The homeless arrive for a free meal

Notices about the free food at MFC have been posted around the place and various people are heading towards the shop;  they are welcomed by Colin and Britt and invited to have anything they want.

"Are you sure they want chicken burgers and milkshakes?"

Then Colin wonders, “Are you sure they want chicken burgers and milkshakes for breakfast?”   Britt believes that they will be grateful for whatever they are given,

"It's somewhere warm for them" – how about closing the door, then?

adding that they are not just there for the food, but it is somewhere warm for them.

"Spread the word, Brynmor"

Brynmor happens to be passing, so she tells him to spread the word;  “MFC is offering free food to homeless people today,”

"Fair play to you"

which he regards as a worthy cause.   Colin is still dubious about whether they can afford this, but she confidently asserts,

"If it means we have to live on beans on toast . . ."

“If it means that we have to live on beans on toast every night in January, then that’s what we’ll have to do.

Dani has finished cleaning

Dani is just coming out of the Deri, after cleaning there.

Siwsi stands opposite MFC

Siwsi appears opposite MFC, having hoped to take advantage of the offer,

"Oh, you've come here to help"

but Britt assumes, “Oh, you’ve come here to help – you can make the teas.”

"Sorry, I can't"

Siwsi, rather apologetically, replies, “Sorry, I can’t,” and hurries away.

"I don't think she was here to help"

Dani points out, “I don’t think she was here to help,”

They look stunned

then continues on her way to her next job.

Garry leaves Cysgod y Glyn

Garry has just come out of Cysgod y Glyn when he sees Brynmor approaching

and greets him, “Berwyn.”

"I've got an offer for you"

“I’ve got an offer for you,” he is told.

"It just proves you never know"

Now Britt is feeling terrible and Colin comments, “Yeah, well, it just proves you never know anyone’s situation,” as a couple of their clients come out of MFC, gratefully carrying their breakfast.
Britt wonders if Colin has Siwsi’s phone number, so she will phone Dani to ask what it is.

"Whoa now, Britt"

“Whoa, now, Britt,” warns Colin, but she is adamant that she wants Siwsi to come back.   “I know you want to help her, but you can’t force that help on her,” he argues, “You heard what Dani said – Siwsi’s a private person – just offer her a cup of tea on the house when you see her next, all right?”

Britt ignores Colin as usual

But of course, Britt being Britt, she totally ignores what he says and takes out her phone.

"They've agreed to reduce the size of the dam"

At Cysgod y Glyn, Brynmor informs Garry that he has talked to the Quantum Hydro Works board;  “They’ve agreed to reduce the size of the dam to spare Maes-y-Deri.”

'Well, that's good news"

Garry is pleased to hear that good news, while Brynmor continues that it also means that the cost for the company will be lower.

"It's a win-win situation"

“Well, I’m very glad to hear that,” remarks Garry;  Brynmor regards it as a win-win situation.

". . . so do we have an understanding?"

He asks if they have an understanding.

“About what?” enquires Garry,

"Oh, yes – your secret!"

“Oh, yes – your secret!”

"What's the answer"

Brynmor is anxious to hear the answer to whether they understand each other.

"I'm not promising anything until . . ."

Garry folds his arms in a magisterial fashion and states, “I’m not promising anything until I see in black and white that Maes-y-Deri is safe.”

"Dad – what's going on?"

At that moment, Eleri walks in, surprised to see her father there;  “What’s going on?”

"I was just leaving"

Garry picks up his coat and tells her to ask her father, adding that he was just leaving.

"Well?"

“Well?” she demands,

Brynmor says nothing

but Brynmor does not reply.

"I don't know how to help Mathew"

In the deli, Siôn tells Eileen that he wants to try and help Mathew, but does not know how;  “Do you think he’d like to go for a walk with me once a week?

"I could look for some suitable books"

“Or perhaps I could look for some suitable books for him.”

"We just need to be patient with him"

She does not consider that either of those is a good idea, rather recommending that they just need to be patient with him.   Now she has to go and take some cakes from the oven.

"Flat white to go, please"

As she does that, the door opens and Garry walks in to order a flat white to go;  he notices Siôn and asks how he is.

"I heard you were back"

“I heard you were back in the valley – it must be difficult,” he says and Garry agrees that it is.

"I want to apologise to you"

“Listen, I want to apologise to you – I never should have frightened you and Lleucu the way I did the last time I saw you.”   Siôn thanks him for that, but considering what else happened that day,

"I feel sorry as well"

he feels sorry as well.   He cannot imagine how difficult this last year has been for Garry.

