Garry bangs on the shop door

Garry is hammering on the door of the shop, which has not yet opened;

"All right, all right!"

“All right, all right!” shouts Colin, “Hang on!” and he unlocks the door.   Garry can see that he is very flustered, and asks if he is OK.

"Technical hitch with the alarm clock"

“Technical hitch with the alarm clock,” Colin explains, “To tell you the truth, I didn’t sleep that well last night.”

"You're not overdoing things, are you?"

You’re not overdoing things, are you?” Garry demands, and reveals that he wants some chocolates.

"Chocolates?   At this time?"

Colin is surprised that anyone would want such a thing at this time of the morning, and is informed, “Yes – I’ve got some bad news for Dani – I’m not sure how she will take it, so I’m hoping that chocolates will help.   I say ‘bad’ news, but perhaps ‘unexpected’ would be a better word.”

"Unexpected?"

“Unexpected?” wonders Colin,

"Am I going to get served?"

and Garry enquires whether he is going to get served, or if Colin is just going to repeat everything he says,

"Here you are, Garry"

so he is handed a box.

Mathew contacts Tegwen

Mathew is composing a text to Tegwen;  ‘Hiya.   Sorry, it’s me again.   Just checking you’re OK.   Give my best to Ken.’

"The roof of the gym is leaking"

Cai comes into APD, to advise Mathew, “Ffion’s just phoned to say the roof of the school gym is leaking – do you think you could have a look at it?”

Mathew thinks that it is unusual for the deputy head to sort that sort of stuff out,

"Ffion wants it done as soon as possible"

but Cai points out that Ffion wants it done as soon as possible.

"Want to get back in the good books?"

“Ah, want to get back in the good books, do you?

"I can come over this afternoon"

“I can come over this afternoon,” Mathew replies.

Cai is only thinking of the good of the school

“But remember it’s the school – every penny you charge will mean fewer books and equipment for those children – remember that when you’re doing the figures,” Cai urges him.

Sioned comes downstairs . . .

Sioned comes downstairs at Deri Fawr

. . . and finds that there is a cooked breakfast

to find that DJ has cooked her breakfast and was about to take it up to her.

"I'm glad you've come home"

“Just a little something to show that I’m glad you’ve come home,” he says,

"You don't have to do anything today"

and adds that she does not have to do anything today, as the weather is terrible.

"It's lucky you bought those waterproofs"

“It’s lucky you bought those waterproofs,” she remarks, and he jokes that they will be handy for her.

The chicken portions, waiting to be fried

At MFC, Tyler is being given a crash course in chicken preparation by Garry;  “You dip the chicken in milk to make sure the mix sticks, then swirl it round evenly –

"That's it – into the fryer – easy!"

“and that’s it – into the fryer – easy!   Are APD happy that you cut down on your shifts?”

"They'll be happy to see less of me"

Tyler imagines that they will indeed be happy to see less of him.

"Top tip – wash your hands"

Garry goes on, “Top tip – wash your hands, all the time – even if you don’t have time, you make time.   No food inspector is going to catch us – or any other kind of inspector.”

Garry gives Tyler some keys

Then he hands over some keys to Tyler, explaining, “The stock’s being moved tonight – keep an eye out for the van and open up for them –

"You and me, partners in crime"

“do you think you can do that?   Who would have thought it – you and me, partners in crime?”

Is he trying to 'get one over' on Garry?

As Garry walks out of the shop, Tyler appears to be developing some kind of plan.

"Haven't you got any work to do?"

In the Deri flat, Dani is folding some washing when Garry arrives there with the chocolates.   “Haven’t you got any work to do?” she asks him, but he regards coming to see her as a better use of his time.

"You've got chocolates – what do you want?"

She demands, “What do you want?” then looking round, adds, “You’ve got chocolates, so I’ll ask you again – what do you want?”   He tells her that he has a new worker;  “And I need to know that because?” she demands.

"Because he's your brother"

“Because he’s your brother,” Garry continues, which she finds rather strange,

"Have you lost it, Garry?"

and thinks that Garry has ‘lost it’, but he explains that they understand each other, and that he knows about the stuff in the garage.

"He threatened to go to the police"

“I caught him watching everything from that window, and he threatened to go to the police.”

"And how does that solve the problem?"

Dani cannot see how giving him a job will solve the problem

"I can keep an eye on him"

and Garry answers, “I can keep an eye on him.”

"I don't like you dragging him into your mess"

Dani does not like him dragging her brother into this mess, but Garry insists that he is doing Tyler a favour;

"APD doesn't pay him enough"

“APD doesn’t pay him enough to look after himself – let alone Greta.”

