13 December 2022

Anita is walking along the street . . .

In the High Street, we notice that the ‘For Sale’ sign is still fixed to number 10.   Anita is hurrying past the shop when she notices something in the window;

. . . and notices something

‘Sign here to join the Santa Race.   (Date to be confirmed.   Sponsored by Cae Glas and the Village Shop)’.

She calls Tyler across

Tyler is outside APD, so she calls him across,

"It's being sponsored by Cae Glas and the shop"

complaining, “Have you seen this?   The Santa Race – and it’s being sponsored by Cae Glas and the shop!”

"So what?"

He cannot see anything wrong with that,

"Nobody told APD we could sponsor it"

so she goes on, “Nobody told APD we could sponsor the race – it’s good publicity and we need every contract we can get.”

Tyler was under the impression that APD was doing well, but she insists that they are still looking for work;

"You don't care about APD's reputation"

“But you obviously don’t care about APD’s reputation.”   He makes it clear that his videos have nothing to do with APD now, and she warns him to make sure he keeps it that way.

"Thinking about it – you're too old!"

Tyler’s parting comment is, “Remember to subscribe – actually, thinking about it, you’re too old!”

This does not go down well with Anita

Iolo comes round the corner and wonders what Tyler was saying.

"Your ex-husband is making horrible videos!"

“Did you know that your ex-husband was making horrible videos in APD?” Anita demands, which rather intrigues Iolo.

"Thanks for everything you're doing"

Tempers appear to have cooled down at Cysgod y Glyn, where Ffion thanks Jinx for everything he is doing to help her;  she emphasises that she does appreciate it.

He simply hopes that he does not regret taking over this Santa Race,

"I think you might regret it!"

and she grimaces, “I think you might!”

"Arwen's really looking forward to the show"

He adds that Arwen is really looking forward to the show tonight, and asks what it is called again.

“Oh yeah – about that, can you take her?” she pleads,

"I've still got so much to do"

“I’ve still got so much to do before tomorrow – I don’t know where to start.”

"You're not serious?"

“You’re not serious?” he groans, “After that chat we had?”   Ffion stresses that she wants to put Arwen first, but this inspection is important.   She is sure that everything will be easier once it is out of the way.

“Please, Jinx, this is the last thing, I promise,” she whines,

"You're the one who will disappoint Arwen"

but he is adamant that she should take her daughter.   “I can’t – and we don’t want to disappoint her.”   He makes it very clear that it is she who will disappoint Arwen, not him.

"Dad, can you pick Greta up?"

Siôn is just collecting a takeaway coffee from the Deri when Iolo rushes in;  “Dad, can you pick Greta up from the after-school club?   I have to discuss something with Tyler – I’ll only be half an hour.”   Siôn points out that he has things to do, but if it is only half an hour, he will do so.

"She can help rearrange the children's books"

Greta can help him reorganise the children’s books in Y Winllan.

"Do you like this one?"

DJ carries over two drinks to where Sioned is sitting;  she has been looking at buggies on her phone, and asks if he likes one particular model.

"Shame about the price"

“Yes – it’s just a shame about the price,” he replies, “You could get it for half that price if you bid online.”

"You're obsessed"

Sioned accuses him of being obsessed, but he insists that they could save a fortune.   “This has the best reviews, and the style is nice, isn’t it?” she continues, and proceeds to the checkout, regardless of what DJ thinks.

"I wish my mother was still around"

“You do notice things when you’re expecting a baby, like grandparents helping out,” DJ comments, “Siôn’s going to pick Greta up now – I wish my mother was still around to see the baby.”

"Me too!"

Sioned coldly replies, “Me too!” and he points out that her mother lives only just up the road.   She glares at him, so he reminds her that they need help, and do not know anything about babies.   “We know enough – we’ve looked after Huwi-John loads of times,” she snaps.

DJ does miss little Huwi-John,

"The little boy who's stolen my inheritance?"

but Sioned growls, “The little boy who’s stolen my inheritance?   I don’t!”   She receives confirmation of the purchase and tells DJ, “See – that was a lot easier than some bidding war, wasn’t it?”

"No point arguing"

DJ seems to be losing the will to argue with her.

"It's not pornography"

Iolo goes to number 7, where Tyler explains, “It’s not pornography,” so is asked whether he wears clothes.   “Sometimes my top is off or my shirt’s open,” answers Tyler.

"Do you have to, Ty?"

