"Oh, that's my phone"

Jaclyn hears her phone sounding and picks it up;  

An optimistic message from Garry

the message from Garry reads, ‘Our new life starts today xx.’   

She ponders on the enormity of what she is doing

She sits on the sofa and looks at it, but when Gerwyn comes downstairs, she quickly hides the phone.

"Where do socks go?"

“Where do socks go?” he angrily demands, and she replies that it is one of life’s big questions.   

"Ger, let's have a chat"

She is obviously very preoccupied and calls him to come and sit down, so they can have a chat, but he is eager to get his breakfast before going to work.   Irritably, he asks her what is wrong.

“I’m . . .” she begins, 

"Get on with it – I have to go to work!"

and he urges her to get on with it, as he does not have the patience.   She returns to what seems like a trance state.

"That went well, didn't it, Garry?"

In the Deri flat, Garry is shouting to Gwern, and Dani comments, “That went well.”   Garry is under the impression that the boy will come round, 

"Do you expect him to be happy you're leaving?"

but she wonders, “Do you expect him to be happy that you’re leaving – and then that he’ll be living with you and another woman?   Well done, Garry, top dad!”

He argues that he did not want to leave without saying goodbye, which comes as rather a shock to Dani;  

"You should have put it in the calendar"

“You’re leaving us today?   Well, thanks for telling me – you should have put it in the calender.”   

For once, Garry says nothing

He cannot think of anything to say and simply stands there, looking uncomfortable.

"Sorry I snapped – I was hungry"

Back at number 10, Gerwyn asks what Jaclyn wanted to talk to him about earlier, giving the excuse that he snapped because he was hungry.   

"I'm just sorry for blaming you"

She answers, “I’m just sorry for the rows and blaming you for everything – we’re both at fault.”   He does not want her getting upset, or he will be reluctant to go to work;  

"We always manage to sort things out"

he assures her that they will sort things out, as they always manage to do that.

"I'm starving!"

Tesni comes downstairs, complaining that she is starving, and notices the frosty atmosphere between her parents.   

"You haven't argued again, have you?"

“You haven’t argued again, have you?” she demands, and her father replies that they have not.   

"I love you, you know"


He is about to leave for work when Jaclyn pleads with him to stop;  “I love you, you know,” she says;  he confirms that he loves her, too, and will see her tonight.

This does not seem right to Tesni 

Tesni’s puzzlement continues 

Jaclyn follows her husband out of the door . . .

when her mother rushes out of the door after him 

. . . and watches him go to the garage

and watches him walking towards the garage.

"You're starting early"

Eifion is sitting on the bench by the alley, drinking from another can;  Siôn approaches and remarks, “You’re starting early – I haven’t had lunch yet.”   Eifion groans that he has nothing better to do, but Siôn is aware there is always something to do on a farm.

"Eileen's thrown me out"

“Yeah, well, not for me – Eileen’s thrown me out,” Eifion moans, and Siôn hopes that he has not been sleeping on the bench.   “What do you think I am?   I’m staying with Ffion!” is the abrupt reply, “She’s a good friend – salt of the earth.”

"You can't drink while living with an alcoholic"

Siôn warns him that he cannot drink like that while he is living with an alcoholic, 

"I'm as sober as St Eifion!"

and at that moment Ffion passes;  Siôn reports that Eifion is drunk, but he denies this, maintaining, “I’m as sober as a saint – St Eifion!”

"I told him not to being alcohol to the flat"

“Siôn, I told him not to bring alcohol to the flat,” protests Ffion, 

"That's why I'm drinking out here!"

and he moans that is the reason he is drinking out there.   

"Arwen is your priority at the moment"

Siôn reminds her that Arwen is her priority at the moment, 

"Pack your things – if you can stand up!"

and she informs Eifion, in no uncertain terms, “Pack your things – if you can stand up!”


He cannot change Ffion's mind

He slurringly promises not to touch another drop, but her mind is made up, and Eifion staggers off along the street, blaming Siôn for his homeless state.

