"I need a gun!" |
In the Deri flat, Dylan is on the phone, stressing to someone, “I need a gun! Great – phone me back immediately!”
Dani is listening |
He is unaware that Dani is standing in the doorway, listening.
"Don't say you're serious?" |
“Don’t say you’re serious?” she demands, “Please tell me you’re not serious,”
"I have to keep us safe, Dani!" |
but he insists that he has no choice, as someone out there wants revenge, and he has to keep them safe.
Security upgrade completed |
At number 10, Mathew has just finished installing additional security devices to the front door; “No-one will be able to break in through that now.”
"Don't tell anyone, Mathew" |
She urges him not to tell anyone; “I feel so stupid.” He points out that he will not say a word, but also that she is not stupid.
"Can't be too careful with the murderer still around" |
Mark is passing, and comments, “New lock, is it? You can’t be too careful with the murderer still around.” Mathew advises Anita not to take any notice of him, maintaining that the killer must be miles away by now. Anita tries to maintain that the lock was stiff, and that is all.
Gwyneth keeps an eye on proceedings |
Gwyneth is on the other side of the road and waves to Anita, who quickly goes back into the house. “Hey – did you have to say that now?” Mathew growls at Mark, who replies that it is the truth.
"They could be amongst us now" |
They do not know where the culprit is, and that they could be amongst the villagers now.
“Come on, Mark, you don’t honestly think someone we know could kill Jaclyn, do you?” Mathew demands, and at that moment,
Mark catches sight of Andrea coming out of the dress shop.
Andrea catches sight of Mark |
As she walks towards them,
"You think you know someone . . ." |
Mark says, “That’s the thing – you think you know someone, and they turn out to be a completely different person.”
Andrea sees him walking away |
With that he walks away, and Andrea looks disappointed.
In the Deri flat, Dani is squealing, “What if the kids find it? It happened before with Britt.”
Dylan is confident that will not happen, and is losing his temper;
"Someone is waiting for their opportunity" |
he shouts, “Listen to me now – someone, somewhere is just waiting for their opportunity and I have to be ready for them!”
Gwyneth is here again |
They do not appear to have noticed someone coming rather noisily up the stairs; it is none other than Gwyneth, and she detects the very strained atmosphere in the room.
"I called to say hello to Gwern" |
She has called in to say hello to Gwern,
"I'll go and check where he is" |
and Dani will check where he is;
"How's Tesni?" |
Dylan eyes Gwyneth suspiciously and asks about Tesni. “She’s all right, you know, considering.
"She's decided to write a tribute" |
“She’s started organising the funeral and has decided to write a tribute,” Gwyneth tells him, “She thought it was important for people to know her mother’s true character. That’s nice, isn’t it?”
Dylan is very concerned, asking if she has mentioned what she is going to say.
"She wants everyone to hear it at the same time" |
“No, I think she intends to wait until the funeral so that everyone hears it at the same time,” is the reply.
"Gwern's playing the X-box online" |
Dani advises that Gwern is playing the X-box online with a friend, so will not come out of his room, so Gwyneth will come back another time.
"No more nonsense about a gun – OK?" |
Dani instructs Dylan, “No more nonsense about a gun – OK?” but he has no intention of complying with that.
Cai sleeps off another hangover |
Cai is sleeping off another drinking session on the sofa in the shop flat and Tegwen throws a cushion at him;
Tegwen wakes him with a well-aimed cushion |
“Oh, you were sleeping so sweetly there,” she remarks, and Mathew deduces that he had a hell of a session with Rhys last night. Cai’s phone sounds and he picks it up with difficulty; Tegwen imagines that it is a hot date, but he says that it is Siôn.
"I hope you're in better shape tonight" |
“I hope you’re in better shape tonight,” says Mathew,
"I shall be fine by then" |
but Tegwen urges him not to say that, as she is determined to win. Cai is confident that he will be fine by then, but he does not look very fine at the moment.
"Nain always had a whisky with honey in it" |
Cassie recommends, “Nain always had a whisky with honey in it before bed – she said she slept like a log.” Anita points out that she has no trouble sleeping,
"I need it for a recipé" |
but maintains that she needs the whisky for a recipé.
"I hope that nonsense with Britt didn't upset you" |
Gwyneth, who is also at the bar, hopes that the nonsense with Britt did not upset her last night.
