Another bill in the post

Kath walks into the Deri and complains to Cassie that she has another bill;  she is surprised to see Cassie going out somewhere and points out that there is also a card for her.   

"Your birthday's not for a couple of months"

“Your birthday’s not for another couple of months.”

"I don't want to be 21 again"

“No, thank goodness – I don’t want to be 21 again,” Cassie grumbles, while Kath urges her to open it.   “No, it’s junk,” but Kath is insistent that is not junk as the address has been written by hand.

"I'm going to the shop"

Cassie angrily replies that she gets one like that every day;  now she is going to the shop, but will not be long.

"We're coping at the moment"

In the shop Ieuan is telling Diane, “Well, we are coping at the moment – Indeg is making sure I’m eating properly – she brought enough Bolognese to feed the village the other night.”

"But you are only just coping"

Diane stresses that he is only just coping;  “Perhaps it’s time to look at more permanent options, rather than just respite for Anita.”   

"What do you mean?"

He does not understand what she is getting at, 

"Hasn't Kelly told you?"

so she continues, “Hasn’t Kelly told you?   The other day when we went out for lunch in the Deri, she wet herself – she didn’t notice at the time, but she was very angry with us for not telling her immediately.   I didn’t want to embarrass her in front of everyone.”

"I can appreciate that"

Ieuan appreciates that and is told that she needs more care now;  “Can’t you see that?   Eleri’s told Kelly there’s a room available in Brynawelon.”

"Have we reached that point already?"

Ieuan cannot believe that they have reached that point already, 

"There have been several incidents"

but is informed that there have been several incidents recently.   

"Anita should be with me"

“Anita should be with me!” he insists;  

"Think about it, Ieuan"

Diane urges him to think about it,

Rhys brings flowers for Kelly

Rhys visits number 7 with some flowers for Kelly, which she describes as ‘lush’.   

"I wanted to check how you are"

“I just wanted to check to see how you are,” he says.

Kelly glances upstairs

She looks anxiously upstairs, 

"Aye, not bad"

then replies, “Aye, not bad.”   

"Did you see that Paris deal?"

He wonders if she saw that Paris deal that he sent to her yesterday and she agrees that she did, commenting that the hotel looked lovely, 

"Proper romantic, like"

“And proper romantic, like.”

He is anxious to book it, but Kelly does not answer, 

"So you've changed your mind"

so he assumes that she has changed her mind.

However, she makes it very clear that she has not done so;  “Rhys, I don’t know – 

"There's so much going on here like"

 “there’s so much going on here, like.   Do we have to book it today?   Can’t we wait until next week?   Or at least until I’ve talked to Ieuan to see if it’s feasible for me to have four whole days off?”

"I can't wait to have you all to myself"

He agrees that of course it can wait;  “I just can’t wait to have you all to myself,” he says – 

"I can't blame you for that"

and Kelly cannot blame him for that.   

"Ooh!   Lookout you two!"

They are about to kiss when Anita comes down the stairs, exclaiming, “Ooh!   Look at you two – don’t you both look nice?”   Kelly wonders how long Auntie Anita has been spying on them.   

"Long enough"

“Long enough,” she answers.

"I don't have to worry about impressing the family"

“At least, I don’t have to worry about impressing my girlfriend’s family,” laughs Rhys, 

"Kelly's a very special girl"

but is warned by Anita that Kelly is a very special girl.  

She seizes the flowers

Then she sees the flowers and grabs them from Kelly.   

"I'll put them in water . . ." 

She thinks they are absolutely lovely and goes to put them in water, 

". . . so you two can carry on flirting"

remarking that the two of them can carry on flirting.

"They didn't have any Hobnobs"

Cassie comes back to the Deri, complaining that they did not have any Hobnobs;  “We shall have to make do with custard creams.”

"You were behaving oddly earlier . . ."

Kath is concerned that there is something wrong;  “You were behaving oddly earlier – 

". . . and we've said no secrets"

“and we’ve said there will be no secrets between us.   So, out with it – what’s going on?”

Cassie hands over the letter

Cassie takes the letter which arrived earlier out of her pocket and tells Kath to open it.

"You'd make a terrible milkman"

Kelly is cleaning the hob at number 7;  “Do you know what?  You’d make a terrible milkman,” she tells Ieuan.   He apologises for taking so long, but bumped into Diane.   

"Let me guess – Brynawelon"

“And what did she have to say?   Let me guess – Brynawelon.”

"She said Anita had wet herself"

“Yes – and she said that Anita had wet herself in the Deri – why didn’t you tell me?”   

"Auntie Neet didn't want anyone to know"

Kelly replies that Auntie Neet did not want anyone to know.   

"I'm not just 'anyone', Kelly"

“But I’m not just ‘anyone’, Kelly,” he protests, “We have to trust each other  – otherwise us looking after her won’t work.”

