Breakfast time at Cysgod y Glyn

Garry is eating his breakfast at Cysgod y Glyn when Eleri asks him, “Have you seen my keys?”   She searches frantically around the flat, then suggests,

"Could you help me look for them?"

“Do you think you could help me look for them?”

"I'm eating my breakfast"

He protests that he is eating his breakfast, but she maintains that she cannot be late today.

"No wonder Jinx finished with you"

“No wonder Jinx finished with you if you’re this high maintenance!” Garry remarks, but then relents, enquiring where she last saw them.

"If I knew that, I wouldn't be looking for them!"

“If I knew that, I wouldn’t be looking for them!” she snarls.

Papers fall from the cupboard

He opens a cupboard and a pile of paperwork falls out;  Eleri tells him that it is her father’s junk.

"Are you and your father related?"

Garry picks them up, wondering if she and her father are related, as she is so minimalist.”

She says that she has already told Brynmor to clear his junk,

"Was his twin this messy?"

so Garry casually asks, “Was his twin this messy?” but she does not know, as she never met him.   “Didn’t Brynmor ever talk about him?”

She answers that Brynmor only talks about himself,

"Ah – found them!"

then at last discovers the missing keys and hurriedly leaves the flat.

Garry has found something of interest

Garry has found a small and rather dog-eared book, which he seems to find interesting.

Kelly approaches

Kelly arrives at the brewery as Rhys is pulling out some bunting from a bag;

"What do you think?"

“What do you think?   For the Six Nations – I thought we could do joint nights, offering Six Nations-themed food.   Pizza for Italy, baguettes for France, haggis for Scotland.”

She is not very interested

However, Kelly is less than enthusiastic, although he considers that it to be a brilliant idea;  furthermore, the Deri has not planned anything yet, so it will be a win-win.

"I'm not in the right frame of mind"

She stops him there;  “I’m not exactly in the right frame of mind to discuss this today, truth be told.”

"What you need is a break"

He decides that what she needs is a break, but she laughs at the mere suggestion.

"I'll just jump into my private jet"

“Aye, go on, then –I’ll just jump into my private jet outside, shall I?,” but he stresses that he is serious and that going away would do her the world of good.

"Paris, madame?"

Finding the appropriate flag, he suggests, “Paris, Madame – oui, oui?”

"The French are so romantic"

Kelly has always thought that the French are so romantic;  “They could talk about taking the bins out and it would sound sexy.”   Rhys proposes that they go to Paris for a long weekend – his treat.”

"Not interrupting, am I"

Unfortunately, at this point, Eleri comes into view;  “I’m not interrupting, am I?

"I'd like to speak to Kelly in private"

“I would like to speak to Kelly in private.”   Rhys takes the hint and goes about brewery business.

“I’d like to discuss something – fancy meeting in Tamed in five minutes?”

"I have to go to the Cash and Carry"

Kelly has to go to the cash and carry,

"How about lunchtime?"

so they arrange to meet at lunchtime.

"What's that about?"

Kelly wonders what that is all about.

Colin is catching up on housework

The MFC flat is in rather an untidy state and Colin is doing the vacuuming when Britt arrives back from her retreat and surprises him.

"You're back early!"

“Goodness, you’re back early!” he exclaims, “I wasn’t expecting you until later.

"I haven't had a chance to prepare lunch"

“I haven’t had a chance to prepare lunch or anything.”

"I had a big breakfast"

She replies that she had a big breakfast earlier and he wants to know how the rest of the retreat went.   She seems very enthusiastic, describing it as, “Incredible – I feel as if I’ve had a chance to think about what I want from life – and what I want to give back as a thank you for the life I have.”

"I'm glad you enjoyed"

Colin is very glad that she enjoyed it;  she goes on to say that she has learnt so much

"I can't wait to tell you my plans"

and cannot wait to tell him about all the big plans she has.

That sounds ominous

He wonders, with some trepidation, what those plans might be.

Dai orders drinks from Geraint

Dai is in the Deri with Diane and Anita;  he tells Geraint the barman, “While you’re on your feet, bring me two orange juices and a pint of beer – thank you.”

At the bar, Brynmor is looking very serious as he drinks his coffee.

"I fancy a three-course meal today"

Diane fancies a three-course meal today, stressing that they are there to enjoy themselves.

"Incan't remember the last time I had a three-course meal"

Anita cannot remember the last time she had a three-course meal,

"And Dai is paying!"

so Diane regards to that as all the more reason to have one – plus of course, the fact that Dai is paying.