Anita lies, “No – I didn’t notice anything.”
"Using Jaclyn's death like that!" |
Cassie regards it as disgraceful, using Jaclyn’s death like that and saying there was a ghost in the house.
Now she is even more unsettled |
This adds to Anita’s discomfiture, and she leaves the Deri.
Cai enters the bookshop, and is faced by Siôn’s questions; “Where have you been?
"Don't tell me – I can smell it!" |
“Don’t tell me – I can smell it! When are you going to grow up?
"Have you talked to Ffion about the book order?" |
“Have you talked to Ffion about the school book order?”
"You said you would sort it out" |
Cai has forgotten all about that; “You said you can sort all that out – that the headteacher has enough to do at the start of term, and that she would be glad?” Siôn reminds him, “I can get a great deal from the supplier – you won’t find them cheaper anywhere else.”
Siôn objects to the overpowering smell of alcohol |
Before Cai can do anything else, he is told to open the door, as the place smells like a brewery.
"Keep an eye on my equipment, Cassie" |
In the Deri, Hywel asks if Cassie will keep an eye on his equipment, which is all ready for the quiz.
"Why aren't you answering my calls?" |
Andrea has at last tracked down Mark, who is sitting at the bar. “Why aren’t you answering my calls?” she demands, “Have I done something?”
"How could you, Andrea?" |
He confesses that he met Alex, who told him everything; “How could you, Andrea?”
"You don't understand, Mark" |
She says that it is complicated and that he does not understand. “No, I don’t – I would never be able to walk out on my mother like that!” he replies,
"It's obvious I don't know you at all" |
“It’s obvious I don’t know you at all – I don’t know if I want to, either.”
Andrea is very troubled |
So saying, he gets up and walks out, leaving Andrea very troubled.
As he sits in the bookshop, Cai’s phone sounds again and he announces that he has to go.
"You haven't told me how many books to order" |
“You haven’t told me how many books to order,” complains Siôn, and is told to order what they usually have. He has to get changed before this ‘stupid quiz’.
"We're not open" |
As he leaves, Dylan comes in and is told by Siôn that they are not open; “I want a word about Tesni,” says Dylan,
"Has she talked to you about Jacs' funeral?" |
“Has she talked to you about Jacs’ funeral?”
He is told that if Tesni wants him to know, she will tell him.
"Has she said anything about the tribute?" |
Dylan is not giving up, but asks, “Has she said anything about the tribute?”
"I'm sure she has her reasons" |
Siôn points out, “If Tesni hasn’t told you, I’m sure she has her reasons.” Dylan marches angrily out of the shop.
"Tegwen must very popular" |
In the Deri, Cassie comments that Tegwen must be very popular, as several girls have turned out to support her. Hywel is becoming impatient because Tegwen has not yet turned up; he is told by Mathew that she is dropping off Ken with some friends.
Cai has also not turned up, and Mathew explains that he was in a terrible state earlier;
"He'd been out on the booze with Rhys" |
“He’d been out on the booze with Rhys until the early hours.”
"I didn't know they were such good mates" |
Hywel had not realised that they were such good mates.
Cai eventually arrives |
Cai eventually comes in through the door, although Hywel had thought he had cold feet.
Tegwen has bad news for Mathew |
Tegwen rings Mathew to advise that Ken has been taken ill, and she cannot make it.
"She knew she'd lose!" |
Of course, cocky Cai, sneers, “She knew she’d lose – at least she won’t be embarrassed,” and does not believe the story about Ken being ill.
"That means I win, doesn't it?" |
“Anyway, this forfeit means that I win, doesn’t it, Hywel?” Cai continues,
"I'll take Tegwen's place!" |
but Mathew volunteers to take Tegwen’s place in the quiz. “You don’t know anything about rugby!” Cai laughs.
Gwyneth turns up at number 10 again |
Gwyneth is at number 10 yet again, this time with lavender and CBD tea; she assures Anita that she should not worry, as the tea is completely legal. “If this doesn’t send you to sleep, nothing will,” she says.
"I've lived in the house for years – but now . . ." |
“Do you know what? I have lived in this house happily for years – but now . . .” Anita sighs.
"You have to concentrate on the good times" |
She is told that is what she has to concentrate on – the good times.