"You wanted to see me?"

Mark comes in, having apparently been summoned by Garry;  “You wanted to see me?”

Garry informs him, “I have some good news about the dam,” so Siôn invites the two of them to take a seat.

"Not a single family will lose their home"

Garry continues, “Not a single family will lose their home now because of the dam.”

Mark cannot believe that he is serious, but he confirms that he is.   Siôn points out that the appeal has not taken place yet..   “There won’t be any need for one now,” Garry replies.

"Do I really want to know?"

Siôn asks how he managed that, then adds, “But do I really want to know?”

"Everything is above board, Siôn"

He is assured that everything is above board.

"I needed news like that!"

“Well, after the last few weeks, I needed news like that!” exclaims Mark,

Hywel comes in

just as Hywel comes in.

"But mind you keep it quiet"

Garry cautions, “But nothing’s been confirmed yet, so keep this quiet.”   they agree to do so, but Hywel is doing his best to hear what they are saying.

Hywel can see that something is going on

Garry gets up, acknowledges Hywel, collects his coffee and leaves the deli.   Hywel cannot miss the broad smile on Mark’s face.

"Come on – not much affects you"

At Cysgod y Glyn, Eleri demands, “Come on – not much affects you –

"It's what Garry said"

“and it’s obvious that whatever Garry said is a problem.”

Brynmor is reluctant to say anything

Brynmor does not seem willing to divulge anything, so she continues, “I know we haven’t seen eye to eye lately, but if it’s anything to do with Quantum Hydro Works, perhaps I can help.”

"That's the last thing I want!"

Her father laughs, “You being part of the company again is the last thing I want – you’ve been in Garry Monk’s ear, talking about me.

"You let him go through my stuff yesterday . . ."

“You let him go through my stuff here yesterday –

". . . how could you be so stupid?"

“how could you be stupid enough to think he wouldn’t use you?”

"What has happened?"

She again demands what has happened and offers to help him;

"No – you've done enough!"

“No – you’ve done enough by bringing him into our lives!” he snarls.

When she once more demands, what is going on, he answers, “It’s just confidential, OK?”

"Hywel, what's wrong?"

His phone rings and he answers, “Hywel, what’s wrong?   What?   When?”

Brynmor rushes away

and quickly walks out of the flat.

"Can you help me clean the dog kennels?"

At Penrhewl, Sioned and Mathew are dealing with a large basketful of washing;  “After we’ve finished here, can you help me clean the dog kennels?” she asks.

"Howard's in Llanarthur"

He wants to know why Howard cannot do it, so is informed, “Howard’s in Llanarthur, fixing some wall for you.”

"You've been on my mind since last week"

There is a knock on the door and Siôn appears;  “You’ve been on my mind since last week,” he says.   Sioned confirms that they are all right.

"I just wanted to give you this"

“I won’t keep you, because I know you need some space at the moment, but I just wanted to give you this,” he continues, handing over the phone number of a therapist who specialises in child trauma.

"I'm all right"

Mathew assures Siôn that he is all right,

"He's very well respected"

but he goes on, “He’s very well respected,”

Mathew already has a counsellor"

so Sioned has to intervene to point out that what Mathew is really trying to say is that he already has a counsellor.

"I've got work to do at APD"

Mathew tells him he can keep his phone number and he has work to do at APD, then walks out of the house.

"I didn't want to interfere"

Siôn maintains that he did not want to interfere, but Sioned points out that Mathew had had a shock because Siôn turned up without any warning.   He imagines that he should have texted first.

"I know this isn't easy for you"

“You don’t need to apologise, Siôn – I hope you’re OK as well – I know this isn’t easy for you.”

"We have to focus on Mathew now"

Siôn insists that they have to focus on Mathew now.

Britt serves another mug of tea

At MFC, Britt is manning the tea urn and serves another customer, then she is pleased to see Siwsi arriving.

"Sorry for running off"

“Thanks for the text – I’m sorry for running off earlier, I’m just a bit embarrassed,”

"There's no need to be embarrassed"

but she is told there is no need to be.

"I wanted to come in and warm up"

She wanted to come in and warm up;  “It’s lovely to have somewhere to go without having to spend money.”

"Are you struggling?"

Britt does not want to appear to be nosy, but realises that Siwsi is struggling and adds, “If you want to say anything, it won’t go any further.”  (Difficult to believe – this is Cwmderi!)

