21 January 2025

Mark looks at Jinx . . .

Mark looks for a moment at the prostrate Jinx,

. . . and then leaves him there

then panics and runs away.

Diane has gone to Cysgod y Glyn, where she remonstrates with Kath;  “Just tell me where he is!”

"He was in the Deri"

Kath replies that the last time she saw him, he was still in the Deri

"You probably know about this!"

and Diane rages, “You probably knew about this jobs scandal!”

"I had no idea"

Kath tells her quite unequivocally, “I had no idea,” but Diane does not believe that.

"Thanks to you they got planning permission!"

“Yes, Diane, because Brynmor has deceived me, too!   What are you doing here, anyway?   It’s thanks to you that they got planning permission.”

"What are we going to do about this?"

Diane insists that she did not vote for this and calls it disgraceful – something on which they both agree.   “So what are we going to do about it?” shouts Diane, “We can’t let them get away with this.”

"You've lost any semblance of a backbone!"

When there is no answer, Diane continues, “What’s happened to you, Kath?   Since meeting Brynmor, you’ve lost any semblance of a backbone!”

Kath is furious

Kath turns to glower at her, so she leaves the flat.

Mark tries to wash away the evidence

Back at Maes-y-Deri, Mark washes his hands;  Gwern asks if he is OK

"I cut my hand on the gate"

and he says that he cut his hand on the gate.   Dani wonders where Gwern has been and he says that he has been playing football.   “What – at this time of night?” she demands.

"It's 2025 – they have floodlights!"

He replies, “It’s 2025 – they have floodlights.”

"Well, where's the champagne, Mark?"

Then Dani wonders where the champagne is, which Mark went out especially to get.   His excuse is that he forgot, as there was a lot going on at the Deri.

"A load of people got this message"

“A load of people got this message – it looks like everyone got it,” he says and she wants to know who sent it.   Gwern enquires what is for dinner and is informed that they have already had it, so it will have to be crisps or cereal.

"Give me the money and I'll go to MFC"

“Give me the money and I’ll go to MFC,” he suggests, but Dani is adamant that she will go,

"I still want that champagne!"

as she still wants the champagne.   Mark does not look much like celebrating and Gwern eyes him suspiciously.

"I've been deceived as well, Iolo"

In the Deri, Diane is trying to convince Iolo that she has also been deceived;

"But you're not going to lose work!"

“But you’re not going to lose work!” he grumbles.

She points out that this is going to affect Jason at APD.

“This development was supposed to bring in a lot of income,” she stresses, and Iolo thought that this dam was his chance to finally earn some decent money, so he could give Greta the future she deserves.

"You haven't done a good job so far, have you?"

He is assured by Diane that she will work hard to save those jobs, but he sneers, “You haven’t done a good job so far, have you?”

"There he is – the big con-man!"

Then Brynmor appears from upstairs;  “There he is – the big con-man!” announces Iolo;   Diane exclaims that she wants a word with him,

"We'll talk about it in the morning"

which he tries to put off until the morning.   She is having none of that, declaring that the morning is not good enough.

"We want answers now!"

Iolo is adamant, “We want answers now!”

“You’re starting to sound like your father,” says Brynmor, and Iolo is pleased that his Dad at least has principles.

"This dam is business"

“This dam is business – and the company has a duty to make sure it succeeds.”

"And we're not good enough?"

Iolo maintains that this sounds as if the standard of local workers is not good enough.

"No  — you're just too expensive"

“No – you’re just too expensive,” is Brynmor’s simple answer, then he walks out, ignoring Diane's insistence that they have not finished with him yet.

"I've got something for you!"

On his way to the door, he meets Kath, who announces that she has something for him, taking off her wedding ring

Her ring is placed on the bar

and proceeding to put it down on the bar.   “Come back to Cysgod y Glyn,” she tells him, “You’ve got some packing to do!”

Brynmor is not happy

He looks upset about this.

Colin and Britt put out the rubbish

Colin and Britt come out of the back door of MFC with bags of rubbish;  “I still can’t believe it, you know,” says Britt and Colin feels the same.

"I thought Brynmor was trustworthy"

He thought that Brynmor was trustworthy;  “And Jinx – with his ‘bit on the side’!” snarls Britt, “He’s let us all down.”

"Did you hear that?"

Then Colin hears a noise;  “Did you hear that?” he says

He goes to investigate . . .

and goes to investigate.

