Jinx is at the deli

Jinx is in the deli, paying for his purchase, when Dani comes in;  he welcomes her back, 

"I take it you've heard Garry's back"

adding, “I take it you’ve heard that Garry is back?”

"I didn't know he and Eleri were friends"

She answers that she has seen him;  “I hear that he’s staying with Eleri – I didn’t know they were friends.”   

"Neither did I "

Jinx admits that neither did he.   

"If I'd known the deep clean was for Garry . . ."

“If I had known the deep clean was for Garry, I wouldn’t have done such a good job.”   Jinx apologises that Eleri asked her to clean the flat.

Then Cai comes in

As he is leaving, he meets Cai in the doorway, 

"How are you, Dani?"

who asks how Dani is 

"I'm fed up with everyone asking"

and she says, “I’m just fed up with everyone asking me if I know Garry’s back!”   Cai is very aware that people around there are nosy and assumes that now Garry is back, 

"That will affect my chances"

it is bound to affect his chances with Dani.

"I want to take things slowly"

She replies that he does not have to, but she wants to take things slowly, so he wonders if he can offer her a cup of tea, being rather disappointed when she refuses.   

"I wouldn't say no to a cappuccino"

However, she does add, “But I wouldn’t say no to a cappuccino.”

"I was on my way over"

Jinx is on his way over to Cysgod y Glyn to make breakfast for Eleri, when he meets her in the street.   She informs him that there is no need as Garry made them some toast.

"Ho are the lovebirds this morning?"

At that moment he joins them, enquiring, “How are the lovebirds this morning?”   Eleri does not like him calling them that, maintaining that it makes her feel sick.   

"Can I get you a coffee?"

When Garry offers to get them a coffee, Jinx declines, 

"Jealousy isn't a good look"

so Eleri berates him, “Jealousy isn’t a good look for a middle-aged man!” but Jinx does not trust him.   

"You wouldn't trust him either"

He points out that if Eleri had lived there as long as he has, she would not trust him either.   

"He's got more 'oomph' than  most people"

Her response is, “He’s got more ‘oomph’ than most people around here.”

"Why didn't you get someone else to clean?"

“And another thing – why didn’t you get someone else to clean his room?   It was insensitive after everything Dani has been through with Garry.”   Eleri points out that Dani was well paid, but he insists that they need to take care of her, “Especially what we did to her.”

"Huw, you're starting to get on my nerves"

Eleri is quick to remind him, “You were unfaithful, not me!   Huw, you’re starting to get on my nerves.”   He has had nearly enough of this.

There is a banging on the door of Llwyncelyn . . . 

At Llwyncelyn, Gaynor is packing some clothes for Tom when there is a hammering at the front door, together with Colin’s voice calling for her to open the door.   

. . . which Gaynor tried to ignore

She ignores this, but he continues, “I know you’re in there.   I’ve brought you a few things from the shop.”

Now her phone is buzzing too, so she shouts back to him to leave them on the doorstep.  He is adamant that he is not going to do that.   “I’ve got those biscuits you like as well – I’ll make a cup of tea to go with them.”

Gaynor takes a look at her phone 

Gaynor picks up the phone, looks at it then puts it down again.   

She is becoming rather emotional

She continues packing the clothes into a case, obviously rather emotional  about one of the garments.

"I'm worried about Gwern the most"

In the deli, Dani discloses to Cai, “I’m worried about Gwern the most – he’s been doing so well recently and, having Garry back – I’m worried it will trigger some kind of trauma for him.”

"You're incredible with him"

Cai is convinced that Gwern will be all right, as he has Dani.   She says that she is trying her best but feels like a terrible mother half the time.   “You’ve been through hell, Dani, and you’re incredible with him.”

Garry comes in

Just then, Garry comes in 

"Black Americano, double shot, to go"

and orders a black Americano, double shot, to go.   He asks Dani how she is and she replies that she is OK.   

"I heard that Gwern gave you a hard time"

“I heard that Gwern gave you a hard time,” she adds.

"I'm glad he's willing to talk to me . . ."

Garry is just glad that he is willing to talk to his father at all;  

". . . and you"

“And you,” he continues, but she maintains that she does not have much choice as it is a small village.   