"I'm only on pension, mind!"

He reminds Diane that he is on his pension, but she replies that he has plenty of money for other things.

"You've been very kind to me"

Anita insists that she should be paying for the meal because they have been so good to her recently;  “You’re very kind.”

Dai shouts to Brynmor

Dai shouts across to Brynmor, “Do you want to join us?   Bob Geldof here is insisting on feeding everyone for free!”

"Take no notice of him!"

Diane tells Anita to take no notice of him, as he is not funny.

"What have you found out about him?"

Obviously, Brynmor has been waiting for a phone call, as he very rapidly picks it up when it rings;  “Thanks for phoning back – so, what have you found out about him?

"That's interesting"

“Is he?   That’s interesting – OK, thank you.”

"I feel that I'm part of something bigger"

As Colin stirs the food heating on the hob, Britt tells him, “Yes, I feel that I’m part of something bigger, you know?   And I want to use the experiences I’ve had over the last week to do positive things in life – to do good things, to help people.”

"Ah – that's lovely"

He regards that as a lovely attitude, and she knows exactly how she is going to start;

"Feeding homeless people at MFC"

“By feeding homeless people at MFC – everyone on the retreat thought it was a brilliant idea.”

Colin is concerned about the financial implications

Colin evidently thinks otherwise;  “I’m sure they did, but we have to make sure that we’re not losing out financially.”

"We're so fortunate, Col"

She is naïvely confident that they will not be, describing them as so fortunate.   “But there’s still a lot to sort out – I’m determined to make a difference –

"Perhaps Megan can help"

“actually, perhaps Megan can help – there’s so much to organise.”

Britt dashes out of the flat . . .

She hurries out of the flat, leaving Colin still stirring the saucepan

. . . leaving Colin wondering where she has gone

and wondering where she has disappeared.

"Garry's been fine with me"

Kelly and Eleri are in the deli;  “I know what people are saying about Garry, but he’s been fine with me so far,” says Eleri.

Kelly imagines that Jinx is jumping for joy now that Garry is staying in the flat,

"Huw and I understand each other"

but she is assured, “Huw and I understand each other.”

Kelly is sure that Eleri did not invite her here to discuss the living arrangements at Cysgod y Glyn,

"There's a room at Brynawelon for Anita|"

so she is informed, “I wanted to tell you that there’s an empty room at Brynawelon for Anita.”

Kelly was not expecting that

This comes as a shock to Kelly, as Eleri continues, “We could make it a part-time arrangement to begin with, if you want.   That would be a good way for Anita to settle in gradually.   Perhaps it’s happened sooner than you expected – I’m sure you’ve been struggling already –

"You look shattered"

I’m sorry to say this, but you look shattered.   Things will only get worse.”

"I'm fine"

“Right,” says Kelly, “I’m fine.”

She is informed that Brynawelon is very popular and they have a long waiting list, even for part-time places;

"Get back to me by the end of the week"

“It would be good to get one foot in the door – think about it.   I want to prioritise you, but I can’t keep the space open for long.   Get back to me by the end of the week.”

"What's going on between you and Rhys?"

As she puts on her coat to leave, she enquires, “What’s going on between you and Rhys, then?”

"He obviously likes you . . ."

Kelly maintains that nothing is going on.   “He obviously likes you – if I were you,

". . . ~I'd jump at the chance to go to Paris"

“I’d jump at the chance to go to Paris.”

She leaves the details about Brynawelon

She leaves Kelly with a sheet of paper detailing the charges,

Out in the street, she meets her father

then walks along the street by Tomos ac Ellis, where she meets her father coming towards her.

"How are things at Brynawelon?"

“How are you?   And how are things going at Brynawelon?”

"Nice to work somewhere where I get respect"

She replies that it is nice to work somewhere where she gets respect.

"Can you move your stuff?"

Then, she is about to walk away, she adds, “Before I forget, can you move your stuff out of my flat as soon as possible?   I’ve got a lodger who’s tidy and neither of us wants to look sit down and look at your mess.”

"I hope Garry's not going through my 'mess'"

He objects to her describing it in that manner and hopes that Garry is not going through his ‘mess’.

"He seemed to be enjoying himself earlier"

“He seemed to be enjoying himself earlier,” she comments.

"She's found God?"

Now Colin is up at Cysgod y Glyn, where Garry demands, “She’s found God?”