. . . and finds Jinx

He discovers Jinx lying in the alley

"Are you all right, Jinx?"

and asks him if he is all right.

At Cysgod y Glyn, Brynmor wants to discuss this sensibly;  “Can I try to explain?”

"I want you out of here tonight!"

Kath’s only reply is, “I want you out of here tonight!”   He insists that he is not going anywhere,

"I'll move out, then"

so she goes on, “I’ll move out, then,” as she pours herself a drink.   Brynmor reminds her that Maes-y-Deri is full,

"The flat in the Deri is empty"

so she concludes, “The flat in the Deri is empty – they’ve finished the living room – so I can sleep on the sofa, OK?”

Eleri comes in

Eleri comes in and Kath informs her, “You’ll be glad to know that I’m moving out.

"Your father has made a fool of me again"

“Your father has made a fool of me again – and you know what?”

Eleri picks up her drink

Eleri has picked up Kath’s glass, which she promptly retrieves,

"Nobody makes a fool of Kath Jones"

continuing, “Nobody makes a fool of Kath Jones, do you understand?”

"Did you sent that message"

Brynmor asks his daughter, “Did you do it?   Send that message?”

At first she does not reply, then informs him that people have a right to know what is going on.

"I'm fed up with you telling me what to do!"

“And I’m fed up with you telling me what I can and can’t do!”

“Oh – so that’s what it is – you don’t like the fact that I’m your boss,” he snarls.

"Is that why you came here?"

Kath is getting the impression that is why they came there to the valley;  “Because of this dam!”

"There's no other reason to come to this 'hole'!"

Eleri derisively maintains that there is no other reason to come to this ‘hole’.   “You’ve come here to deceive us all!” Kath exclaims.   Eleri dismisses it as simply business,

"Is that what I was – simply business?"

while Kath demands, “Is that what I was – simply business?”   Brynmor protests that they were together before that, but she demands, “Just stop lying, please!” and walks out of the room.

"See what you've done?"

Do you see what you’ve done?” Brynmor reprimands his daughter,

"This is all your fault!"

but she bitterly replies that it is all his fault.

Britt is at the Deri

As Britt comes into the Deri with Iolo,

"I'm not surprised someone attacked him!"

she argues, “I’m not surprised that someone attacked him!”

Neither is Iolo, who assumes that Brynmor is the mastermind behind it.   It was obvious how angry he was with Jinx for opening his mouth.   He surmises that Jinx might have sent the text to everyone.

"Why was an ambulance here?"

Then Dani comes in and asks why an ambulance was there;  Iolo and Britt look at each other.

Colin accompanies Jinx to the hospital . . .

Meanwhile Jinx is being wheeled into the hospital by the ambulance crew, accompanied by Colin,

. . . and looks very worried

who thanks them for their help.

"It's just a scratch"

As they sit at Maes-y-Deri, Gwern asks Mark if his hand hurts and is told that it is just a scratch.   “You made a lot of fuss for a scratch,” is Gwern’s comment and he says that he is not good with blood.

"Do you know anything about Jinx?"

The door opens and Dani returns;  “Do you know anything about Jinx?” she demands.

"Yeah, he cheated on you!"

Gwern replies that he cheated on her.   “Don’t be clever – did you see him?”   Gwern says that he did not.

"Someone has attacked him"

“Are you sure?   Because someone has attacked him.”

"Why do I always get the blame?"

Gwern asks if she thinks it was him;  “Why do I always get the blame?” but she still wants an answer.

"OK, yes, it was me . . ."

He blurts out, “Yes, OK, it was me –

". . . happy now?"

“happy now?” and goes upstairs.

Mark feels bad about this

Both Dani and Mark are stunned.

Brynmor is doing some thinking . . .

Brynmor is deep in thought

. . . when Kath has finished her packing

when Kath comes back into the room, having packed her case, and puts down her key on the worktop;  “I won’t be wanting this any more.”

"Can't we sort this out, Kath?"

Brynmor insists that he wants to sort things out,

"You don't listen, Brynmor!"

but she growls at him, “Do you know what?   You don’t listen, Brynmor!”

"One little secret?"

He demands whether she is going to throw everything away over one ‘little secret’.

“One little secret?” she repeats.

"You were happy to forgive Dyff"

Eleri puts her oar in;  “You were happy to forgive Dyff – and he’d pretended to be dead for a quarter of a century!”