Tesni knows that something is wrong . . .

Jaclyn and Tesni look at each other, and Tesni asks if her mother would like to go to town today, receiving the reply that she cannot.   This is a very unfamiliar response, so Tesni suspects that her mother is ill, 

. . . her mother is in a world of her own

but by now Jaclyn’s mind is elsewhere once more.

"I'm leaving – with Garry"

Finally she says, “There’s no easy way to say this . . . I’m leaving.   Garry and I want to be together.”   

"Garry Monk?"

Tesni cannot believe what she is hearing, as her mother continues, “And we’re leaving this afternoon.”

"I know it's a shock, Tes"

She prefers to call their affair a ‘relationship’, and knows that it is a shock to her daughter;  “You and Guto are adults now – you don’t need me any more.”   

"Dad will be lost without you!"

Tesni reminds her about their father, who will be lost without her;  “I can’t believe we’re discussing this.   How long have you been seeing him?”   Jaclyn explains that it is not long;  

"You're leaving Dad for a fling?"

“You’re leaving Dad for a fling?” Tesni demands, but is told that it is not a fling.   “You and Dad have been together for ever!”

Jaclyn answers that is exactly the thing;  and she has never been with anyone else.   

"Garry and I want to be together"

“Garry and I want to be together!”   It is pointed out that she barely knows him.   

"It just feels right"

“I don’t know how to describe it – it just feels right,” she concludes.


"I'm the one who's supposed to do stupid things"
  
“I’m the one who is supposed to do stupid things – I’m the teenager!” Tesni shrieks, “You’re supposed to know better.”   

Her mother stresses that she is not doing this lightly, but does love Garry, who makes her feel alive;  

"All we do is fall asleep in front of the box"

“All your father and I do is fall asleep in front of the box,” but Tesni argues that is what they are supposed to do at their age.   “But there must be more to life, Tes!”  

 

"So we're not enough for you"

Tesni comes to the realisation that the family are not enough for her mother, but she protests that is not what she said;  “Well, that’s what it feels like!” shouts Tesni.

“You and Guto are everything to me – but I have a right to a life of my own!” Jaclyn declares, and Tesni informs her she has a life with Dad.   “You have to be strong – someone has to look after your father,” she is told, but predicts that he will never get over this.   

"He'll get used to it, Tes"

“He’ll be upset to begin with, but he’ll get used to it – it will be a new start for him, too,” Jaclyn insists, then, in a cowardly twist, adds, “I want you to tell him.”   This predictably does not go down well with Tesni.

Garry confesses that he did not want to leave like this;  

"Did you want me to organise a party?

“I’m sorry – did you want me to organise a party?” Dani snarls, and he suggests that they could at least be civil.   “Why should I?” she squeals, 

"Snapping at each other is not helping anyone"

and he maintains that snapping at each other is not helping anyone.

“OK, fine – good luck – I’m sure you’ll be very happy – until you want your next kick,” is her reply, 

True love, is it?"

“True love, is it?”   

Again Garry remains silent

He does not seem to be able to bring himself to answer that, and she continues, “What did we have?”

"I did love you, Dan . . ."

Garry admits that he did love Dani;   she points out, “But you can still walk away.”   He argues that things change.   “So what’s the attraction – sex?   Jaclyn must be amazing in bed – once the cardigan comes off!”

"Ooh, the cardigan stays on, does it?"

He reprimands her, so she assumes, “Ooh, it stays on, does it?”   

"It's more than that, Dan"

He growls that it is not about sex – it is more than that;  he has never felt like this before.  Dani mutters, “Go – go now,” 

"I don't want you here – go!"

then her voice rises to a scream, “I don’t want you here – go!”   

Garry takes one final look back

He turns and walks out of the room, with one final look back.

Jac's remarkably small case is packed

A case is on the floor at number 10 as Dylan walks into the house;  Jaclyn, who is upstairs, assumes that it is Gerwyn, then sees her brother. 