"Things has been a bit difficult since Christmas"

“Things have been a bit difficult since Christmas,” Siwsi explains, “But Mark and Dani have been brilliant letting me stay a few nights here and there.”   Britt asks where she has been living;  “In my car.”

"Isn't there anyone who can help you?"

“Isn’t there anyone who can help you?” Britt enquires and is told that Siwsi and her mother have not got the best relationship,

"Sometimes it's easier to stay in the car"

so sometimes it is easier to stay in the car.   She is not sure where she will be staying tonight,

"You can stay with us"

so Britt insists that she should come and stay with them

"Don't argue – you're staying with us?"

“Don’t argue – you’re coming to stay with us and that’s the end of it,” Britt instructs

Britt hugs Siwsi . . .

and gives her a big hug.

. . . while Colin show his disapproval

Colin has overheard this, and looks very disapproving.

"Sorry for the phone call . . ."

Brynmor has gone straight to number 21, where Hywel apologises for the phone call, “But when I saw what I saw in Tamed earlier, I thought you should know.

". . . but they were very happy about what Garry told them"

Not anything specific, but it was obvious that Siôn and were very happy about what Garry told them – do you know what’s going on?”

"Plans for the dam are going to have to change . . ."

Brynmor answers, “Plans for the dam are going to have to change –

". . . because of Garry Monk!"

“because of Garry Monk, that’s why – he’s the one funding the appeal against the CPOs at Maes-y-Deri.

"He didn't say it in as many words, but . . ."

“He didn’t say that in so many words, but . . .”

Hywel has a bad attack of nerves

Hywel is now getting very nervous and demands how this is going to impact on how profitable the enterprise will be for the shareholders.   Brynmor suspects that it will indeed have an effect, “But it would have been a bigger financial hit for us as a company if we hadn’t given into Garry Monk.”

"There must be a way to stop him"

Hywel is sure there must be a way to stop him funding it, but Brynmor replies that there is not,

"Don't say a word!"

“And by the way, this information hasn’t been confirmed or made public yet, so don’t say a word.

"I'll be in touch"

“Right, I have to go – I’ll be in touch soon.”

Hywel has some serious thinking to do

Hywel thanks him for the information.

"Are you sure you don't want to join us?"

Mark arrives at Maes-y-Deri, where Dani is doing the ironing;  “Are you sure you don’t want to join us?” he asks her, “It’s just small celebration in the Deri.”

"I don't want to celebrate Garry"

She makes it quite clear that she does not want to celebrate Garry, so he suggests, “What about celebrating that our home has been saved instead?”

"I'm not ready to drink with him yet"

Dani declares that she is not ready to drink with him yet,

"Couldn't you see your friend later?"

but Mark points out that he will also be there, wondering if she could not go and see her friend later – he wonders who is this friend anyway.

"Just an old friend from school"

“Just an old friend from school – if that’s all right with you,” she replies.   A message arrives on Dani’s phone;

"He really has saved Maes-y-Deri"

Mark continues, “I know Garry has his weaknesses, all right?   But this time I think it’s you who’s wrong.   He really has saved the Maes-y-Deri estate for the community.”

Dani looks at her phone message . . .

After saying this, he leaves the house while Dani looks at the message from Cai on her phone,

. . . Cai, enquiring about their date

which reads, ‘Dinner at six isn’t too early, is it?’

Eleri is heading homewards . . .

Eleri is walking along the back street

. . . when sees Garry . . .

when she sees Garry emerging from Cysgod y Glyn, which has acquired a number 2 on the door.

. . . who walks away

As he is walking away, she crosses the road towards him.

"Have you been using me?"

“Have you been using me?” she angrily demands, “You’ve got closer to me to get information about Dad.”

"That's not true"

He insists that is not true, but she continues, “I’m not stupid – I know what you’ve been doing!”

Garry insists that he has enjoyed her company, but she issues him an ultimatum;

"I want you to move out – today!"

“I want you to move out – today!   I mean it

"It's not as simple as that . . ."

He protests that it is not as simple as that;

". . . this is the address for my licence"

“Cysgod y Glyn is the address for my licence.”   She suggests that he had better contact them,

"You're not setting foot in my flat ever again!"

because he is not setting foot in her flat ever again.

Sioned is washing up

Sioned is doing some washing up when Matthew returns to the house;

"Did you do it all on your own?"