"I don't want her to go to Brynawelon permanently"

“I don’t want Auntie Neet to go to Brynawelon permanently, right?” replies Kelly, but Ieuan imagines that the day-care option would be better for now.   

"We have to show Diane we are considering it"

He argues that they have to show Diane that they are considering another care option for Anita.

"I'm not letting Diane dictate our decisions!"

“OK, whoa – I’m not letting Diane dictate our decisions – got it?” snarls Kelly.   He agrees with that, but the more he thinks about it, 

"I think Anita would enjoy it"

the more he believes that Anita would enjoy a day out to Brynawelon, a few days a week.

"I'll do more shifts at APD"

Kelly reminds him about the price tag, so he proposes “I’ll do more shifts in APD or something.   You were right the other day when you said we had to stop being so pessimistic – 

"We could even sell Anita's car"

“hey, we could even sell Anita’s car.”

"I don't understand what I've done wrong"

What neither of them realise is that Anita is standing in the doorway and listening to them.   “I don’t understand what I’ve done wrong,” she says.

"So this is Steffan's son?"

Upstairs in the Deri flat, Kath asks Cassie, “So this is Steffan’s son?   

"Who's his mother?"

“Who’s his mother?”

The reply is that it is Mari, as far as Cassie is aware;   

"Do you remember Mari Wilson?"

“Do you remember Mari Wilson?”   Kath finds it quite remarkable that Cassie did not know anything about him.   “I knew she was pregnant at one time, yes, but I thought she had an abortion – she couldn’t face having Stefan’s baby, and who could blame her?”

"Well, she obviously changed her mind"

“Well, she obviously changed her mind,” comments Kath.   The only information that Cassie gets now is what is in his letters;  it is apparent that this is by no means the first letter.   

Now Cassie regrets saying anything

Now Cassie regrets that she said anything.

"Why are we sitting in silence?"

Kelly and Ieuan sit down with Anita, who wonders if there is a reason why they are sitting in silence.   

"You've been having a hard time recently"

Ieuan rather awkwardly begins, “Well, you’ve had a hard time of things recently,” 

"It's no different to usual"

but Anita does not think it has been any different to usual.

"We feel that we need more help"

“You’ve dealt with things brilliantly – but we feel, the three of us, Diane, Kelly and me, that we need a bit more help.   

"Perhaps you could go to Brynawelon for a few days"

That’s why Kelly and I were discussing the idea that perhaps you could go to Brynawelon – just for a few days.

"I'm not trying to cause you any problems"

Anita is in tears and tells them that she is sorry;  “I’m not trying to cause you any problems.   I’ll make more of an effort not to get so confused.   

"Please, I don't want to leave you"

“Please, I don’t want to leave you.”

"I'm not asking you to move in full-time . . ."

Kelly is in tears as Ieuan tries to explain, “I’m not asking you to move in full-time;  

". . . when Kelly and I are working"

just a few days, you know, when Kelly and I are working.”

"It's super sociable there"

Kelly takes over;  “And, you know, it’s super sociable there  – Dai goes there and Iori – and do you remember playing rummy with Esther that time?”   

"Who's Esther?"

Anita has no idea who Esther is, but is told that she had a laugh.

“You can’t force me to go there!” Anita snarls, but she is assured that they would never force her, 

"Not in a million years!"

not in a million years.

"I know what's going on!"

Anita points across at the flowers and shouts, “I know what’s going on!   

"Lover boy wants me out of here!"

“Lover boy wants me out of here!   That old Hywel Llywelyn!”

"I'm not going anywhere near an old people's home!

When Ieuan tries to console her, she shouts, “No, I won’t calm down – and I’m not going anywhere near an old people’s home either!   

"I'm disappointed at you!"

“I’m disappointed that you even considered such a thing!”   She rushes upstairs, screaming.

Kelly and Ieuan are in despair

Kelly and Ieuan are in despair.

"You haven't opened most of these"

Kath is surprised that Cassie has not opened most of the letters;  “I opened the first one – that was about six months ago,” says Cassie.   

"So you've ignored the boy for six months?"

Kath is outraged that she has ignored the boy for six months.

"Have you forgotten what happened to Steffan?"

“Look, the nicest thing I can do for this boy is to leave him alone – have you forgotten what happened to Steffan?”   

Kath stresses that was not her fault, but she wonders what if this Owen takes after his father.

"Come on, Cassie, please"

“Oh, come on, Cassie, please,” begs Kath, but Cassie does not want to go through that again.

"That business with Tom was hard enough"

“It’s hard enough going through this business with Tom – I can’t go through that with Steffan – I can’t!”

"Perhaps he's nothing like Steffan"

Kath can understand that, but adds, “Perhaps he’s nothing like Steffan –have you thought about that?   Come on, Cassie, give him a chance.”