"She wants to start feeding the homeless"

Colin explains that he is not sure, but she wants to start feeding the homeless at MFC,

"That's not a bad idea"

which Garry considers to be a good idea.

"It's going to cost a fortune"

“It’s going to cost a fortune – and I don’t know where it will end!” moans Colin.   Garry insists that he is worrying needlessly,

"She used to go tot the chapel with Gloria"

recalling that she used to go to the chapel with Gloria at Christmas time and perhaps she is just finding some comfort in it.   You know what she’s like once she has an idea in her head – if it gives her some happiness, what’s the problem?”

“Well, if it was just two loaves and two fish, I wouldn’t say anything,” says Colin,

"Aren't chicken nuggets and French fries mention int the Bible?"

Garry asks, “Aren’t chicken nuggets and French fries mentioned in the Bible?”

"Not at my Sunday School, they weren't"

Colin says he does not remember that from the Sunday School he went to, then their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Brynmor.

"Speaking of God, here's Brynmor!"

“Speaking of God, here’s Brynmor,” quips Garry, “What have I done to deserve your company this morning?”

"Haven't you got a shop to run?"

Colin is asked whether he has a shop to run and, looking at his watch, realises that he should be going.

"Lovely to catch up with you"

He says that it has been lovely to catch up with the two of them and they will have to do it again some time.

"It's time for another little chat"

When he has gone, Brynmor maintains that it is time for them to have another little chat.

Garry seems to be quite relaxed about that

Garry takes another sip of his tea.

"There's nothing like a good steak, is there?"

As they eat their meal at the Deri, Diane complains about the noise Dai is making as he eats.   “I’m enjoying it – there’s nothing like a good steak, is there?   I don’t understand people who live on nuts and lentils, especially at this time of year –

"You need meat to put hairs on your chest!"

“you need meat to put hairs on your chest!”

This curry is nice

Diane says that her curry is nice and Diane asks how she is finding it, not working at APD.   “Well, sometimes it is a bit strange, especially when I walk past the place in the morning.”

"You've got a chance to enjoy yourself"

She is told that at least she is getting a chance to enjoy herself a bit.

"What?   Watching Bargain Hunt?"

Anita replies, “What?   Watching Bargain Hunt and Prynhawn Da [Good Afternoon on S4C] all day, is it?   Yeah, that’s great.   A little bit of vinegar would be nice on these chips.”

"I'll get Geraint to bring you some"

Dai is about to call on Geraint to bring some vinegar,

"I can still do things for myself"

but Anita insists that she can still do things for herself.

There seems to have been slight accident

As she walks across to the bar, they notice that there is a wet patch on the back of her clothes.

"Oh, no!"

“Oh no!” sighs Diane

She quickly swaps over the chairs

and quickly swaps over the chairs;

"What on earth are you doing?"

Dai wonders what on earth she is doing.

"When are you going to realise?"

“When are you going to realise?” Brynmor demands,

"Realise what?"

and Garry wants to know what he is talking about.   “That you’re wasting your time looking into my past.   It’s rather pathetic, to be honest.”

Garry smiles at him.

"We're quite similar in a way"

“We’re quite similar in a way,” Brynmor continues,

"We're nothing like each other'

but Garry is quite definite they are nothing like each other,

"We've both done things we regret . . ."

“Are you sure about that?” wonders Brynmor, “Because perhaps we’ve both done things we regret in our lives;

". . . what happened to Seren was . . ."

“what happened to Seren in the warehouse was . . .

". . . what shall we say – unfortunate?"

“well, what shall we say – unfortunate?   And it would be a great shame if some people found out what you said to the police to be released from prison early.”

Garry is amused

Garry laughs as he hears this,

"Do you like a gamble?"

then asks Brynmor, “Do you like a gamble?   Well, as you say that we are so similar, who do you think has most to lose – between us, our big secrets?   Me – for helping the police out with some minor matters –

"Who has hidden a secret for years . . ."

“or you, who has hidden a secret for years that would destroy so many lives?

". . . one which would interest the police"

“And one that the police would have a great deal of interest in.

"I'd say the odds are stacked against you!"

“Well, I’d say that the odds are stacked against you –

"Are you willing  to take the risk?"

“but the question is – are you willing to take the risk?”   The two of them glower at each other.

"How did it go with Eleri?"

Kelly and Rhys arrive at number 21 and he asks her how it went with Eleri;  “She offered Auntie Anita a room at Brynawelon,” she replies and he wonders if she is happy with that.