"But when it starts getting dark . . ." |
“I’m fine in the day – but when it starts getting dark – you know what they say – that there’s an atmosphere in places where tragedies have happened.”
Anita recalls, “There was a workhouse where I grew up, and people said they could hear children’s voices and things –
"Listen to me – I'm scaring myself!" |
“listen to me – I’m scaring myself!” she adds, “I’m no better than Britt, am I?”
"I'll spend the night here, if you want" |
Gwyneth helpfully offers to spend the night in the house with if that would make her feel better. Anita refuses the offer, maintaining that she will be all right with what Gwyneth has brought over.
“If you’re sure – but you can phone me at any time –
"In the middle of the night, if you want" |
“in the middle of the night if you want,” Gwyneth goes on, and is told that she is the only one who is paying any attention.
"Don't tell anyone how stupid I've been" |
Anita adds, “But Gwyneth, don’t tell anyone else, will you, how stupid I’ve been?” Gwyneth promises not to say a word, but stresses that Anita is not being stupid.
The quiz is nearing its end |
The quiz has evidently been under way for some time, as Mathew is being asked who was the Scarlet’s captain last season.
"Hah – that's easy!" |
Cai of course maintains that this is easy, but Mathew has to give it some thought and comes up with Jonathan Davies. Then Cai is asked who was the youngest player to score a try for Wales, which he can answer with no trouble.
Mathew is asked how many Welsh caps did Shane Williams win, and is really floundering here,
"Eighty -seven?" |
and simply guesses at 87, which is the correct answer.
"The last round – women's rugby" |
Hywel announces that Cai is at present one point ahead and they reach the last round – which is about women’s rugby.
"Women? We didn't agree to that!" |
“Women? We didn’t agree to that!” Cai immediately protests, but is reminded of what he said earlier, that rugby is rugby, and it does not matter who is playing. He is getting worried now, and asks to be allowed a toilet break.
"Getting worried, are you?" |
“Is the competition making you nervous?’” Hywel wonders, and grants them five minutes.
Hywel should know better than to leave the questions around |
On his way to the toilet, Cai takes a crafty look at Hywel’s list of questions, which has rather carelessly been left on view.
"I just want to try and explain" |
Andrea goes to number 7 to confront Mark; “I just want a chance to try and explain,” she says,
"You could not look after your own mother" |
and he cannot understand how she has been able to spend weeks helping his Mam and doing so much for her, but she could not look after her own mother.
"It's not that simple, Mark" |
Andrea replies that it was not that simple, but he points out, “She was ill – she needed you – it seems simple enough to me.” She asks if he can imagine how difficult it was for her; she was a schoolgirl and had to look after her mother for years.
"I just couldn't face it any more" |
“I just couldn’t face it any more,” she says;
"You're not a schoolgirl now" |
Mark reminds her that she is no longer a schoolgirl, and that her family still needs her. “No, they’re better off without me,” she groans.
"Do you know why Alex has been phoning you?" |
“Do you know why Alex has been phoning you?” he asks,
"To make me feel guilty, I expect" |
and she suspects that it is to make her feel guilty.
"Your Mam doesn't have much time left" |
“No, it’s about your Mam, Andrea – she doesn’t have much time left.”
This comes as a shock |
Andrea looks shocked to hear this.
Another crafty look . . . |
Cai returns from the toilet and has another crafty look at the questions,
. . . and a photograph |
this time taking a surreptitious photo of them with his phone,
"Sorry, I have to take this call" |
and then insists that he has to take a phone call, which is about work.
"The book order, is it?" |
“Yes, the book order, is it?” he says, and goes outside to continue the call;
He goes outside . . . |
Mathew thinks there is something underhand going on, and follows Cai outside, as he continues the pretence, “If I order them today, would they arrive by . . .”
. . . and looks at the questions |
As there is no-one around, he instead takes a look at the photo of the quiz questions.
"What are you doing, Cai?" |
Mathew catches him in the act and demands what he is doing; Cai continues the excuse of a book order, and Mathew tells him, “You’re a terrible liar, do you know that?” He is told to leave Cai alone, as the children will suffer without their school books. “I saw what you did – you took a photo of the questions!” says Mathew.