"This one's protecting his pocket!"

Kath angrily responds that he was protecting his family;  “This one’s protecting his pocket!”

"Pockets you've been happy to empty"

“Pockets you’ve been happy to empty,” Eleri continues, “I don’t know why you’re bothering, Dad – you’re better off without her!”

Kath makes her exit

Kath refuses any help with her bags and storms out of the flat.   Eleri appears quite disinterested.

"I'm going on the run!"

Gwern comes back downstairs at number 9, followed by Dani, who demands where he is going;  “On the run!” he replies, so she threatens to phone the cops,

"Go on, then – I don't care!"

but he does not care.

"I'll support you, Gwern"

She insists that if he confesses, she will support him;  “I don’t want him to turn out like his father!” she angrily shouts at Mark,

"Are you sure it was you?"

who asks Gwern if he is sure that it was him,

Gwern barges his way out

then Gwern pushes past them and leaves the house.

Mark feels the weight of guilt

The guilt is weighing heavily upon Mark.

"What made you change your mind?"

Iolo asks Diane what made her change her mind about the dam;

"What changed?"

“You were fully against it at the start of the meeting and then voted at the last minute to approve planning permission.   What changed?”

Kath has just come in with her luggage;

"Yes, I would like an answer to that"

she would also like an answer to that question.

"I was deceived, like everyone else"

Diane maintains that she was deceived like everyone else;  “I thought that Quantum Hydro Works would save this valley.”

"Flooding the homes of half your friends?"

“Despite the fact they would flood the homes of half your friends?” points out Kath.

"Jobs will keep this valley going"

However, Diane maintains that jobs will keep this valley going, not homes.

"You're starting to sound like Brynmor now . . ."

“Do you know what?   You’re starting to sound like Brynmor now,” Kath sighs,

". . . are you sure he didn't give you a back-hander?"

“Are you sure he didn’t give you a back-hander to change your mind?   I know that’s how these councils work.”

Diane says nothing and wonders if Iolo is going to give her a hand taking the luggage upstairs.

Diane is in rather a 'spot' here

Diane is left pondering her invidious situation.

"This is my fault"

“This is my fault,” says Dani, “I shouldn’t have gone near Jinx.”

"Gwern will be all right"

Mark unconvincingly tells her that Gwern will be all right,

"I was stupid to think he'd changed"

but she goes on, “I was stupid to think he had changed since going to that detention centre.”

Mark proposes to go after him, but she decides that is the job of the police and is about to phone them.

"No, don't do that, Dan"

“No, Dan, don’t do that!” he urges, “He’ll go back to jail.”   Dani does not know what to do and he says he will go and look for Gwern, so she says she will go with him, but he advises her to stay there in case Gwern comes back.

Dani is left with her thoughts

Still burdened with the guilt, Mark leaves the house.

"Are you behind this?"

Eleri comes rushing into Cysgod y Glyn, demanding, “Are you behind this?

"Someone has attacked Jinx!"

Someone has attacked Jinx.”   Brynmor enquires why he would want to attack Jinx;  “Because we both know the truth!”

"There are plenty of people with more reason than me"

He points out, “There were plenty of angry people in the Deri with more of a reason to whack him than me – is he all right?”

Eleri does not know the answer to that, but warns her father that she is going to the hospital;

"I'll give you a lift"

she refuses the offer of a lift, snarling, “I’ll get a taxi – I don’t want you anywhere near him!”

"I expect you to be gone by the time I get back!"

As she is about to leave the flat, she adds, “And I don’t want you near this place, either!   I expect you to be gone by the time I get home!”

Poor old Brynmor has a few problems at present

Things do not appear to be going quite Brynmor’s way at the moment.

Kath sits in the Deri flat . . .

Kath is sitting alone on the sofa in the Deri flat where the sound of music from downstairs can be heard.

. . . in tears

She considers her situation and dissolves into tears.

"Can you remember what happened?"

Dani is at Jinx’s bedside in the hospital;  he tells her, “I wasn’t expecting to see you tonight.”   She assures him that whatever happened between them, she cannot stop worrying.   She enquires whether he can remember what happened.

"I left the Deri . . . and woke up here"

“I remember leaving the Deri . . . and then just waking up here,”

"So you have no idea who did it?"

so he has no idea who did this.

