Jinx practises for his TV debut

Jinx is sitting in Cysgod y Glyn, strumming his guitar and singing the words, “I love you,” as he reaches the end of the song he is practising for ‘Heno’ this evening on S4C.

"It's an honour to be here today"

“Thank you very much – it’s an honour to be here today to perform for you, Angharad Mair,” he continues, and seems pleased with his song.

"Aaron's so good, you know"

In the chip shop flat, Britt is telling Colin, “Aaron’s so good, you know – he understood the fryers straightaway.”   Colin replies that it must be in the blood, and Britt intends to teach him about the suppliers next.

"Why didn't you wake me?"

Aaron comes rushing in, protesting, “Why didn’t you wake me?” but his mother says that he has plenty of time to get to school.

"I wanted to revise for the maths test!"

“No, I wanted to revise for the maths test!” he complains.   She wonders why he is so worried about a little test,

"I'll get you some breakfast"

but he is in such a hurry that he does not bother with breakfast, and leaves the flat.

Rhys brings in some old college books

In the bookshop, Tesni is sorting some books when Rhys comes in;  “I saw the thing on Instagram about Y Winllan Werdd [The Green Vineyard] – I’ve got a couple of old college books if you want them.”

Jinx is on the phone outside

We can see that Jinx is outside, talking on the phone, when Rhys notices a secondhand magazine on the table;  “I’ve been meaning to read this,” he tells Tesni, who invites him to put a contribution in the tin.

Jinx comes in, still on the phone, asking someone to give Arwen her tea, as he is going to Llanelli;

"I'm performing a song on 'Heno'"

“I’m performing a song on ‘Heno’ – that’s great, thank you very much.”

Rhys leaves in a hurry

Rhys seems to be in great haste to leave the shop.

Tesni is impressed that Jinx is appearing on television, and he admits to being rather nervous;

"Do you want my autograph now?"

“Do you want my autograph now, before people start queueing?” he asks her,

Tesni laughs

and she laughs.

Rhys relates what he heard to Mathew

Mathew is sweeping up outside APD as Rhys approaches, grinning broadly;  “I just heard Jinx saying that he’s going to be on ‘Heno’ tonight –

"We can't actually let him go, can we?"

“but we can’t actually let him go, can we?”

Mathew agrees to send him an e-mail saying something has happened and that they have had to cancel;

"I'll send him an e-mail later"

“I’ll send it from the fake address they created – I’ll do it later – I’m busy at the moment.”

Eifion is called into the chip shop

Britt happens to see Eifion passing the chip shop and calls to him;  she is thinking of developing Y Sosban Chips and making a couple of positive changes;

"Going more in the organic direction"

“Going more in the organic and local produce direction – do you grow potatoes?”

"Oh yes, they're organic, Britt!"

He replies that they do at Deri Fawr and lies that they are organic.

"I'll take the wonky ones off your hands"

She points out that she is not going to pay a fortune, but will take the wonky ones off him;  “You know, the ones you can’t sell to other people – why don’t we start with one sack and see how we go – see if the customers like them, then we can discuss it again.   But I’m serious about the price, Eifion.”

"I'm sure we can work something out"

He is sure they can work something out.

"I think it's a brill idea!"

Kelly is taking advantage of the bookshop’s new direction;  “I think it’s a brill idea!” she says,

"Your article was very powerful . . ."

but then Siôn returns from the conference.   He says that he read her article, which he describes as very powerful,

". . . it couldn't have been easy to write"

and realises that it could not have been easy for her to write it.

"No, it wasn't"

She seems eager to leave the shop.

"What's been going on here, then?"

Siôn asks Tesni, “Well, what’s been going on here, then?”

"I've taken up your challenge"

She replies that she has taken up his challenge, creating part of the business that is more sustainable, and he likes the name, ‘Y Winllan Werdd’ [The Green Vineyard].

“People bring in old books in and others take them – they make a contribution and the money goes to a tree planting charity – we’ve got more than £50 to send to them already,” she announces,

"Fewer trees get cut down"

“Fewer trees get cut down, and it raises money to plant more – simple.”

"How's that going to pay the bills?"

Siôn does not regard it as that simple;  “How’s that going to pay the bills in this place and our wages?” he demands, “And a lot of these are English books!”   She explains that he has a responsibility to reduce the harm his business is doing to the environment.

"I have a responsibility to promote Welsh books"

He counters with, “I have a responsibility to promote Welsh books – no-one’s going to buy new books if they can get old ones cheaper!”

"I've never seen the place so busy"

Tesni is adamant that ‘Y Winllan Werdd’ brings people into the shop;  “I’ve never see the place so busy!   It’s going to be a success – I promise.”

"Come upstairs with me, Mr White"

Then her mood changes as she cajoles him, “Now come upstairs with me, Mr White – I’ve missed you!”

He looks rather apprehensive . . .

He needs no second bidding,

. . . but nevertheless closes the shop

but changes the shop sign to ‘closed’ and follows her upstairs.

Kelly has a visitor

Tyler pays a visit to Bryntirion to see Kelly;

"That article was powerful!"

“That article you wrote – it was powerful!”

"The things I've done in the past with Aled"

As he sits down he continues, “It’s really made me think, you know,” and she says that was the whole point.   “About the things I’ve done in the past with Aled.”

"I'm a journalist, not a therapist"

Kelly points out that she is a journalist, not a therapist, so she does not know how she can help,

"How did it make you feel?"

and he asks, “How did it make you feel when you got it all out?”

