Surely Garry is more resilient than that |
Dani comes into the kitchen in the morning and finds Garry leaning over the sink and groaning; he asks if she has any paracetamol,
"I told you not to open the second bottle" |
and she reprimands him, “I told you not to open the second bottle of wine.”
"Why haven't you got a hangover?" |
“Why haven’t you got a hangover?” he demands, and she says that she can handle it.
"I want a drink of water, Mam" |
Seren comes in and asks her mother for a drink of water, but is hurried back to bed, with Dani promising to bring her some water.
"It's not funny, Garry!" |
This makes Garry laugh, but Dani insists that it is not funny; “I don’t want them to know that you stayed here –
"Get up and go – now!" |
“so get dressed and go – now!” He agrees that he will do as he is told.
Iolo gets rid of Eifion's possessions |
At Y Felin, Iolo, in his dressing gown, comes downstairs with a pile of Eifion’s clothes, which he places in a black sack.
He looks at that photo |
Then he picks up the photograph and looks at it.
The air bed is packed away |
Jason opens the curtains at Bryntirion and Kelly deflates the air bed; he says that she does not need to do that, but she obstinately insists that it is fine and that he should get out of her way.
"Breakfast – full Welsh?" |
Diane comes downstairs and suggests, “Breakfast – full Welsh?” Jason likes the sound of this,
"I have no appetite" |
but Kelly says that she has no appetite, and carries the air bed upstairs.
"Still in the doghouse, then?" |
“Still in the doghouse then?” Diane assumes, and is sure that Kelly will come round,
"I got the ring for her" |
but Jason is not so optimistic, explaining that he got the ring for her,
"That's beautiful, Jason" |
which his mother describes as beautiful.
"She said no" |
“She said no, so . . . don’t you let on that you know anything about this, OK?” Jason stresses, and looks depressed.
Eileen has problems with a marauding ram |
At Penrhewl, Eileen is on the phone to a neighbouring farmer; “I’m sorry the ram’s damaged your fence, Handel. You don’t really expect me to traipse all the way to Neuadd Wen? I haven’t got a babysitter!”
"I'll look after Huwi, Mam" |
Sioned has just come in with the wash basket and volunteers that she can look after Huwi.
“Go, or he’ll tell everyone that our animals are causing havoc,” Sioned urges her, and assures her mother that she will be fine with Huwi.
"I'll be up there now, Handel" |
Eileen confirms to Handel that she will be up there now,
"He'll be fine with me, Mam |
but is still worried about leaving Sioned with her brother.
"Where's the tea, Jason?" |
Diane cannot find the tea, and Jason informs her that it is kept in a different cupboard; she complains, “You’ve moved it as far as you can from the kettle.”
"That's where Auntie Neet put it" |
Kelly comes in and retrieves it from the cupboard, pointing out that it was moved by Auntie Neet.
She demands what is the problem,
Jason's guilty look |
and by the look on Jason’s face,
"You've told her!" |
concludes, “You’ve told her!”
"Why did you refuse?" |
Diane asks why she refused, and Kelly snarls at Jason, “That something between you and me!”
Diane knows she is angry that he gave Sara money, but is told by Kelly, “None of your business!”
"Leave it, Mam!" |
Jason agrees with that, and tells his mother to leave it,
"You were doing the right thing, Jason" |
but she maintains that he was doing the right thing.
"So 'the right thing' is to keep things from me?" |
“So you think the right thing to do is to keep things from me? You think he was right to give Auntie Anita’s rent money to Sara?” demands Kelly, and Diane argues that he should have been straight with her;
"Now he has said sorry, there's no reason to turn him down" |
however, now he has said sorry, Kelly has no reason to turn him down – especially on Christmas Day.
“We all make mistakes, Jason,” Diane continues,
"A massive mistake!" |
and Kelly regards that as a massive mistake. “You’ve made your share, good girl!” Diane adds, and Kelly wants to know what that means.
"Ed – and Moc" |
“Well, you went out with Ed – and what about Moc?” Diane will not listen to Jason’s instructions to stop, but rages, “And you turned Jason down? He’s worth a hundred of them! It doesn’t make sense!”