Dani complains that at least APD is legit;

"Look, he's not in any danger"

Garry insists, “Look, he’s not in any danger – and if he was, I would be, too – and that’s not going to happen.

"Everything will be all right, I promise"

“Everything will be all right, I promise.”

Dani is not so sure about that

Dani obviously does not believe this assurance.

"What have you ordered this time?"

DJ comes into Deri Fawr, manoeuvring a large box and wonders what Sioned has ordered this time.

"It's just a cupboard for the bedroom"

“I had forgotten that was coming – it’s just a cupboard for the bedroom,” she tells him, “Do you fancy going to the Deri for a drink tonight – after you’ve finished fixing that?”

Sioned looks shocked

she opens one of the other letters and appears very shocked by its contents, although she tells DJ that it is nothing.

“What did we say about talking?” he reprimands her.

"Don't freak out, right?"

“Don’t freak out, all right?   I promise I can sort this out,” she tells him, handing over the letter,

"You haven't been repaying it?"

and he discovers that she has not been repaying the loan.

"I've just missed a few payments"

“I’ve just missed a few payments,” she wails, “A few weeks.”

"Do you know how much these people charge?"

“Do you know how much interest these people charge?” he rages, “The debt will be bigger than the loan – I told you these companies are dangerous!”

"I wanted to make this place into a home"

She replies that she wanted to make the place a home for them,

"We won't have a home at this rate!"

but he shouts, “We won’t have a home at this rate – what are we going to do?”

Exhaustion has overcome Colin

At Penrhewl, Colin has fallen asleep as a bubbling sound can be heard;  Eileen comes into the room at that moment,

"Colin – the custard!"

and shouts to him that the custard is boiling,

He drops the hot pan . . .

and he quickly takes the saucepan from the heat, without the benefit of oven gloves.

. . . splashing boiling custard on his arm

As a result, he drops the saucepan, splashing boiling custard over his arm.

Eileen puts it under cold running water

Eileen runs cold water over the scald to try and ease the pain.

"Nice uniform"

In the Deri, Dani finds Tyler by the bar and comments, “Are you celebrating?   Nice uniform.”

"I was going to tell you, Dani"

He says he was going to tell her, and that it pays better than APD.

"Why have you been staying with me every night?"

“Why have you been staying with me every night?” she wants to know.

"I was looking out for you, Dan"

He admits that he has been keeping an eye on Garry – looking out for his sister.   “Look, you’ve got a record – it’s not safe,” she warns him,

"What if something goes wrong?"

“What if something goes wrong?”   He accuses her of worrying too much, and thought that she would be pleased, as he has done everything she wanted him to do.

"I've accepted you and Garry are together"

“I’ve accepted that you and Garry are together, and I’m working for him.”   Dani stresses that this is not the mafia and he will not get hurt if he refuses, but Tyler insists, “This is the only way, Dani, Garry and I have been at loggerheads for too long – so I’ve decided to work with him instead of against him – I don’t have a choice.”

Dani has serious reservations

Dani is far from happy about the situation.

Colin is escorted home

Eileen escorts Colin back home to number 21, and Garry cannot help noticing;

"Colin, are you OK?"

“Colin – are you OK?” he demands, and Eileen says that he burnt his arm, but it is nothing serious –

"He was 'sleeping on the job'!"

she jokingly refers to ‘sleeping on the job’.

"It won't happen again, Eileen"

Colin assures her that it will happen again

He goes into number 21

and goes into the house.

"That means more work for me now!"

Eileen moans that it will mean more work for her now, but Garry is worried about Colin;

"He's doing too much"

“He’s doing too much – you said he was sleeping – and he was late opening the shop, too.”

"I hope you're not blaming me"

Eileen hopes that Garry is not blaming her for this, but he considers that they should just help Colin;

"Cutting down on his shifts, perhaps"

“By cutting down on his shifts, perhaps?”

“Hold on – I can’t do that – I’m barely coping as it is,” she complains, and Garry demands whether she wants to make Colin ill.   “Of course I don’t – we’re a long way from reaching that point,” she insists, “This was just a bad day.”

Garry is not so sure about this,

"Well, tell your sister to come back!"

so Eileen snarls, “Well, tell your sister to come back – I’ve got a business to run!” and she storms off.

"If you had only told me, Sioned"

Sioned is looking very worried and DJ tells her, “If you had only told me.”

"I thought I had everything under control"

She replies that she thought she had everything under control, but that was before . . .

DJ maintains that he could have sorted it;  “I don’t know how, but I could have tried.”

"It's all my fault – I'm sorry"

He sits down gloomily in a chair;  she tells him that she is sorry, and all this is her fault.

