1 December 2022

"Where is she, Jason?   I'm getting worried now"

Anita and Jason are sitting anxiously at home;  “Where is she, Jason?   I’m getting worried now,” she says,

"It's not the first time this has happened"

and he points out that this is not the first time this has happened.

“If she’s got herself in trouble playing blinking detectives again, I’ll be having a word with her, right?”   Anita wonders how he can say that, afraid that something terrible might have happened to her.

"I'm worried about her as well, you know"

“I’m worried about her as well, you know!” he snarls.

Jason hugs Kelly

At that moment the back door opens and Kelly walks in, to a relieved hug from Jason;  she is accompanied by Eileen.

"Where have you been, Kelly?"

“Where have you been?” he demands,

"We've been at the police station all night"

and Eileen answers that she is sorry they did not phone, but they have been at the police station all night.

Jason’s worst fears are confirmed;  “I went to a dog fight,” Kelly admits,

"Howard was the ringleader"

and Anita imagines that Howard was involved.   “Yes, he was the ringleader,” Kelly tells her.

"Sit down, Eileen"

Anita invites Eileen to sit down, but before Jason puts on the kettle,

"Are you all right, Kelly?"

he asks Kelly, “Are you all right?”

"I'm fine"

She looks at him, bewildered, and answers that she is fine.

Gaynor has brought a chocolate cake

Gaynor arrives at Maes-y-Deri, bringing a chocolate cake with her, which she thought would come in handy with a full house.

She is in an apologetic mood

She wants to apologise for the other day;  “You were right – I had no right to expect you to give me a lesson on dealing with Esther.

"I'm trying to understand"

I’m trying to understand.”

"We're not even the same race"

Vicky again points out that she comes from London and Esther comes from Uganda;  they are not even the same race.   Gaynor realises that and is sorry.

"Jinx accused me of being racist"

“The thing is, Jinx accused me of being racist – and I’m not, honest – I don’t even see Esther’s skin colour as different to mine – or yours.”

"Do you realise how racist you're being?"

Vicky is not happy about this;  “Do you realise how racist you’re being?” she snarls,

Gaynor is perplexed

and Gaynor looks very perplexed.

"And now you tell me?"

At number 9, Cassie is angry about what Tesni has just told her;  “And now you tell me?   I’m already short staffed!”

"I'm not feeling too special, Cassie"

Tesni explains that she is not feeling too special, but Cassie is not placated;  “Between you and Tegwen and your antics, I might as well run the Deri on my own.”

"And I'm sorry for having a go at you"

Tesni is also sorry for having a go at her;  Cassie stresses that she was only trying to help, and all she got was a mouthful.

"Shall I make a cup of tea?"

Gwyneth has been watching this exchange and suggests that she will make a cup of tea, as Tesni goes back upstairs.

"She's had a hard time and she's ill"

“She’s had a hard time and she’s ill,” says Gwyneth, and Cassie appreciates this, but insists there is no need to treat her like the Queen of Sheba.   She returns to the Deri.

"You should talk to Esther"

Over a cup of tea, Vicky recommends that Gaynor should talk to Esther;  “It must have been difficult for her to grow up here, with no-one to share her experiences with.”

"And she's unhappy with her hair"

Gaynor agrees, recalling that she drew a picture of the whole family here the other day, and coloured herself pink;  she is also very unhappy with her hair.

"There are lots of YouTube videos"

Vicky directs her to lots of videos on YouTube, which is where she learned about her hair;  “How did you cope with living in Cwmderi?” Gaynor sighs, and Vicky says that it was difficult, then rephrases, ‘is difficult’.

"In London, I don't feel different"

Sometimes she is the only black person in the Deri and hardly anyone understands her story – that is why she loves living in London, because she does not feel different there.

"That's exactly what I want for Esther"

That is exactly what Gaynor wants for Esther.

"Cassie likes them fresher than that"

Tegwen is buying some lemons in the shop, and Eifion comments, “If they’re for the Deri, Cassie likes them fresher than that – they’re going mouldy.”

£1.75 for a few lemons?

However, Colin charges her £1.75 for them.

Then an item of news stops them in their tracks

An item of news can be heard on the radio;  “The police are searching for a 32-year-old man in connection a crime relating to dog fighting.   Mr Howard Owen . . .”

"Mr Owen is dangerous"

Eifion immediately tells Colin to turn up the volume;  “. . . is under suspicion of organising the fights in the area recently.   The police would like to emphasise that Mr Owen is dangerous, and they ask anyone who sees him to keep their distance.”

Tegwen hurtles out of the shop . . .

Eifion has dashed out of the shop and he is quickly followed by Tegwen,

. . . which Colin finds confusing

leaving Colin looking very confused, as the report ends, “Should contact the police immediately on 080 3111.”

"OK – I'm on it!"

Kelly is on the phone;  “I wasn’t sure that I would be 100% successful, but, ta.   By tonight?   OK, I’m on it!”

"What did the boss have to say?"

Jason asks her what the boss had to say, and she says that he was as pleased as punch.

“He’s lucky you’re not suing for damages!” he maintains, “So, are we going to talk about this, or what?