Cai resorts to bribery . . . |
“Haven’t you got anything better to do? Go and drink your pint!” snaps Cai, “It’s only a silly little quiz,” and Mathew can see that he is scared of losing. Cai takes out a £10 note which he hands to Mathew;
. . . in the hope that Mathew will keep quiet |
“Have a pint on me, and keep quiet, all right?”
He thinks he has sorted out that problem |
Mathew takes the note.
"He wants you to see your mother before it's too late" |
“That’s why he keeps phoning you,” Mark goes on, “He just wants you to know – he doesn’t want to punish you – he wants you to see your mother before it’s too late.”
"It was too late the second I walked out of that house" |
She maintains that it was too late the second she walked out of that house, and he asks, “Do you really believe that –
"Or are you too much of a coward?" |
“or are you too much of a coward to go back and face her?” She argues that she is not a coward,
Andrea is lost for words |
and then lapses into silence, so Mark thinks that perhaps she should leave.
At last the quiz can resume |
Cai comes back into the Deri, and Hywel launches into the final round, which is on the buzzer; he asks which female player has won the most caps for Wales.
"Louise Rickard!" |
Mathew answers without hesitation, “Louise Rickard!” and there is a cheer from the team, as Mathew explains that Tegwen goes on and on about her.
“When did the Wales women’s team start playing as a national team?” is the next question,
"1988" |
and Cai thinks that he has nailed it with the year 1988, but this is incorrect, and Mathew maintains that it is the previous year, and is right,
The women's team cheers |
much to the chagrin of Cai.
“Who won the first women’s rugby cup in 1991?” says Hywel, but Mathew’s stab at New Zealand is wrong. The whole quiz hinges on the answer given by Cai,
"This is your last chance" |
and he is taunted, “What’s wrong, Cai – this is your last chance.”
Cai is put on the spot |
He guesses at England, but the right answer is the United States; Hywel proclaims that is the end of the Cwmderi rugby quiz,
"The winner is – Mathew!" |
and the winner is Mathew. This causes great jubulation from the women’s team, and Cai is forced to admit defeat.
"Tegwen has obviously taught me something about rugby" |
“Tegwen has obviously taught me something about rugby,” says Mathew, “And thanks for the pint! It’s lucky that Hywel had some spare questions, in case the scores were even.”
"Cheating and using bribery" |
“I’m very disappointed in you – a schoolteacher cheating and using bribery!” Hywel berates Cai,
"My hangover is coming back" |
who maintains that his hangover is coming back.
"It's only a silly little quiz" |
“You’re such a bad loser,” jeers Mathew, “What did you say outside? It’s only a silly little quiz.” Then his phone rings, to advise that Tegwen is back in the shop flat, so he will meet her there;
"You're not going to believe this!" |
“You’re not going to believe this!” he informs her.
"We won!" |
When Mathew gets back to the flat he tells Tegwen that they won.
Tegwen is ecstatic |
As they embrace he insists, “If you’d been there, you would have hammered him!”
"Thanks for stepping in, Math" |
She thanks him for stepping in and reports that Ken is much better and sleeping at her sister’s.
"Fancy gloating in front of Cai?" |
“Do you fancy coming over to the Deri for a pint,” Mathew asks, “And gloating in front of Cai?”
"I'd rather have a night in with you" |
She would prefer to have a night in with him and they hug once more.
Dylan furiously bangs on the door |
Dylan bangs violently on the door of number 9, shouting, “We have things to discuss, don’t we, Tes?” Along the street, Llinos wonders what is going on, and finally the door opens, with Gwyneth demanding what all the noise is about.
"I want to talk to Tesni!" |
He wants to talk to Tesni, but Gwyneth snarls, “She’s not in – even if she was, she doesn’t want to talk to you!
"Listen, this isn't the way . . ." |
“Listen, this isn’t the way to try and persuade Tesni to let you be part of the funeral – right?”
Then he bangs on the window instead |
Dani is approaching, as he insists that they have things to discuss, and he starts banging on the window instead, shouting for Tesni to come home.
As Gwyneth closes the door, he furiously hammers on it,
Dylan, what's wrong with you?" |
and Dani screams at him, “What’s wrong with you?”
"My sister's gone –and it's my fault!" |
“My sister’s gone!” he wails, “She’s gone – and it’s my fault! She was my sister, Dan – why can’t anyone understand that?”
Dani has good cause to worry |
He walks back towards the Deri and Dani looks very worried.