Ieuan brings something for Anita

Things have calmed down at number 7 and Ieuan brings Anita a cup of tea with something to eat;  “Can we talk sensibly about this now?”   She declares that she does not want it.

“Kelly’s been to the shop specially to get the chocolates for you,” he continues 

"Have you post-lunch sugar hit"

and Kelly encourages her to have her post-lunch sugar hit.

"I'm too upset to eat it"

“I’m too upset to eat it,” Anita tells them, but then there is a knock at the door;  Kelly goes to answer it.

"Diane's here to see you"

“Diane’s here to see you, Auntie Neet.”   

"What are you doing here?"

Anita demands what she is doing there.

"Do I need an excuse to visit my friend?"

“Do I need an excuse to go and visit my friend?” is the answer, so Anita invites her to sit down.

“As long as you’re not here to persuade me to go to Brynawelon!”   

"I came for a game of cards – if that's all right"

Diane maintains that she just came for a game of cards, if that is all right with Anita.

"I've got a lot of APD work to do"

Ieuan proposes to leave the ladies alone, as he has a lot of APD work to do.   

"I'm going out as well"

Kelly puts on her coat, saying that she will go out as well, 

"Yes, you go!"

with Anita sternly advising her, “Yes, you go !   

"What game are we playing?"

“well, Diane, which game are we playing?”

Possibly a bag of barley malt?

goes straight across to the brewery, where Rhys has just brought in a  heavysack;  

Kelly arrives . . .

he is, naturally, pleased to see her 

. . . and their kiss is uninterrupted this time

and they do manage to kiss this time.   He asks if everything is all right with Anita 

"It's better now"

and she grudgingly agrees that it is better now.

"I hate to watch how hard this is for you"

“I hate to watch how hard this is for you,” he says;  she adds that it is going to get harder – that is why she does not think it is a good idea to go to Paris.

"You deserve someone who's going to put you first"

“I want to go away with you and I really want to explore this relationship with you, too, but I have to put Auntie Neet first.   I can’t give you what you want – and you deserve someone who’s going to put you first.”

"I don't want anyone else . . ."

Rhys replies that he does not want anyone else;  

". . . it's you I want – I thought I'd made that clear"

“It’s you I want – you caring for Anita isn’t a problem for me – I thought I’d made that clear.”

Kelly agrees that he has, so he wonders what is the problem.   

"I'm the problem – I don't have the energy"

“Me,” she replies, “I’m the problem.   I just – I don’t have the energy to look after Auntie Neet, run a business and start a new relationship.   

"We have to end things now, Rhys . . ."

“I just feel we have to end things now, Rhys –before we develop proper feelings.   

". . . and I need you as a friend"

“And I need you as a friend – if you’re happy with that.”

"I'm sorry things have come to this"

He agrees that of course he is and they are both sorry that things have come to this;  

She leaves the brewery in tears . . .

she turns and leaves the brewery, 

. . . and Rhys feels much the same

with both of them in tears.

"He sounds like a really lovely lad"

As they both look through the letters, Kath remarks, “He sounds like a really lovely lad,” 

"He doesn't say much"

but Cassie maintains that he does not say much in the letters.   

"There's a phone number here

“There’s a phone number here,” Kath notices, “Come on, Cassie – you’ve avoided this for long enough.”

"Let's see what you have to say to your grandmother"

Cassie picks up her phone and dials the number, muttering, “Well, let’s see what you have to say to your grandmother.”   

The number is not recognised

All they hear is a message advising the number has not been recognised, which they find very strange.

"We're trying to help"

The card game is in progress, as Diane explains to Anita, “We’re trying to help,” but Anita does not want to talk about it.   

"You're trying to get rid of me!"

She knows that they are trying to get rid of her, something which is denied by Diane.   

"We think too much of you to do that"

“The three of us think too much of you to do that.   There was a reason why you asked me to be power-of-attorney, wasn’t there?   You knew I wouldn’t be scared to say what needed to be said.”

"What needs to be said, then?"

Anita angrily puts down her cards, demanding, “What’s needs to be said, then, Diane?”   She is told that she needs to start going to Brynawelon every now and then.

"Siwsi would love to see more of you"

“Do you remember Siwsi?   She works there and you already know her – she’d love to see more of you.”   

"I'm not bad enough to go there yet"

Anita maintains that she is not bad enough to go there yet, 

"It's not just for people who are ill"

but is reminded that Brynawelon is not just for people who are ill;  there is a lot of fun to be had there.

“Do you remember we talked about the fact that Dai goes there?   

"Do you think Dai would go if it wasn't a nice place?"

“Do you think my husband would go there if it wasn’t a nice place?”

"Perhaps you've got a point . . . "

Anita concedes that Diane has a point and is urged to consider it;  

". . . but I'm not going there permanently"

“As long as you accept I’m not ready to go there permanently.”   

"No-one's asking you to do that"

Diane assures her that no one is asking her to do that.
