7 June 2022

Dani is transfixed . . .

As Dani stares dumbfounded at the scene confronting her,

. . . by the scene before her

with the flames in the chip shop roaring and crackling, Eifion comes along the street

"Britt wanted to save a photo of Brandon!"

and she tells him, “Britt was in there!   She wanted to save a photo of Brandon!”

"A photo?"

Eifion cannot believe it;  “A photo?” and demands if she has called the Fire Brigade;  people are watching from further along the street.   Dani looks blankly at him, so he shouts, “Quickly – and an ambulance!”

Aaron is at the window of the flat

As he approaches the door of the chip shop, he can see Aaron at an upstairs window

"Aaron, come down now!"

and yells at him to come down now.

Eifion enters the burning building

Then Eifion takes off his jacket, putting it over his head and goes into the burning shop, to try and locate Britt.

He finds Britt on the floor . . .

He finds her on the floor behind the fryers and shouts to her.

. . . then is injured in his right arm

Then something explodes and he feels a sharp pain in his right arm;

He manages to drag Britt from the shop

nevertheless he grabs Britt and begins to drag her from the shop, as more debris falls from the ceiling.

:How are you, Jinx?"

In Cysgod y Glyn, Cai takes a seat and asks Jinx how he is;

"Why are you here?"

all that Jinx wants to know is why he is there.

"Interview for the deputy head's job"

“I’m here for an interview for the deputy head’s job,” is the reply, and Ffion remarks that he has come down early.

"So you're moving to the village?"

Jinx does not like the idea that Cai is moving to the village to live, but it is pointed out that he has not got the job yet.

"Why have you come down early?"

 “Why have you come down early, then?” Ffion demands.

“I was hoping to go over some aspects of the job with someone experienced,” says Cai, and Jinx takes this as his cue to leave, although Ffion pleads with him not to go.

"This is between the two of you"

He maintains that it is between the two of them and leaves the flat.

"That strop was worse than Lleucu's"

Cai casually comments that strop was a lot worse than Lleucu’s, and he looks at Ffion with what might be construed as a ‘leer’.

Britt has been rescued by Eifion . . .

Iolo comes round the corner by the bus stop to see Eifion, who has by now dragged Britt from the blazing shop, collapse beside her in the middle of the road.

. . . and Iolo rushes toward them

He runs towards them, and by this time Aaron has come downstairs and is concerned about his mother.

Aaron has escaped

Various people have now come out, including Jinx, and the ambulance is on the way;  Mathew is worried to see that his cousin appears to be unconscious and Iolo is anxious that Eifion should say something.

The ambulance arrives . . .

The sound of an ambulance siren is approaching and it comes around the corner;

. . . and the fire brigade are at work

a fire appliance has arrived at the other end of the street and hoses are being deployed.   The sporadic sound of breaking glass can be heard.

"You turn up here without warning"

In the comparative calm of Cysgod y Glyn, Ffion is surprised that Cai is happy to come to Cwmderi without warning

"I've not got anything to hide"

and he maintains that he has nothing to hide;  “I’m here for an innocent reason involving work.”

"Don't think you can stay here!"

She warns him not to think that he can stay there, and he announces that he is staying at Y Felin with Siôn.

"What are my chances, then?"

“What are my chances, then?” he asks, and she wonders in what context he is asking.   “Well, the job, of course,” he replies, “You are going to support me, aren’t you?”

"You're exactly what the school is looking for"

Ffion answers, guardedly, “You’re exactly the sort of deputy head the school is looking for,” and he presumptuously leans forward to kiss her,

"No – Arwen is in her room!"

but she stops him, pointing out that Arwen is in her room.   “If she wasn’t, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, would we?”

Dani is watching from the window of the flat . . .

Dani has returned to the Deri flat, from the window of which she is watching the proceedings;

. . . and is extremely shocked

she is still in a state of extreme shock.

Siôn welcomes his brother-in-law

Cai arrives at Y Felin and is welcomed by Siôn;

"You can tell me about this latest girlfriend . . ."

“It’s a good chance to tell me about this latest girlfriend,” he tells Siôn, “You kept her quiet!”   Siôn says that there is no need to discuss that now.

". . . I heard she was 20"

“You’re not getting out of it that easily – I heard she was 20 – what’s the secret?” Cai goes on, but Siôn is eager to change the subject, asking how Nesta and the kids are, and whether they are excited about the possibility of moving back to Cwmderi.

"It will be nice for them to get to know Arwen better"

“It will be nice for them and Arwen to get to know each other better,” says Cai,

"You sound confident"

and Siôn comments that he sounds confident he will get the job.   “It will be strange, not being at home with the kids all day – and I haven’t worked full-time for over five years.”