"Over my dead body!"

“Over my dead body!” she declares, “Rhys, I don’t want to talk about it.”

"Was Eleri all right with you?"

He can appreciate that and asks if Eleri was all right with her;  “You know, surprisingly, yes –

"Actually a human being for once in her life"

“she was actually a human being for once in her life,” Kelly answers, with amazement.

Rhys will put on the kettle for a cup of tea;

"Do you know what else she said?"

“Do you know what else she said?”

"That I'm handsome and a real catch?"

He assumes that it that he is good-looking and a real catch.

"I should go to Paris with you"

“Not quite, no.   She said perhaps I should go to Paris with you for the weekend.”

"I always said that Eleri is a wise woman"

“I always said that Eleri is a wise woman!” he exclaims;  Kelly agrees that for perhaps the first and only time, she actually agrees with Eleri.

"Tres bien, Eleri!"

Rhys cannot believe his luck, and comments, in an approximation of a French accent, “Tres bien, Eleri!”

Kelly is delighted

kissing Kelly’s hand.

Colin is still doing housework

Colin is on his hands and knees in the kitchen when Britt returns,

"Megan doesn't want to help!"

complaining, “I just spoke to Megan and she doesn’t want to help!   She said she doesn’t have the time – what on earth does she do all day?   She hasn’t done a tidy days work in years – typical!”

"She is getting on a bit, Britt"

Colin points out that she is getting on a bit, but Britt is concerned, “What about people who need help?

"There are loads of homeless people"

“I know for a fact that there are loads of homeless people in this area who would love some help.”

"Well, I'll do it on my own!"

He can sympathise with that, but still she drones on, “Well, if Megan doesn’t want to help, I’ll do it on my own!”

Back at number 7

Anita arrives back home at number 7, accompanied by Dai and Diane.

"I think we need to go upstairs . . ."

“Listen, before we have a cup of tea, I think we need to go upstairs for a minute,” says Diane, “I think you need to change your clothes.

". . . you've had an accident"

“You’ve had an accident,” she whispers, “There’s no need to feel embarrassed.”

"I thought we were friends!'

“I’m not embarrassed – but I do feel angry, because I thought we were friends!” shouts Anita.

"We are friends"

Diane protests that they are friends,

"Friends are open and honest"

but is told, “Friends are open and honest – and they trust each other!”

"I think I'll be getting home"

At this point, Dai thinks that he had better go home and leave them.

"Yes, go – and take her with you!"

Anita yells, “Yes, go – and take her with you!   If you’re trying to help, Diane, why are you telling me now?

"Why didn't you tell me in the Deri?"

“Why didn’t you tell me in the Deri  that I’d wet myself?   I don’t want you to feel sorry for me!”

"Snails are lovely with ketchup and mustard!"

Rhys and Kelly have just come out of number 21 and are walking along the road;  he insists that she cannot go to Paris and not try the snails.  “They’re lovely with some ketchup and mustard.”

"Nefi wen!"

Then they hear raised voices;  Anita is throwing out her visitors, with Dai growling, “Nefi wen!”

"I don't want to see you here ever again!"

“And I don’t want to see you here ever again, do you understand?” Anita shouts.   Dai protests that Diane was only trying to be kind.

"You were both laughing at me!"

“No – you were both laughing at me!”

"What the hell is going on?"

As Kelly walks into the middle of this, she demands, “What the hell is going on?”

The door is slammed shit

and the door of number 7 is slammed in her face.

"We went for a quiet meal"

Dai explains that they went out for a quiet meal;  Diane adds, “And Anita had a little accident.”

"Perhaps you should; consider Eleri's offer"

Kelly turns to open the door, as Rhys suggests that perhaps she should consider Eleri’s offer.   Diane wants to know what offer that is.

“Eleri offered Auntie Anita a room at Brynawelon –

"Over my dead body!"

“over my dead body!” snarls Kelly, “Excuse me.”

"Life can be so unfair sometimes"

Dai groans, “Life can be so unfair sometimes – come on, Diane,” and they head back to Bryntirion,

Why sis left outside the door . . .

while Rhys stands, looking very worried, outside the door.

. . . whilst inside Anita is in tears

Inside Anita is in tears, telling Kelly, “I feel so embarrassed –

"I'm scared . . . "

“and I’m scared –

". . . what's happening to me, Kelly?"

“what is happening to me, Kelly?”