“Did you clean the kennels all on your own?” he asks and she replies that it was not too much work.

"I should have stayed and helped"

“I should have stayed and helped,” he acknowledges, but she can appreciate that he needed some time on his own.   She wonders how he feels now.

"I overreacted, didn't`I?"

“I overreacted, didn’t I?” he groans, but is reassured that Siôn understands.   “I’m so fed up with this!” he growls, “Blowing a fuse every time someone says or does something unexpected – and then you say, ‘No, Mathew, it’s fine’.”

"It is fine, Math"

She stresses that it is fine;  there is no right way or wrong way to deal with what he has been through.

"I just want things to go back to how they were"

“I just want things to go back to how they were before I remembered what happened – and I know that’s not going to happen,” he sighs.

"Try not to be so hard on yourself"

Sioned begs him, “Please try not to be so hard on yourself while we work through this.”   He decides that he will go and text Siôn,

"I have a better idea"

but she has a better idea.

"A pint to celebrate?"

Garry comes into the Deri and joins Mark by the bar, who offers, “Let me get you something – what do you want?   A pint to celebrate?”

"What happened to keeping this between us?"

Garry enquires, “What happened to keeping this between us?” but Mark is confident that they can trust everyone there,

"A pint on the house"

while Cassie offers Garry a pint on the house.

"Dani's busy this afternoon"

Mark says that Dani was busy this afternoon, so could not be there.

Hywel is concerned

Hywel comes in, looking very flustered and would also like a pint;

"You look as if you're carrying the weight of the world"

Cassie comments that he looks as if he is carrying the weight of the world.

"I've got a lot on my mind"

He concedes that he has a lot on his mind.

"Can I give you a word of advice?"

Garry takes great delight in sidling up to him and says, “Listen, I’m sorry if I led you to think I wanted to buy shares in the company, but can I give you a word of advice?”

"Do I have a choice?"

Hywel imagines that he has little choice;

"Cut your ties with  Quantum Hydro Works"

“Cut your ties with Quantum Hydro Works and do it quickly – I’m not sure how much of a future that company has in this village.   I’m serious –

"I don't want to see you make a fool of yourself"

“I’m telling you this as a friend.   I don’t want to see you making a fool of yourself by choosing the wrong side.”

This confirms what Hywel was thinking

This makes Hywel think seriously about things.

"Sioned and Mathew are here"

Siôn is reading when Eileen returns to the flat, announcing that Sioned  and Mathew are there.

"I'm glad Siôn is here"

As they come in, Sioned is glad that Siôn is there, and he wonders if everything is all right.

"I need to apologise to you, Siôn"

“I need to apologise to you, Siôn,” Mathew begins, “I need to remember that this trauma doesn’t just affect me;  you’ve been through a lot as well.”

"I just want to support you"

Siôn repeats that he just wants to support Mathew.

"I'd like the four of us to have a takeaway"

“Yes, I know, so that’s why, if it’s all right with you, I’d like the four of us to have a takeaway tonight – my treat.”

"I want to sell all my shoes in Quantum Hydro Works . . ."

In the Deri, Hywel is speaking on the phone, “Yes, I’m fine, thanks – I’ve been thinking and I want to sell my shares in Quantum Hydro Works –

". . . yes, all of them!"

“yes, I’'m serious – I want to sell all of them.”

"These are going straight to my head"

Meanwhile, over at the bar, Mark is not sure if he should have another one as they are going straight to his head.   Garry reminds him that he has only had two pints.

"Still celebrating, then?"

Dani comes in;  “You’re still celebrating, then?”   She says that she is not staying,

"I just wanted to say thank you"

“But I just wanted to say thank you.”

"Dani, wait"

She is about to leave again when Garry calls her back;

"I did this for Seren"

“Dani, I did this for Seren – you do know that, don’t you?   Cwmderi was her home – I didn’t want us to lose that.”

"Why are you telling me this?"

She wonders why he is telling her this;

"I wan you to know the truth"

“Because I want you to know the truth – stay and have a drink with us.”

"You can't use this to . . ."

Dani protests that he cannot use this in order to . . . but he insists that is not what he is doing and begs her to stay, as he has missed her.

"I'm late for a date"

“I’ve moved on anyway and I’m late for a date, so . . .”

"With Cai"

“With Cai,” he says and she agrees that it is, pleading with him not to make things difficult for them, then walks out of the Deri,

Dani walks out

leaving Garry sadly considering his situation.