"Playing Miss Marple again"

“You, Kelly, running around playing Miss Marple again.”

She has no time to answer

Before she can say anything, the door opens and Eifion comes in;

"I told you not to get involved in Howard's business"

“I told you not to get involved in Howard’s business,” he tells Kelly, who replies that she did it to get justice for him.   He is somewhat sceptical about this, suggesting, “Really?   Or to get your name on the front page of the Western Post?”

The shouting match goes on around Kelly

Jason warns him that he cannot come in there and start shouting at Kelly, but Eifion continue to shout, “It sounds like Howard is free because of you!” so Jason throws him out of the house, while Kelly stands, speechless.

"I've been looking after your son for months"

Britt goes to see Garry at the chip shop flat, where he reminds her, “I’ve been looking after your son for months – it’s only right that I get a chance to look after my own kids.”

"The best thing you can do is stay away"

She has other ideas;  “The best thing you can do for them is to stay away.     Gwern’s happy with Dani – why do you want to change things now?”

"I don't need to explain my decisions to you!"

He is adamant that he does not need to explain his decisions to her, as he pours himself a glass of ASDA orange juice.

"You're happy to raise the child of the man who tried to kill you?"

“And you’re happy to raise the child of the man who tried to kill you?” she continues.   He wonders why she cannot be happy for him;  things are going well for him for the first time in ages.

"I know you, Garry!"

“Because I know you, Garry – how can you afford to buy the chip shop back now?   You were short of cash when you sold it to us.”

He replies that he has made good investments,

"You're up to your old tricks again!"

but she is convinced that he is up to his old tricks again.

"I'm not going back to Newcastle"

“You can have as many strops as you like, but I’m not going back to Newcastle!” he informs her, “Let me know when you’re ready to sell the chip shop back to me, like we agreed.

"It's going to be win-win for the three of us"

“It’s going to be win-win for the three of us.”

Britt does not agree with him

She is not inclined to go along with this.

"Are you all right, Kelly?"

Kelly is busily typing on the laptop and Jason asks if she is all right;  she does not reply

"You're in no state to write anything now"

so he points out, “Don’t take any notice of Eifion – you know what he’s like.   Right, you’re in no state to write anything now, are you?

"Do you want to go for a walk?"

“The boss can wait for his article – do you want to go for a walk?”

"I'm writing my resigntaion letter"

=At last Kelly speaks, “I’m not writing the article – I’m writing my resignation letter.”

"I can't pretend I'm not happy to hear that"

Jason cannot pretend that he is not happy to hear that, and she continues, “Everything is my fault.”

"You did what you thought was right at the time, Kelly"

Jason protests that she did what she thought was right at the time, but again insists that they do need to talk about it.   “We can’t keep doing this –

"I prefeerred the Kelly who made cakes and served coffee"

“you gave me a real fright last night – I didn’t know where you were – what you doing – what had happened to you, again!   I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time now – and I know you don’t want to hear it – I think I preferred the Kelly who made cakes and served coffee.   Sorry, I know it wasn’t as exciting as this is nonsense, but it was a lot less stressful.”

"Well done, Jase, for making this about you!"

She closes the laptop, remarking, “Do you know what?   Well done, Jase – well done for making this about you!

"Someonen who was going to do God knows what"

“I was with someone last night who was going to do God knows what – but it’s all about you!”

"I'm sorry, Kelly"

He says he is sorry,

"I don't want to talk about it!"

but Kelly does not want him to touch her and does not want to talk about it.   As he puts on his jacket he makes it clear to her that whatever she decides, he will be there for her;

"I'll always be here for you – because I love you"

“I’ll always be here for you, supporting you – because I love you.”

As he opens the door to leave, she calls his name, and,

"Wait for me, Jase"

turning with tears in her eyes, asks him, “Wait for me.”

"Mam?"

Tesni is asleep on the sofa at number 9 when she wakes up, muttering, “Mam?” and then, realising what she has said, apologises to Gwyneth.

"Sorry – I don't know why I said that"

“I don’t know why I said that,” she apologises,

"Is there anything I can do?"

and Gwyneth asks how Tesni is feeling, and whether there is anything she can do.

"Mam used to run me a bath"

Tesni recalls that her mother used to run her a bath;  “I remember one time I’d run out of my favourite bath bomb, and I was having a bad flare-up,” as she is obviously having at the moment,

"She drove all the way to Carmarthen"

“She drove all the way to Carmarthen to get me some – I never thanked her properly for that –

"I was so lucky to have a mother like her"

“I was such a brat!   I was so lucky to have her as a mother.”

Guilt-stricken, Gwyneth will go and run a bath for Tesni,

Tesni collapses in pain

who gets up from the sofa, but on her way across the room, collapses in pain.

"Phone an ambulance!"

“Phone an ambulance!” she tells Gwyneth.

They discuss last night's events

In the Deri they are talking about what happened last night;  “I wouldn’t like to think what could have happened to her,” says Cassie, and Mark asks if she knew that Howard was Tegwen’s sister.

Kelly comes in

Then Kelly comes in, accompanied by Jason and Eileen;

"Cwmderi's own Wonder Woman!"