Eleri also turns up

The door opens and Eleri appears, so Dani thinks that she had better leave, although Jinx does not want her to do so.

"Do you know who did this?"

When she has gone, Eleri also asks if he has any idea who did this to him;

"It's something to do with the dam, isn't it?"

he does not, but is quite sure, “It’s something to do with the dam, isn’t it?”

She tries to convince him that it is nothing to do with that, but he responds, “Come on, Eleri – someone obviously wanted revenge because I kept your secrets.”

"That's not fair"

She insists that is not fair,

"Just go away, will you?"

but he simply tells her, “Just go away, will you?” and she does.

"I always get the blame for everything"

At the MFC flat, Gwern informs Britt, “I always get the blame for everything – that’s why I admitted attacking Jinx.”   Britt says that she was exactly the same with Gloria,

"It's important you don't take the same for this"

but it is important that he does not take the blame for this, or they might force him to go back to that centre – and he does not want that.

"What's going on?"

Colin comes in and wants to know what is going on.   “Gwern is going to stay with us for a couple of nights,” Britt informs him

"Dani doesn't care"

and Gwern insists that Dani does not care.

"Go and tell Dani you're staying here"

Britt instructs him, “Go and tell Dani that you’re staying here – you will need to go and get your toothbrush anyway.”   He does as he is told, while Colin stresses to Britt that she needs to be careful not to come between them.

"Someone needs to stand up for the boy!"

“Someone needs to stand up for the boy!” Britt rages,

"This is what you were like with Garry"

but Colin reminds her that this is what she was like with Garry – it was never his fault.

"Dani has accused him of attacking Jinx"

“Dani has just accused him of attacking Jinx,” she snarls.

Colin raises the possibility that Dani might be right;

"Gwern would never so anything like that"

“Have you thought about that?”   Of course, she maintains that Gwern would never do anything like that.

"Are you perfectly sure of that?"

“Are you perfectly sure of that?” Colin wonders, which does makes her stop and think.

Diane has another drink

Diane appears to be trying to drown her sorrows in the Deri when Brynmor comes in and she warns him, “Don’t you go up and see Kath.”

Brynmor is to stay at number 10

He replies that it is none of her business, but he is there to meet Rhys to get the key to number 10, where he is going to be staying for a while.

"Eleri has seen through you, too, has she?"

“Eleri has seen through you, too, has she?” gloats Diane, “Just like I’ve seen through you!   The blackmail – it was you, wasn’t it?”

"Anyone with any sense . . ."

He maintains that anyone with any sense would have realised that months ago.   “You’re not even going to deny it?” she goes on and he wonders what would be the point of that,

"We'll see about that"

as Diane is not going to say a word.   “We’ll see about that,” she answers.

"You've broken the law, Diane"

“You’ve broken the law, Diane – and that’s not the best way for a councillor to behave.

"I'm not the one who will lose their job"

“So if a word of this comes out, I’m not the one who will lose my job, am I?”

"Red wine, please"

With that, Brynmor turns and orders a red wine from the barman, while Diane strides angrily out.

Dani has been chatting to Gwern . . .

Dani is sitting with Gwern when Mark comes back, pleased to see that he is there.

. . . who goes back to Britt

Dani tells Gwern to go back to Britt, then tells Mark that they need to talk.

"Why did you have blood on your hands?"

“Why did you have blood on your hands earlier?” she wants to know

"It was that gate"

and he repeats the story about the gate.

"It was you, wasn't it?"

“It was you, wasn’t it?” she continues and can tell from his expression that she is right.

"You were going to let Gwern take the blame!"

“You were going to let Gwern take the blame!” she shouts, “I almost called the cops!   I thought we were like family,” and he insists that they are.

"I was just so angry with Jinx!"

“Look, I was just so angry with Jinx for what he did to you!”   Dani replies that does not justify what he did.

"You're not going to call the cops?"

He whines, “You’re not going to call the cops?”   She reminds him that is what she was going to do with Gwern.   “But shouldn’t we wait to see how Jinx is first?”

"Jinx is fine"

She confirms that Jinx is fine, as she went to see him.

"Now we don't have to call the police"

"This comes as a relief to Mark, who maintains that now they do not have to call the police.

"I'm not going to call them – you're going to confess"

After a pause, she announces that she is not going to call the police – for which he is very grateful.   But then she adds, “You have to do it – and confess.”

Mark is speechless

This comes as a great shock to him.