Kelly storms out |
Kelly is not standing for any more of this and storms out of the house.
"You're the best thing that's happened to Kelly" |
Jason is informed by his mother that he is the best thing that has happened to Kelly, but he snarls, “What’s the matter with you?”
"Have I missed anything?" |
Dai comes in with his walking stick, and enquires whether he has missed anything.
Siôn and Jinx are talking about Christmas |
As they walk along the street, Siôn asks Jinx about his Christmas, and whether he went up to North Wales. “I came back on Christmas afternoon, as my friend went to stay with his girlfriend.
"What are supposed to do between Christmas and New Year?" |
Christmas isn’t the easiest time for single people,” Jinx replies, “What are we supposed to do between now and New Year?”
Siôn raises the subject of the 'Mari Lwyd' |
Siôn informs him that some Christians still celebrate the old New Year and the ‘Mari Lwyd’, [Traditional Welsh wassailing custom involving a horse’s skull being paraded round the village] but that is mid-January. Jinx does not know much about that, and asks whether it is something people did in Bethesda.
"You Northwalians aren't as cultured as us" |
“I don’t know – you Northwalians aren’t as cultured as us,” Siôn jokes.
Kelly walks along the back street . . . |

. . . sees Jinx . . . |
when she reaches the end of the alley, she sees Jinx talking to Siôn by the bookshop, feels very uncomfortable
. . . and hurries away |
and retraces her steps.
"Everything's covered in avocados!" |
Dai has polished off his breakfast, and describes it as, “Lovely – Australians haven’t quite learned how to make a proper breakfast – everything’s covered in avocados! What’s wrong with black pudding?” Diane predicts that his breakfast will soak up all that alcohol.
“Come on, Diane – it’s Christmas, we should be enjoying ourselves,” he insists,
Dai knocks over the milk bottle |
then, as she reaches for the one-pint bottle of milk, which is unfortunately without its cap, he knocks it over.
"Are you still drunk or what?" |
“Dai, what’s wrong with you? Are you still drunk or what?” demands Jason, “What a mess – you’re worse than Ifan.” Dai points out that everyone has an accident sometimes,
"You might as well tell him, Dai" |
and as Diane mops up the milk, she points out him that he might as well tell Jason.
“He’ll find out – you can’t hide it,” she goes on,
"I have arthritis in my hands as well" |
so Dai explains that his knees are not the only things that have packed up, but he has arthritis in his hands as well. He maintains that it is not too bad, but Diane tells Jason that he will have to have an operation,
"So it is that bad" |
so Jason can see that it is in fact that bad.
"I'm not going to Deri Fawr with you" |
Dai encourages Diane to get dressed, but she insists that she is not going to Deri Fawr with him;
"DJ is giving us the grand tour" |
“DJ is giving us the grand tour, and we haven’t seen him yet.”
"I'm staying here with Jason, because he's upset" |
Diane wants to stay there with Jason, to keep him company, because he is upset.
"Just listen to her – it's easier in the long run" |
Dai sighs, “Just listen to her, will you? It’s easier in the long run,”
He leaves for Deri Fawr |
then gets up and heads for Deri Fawr.
Dani is speaking to Tyler . . . |
As Dani approaches the Deri, she is on the phone to Tyler
. . . and she sees Garry |
and sees Garry at the door of the chip shop flat. She tells him that the cops were after Eifion;
"Tyler was in a fight with Eifion" |
“Tyler was in a fight with him over Greta or something. He doesn’t want to talk about it, and Eifion has disappeared.”
"So we got away with it?" |
“Did Seren say anything afterwards” he asks, “So we got away with it then?” Dani makes it clear that they have to be careful, and says that the children are playing monopoly, while Gabriel is having a nap.
"So you've got a bit of time, then" |
“So, you’ve got a bit of time,” Garry suggests,
"Time for what?" |
and she pretends that she does not know what he is talking about.
He demonstrates his answer |
He kisses her again,
Old misery is watching . . . |
and at this point Gwyneth emerges from Megan’s shop and adopts her usual sour expression.
. . . as they go into the flat |
She watches them go into the flat.
