks at the 'Meddal' website

At APD, Anita is looking at the ‘Meddal’ website when Matthew comes in, speaking on the phone.   

"You're right – he needs to go to the police"

“I don’t know what to tell him – he’s obviously worried, but so would I be if it happened to me.   Yes, you’re right – he needs to go to the police.   I’ll talk to you later, Sioned.”

"Why does he have to talk to the police?"

Anita looks disapproving;  “I know he nearly drowned, but I don’t understand why he has to talk to the police.”   

"It's none of your business, Anita"

She is told that the matter is none of her business.   

"He stole the keys – so it is my business"

“Excuse me – he stole the keys from my partner’s office – so it is my business,” she argues.

Then she returns to the website

She looks again at the website, 

"Years younger"

then switches to camera mode and mutters to herself, “Years younger.”   She picks up her phone and dials the number.   

"I'm interested in becoming one of your agents"

“Good afternoon, my name is Anita Pierce and I’m interested in becoming one of your agents.”

"I've been having CBT sessions"

Cai goes on, “I’ve been having CBT [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy] sessions – and they seem to be helping, slowly.   They help me understand patterns – triggers, you know.”   

"So you know what to do when you feel like that"

Hywel assumes that they help him to know what to do when he feels like that.

"It's a long process"

“Sometimes – it’s a long process.”   Hywel asks if he has contacted Lleucu and Twm since he has been there.   “Yes, a couple of times – I have to accept that I’m a different father now – a father who lives away and sends money every birthday and every Christmas – and sometimes when they don’t expect it.”

"You sound as if you're seeing things more clearly"

“You sound as if you are seeing things more clearly, anyway,” remarks Hywel.   Cai appreciates that the therapy and the exercise help, as well as the drugs, if he is honest.   Now he has things to look forward to – 

"Looking forward to getting better"

just one at the moment – getting better – before long, hopefully.   

"Now I have to go"

Now Hywel will take his leave;  

"In time for Esther to get back from school"

“To be home by the time Esther gets back from school,” says Cai and he is told that Esther is looking forward to having him back at school.

"Make the most of her company"

“Make most of her company, of being there for her,” Cai recommends and is pleased that Hywel came;  

"See you soon – in the village"

he hopes to see him again soon, in the village.

"Britt has lost her glasses"

Eileen goes to see Colin, who has obviously been searching high and low for the book, although he maintains that Britt has lost her glasses.   “Are you sure you haven’t lost something?” she demands, 

"Something like this?"

“Something like this?” and she produces the book.   “I picked it up from the counter – and lucky I did, as well”

He says that he can explain and she is very eager to hear it;  

"A few customers cam in without enough money"

“A few customers came in without enough money,” he begins.

"Like Kath Jones – she's bought a pub!"

“Oh, like Kath Jones – she’s just bought a pub!” Eileen growls, and he concedes that a few might have started to take advantage, 

"There are people who are struggling"

but there are people in the village who are struggling.

"That's why there is a food bank – to which I contribute"

“And that’s why there is a food bank in Bethania – which I contribute generously towards,” she reminds him.   

"That only started today"

He points out that only started today.

"Half the people are in the Deri every other night"

“Well, half the people in this book are in the Deri every other night,” she observes, but Colin insists that there are children in the area who do not even have a decent dinner.   “And giving their parents free food will solve everything?” Eileen asks.   

"It's a start, Eileen"

He regards it as a start, but Eileen is anxious to stress, 

"Learning how to look after money would be a better start"

“Learning how to look after money would be better start.   

"You're going to ask them all for the money back . . ."

“Now, this afternoon, you’re going to contact everyone in this book and ask them for the money back – 

" . . .by next week!"

“by next week!”

When he protests that he cannot do that, she tells him, “You didn’t have a problem letting them not pay – 

"Next week, Colin, all right?"

“next week, Colin, all right?”

Esther returns from school

Esther is back from school and Hywel asks if she wants a cheese sandwich or beans on toast.   

"Oh, what's this?"

Then he picks up something from behind the sofa;  “Oh, what’s this?” he says and she realises that he has found the pink case.   

"Thanks, Dad!"

She gives him a hug. 

"You have to talk to the police"

In the shop flat Mathew insists that Rhys has to talk to the police, but he is adamant that he is fine.   

"You couldn't sleep last night"

“You couldn’t sleep last night because you were so worried,” Mathew continues, 

"I'm seeing things more clearly now"

but now Rhys maintains that he is seeing things more clearly.

"They could do it to someone else"

“But, as Sioned said, whoever spiked you could do it to someone else,” Mathew adds and Rhys is angry that the matter has been discussed with her.   “She’s worried about you as well.”

"Half the village will know now!

“Half the village will know about the Rohypnol now!” Rhys rages, “DJ, Eileen – I don’t need your help!   You’re a friend – 

"You betrayed me!

“you’ve opened your mouth and betrayed me!   Do you seriously think I’d go to police when I was doing Coke that night?”   

"No way am I going to the police!"

He makes it crystal clear that under no circumstances is he going to the police.