“Here she is – Cwmderi’s own Wonder Woman!” Mark exclaims.

"You've got a cheek, showing your face in here!"

When he sees Tegwen, who is next to arrive, his attitude changes;  “Crikey – you’ve got a cheek, showing your face in here, after what your brother did!”

"Leave it, Mark!"

Eileen tells him to leave it;  “What’s important is that we all stick together and Kelly tells everyone about this scandal.”

"I'm willing to share Howard's story"

Tegwen volunteers that if Kelly needs any help, she is willing to share Howard’s story.

"You don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with"

Jason makes it quite clear that Kelly does not have to do anything she is not comfortable with doing, but Tegwen just believes that the more publicity that is out there, the better the chance that the police will find him.

"I can't let everyone down again"

Jason asks if Kelly is sure that she wants to do this, and she replies, “I can’t let everyone down again.”

Jason holds her tightly

He holds her close.

"Where are you going?"

Colin returns home, having forgotten his phone, and is surprised to see that Britt is wearing her coat and has packed a bag.

"I'm going to Newcastle to look after Aaron"

“I’m going to Newcastle to look after Aaron.   I spoke to Garry, but it’s no use – he doesn’t give a damn about Aaron.”

"We're going to the cinema and that burger place"

Colin is worried about how long she will be staying, and she does not know the answer to that.   “Whoa – we’re going to the cinema and that burger place tonight,” he objects, and she is sorry about that, so he decides that he will go with her.

"We need the money"

“You can’t do that – you’ve got a job and we need the money,” she insists, so he wants to know where that leaves the two of them.

"Don't be so dramatic – you'll be fine"

“Don’t be so dramatic – you’ll be fine,” she tells him.

He is not so sure that he can handle losing her as well, but Britt’s mind is on other things at the moment;

"I'll have to pack a hot water bottle"

“I think I’ll have to pack a hot water bottle – it’s going to be freezing up there, and I won’t have you to warm me up.”

Colin is upset about this

She gives him a kiss, but he is obviously far from happy about the situation.

Eifion comes to apologise

Eifion comes into the Deri and finds Eileen at the bar;  “I want to apologise to you – I didn’t realise what you were trying to do with Howard,” he says.   She confesses that she did not really know what she was doing,

"I was determined to get revenge"

but she was determined to get revenge for everything Howard did,

She will buy him a drink

and she offers to get him a drink.

"Just in time – Eileen's paying"

Iolo comes in and Eifion comments, “Just in time –Eileen’s buying!”

Cassie has a very rapid turnover of barmen

Cassie tells them that Cai (not another one?) will serve them, and she hurries out of the pub.

"Sorry for ignoring your texts"

“Listen, I’m sorry for ignoring your texts,” says Eifion to Iolo,

"Sorry for talking to Kelly about you"

and receives an apology for Iolo talking to Kelly about him.   “It’s all right – water under the bridge – we all make mistakes, don’t we?”

"Do you know where Tesni's hairbrush is?"

Cassie gets home to number 9 just as Gwyneth dashes downstairs with a bag, and asks where Tesni’s hairbrush is.

"Can't madam find her own hairbrush?"

“Can’t madam find her own brush?” Cassie demands,

"She's in hospital, with Colitis"

and is informed that she is in hospital, having had a pretty nasty bout of Colitis.

Gwyneth is waiting to hear from the doctor, and asks if they should contact her father or Guto.

"It's best to talk to the doctor first"

Cassie thinks it best to talk to the doctor first.

Gaynor passes the bookshop and notices . . .

Gaynor is walking past the bookshop

. . . Mark and Vicky coming out of the Deri

when she sees Mark hobbling out of the Deri with Nicky;

"I wonder what the secret is?"

Garry catches up with her, and she comments that Mark and Vicky have a great relationship.   “I wonder what the secret is?”

"You're asking the wrong guy"

Garry considers that she is probably asking the wrong guy, acknowledging that he has not been the best parent.   “Nor me,” adds Gaynor, then gets out her phone and makes a call.

Gaynor is still determined to move Esther from the school

“Hiya, Anna – it’s me – about the conversation we had the other day, I think I’m going to go ahead with the application to move Esther to another school.”

Britt is about to get into the taxi . . .

Britt comes out of number 21, where a taxi has just arrived,

. . . as Garry watches from across the road

and Garry is surprised to see her.

Britt hugs Colin

She hopes that she has got everything and gives Colin a hug;  he does not want her to go, but she promises to phone as soon as she gets there.

"I'm going to Newcastle!"

Then she notices Garry on the other side of the road;  “I’m going to Newcastle because you’re staying here?” she snarls,

"You can have the chip shop, if you really want it"

“And you can have the chip shop, too, if you really want it.”

Garry finds this amusing

Colin waves to Britt as the taxi drives away,

"Yeah – you smile, good boy!"

looks across at Garry and growls, “Yeah – you smile, good boy!   You can stay with your kids, but my kids – they’re gone –

"Now my wife has gone as well . . ."

“and now my wife has gone as well –

". . . because of you!"

“because of you!”

Colin slams the door

He goes back into the house and slams the door.