He asks if she is going, and she resolutely replies, “Yes, and there’s no point trying to change my mind.”

"With Garry Monk?"

He distastefully spits out the words, “With Garry Monk?” and her phone rings.   

She makes a point of showing it is Garry

She proudly shows him that it is Garry who is calling, then speaks to him.

"I'll meet you there"

“Now?   I’m not ready – no, don’t come here – I’ll meet you there.   

"Love you, too!"

“Love you, too!” – this last comment for Dylan’s benefit, who is looking far from pleased about it.

Garry's car arrives at the meeting place . . .

In the woods, Garry’s car arrives;  he stops, 

. . . and he looks not entirely untroubled

gets out of the car and looks around, a worried frown on his face.

Mathew comes round the corner . . .

Mathew walks round the corner by Bethania 

. . . and meets tearful Tesni 

and comes face to face with Tesni, who is in tears.   “Tes, please don’t cry – I hate seeing you like this,” he says, 

"You're bound to get over it"

“I know it doesn’t feel like it now, but you’re bound to get over it.”

"Mam's running away with Garry Monk"


“I'm not crying over you,” she tells him, “Mam’s having an affair with Garry Monk, and she’s running away with him.”   Mathew cannot believe this about her mother and Garry, 

"When I thought things couldn't get any worse"

and she sobs, “I’ve tried to stop her – just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse!”

He says that he is sorry, and she goes on, “At least you were brave enough to tell me straight – I have to tell Dad!   I have to find him.”   Mathew advises her not to tell her father while she is in this state;  she should wipe her tears at least.   

"Can I come up to the flat for a while?"

She asks asks if she can come up to the flat for a while, and he agrees that of course she can.   

Mathew receives a troubling phone call

His phone rings, and he receives some news which seems to confuse him.

Someone has dumped an old excavator . . .

Back in the woods, Dylan is creeping around by a piece of discarded earthmoving machinery, 

. . . which provides cover for Dylan . . .

keeping an eye on Garry, who is standing by his car.   

. . . who is equipped with a firearm

He ensures that his gun is tucked into the back of his trousers.   

"Jac, where are you?"

Garry’s phone rings;  “Jac, where are you?” he says, “Yes, where we agreed – hurry, then.”

He sees Dylan approaching

Hearing someone approaching, he turns to see Dylan, 

"You're not going anywhere!"

who informs him, “You’re not going anywhere – I know what your plans are!”   

"What are you going to do about it?"

Garry makes it abundantly clear that he is leaving with Dylan’s sister, and wonders what he is going to do about it.

Then Dylan draws his weapon

When Dylan produces the gun, 

"Oh, Dylan, go home, there's a good boy"

Garry sneers at him, “Oh, Dylan, go home, there’s a good boy,” but is told that he cannot take Dylan’s sister.   

“Watch me!” Garry shouts, 

"Jaclyn doesn't really want you"

but is informed that Jaclyn does not really want him;  “Doesn’t she?   

"Why does she sound so genuine when we're in bed?"

“Why does she sound so genuine when we’re in bed, then?” Garry demands, walking towards him, “Come on, Dyl – Jaclyn has never loved anyone the way she loves me – and you’re going to take that from her?   Break her heart?   No!”

Garry deals him a mighty blow with the car door . . .

Garry walks back to his car, and when Dylan falls to his knees and begs, slams the car door into him, 

. . . and Dylan reaches for the gun . . .

knocking him over and sending the gun flying.   

. . . which Garry treads upon

Dylan reaches for it, but Garry puts his foot on the gun.

As we are treated to a view of the treetops, a loud gunshot rings out, which disturbs the local bird population.

"Hey, Iolo, I know you're in there!"

Eifion bangs on the door of number 7;  when Iolo comes out, 

"How are the springs on your spare bed?"

he is asked, “How are the springs on your spare bed?   I’ve got nowhere else to go.”   