DJ is asleep on the sofa |
DJ is sleeping on the sofa in Deri Fawr when there is a knock at the door and Dai comes in;
"Have you and Sioned been having a party?" |
“Crikey Moses!” says Dai, “Have you and Sioned been having a party? What’s this mess? Heavens above – you need to get organised, boy.
"You need to put your foot down" |
“There’s no point having a wife who can’t keep a tidy house – you need to put your foot down, no messing.”
"Sioned's at Penrhewl" |
DJ points out that Sioned is not there, but is at Penrhewl.
"You haven't fallen out again?" |
“You haven’t fallen out again?” growls Dai, “Don’t tell me you’ve bought her some cheap perfume!” he jokes, but then can see that it is something serious. “You haven’t split up, have you?” he continues,
"Wed found out she was pregnant" |
and DJ informs him that they found out Sioned was pregnant.
"I'm going to be a grandfather!" |
“I’m going to be a grandfather!” shouts Dai.
"She lost the baby, Dad!" |
DJ, with tears in his eyes, explains, “She lost the baby, Dad!”
Dai troes to console him |
and Dai hugs his son.
Iolo os on his way to Apêl Maenan . . . |
Iolo carries the black sack of clothes past Tomos ac Ellis and notices Tyler on the opposite pavement;
. . . when he notices Tyler . . . |
they briefly look at each other
. . . and then walks on |
and then Iolo continues his journey towards Megan’s shop.
"Iol, I wanted to thank you" |
“Iol, please, I wanted to say thank you – you saved my life.”
"Don't contact me again!" |
Iolo snarls, “If you think I saved your life for your own good . . . don’t contact me again!” and he goes into the shop.
"It hurts so much, Dad" |
At Deri Fawr, DJ tells his father that it hurts so much; Dai can sympathise, “People don’t think it hurts that much if the baby isn’t born – but that’s rubbish!”
"It feels as if every day is just black" |
DJ is trying to hide it, but feels as if every day is just black.
"I'm not much help to you, am I?" |
Dai confirms that is how it will be for a while; “I’m not much help to you, am I?” and DJ wonders how long it took him to get over Martha [who was stillborn two days before Christmas in 1987]. “To be completely honest with you, I’ve never got over Martha’s death – no, I haven’t – but I’ve learned to live with it.
"I still wonder what kind of girl and woman she would be" |
“I still wonder why it happened – even now. I still wonder what kind of girl and woman would she be? Would she have got married? Where would she be living, what’s her job – would she like rugby? But what I do is remember about her every year on April 10 – she should have been born on that date.
DJ listens to his father's advice |
“I think you and Sioned should do the same – choose a date and then remember the little one on that date. That baby is part of your lives now, and it’s important to mark it.”
Dani comes out of the chip shop flat . . . |
Dani emerges from the chip shop flat and says that she will text Garry;
. . . and of course Gwyneth is still lurking |
of course Gwyneth is still hanging around,
"You're back together, then?" |
and comments, “You’re back together, then – after everything that’s happened! Don’t deny it – I saw you are kissing.”
Garry demands what business is it of hers,
"I'm Gwern's mother – and he'll be gutted!" |
and she replies, “I’m Gwern’s mother, and if things go pear-shaped, he’ll be gutted!”
"Things will not go pear-shaped" |
Garry is confident that things will not go pear-shaped. “With your track record!” she sneers, “When are you going to tell Gwern?”
"We're taking it slowly" |
Dani answers that they will not at the moment, as they are taking it slowly and do not want to raise his hopes; “But I thought it won’t go pear-shaped,” Gwyneth adds, sarcastically.
Garry tells her to stop stirring “We’ll tell the children when we’re ready, and not before.
"I don't want you telling Gwern, either!" |
“And I don’t want you telling Gwern, either! I’m just asking you politely not to say anything.”
Gwyneth demands why she should do anything he says. “Because we agreed not to play games, didn’t we – for Gwern’s sake?” he growls.
"All right, I'll keep quiet" |
She agrees that she will keep quiet, and he tells her, “Now zip it!”
"He's like a hurricane around the place" |
As they clear up Ifan’s toys from the floor, Diane complains, “For a little one, he can make a huge mess,” and Jason describes him as being like a hurricane around the place. They are glad that Anita took him to the park.