He leaves with his coffee

His drink is now ready, so he says that he will see Dani.

"Are you really OK?"

When he has gone, Cai wonders if she is really OK;  “Yeah – Garry’s not important enough to upset me any more,” she answers.   

Cai has gardening to do

Now he has to leave, or he will be late to see Mrs Thomas’ garden;  he wonders if there is any chance of another date.   

"I'd like that"

Dani would like that and will text him later.

Then Jinx turns up

Jinx comes back in, just as Dani is leaving;  

"Are you all right, Dani?"

he wanted to check that she was all right – with this Garry and Eleri business.   

"I've got more important things to worry about"

“I’ve got more important things to worry about,” she tells him.   It is obvious to her that he has something on his mind, so she sits down again and demands what is wrong.

"Do you think I'm a walkover?"

“Do you think I’m a walkover?” he asks, “That I’m too soft?   I’m worried that’s how Eleri sees me.   And you said yourself that I’m needy.”

"You're a nice bloke, Jinx"

After some thought, she replies, “Apart from that blip last year, you’re a nice bloke, Jinx.”   

"Perhaps too nice"

He comes to the conclusion that he is too nice, 

"Is there such a thing as 'too nice'?"

although she wonders, “Is there such a thing as ‘too nice’?”   

Jinx ponders upon this

She gets up to leave while he thinks about what she has said.

The wild swimmers arrive at the riverbank

Down at the river, the two wild swimmers arrive for their adventure;  

"There's nothing like cold water" —in January?

“There’s nothing like cold water to make you feel alive,” says Britt and she wants to be first into the water, 

Britt is keen to get into the water

as she hurries down the bank.

"You really should answer that"

Gaynor’s phone is still buzzing and Colin, who has by this time being let into the house, insists that she should answer it, pointing out that people are worried about her.   

"I don't want to talk to him"

She looks at the phone, groaning, “The coroner – I don’t want to talk to him – I don’t want to know what he has to say.”

Colin points out that she has to speak to him, 

"You can talk to them"

so she reaches a compromise, 

"Speak to my ex-husband"

answers the call and gives permission for Colin Evans, her ex-husband, to speak to the coroner.

"Right . . ."

He takes over the call;  “Right – 

". . . I'll tell her now"

“OK, I’ll tell her now – thank you.”   

"Asphyxiation . . ."

He announces to Gaynor, “The results have come through – asphyxiation – 

". . . he may have suffocated her intentionally"

“you do know what that means, don’t you?   He didn’t kill Cheryl to defend himself – he must have suffocated her intentionally.   

"He isn't the man you think he is"

“You need to start accepting that he isn’t the man you think he is.”

Gaynor remains silent

Gaynor looks horrified, but does not speak.

At Quantum Hydro Works . . .

Garry is outside the Quantum Hydro Works office, 

. . . Garry is looking for a way in

attempting to force his way in when Danny approaches with her cleaning materials;  

"What do you think you're doing?"

“What do you think you’re doing?” she demands.

She has a key

As she uses her key to get into the office, he makes up some story about looking to see whether anyone was working there today and she reminds him that it is pretty obvious the place is closed, once again asking what he is doing there.

"I was looking for my wallet"

Initially he says that he was looking for his wallet, 

"I want to try and save Maes-y-Deri"

but then adds, “OK, keep this quiet, but I want to try and save Maes-y-Deri.   

"Something I can use against Brynmor"

“To do that, I need to find something I can use against Brynmor.”

"I thought you were appealing the CPOs"

“I thought your solicitor was appealing the CPOs,” says Dani, 

"There's no guarantee it will work"

but he points out that there is no guarantee it will work;  the court might reject the appeal.

"You think blackmail will work?"

“So you think blackmail will work?”   Garry maintains that it is worth a try.   

"I'm not going to let those crooks destroy the village"

He is determined not to let those crooks destroy the village.

"And you think you'll be redeemed?"

“And you think if you do that, you’ll be redeemed?” Dani wonders.

"I've caused this village a lot of pain"

“No,” he replies, “I’ve caused the people of this village a lot of pain – and nobody more than you, Dan.”   