“Do you have to, Ty?   How would Greta feel if she saw you doing disgusting things on the Internet?”

"I'm not doing anything disgusting"

Tyler maintains that he is not doing anything disgusting, and in any case Greta will not see the videos.   “Once it’s out there, it’s out there for ever!   Wear your clothes!” Iolo instructs him, but he insists that people like to see a bit of skin.

"What kind of people – perverts who pay?"

“What kind of people – perverts who pay?   Are you honestly saying you’re OK with that?” Iolo demands.

"I'm earning money"

Tyler simply shrugs his shoulders and remarks that he is earning money.

"Haven't you ever bought a poster of a good-looking bloke?"

“Haven’t you ever bought a poster of a good-looking bloke?   You watch films because of who’s in them – Thor, Captain America – this is the same thing,” alleges Tyler, but Iolo disagrees,

"Homophobes could find out where you live!"

concerned that homophobes and weirdos could find out where he lives.

He accuses Iolo of being paranoid, but is called irresponsible, and when Tyler maintains that it is nothing to do with him, shouts, “Greta’s here half the week – she could be in danger!”

"Just leave me alone!"

Tyler simply wants to be left alone and orders Iolo to leave.

"Just think about what you're doing"

On his way out of the door, Iolo advises, “Just think about what you’re doing.

Jinx approaches the pizzeria . . .

Jinx is approaching his pizza shop

. . . and ignores a call from Petra

when he receives a phone call from Petra, which he ignores.   Eileen angrily comes across the road;

"I don't believe this!"

“I don’t believe this!” she snarls, and pulls down the Santa Race poster from the door of APD.

"I'm taking my poster back"

Cassie is coming out at that moment and Anita wonders what Eileen is doing;  “I’m taking my poster back!” is the reply, “Someone stole it from the shop.

Now the arguments start . . .

Anita makes the reason very clear;  “Because someone decided to promote themselves without considering other businesses.”

. . . and Jinx cannot make his voice heard

Jinx tries to intervene here, but Eileen points out that the shop is giving the winner a bottle of champagne.   Anita sneers, “You can buy that at the cash-and-carry, cost price – APD could offer a prize as well.”

"A piece of MDF, perhaps?"

Eileen suggests, “A piece of MDF, perhaps?”

"I think the Deri should sponsor it"

Cassie gets involved and would like the Deri to be represented in the sponsorship, too.   Anita says that the Deri will benefit anyway, because everyone will drink there after the race.

"I've sorted everything with Ffion"

Eileen attempts to bring this argument to a close, stressing that she has sorted everything out with Ffion.

“Oh, I see – perhaps we should all be school governors, then!” Anita suggests, “So that we can all have favours.”

Might as well give up, Jinx, mate

Jinx once again tries to explain the situation, but the three ladies all go their separate ways.

"Garry asked me to read Dani's essay . . ."

Siôn pays a visit to Llwyncelyn, and points out to Gaynor that Garry asked him to read Dani’s essay;

". . . it's excellent, you know"

“It’s excellent, you know – the writing is incredibly good.   It’s clear and concise and it flows naturally.”   Gaynor regards that as proof that Izzy’s Scholarship has gone to the right person.

"Her application was not of a high quality"

As she makes a cup of tea, he goes on, “The standard is a lot better than the essay she wrote for her application – that wasn’t of a high quality, if you remember.”

"She must have worked hard to improve"

Gaynor maintains that she must have worked hard to improve, but Siôn can only think that she has had a lot of help, perhaps a tutor, and they will have to ask her.

"You don't want to undermine her confidence"

Gaynor is not in favour of this approach;  “You don’t want to undermine her confidence.”   Siôn says they have to make sure she knows the rules about plagiarism and fraud in the academic world,

"That's bit dramatic, Siôn"

but is told that it is a bit dramatic.

"The university is bound to have noticed"

“If I’ve noticed a difference in her work, the university is bound to,” he adds, but Gaynor stresses that the essay has to be in today and Dani cannot change things;  Siôn is adamant, “If she has cheated – and I emphasise the ‘if’ – she’ll have to.”

"I did help – a little"

Gaynor is forced to confess that she did help – a little;  “I corrected the language, some of the expressions, and I helped a little with the structure.”   He wonders if Dani did anything, but is told that it was just a bit of guidance.

"So you wrote it?"

“So you wrote it?” is Siôn’s conclusion, “You can’t write an essay for someone else!”

"I'll get her to 'tone it down' a bit"

Gaynor says that she will phone Dani and get her to ‘tone it down’ a bit.