"Have you heard about the fire in the chip shop?"

Iolo comes in, looking very shaken;  “Have you heard about the fire in the chip shop?” he asks, “Britt and Eifion were caught in it – they’re both in hospital.

"Neither of them looked too good"

“Mathew is with Eifion – but neither he nor Britt looked too good!”

"Why aren't they telling us anything?"

In the hospital waiting room Mathew, Aaron and Colin are sitting impatiently;  “Why aren’t they telling us anything” Mathew demands, and Colin advises that he should try to be patient, as the doctors and nurses are working hard,

"I've had enough of this"

but Mathew has had enough and walks out of the room.

"Are you OK, boy?"

Colin asks Aaron if he is OK;

"This is my fault"

he shakes his head and mutters, “This is my fault – someone out there wants revenge after that Fascism business.

"I was supposed to be caught in that – not Mam!"

“I was supposed to be caught in the fire – not Mam.”

Some nice bacon for breakfast

Next morning at Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx is cooking breakfast and Ffion did not hear him come back last night.   “You must have been too busy!” is the terse reply,

"Does Cai want breakfast?"

“Does Cai want breakfast?”

"He left almost straight after you"

He is informed that Cai left almost straight after him,

"Oh – just a quickie, was it?"

and Jinx comments, “A quickie, then?”

She snarls at him to grow up,

"You didn't tele he had applied for that job"

and he continues, “You didn’t tell me he was interviewing for that job.”

"It was confidential, Jinx"

She answers that she could not as it is confidential and that she has to be impartial.

“Just stay away from him, Ffion,” he cautions her, but she will not be told what to do.

"He can't be trusted, you know that"

“He can’t be trusted, you know that,” Jinx goes on, and she deduces that he is jealous.   “Like you were jealous of Jaclyn, yeah?” he says, and when she denies that she was jealous, he adds, “Well, I’m not jealous either!”

Ffion says in that case they do not have a problem;

"You concentrate on Jaclyn and leave Cai to me"

“You concentrate on Jaclyn and leave Cai to me,” as she pours out her coffee.

Aaron has fallen asleep

Aaron is asleep on the sofa in the waiting room;

"No more news"

Colin wakens him, but only to advise that there is no news.   “You know what you said last night,” Colin begins, “It hasn’t been proven that it was arson.

"Is there something you're not telling me?"

“Have you got evidence?   Something you’re not telling me?”

"I just know – OK, Col?"

 Aaron maintains that he just knows.

“You can’t go round saying things like that without any proof –

"You're being paranoid"

“you’re being paranoid,” Colin tells him.

"I've got dangerous enemies out there!"

Aaron insists that he has dangerous enemies out there.

"Eifion is better than they feared"

At that moment Mathew returns with the good news that Eifion is better than they had feared;  “Well – his lungs –

"The top of his arm is a bit of a mess"

“the top of his arm is a bit of a mess, but it will get better with time.   They’re happy to discharge him now.”

"Did they say anything about Britt?"

Colin is anxious whether they said anything about Britt, but Mathew cannot enlighten him.

Hywel looks at the damage . . .

Outside the smoke-blackened chip shop, Hywel Llywelyn stands, surveying it

. . . and Megan joins him

and Megan joins him;  “Awful, isn’t it?” she comments, “Have you heard any more about Britt and Eifion?

"I'm praying for them"

“It’s so sad – I’m praying for them.”

Then she gets to what she really wanted to see Hywel about;

She has heard rumours about the chapel in Cwrtmynach

“I’m very worried about Bethania – I’ve heard rumours that they’re going to turn Seilo Chapel in Cwrtmynach into luxury flats – and on top of that, they’re going to turn the cemetery into a car park for them.   Have you heard anything like it?”

"Planning permission won't be granted"

Hywel replies, “Well, yes, as it happens, but the planning permission hasn’t been approved yet – and between you and me, it won’t be.

"How can you be so sure?"

Megan wonders how he can be so sure.

"I'm the chairman of the planning committee"

“I’ll make sure it isn’t!   I’m the chairman of the planning committee.”

He wonders what this has to do with Bethania and Megan is worrying, “If it can happen to Seilo, it can happen to Bethania,” but he accuses her of scaremongering now.   She points out that the chapel is short of money, the roof is leaking, the central heating is faulty –

"Some shark will see an opportunity"

some shark will see an opportunity.

Hywel emphasises that is not going to happen,

"Why don't you ask in Tomos ac Ellis?"

adding, “If you’re still worried, go into Tomos ac Ellis and ask if anyone has shown an interest in Bethania – I doubt it.”

Megan intends to do just that

Megan regards that as a good idea and is about to go into the estate agent’s shop.