"It's not worth the energy"

She says that she has stopped being angry, as it is not worth the energy.

Garry enquires whether that means she has forgiven him for that day.   She replies, “I’ve stopped blaming everyone.”   

"Does that include Cai?"

He asks whether that includes Cai and she stresses, “I said everyone.”

“I don’t blame you for trying to find comfort,” he continues, but she insists that she does not have to explain herself to him.   “I would have come to see you sooner, you know,” 

"Afraid, were you?"

so she assumes that he was afraid and he agreed that he was.

"I wish I was as strong as you, Dan"

He wishes that he was as strong as her, assuring her that not a day goes by when he does not blame himself for what happened.   Dani says that she is not strong;  

"I've just got used to hiding it"

“I’ve just got used to hiding how sad I am – 

"The key is under the desk"

“if you really want to save Maes-y-Deri, he keeps the key to the drawer under the desk.”

Gaynor will not face the truth

As they sit with their cups of tea, Gaynor is adamant, “What the coroner said doesn’t change anything – you know that, don’t you?   I still believe that Tom was defending himself.”

"Just think about it, Gaynor"

Colin urges her to just think about it;  “A man doesn’t defend himself by . . . it doesn’t make sense – 

"That is what the evidence says"

“that is what the evidence says.”

"Why do you always see the worst in Tom?"

She cannot understand why he always sees the worst in Tom;  “Do you have any idea what sort of things Cheryl did to him?   She hit him across the head with a bottle and left him for dead.   

"She drove him to it!"

“She was to blame, Colin – and she drove him to do . . . whatever it was he did to her.”

"Why would she put you down as next of kin?"

He agrees that whatever happened, Gaynor obviously meant something to Cheryl;  “Why else would she put you down as next of kin?”

"A con artist from Wrexham"

According to Gaynor, she was simply, “A con artist from Wrexham – that’s all she was – the DNA test proved that, didn’t it?”

"Did Tom have something to do with that test?"

Colin wonders if there is a chance that the test was wrong;  “Did Tom have something to do with it?”   

Is it dawning on her?

This appears to have made Gaynor  stop and think.

We do not see them frolicking in the icy water

Unfortunately, we do not see Britt or Iolo actually in the water – in January – but after they have emerged and put on their warm clothing, they are sitting on the riverbank, enjoying a hot drink and picnic.   

"That was better than any drugs!"

“That was better than any drugs!” Britt exclaims 

"It wakes up the endorphins"

and he agrees that a bit of cold wakes up the endorphins.

"It's not worth worrying about small things"

“It makes you realise that it’s not worth worrying about the small things – it’s just life feels a bit quiet at the moment, you know?” Britt goes on, “I miss the children – everything’s black-and-white with Colin – so if I say I’m feeling a bit lost, he starts to worry that it’s the illness.

"I went to a Bethania prayer meeting"

“Hey, you’ll never believe it, but I went to a Bethania prayer meeting the other day.   Megan persuaded me after I went to the Christmas service.”  

"Did you have a religious conversion?"

Iolo wonders if she has had a religious conversion;  “Not quite – not yet, anyway, but there was something quite nice about being there at Christmas time, you know?   I felt like I got some comfort, as if someone was looking after me.   I know it sounds stupid.”

"It's not stupid if it works"

Iolo tells her that it is not stupid if it works;  “What?   One of the Monks turning to God?   Have you ever heard of such a thing?”

Garry has not found anything incriminating

Garry is still looking through files in the Quantum Hydro Works office, but has not as yet found anything of interest.   

"What are you doing here?"

Eleri comes in and demands what he is doing there;  he replies that Dani let him in.  

'She must have gone to Timbuktu . . ."

“She’s gone to get more bleach – and must have gone to Timbuktu because she’s still not back.   

". . . I can't wait for her all day"

“Right, I can’t wait for her all day – I’ve got things to do.   Tell Dani I’ll see her soon.”

"Find what suits you"

As they pack things away into the car, Iolo tells Britt, “There are many different ways of being spiritual, you know – find what suits you.”   