"Tell her not to submit it!"

“That’s not the point – tell her not to submit it!” he rages, “Now – before it’s too late!”

"There's no answer"

She has little chance but to agree;  then she alleges that there is no answer.

Iolo arrives at the Deri flat

Dani is actually sitting in front of the laptop, agonising over whether or not to send ‘her’ essay, when Iolo dashes in;  “Dan, I didn’t know who else to talk to –

"Have you heard about Tyler's videos?"

“have you heard about Tyler’s videos – he’s putting videos of himself, half-naked, on the Internet.”

Dani, who has until now been taking little notice, is now paying attention;

"Trousers, shirt, pants?"

“And where will it stop – shirt, trousers, pants?” Iolo goes on.

“I don’t want to know what Tyler does in his spare time,” she answers, but Iolo is concerned about how this could affect Greta.   Dani protests that she does not have the time at the moment, but he insists, “This is important!”

"It's nothing to do with me"

“What do you want me to do?” she snarls, “It’s nothing to do with me!”   Iolo reminds her that Tyler is her brother, but she maintains, “I can’t tell him what to do – you’ll just have to trust him.”

"Am I the only one who thinks what he's doing is wrong?"

“Am I the only one who thinks what Tyler’s doing is wrong?” growls Iolo as he leaves the flat.

Dani submits the essay . . .

Dani tries to regain her confidence in order to respond to the instructions on the screen, ‘Submit your essay below’,

. . . and hopes she has done the right thing

then does so, resulting in the message, ‘File has been successfully uploaded’.

She picks up her phone and dials Gaynor’s number,

"I wanted to know how things are going"

as Siôn is about to leave Llwyncelyn.   “Did you try and phone me?” Dani asks, and Gaynor wanted to know how things were going with the essay.

"I've just sent it off now"

“I’ve just sent it off now – it’s a relief, you know – thanks for your help.

"You've sent the essay?"

Gaynor reports to Siôn that she has sent the essay,

"We must contact the university!"

and he is determined that they now have no choice but to contact the University;  “You and Dani may have done something that’s illegal!   I want no part of it!”

Cassie puts the poster on the bar

Cassie comes into the Deri, where Garry is behind the bar;  she puts down one of the Santa Race posters and he protests, “Whoa – no way am I running in any race!” and when she maintains that it is good for the business,

"Well, it isn't good for me!"

he replies, “Well, it isn’t good for me.”

"I can't look after you and a new baby"

Over in their armchairs, DJ asks Sioned, “What if you’re ill afterwards, or you need a Caesarian?   I can’t look after you and a new baby.”

"We'll sort that out when it happens"

She is confident that they will sort it out when it happens, but he points out that they do not have any friends who can help.

"Can't see Mathew or Rhys changing nappies"

“I can’t see Mathew or Rhys changing nappies, can you?   Girls need their mothers at times like this.”

Sioned puts a stop to the conversation

She does not want to talk about it any more.

"What's this doing here?"

Anita comes in and sees the poster on the bar;  “What’s this doing here?   Did you steal it?”

"We have a righty to benefit"

Cassie points out that they have the right to benefit from the publicity of this race, which angers Anita,

Jinx is wishing he had not got involved

and she calls for Jinx, who is sitting quietly nearby, to back her up, but again he does not get the chance to comment.

"It's only a race"

Garry insists that it is only a race, but she continues, “It’s what it represents that’s important.”

"Just stop bickering!"

Jinx tells them to stop bickering, adding that Ffion has asked him to organise the race for her – and it is intended to bring people together at Christmas;  “Shame on you for arguing!”

"Quite right, Gandhi!"

Garry agrees with this, referring to Jinx as ‘Gandhi’.

"What are we going to do about the sponsorship?"

“What are we supposed to do about the sponsorship?” demands Anita,

"Sort out your problems and grow up!"

and Jinx warns them to sort out their problems and grow up, or there will be no race.

"I suppose we could share"

Anita’s stance then softens, and she supposes that they could share.   Cassie proposes they have a gin to celebrate;

"Put Garry's name down on that poster"

“Put Garry’s name down on that poster, will you?” she adds.

Eileen is approaching Sioned and DJ

As Sioned and DJ come out of the Deri, they notice Eileen walking towards them, and he tells Sioned, “We can’t carry on like this.”

"Could we see Huwi-John?"

Then he asks Eileen, “We just wanted to ask if we could see Huwi-John.”