"I'm taking Eifion home now"

Still in the waiting room, the atmosphere is becoming tense when Mathew comes in to wish them good luck and to tell them he is taking Eifion home now.

"Did he say anything about how it started?"

Colin wonders if he said anything about how the fire started.

"She was trying to save a photo of Brandon"

“The only thing he said is that Britt ran back in to try and save a photo of Brandon,” which Colin finds very strange.

"I've had enough of waiting here!"

“I’ve had enough of waiting here!” growls Colin, and is going to find a doctor, but Aaron will not accompany him;

Aaron is doing some thinking

he simply sits there, pondering over what he has just heard.

Megan finds Rhys in the Deri

Megan comes into the Deri, where Rhys has been brought a cup of coffee by Geraint.

"Have Tomos ac Ellis had any enquiries about Bethania?"

She asks, “Have Tomos ac Ellis received any enquiries about Bethania?”   He confirms that they have not, but is interested in finding out why she is asking.

"That application to develop Seilo Chapel"

“Well, it seems that Tomos ac Ellis know about the application to develop Seilo Chapel in Cwrtmynach,” she explains, “It worries me that the same thing could happen to Bethania.”

"I'm glad you've given me some peace of mind"

She is glad that he has been able to give her some peace of mind,

Megan leaves the Deri again

and she leaves the Deri in a much better humour.

A plan is developing in Rhys' mind

This encounter has given Rhys something to think about.

Dani is speaking to Colin

Dani is speaking on the phone when Tyler comes into the Deri flat;  she enlightens him that Colin has just told her Britt is going to be OK.

"Eifion is going to be all right"

“They’re keeping her in as a precaution – and Eifion is going to be all right as well, thank goodness.

"Fair play to him for what he did last night"

“Tyler, I know you don’t like Eifion, OK, but fair play to him for what he did last night.”

"Anyone would have done the same"

Tyler argues that anyone would have done the same in that situation;  she informs him, “I was there just before Eifion, and I couldn’t do what he did –

"If it wasn't for Eifion Britt wouldn't be here now"

“so I’m sorry to spoil your theory, but if it wasn’t for Eifion, Britt wouldn’t be here now!”

Rhys is videoing Bethania

Rhys is standing in front of Bethania, recording a video with his tablet;

"What are you doing, Rhys?"

Megan is interested to know what he is doing.

"You put the idea into my head"

“To be honest, you put the idea into my head – this building could interest developers, like the chapel in Cwrtmynach,” he tells her

"What they're doing there is disgraceful"

Megan describes what is happening there as disgraceful, and that is why she wants to make sure the same thing does not happen in Cwmderi.   “I trusted you, Rhys,” she protests.

"No-one said anything about the chapel in Cwrtmynach"

He wonders what all the fuss is about;  “No-one said anything about the chapel in Cwrtmynach when it was sold a few months ago.

"Old buildings have to be in use, Megan"

“If people want to keep old buildings, they have to be in use – otherwise we might as well turn them into cash.   There’s nothing to worry about, Megan – instead of spending a fortune on maintaining the place,

"The chapel could buy a smaller building"

“the chapel could receive a sum to buy a smaller modern building.   Everyone will be happy then.”

"Of course you're going to stay here"

As Mathew escorts Eifion into the café flat, he is insisting that he can stay there, so he can be looked after;

"You're a hero, Eifion"

“You’re a hero and I’m very proud of you.”

Eifion consents to staying there for a couple of nights, but will be off as soon as he feels better,

"I'm not sharing with someone who thinks I'm a thief!"

adding, “I’m not sharing a flat with someone who thinks I’m a thief!”   Mathew regards all that as water under the bridge and will get his cousin a ham sandwich.   “Yeah, go on, then – but not too much mustard –

"I don't like things too hot!"

“I don’t like things too hot!” Eifion jokes.

Aaron is still sitting there, thinking

Aaron is still sitting alone in the waiting room

"She can come home tomorrow"

when Colin returns to inform him, “Your Mam is awake, and they’ve confirmed that she can come home tomorrow, as long as she has a comfortable night – and Gaynor has said we can stay at Llwyncelyn tonight.   We can’t go back to the flat until the fire service allows it.

"Let's try to make life as easy as possible"

“Look, Aaron, I realise that things haven’t been great between us lately, but please, can we try to make life as easy as possible over the next few days — for your mother?

"Do you want to see her?"

“Do you want to see her?   She’s been asking about you.”

"She decided to save a photo of Uncle Brandon before me . . ."

“Has she now?” says Aaron, rather disinterested, “Dad, I was in the flat above – I could have been killed – and she decided to save a photo of Uncle Brandon before saving me –

". . . so no, I don't want to see her!"

“so no, I don’t want to see her.”