   "I'm not surprised, looking at the state of you"

Iolo is not surprised, looking at the state of him, and Eifion’s offer that they could have a session on the sofa does nothing to change his mind.

“I’ve got Greta to look after – you’ll have to find somewhere else,” he says 

Iolo goes back inside the house

and closes the door.   Eifion grumbles about him being a good friend, and staggers off along the street.

Garry's car is on the move . . .

We see Garry’s car, a silver SAAB, CN03KPV, driving to another part of the wood;  the driver gets out, opens the boot, in which is something wrapped in a tarpaulin and secured with ropes.   

. . . with an ominous bundle in the boot

He manhandles the tarpaulin out of the car.

Eifion engages in some 'breaking and entering'

Eifion’s next port of call is Hywel’s house, next door to the Deri;  he smashes a pane of glass in the back door and lets himself in, 

No-one is about . . .

carefully looking around to make sure no-one is there.   

. . . so he enjoys the sanctuary

He breathes a sigh of relief and sinks down on the sofa.

"That call upset you, didn't it?"

Up in the shop flat, Mathew is still looking very anxiously at his phone;  “That call upset you, didn’t it?” says Tesni, “Who was it?”   

"The important thing is – are you OK?"

He explains that it was an old friend, and wants to know if she is OK.

"I'm better after talking to you"

“I’m better after talking to you.” she answers, and he assures her that he is here for her if she needs anything.   “This is nice, talking, just you me, perhaps we could go for a drink this week – or go out for a walk?   If you regret finishing with me, Math, that’s OK.   We can start over – we’re good together.”

"I'm just here for you as a friend"

He tries as diplomatically as possible to explain that today does not change anything.   He is here for her as a friend, but nothing more;     “We’re over, and that’s not going to change.”

"What have I done wrong, Math?"

She wants to know what she has done wrong, and why finish with her, 

"Look, Tes, I'm sorry"

but he simply says that he is sorry.   

"Thanks for listening"

She turns and sadly leaves the flat, thanking him for listening to her, but now she has to go and find her father.   

That phone call has definitely unsettled him

Once again he glances at his phone and looks worried.

"That was a close shave"

As he sits down at the table, Izzy comes in, having just managed to avoid Tesni;  “What did she want, then?   Don’t say she wanted you back.”   

"Jaclyn's running away with Garry Monk"

He tells her what Tesni told him – that Jaclyn is leaving, and running away with Garry Monk.   

"Is it April 1st?"

“Is it April 1st?” Izzy demands, and he points out that he is serious;  that is why Tesni was so upset.   “And so she turned to her ex,” Izzy deduces, “Just don’t let her become too dependent on you.   

Izzy is becoming rather possessive

“From my experience, it's best to keep a distance from an ex.”

Mathew is not taking much notice and explains to her that the solicitor phoned earlier;  

"They've found a more recent will"

“They’ve found Auntie Nel’s will,” and she hopes there were no more pictures.   “No, it’s a different will, a more recent one – and I might get the money after all.”

Her interest is roused by the mention of money

Of course Izzy is interested in the amount of money involved, 

"£250,000!"

and learning that it is £250,000 comes as rather a shock.

Jaclyn arrives, on foot

Back in the wood, Jaclyn is walking, with her case in her hand.   

The bundle is being dragged through the undergrowth

Elsewhere, the tarpaulin with its contents, is being dragged along the ground.   

Garry is nowhere to be seen

She cannot see any sign of Garry, so gets out her phone.

The evidence is disposed of into the lake

In the distance, across the lake, we see that the tarpaulin has been dragged to the water’s edge, and with a splash, is thrown in.

"I'm here – where are you?"

Meanwhile, Jaclyn says, “Hiya, I’m here  – where are you?”

Dylan is exhausted by his exertions

With his trousers in a muddy state, Dylan is exhausted by his exertions as he stands by the lakeside.