“Oh, you want to see your brother, do you?” Eileen asks, sarcastically.   Sioned replies that DJ said he had not seen the boy for a while.

"You're welcome to come to Penrhewl"

“You’re welcome to come to Penrhewl – text before you come,” her mother tells her.

"I'd prefer to take him to the Deri"

Sioned would prefer to take him to the Deri, as he loves their fish and chips.

"It would save me cooking for him"

“Well, it would save me cooking for him I suppose,”says Eileen.

"Will you join us, Eileen?"

However when DJ asks if Eileen will join them as well,

There is a resounding "NO!"

both she and Sioned answer in unison, “NO!”

"Don't try that again, DJ!"

Sioned warns him not to try that again.

"You had no right to make me feel like that"

Gaynor goes to see Siôn, and points out that plagiarism is not illegal;  “You had no right to make me feel like that,” she says,

"It's against the university's rules"

but he explains that it is against the university’s rules and is therefore fraud.

She accuses him of overreacting, but he makes it clear, “You should not have written Dani’s essay.”

"Who are you to tell me what I can do?"

“Who are you to tell me what I can do? she demands, and he reminds her that he sponsored the scholarship, and has a duty to do the right thing.   “Well, it’s too late – and Izzy’s name would be dragged through the dirt,” she goes on.

"You should know better"

“And whose fault is that?” he asks, “You should know better.”

"Think of what it will do to Dani"

She urges him to think of what it will do to Dani,

Siôn's 'principles' see to be remarkably flexible

but he is not willing to compromise his principles (although a few years ago it will be recalled that he was stealing a large amount of money from Bethania).

"Think very carefully, Siôn"

She wants him to think very carefully before doing anything;  “For an old friend?”

Ffion is working at home

Ffion is working at home when Jinx returns;

"You didn't take her, did you?"

“You didn’t take her, did you?” he groans, but she points out that Arwen went, which is the important thing.

"Cai took her"

“Who did you force to take her, then?” he continues, and when told that it was Cai, he snarls, “You didn’t let her go with that idiot?”

“I needed someone to take her and Cai was willing to help,” Ffion answers, then she receives a phone call from them.

"Hospital"   Is she all right?"

“Are you on your way back?   Hospital?   Is she all right?

"I'll be there now!"

“OK, I’ll be there now!”

She tells Jinx that Arwen fell on the way out of the theatre and hit her head;  they are on their way to A&E now.

"I said he was an idiot!"

“I said he was an idiot!” Jinx sighs, but she tells him to shut up.

Dani is relaxing

Dani is sitting on the sofa, sipping a drink when Siôn arrives;

"Sorry its so late"

he apologises for calling so late.   “I’m celebrating submitting my essay,” she proudly informs him,

"Because I am on my own"

“On my own, because I am on my own – unless you want one?”

"Gaynor told me she helped you"

“Gaynor told me she had helped you with the essay,” he says,

"She's helped me loads – and so have you"

and Dani acknowledges that Gaynor helped her loads, to be honest, as has Siôn, and she is very grateful.

“After these last few years, things are starting to get better for me and the children.

"Who would have thought I'd do a university course?"

“Who would have thought I’d ever do a university course?”   At this moment Gabriel can be heard over the baby monitor,

"I just wanted to congratulate you"

and Siôn thinks that he had better go, maintaining that he just wanted to congratulate her.   She thanks him for everything,

"I'm coming, Gabriel"

and prepares to go and see to Gabriel.

Another video is about to start

At number 7, Tyler is lining up his phone for another photo shoot when there is a knock at the door;

"Come to have another go at me?"

“Come to have another go at me, have you?” he growls at Iolo, but he has actually come to collect Greta’s school bag.

Iolo notices the phone poised for action

Then Iolo notices the phone all ready for action;

"I know what I'm doing, all right?"

“I know what I’m doing, all right?” says Tyler.

"Remember the swastika – the 'PAEDO'?"

“Do you remember that time when we woke up and found a swastika painted on the house?   And what about that time when ‘Paedo’ was written on the house?” enquires Iolo, I don’t want it to happen again, Ty – Greta deserves better!   Greta is my priority.”

"At least one father puts her first"

Tyler asked what he is trying to suggest, and is informed that at least one father puts her first;  with that Iolo leaves the house,

Tyler is made to think . . .

and it appears that Tyler has been made to think about his actions.

. . . as he looks at a photo of Greta

He picks up a photograph of Greta.