"Life's too short"

Britt maintains that life is too short to spend it looking for things, but he counters with, “Some people would say life is too short not to look.”   She comments that he talks a lot of sense.

"I'm not spiritual myself"

They are about to get into the car when he continues, “I might not be the right person to discuss these things with you – because I don’t know much about religion and I’m not spiritual myself.”   

"But you're a good listener"

She appreciates that, but does point out that he is a good listener.

"Someone from the chapel would be willing to help"

“Why don’t you just talk to someone who does understand?   I’m sure someone from the chapel would be willing to help,” he continues, “It’s worth trying.”   Britt says that he might be right.

Gaynor opens the laptop . . .

Gaynor opens up the laptop, 

. . . then makes a phone call

then picks up her phone and calls the coroner’s office;  

"May I speak to the coroner?"

“May I speak to the coroner, please?   I want to talk to him about Cheryl Thomas’ post-mortem.”   

'post-mortem genetic testing'

While she waits, she searches all the laptop for ‘post-mortem genetic testing’.

"Eleri, we need to talk . . ."

Rain is falling as Eleri approaches the alley;  Jinx calls to her, asking if she is on her way home, and insisting that they need to talk.   

". . . but not here"

“No, not here,” he says.

"Just tell me – I'm busy"

She irritably asks, “What do you mean, not here?   Just tell me – I’m busy.”

"You're far too busy for me . . ."

“Yes, of course you are – you’re far too busy for me,” he groans and she wonders what that is supposed to mean.   

". . . all I am to you is wallpaper"

“OK, all I am to you is wallpaper, OK?”

"What's eating poi alive, Huw?"

“What’s eating you alive, Huw?” she demands

"I want a bit of appreciation"

“I want a bit of appreciation – I do so much for you, Eleri, and you just don’t notice.”

"Grow up – you're not a little boy!"

She tells him to grow up, as he is not a little boy, 

"I don't think we've ever been right for each other"

so he continues, “We’re not right for each other at the moment – and, to be honest, I don’t think we’ve ever been right for each other.”

"Are you trying to finish with me?"

She looks incredulously at him, enquiring, “Are you trying to finish with me?”

"I'm not trying – I am finishing!"

“No, no – I’m not trying – I am!   It wasn’t a good start, trampling on everyone’s feelings like that!”   She cannot believe that he is still going on about that.   “At least it shows I’ve got a conscience,” he tells her.

"A conscience?"

“A conscience?” she sneers, “It  took you long enough to find it!”

"There are things about you I just don't like"

“There are things about you I just don’t like,” he goes on and she tells him that goes both ways.   “I agree – there are things about me that I don’t like – and you bring them out in me!”

"This is about Garry"

She demands whether this is about Garry, but he denies that it is anything to do with Garry.   “We’re destructive – that’s the problem!”

"Good luck finding someone as good as me!"

“Well, good luck trying to find someone as good as me,” she challenges him, “You’re damn lucky I hung around for so long!”   

Jinx walks away

Jinx simply turns and walks away.

Cai deal with his paperwork

In the Deri, Cai is writing something at the bar 

"I want a chat, that's all"

when Garry comes in and stands next to him.   “I want a chat, that’s all,” he says, 

"I've got nothing to say to you"

but Cai has nothing to say to him.

"You're taking advantage of Dani"

“You’ve got plenty to say to Dani,” Garry points out, “It’s not right that you’re taking advantage of her grief to get her into bed.”   

"You have no idea, Garry"

Cai accuses him of having no idea, 

"It won't be long before she sees through you"

but Garry continues, threateningly, “It won’t be long until she sees through you.”

"Dis you come back to make trouble?"

Cai wonders why Garry came back at all;  “To make trouble?   Especially after what happened?”   

"This is on your conscience"

Garry insists that is on Cai’s conscience.

"You can blame me as much as you want"

“You can blame me as much as you want, if that helps your conscience,” says Cai as he gets up to leave.

"Dani deserves better than you!"

“Dani deserves better than you!” Garry snarls.

"Yes, she does – but it's me she wants"

Cai does not dispute that, adding, “But it’s me she wants,” 

Garry does not like that

which obviously does not go down well with Garry.