"Can you give us five minutes, Diane?" |
Kelly comes in through the back door and asks Diane if she will give them five minutes;
Diane leaves them alone |
she reluctantly agrees and Kelly takes off her coat.
"I hate arguing, Jase" |
“I hate arguing,” she says, and Jason agrees that so does he.
"I'm really sorry for what Mam said" |
He is really sorry for what his mother said earlier.
“I don’t know, Jase – perhaps she’s got a point.
"I do love you" |
“I do love you.” He assures her that he feels the same, and does not know what came over him, proposing on Christmas Day like that.
"Proposing was a massive mistake" |
He acknowledges that it was a massive mistake.
"Somewhere romantic – flowers, champagne . . ." |
“I should have whisked you away to someone romantic – flowers, champagne . . .”
"Put the brakes on, Jase!" |
but she stops him there, pointing out that he is doing it again, and urges him to put the brakes on.
"I don't want to get married" |
“The proposal isn’t the problem – I don’t want to get married,” she stresses, as they put more of Ifan’s bricks into the box. He reminds her that she just said she loved him,
"That's what people usually do" |
and that is what people who love each other usually do.
"As long as you don't lie to me" |
“I’m happy with the way things are, OK? As long as you don’t lie to me,” she adds,
"If it ain't broke, why fix it?" |
“Cos, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?” He just wants everyone to know how he feels about her.
"I don't care a damn about what other people think" |
“I don’t care a damn what other people think I care about you. I care about you, Ifan and me, OK? A ring on a finger isn’t going to prove that,
"So . . . are we good?" |
“so . . . are we good?”
"We're good, Kelly" |
Jason agrees that they are indeed ‘good’.
Eileen returns after sorting out the ram |
Eileen arrives back from collecting her ram and finds Sioned and Huwi-John eating sandwiches. “Handel does go on and on!” Eileen moans,
Huwi-John has been behaving himself |
and Sioned reports that Huwi has been a good boy.
"What are these doing here?" |
On the table, Eileen finds some dolls, which Sioned reminds her are Chloe and Yasmin, which she had when she was a child.
"He wanted to see what I got from Father Christmas" |
“Huwi wanted to see what I got from Father Christmas, and he’s been playing with all afternoon.”
"He's got so many new toys . . ." |
Her mother wonders why she brought them down from the attic when he has got so many new toys. Sioned says that he has been enjoying playing with them, more than with the other toys,
". . . he has more than enough" |
Eileen appears very keen for them to go back into the attic, maintaining that Huwi has more than enough toys.
"So she took it the wrong way?" |
Over at Deri Fawr, Dai asks, “So she took it the wrong way, did she?” and DJ emphasises that he did not mean another baby would replace the one she has lost, but that is how she took it.
"I'm afraid I'm hurting her more" |
He fears that it is hurting her more.
"It's because you're the closest to her" |
“You are his Dad – she’s lashing out at you because you’re the closest to her,” Dai assures him, “But you two will be fine – I can feel it in my water.
"I can't wait to put a rugby ball in those little hands" |
“I can’t wait to put a rugby ball in those little hands – his or hers.”
“Sioned will have to forgive me before anything like that happens,” DJ grumbles, so his father instructs him to sort things out.
"She won't talk to me" |
“She won’t talk to me,” he protests, so is told he must try harder.
“I won’t get much of the welcome,” DJ predicts, and Dai demands whether he is going to sulk in the middle of this mess.
"You don't want her to come back to a pigsty" |
He encourages his son to pull up his socks, as he does not want Sioned to come back to a pigsty.
"Come on – chop, chop!" |
“Come on – chop, chop!”
Later, Iolo happens to be passing the Apêl Maenan shop once more and he sees the picture frame displayed, minus its photograph,
. . . and Iolo is tearful |
and becomes emotional again.
DJ marches purposefully . . . |
DJ strides up to the door of Penrhewl,
. . . to the door of Penrhewl . . . |
but as he puts his hand on the door-handle,
. . . but then loses his nerve |
he loses confidence and turns away again.