"I want this place to be perfect for us"

“I wanted this place to be perfect for us – so we could start a family,” she groans,

"It is perfect – when you're here"

and he points out that it is perfect when she is there.

"You didn't say that when we moved in"

“You didn’t say that when we moved in – remember the damp?” she goes on, and he also refers to the water in the cellar.

"That swine John!"

He calls John, “The swine!” and is adamant, “That box has to go back as well!”

"It matches the rest of the furniture"

Sioned begins to protest that it matches the rest of the furniture, but then realises that he is right.   “You’re not hiding anything else, are you?   Any letters?” he enquires, and she promises that she is not;  she hopes that they are all right,

"We shall find a way"

and he is sure that they will find a way.

"We can start this week"

Mathew has provided a quote for the school and tells Cai, “If you and the council are happy, we can start this week.”   Cai thinks that will be great and thanks Mathew.

"Orange juice?"

He is just being served an orange juice, which Mathew thinks is strange.

"I wanted to test myself"

“I’m not drinking at the moment,” he says, and Mathew wonders why he is in the Deri, in that case;  “I wanted to test myself – and so far, so good,” he answers.

"Why is this?"

Mathew is interested to know what has caused this change of heart;  “I’m not the easiest person to be around after I’ve had a couple of pints,” Cai readily admits,

"I'm ashamed by how I've been acting"

“To be honest, I’m ashamed by how I’ve been acting recently.”

Mathew has a disappointing text

Mathew praises him for his attitude and then receives a text on his phone, at which he looks very disappointed,

"Bad news, is it?"

so Cai assumes that it is bad news.

"Tegwen doesn't want me to contact her again"

After a few moments’ silence, Mathew reveals that it is from Tegwen;  “She’s asking me not to contact her again.”

Cai can see that he wants her back,

"I don't know what I want any more"

but he groans that he does not know what he wants any more.

"Sat what you have to say and then go"

Colin sits down on the sofa and tells Garry, “Just say what you’ve got to say and then go.”   Garry also sits and asks how the arm is feeling;  “It’s a bit better – what do you want?” Colin answers.

"I'm worried about you, Col"

“Was Eileen telling the truth, that you fell asleep?   I’m worried about you, Col,” says Garry, but Colin responds that it is a bit late for that now,

"You should have thought about that"

and he should have thought about that before sending Britt off to Newcastle.

“You’re doing too much – do you know that?” Garry demands, but is told that he is doing Britt’s job until she gets back home.   “But that’s on top of your own work – you can’t carry on like this.”

Colin maintains that he will be fine after a good night’s sleep;  “What other choice do I have?

"Are you going to make Cae Glas custard?"

“Are you going to make Cae Glas custard instead of me?   No, I thought not.   Right, I’m going to have forty winks before going back to work,

"Shut the door on your way out"

“so shut the door on your way out, please.”

Colin settles down for a sleep

Garry leaves the house.

DJ is made aware of the enormity of the problem . . .

DJ is equipped with a calculator as he goes through the bills

. . . and does not know the answer

and does not know what he is going to do to put matters right.

"You say she's with someone else?"

In the Deri, Cai is still drinking only orange juice, and remarks, “You say she’s with someone else?”

"Ioan, Ken's father"

Mathew explains that it is Ioan, Ken’s father.   “It will be better for the little one for Mam and Dad to be together,” Cai maintains.

"Something's just not right"

“Perhaps,” replies Mathew, “But there’s something about him something’s just not quite right.   I don’t know what it is, but I’ve just got this feeling – all I want is for Tegwen to be all right – do you think I should check, just to make sure?”

"I've split up plenty of families"

“Her message seemed quite firm,” Cai tells him, “Listen, I’ve split up plenty of families over the years – including my own – and, believe me, it’s not worth it!”

Mathew is downhearted

This is not what Mathew wanted to hear.

The van has arrived . . .

The roller shutter door on the garage is raised and the van doors are opened;

. . . and the loading begins

the various boxes are loaded inside as Tyler walks along the street,

Tyler looks up at the flat . . .

past the fire escape, and looks up into the window of the Deri flat,

. . . where Garry is keeping watch

from where Garry is keeping an eye on him.

"I tried to change his mind earlier"

Dani joins Garry at the window;  “I tried to change his mind earlier,” she says, and Garry points out that Tyler is not being forced.   “He’s vulnerable, Garry,” she goes on, and he promises he will look after her brother.

"If anything happens to him, Garry . . ."

“If anything happens to him, I’ll never forgive you,” she warns.

"It won't!"

Garry decisively replies, “It won’t!”