"Horrible"

She replies that she felt horrible, but the reaction has been mostly positive, so now she guesses that she is glad.

"I took advantage of him"

Tyler has that haunted look as he says, “I was his teacher – and I took advantage of him.”

"And you were punished in court"

Kelly reminds him that he was punished in court,

"But I never said sorry to him!"

“But I’ve never said sorry to him!” Tyler adds, and she wonders whether it would have changed anything.

"What I did was not OK"

“Isn’t it important that Aled knows that what I did was not OK and I realise that now?” he snarls.

"It's important that you know that now"

She agrees that it is important that he knows that now.

"Would it have helped if you father admitted it?"

“Would it have helped you if your father admitted that what he’d done was wrong?” Tyler demands.

Kelly does not know the answer to that,

"It takes guts to admit you're wrong"

but she does know, “It takes guts to admit you’re wrong.”   He thanks her, but she protests that she has not done anything;  he is quite adamant that she has.

The bookshop is uncommonly busy today

Colin comes into the bookshop with some books for ‘Y Winllan Werdd’ for which Tesni is grateful;  as he puts them down, he notices the books brought in by Rhys,

"These would be useful for Aaron"

which he thinks would be very useful for Aaron, to help him with his exams.

“That’s one thing I don’t miss about school – the stress of exams,” she sympathises,

"How did you cope with the stress?"

and Colin wonders how she coped with it.

"I tried to get a good night's sleep"

“Plenty of revision – I prepared as much as I could, and, well, tried to get a good night’s sleep the night before,” she answers.

He puts some money in the tin,

"I'll take a couple of those fancy pens"

and will also take a couple of those fancy pens on the counter, and a notebook as well.   She recalls that one thing that she liked when she was revising was coloured pens, so he agrees to have some of those too.

Another barman in the Deri?

Rhys comes into the Deri and orders a pint from the total stranger behind the bar.   He notices Gaynor, who is studying her laptop, and asks if she is looking at anything interesting.

"I've been doing a bit of research"

“Actually, I’ve been doing a bit of research – but it’s late, and I’d better go,” she says.

"I'm knackered, Rhys!"

Rhys sits down with his drink just as Mathew arrives, complaining that he is knackered after a really busy day.

"All that work – and writing an e-mail?"

“All that building work – and writing an e-mail, is it?” teases Rhys.   Mathew wants to know what e-mail he is talking about.   “The one to tell Jinx not to go to the ‘Heno’ studio,” Rhys points out,

"I forgot all about that!"

and Mathew admits that he has forgotten all about it.

At Deri Fawr . . .

At Deri Fawr, Eifion is in one of the sheds, applying earth to some commercial potatoes,

. . . Eifion is pulling another scam

to make them look newly-dug,

Rather labour-intensive way of making a couple of quid

then putting them in a bag clearly marked ‘organic’.

Tesni stresses to Siôn, “You see – almost everyone who came here today bought something else.”   He draws her attention to one of the receipts which is only for a Biro and a birthday card.

"We haven't taken this much since the first day"

“We haven’t taken this much since the first day we opened,” she insists, “So you see – it is possible to do everything!”

"Beginner's luck"

Siôn simply puts it down to beginners luck,

"You won't admit that it's a good idea!"

but she angrily replies, “No it’s not – you just won’t admit that it’s a good idea!   There are no losses – we’ve made a profit!”

"I could hear you outside"

Iolo comes into the shop, asking what is going on, as he could hear the arguing outside;

"We were discussing a book"

his father says they were discussing a book.

"I'm going home!"

Tesni picks up her handbag and goes home,

"A book, was it?"

which leads Iolo to the conclusion that it was not about a book.

"I wasn't sure about one question"

Colin is pleased to hear that Aaron answered every question on the paper;  “I wasn’t sure about one question, but I gave it a go,” Aaron admits.

"We;ll go through the questions later"

He is told to look at the books which Colin found for him, and they will go through the questions together later.

This is overruled by Britt;  “No – he’s got a shift downstairs now,”

"The boy deserves a night off, Britt"

but Colin insists that Aaron deserves a night off – he needs to find a balance between work and school.   The buzzer sounds, and Eifion comes upstairs,

"He has to learn the business!"

as Britt berates Colin, “You’re spoiling him with new books for doing a little test?   He has to learn the business!”

"There's a sack of potatoes downstairs"

Eifion announces that there is a sack of potatoes downstairs;  “They’ll need a good scrub.”

"That will be a little job for Aaron tonight"

Britt says that will be a little job for Aaron tonight.   “Let me know if the customers like them,” Eifion adds.

"She's fiery – passionate!"

Siôn is explaining his situation to Iolo;  “But that’s how she is – she’s fiery – passionate!”

"Some couples enjoy arguing"

Iolo comments that some couples just enjoy arguing, and his father has never understood that;  “If anything, I’ve always avoided confrontation –

"But with Tesni . . ."

“but with Tesni . . .”

Iolo says they are bound to argue about some things;  “Especially considering the age difference.”

Siôn confesses that the fighting wakes something inside him;

"Don't talk to me about biting!"

“She pushes me and . . . don’t talk to me about biting!   That’s something else – I’ve never met anyone like her – she’s wild!   We’re like two wild animals!”

This is too much information for Iolo

Iolo has had quite enough of this by now and tells his father, “Right, you don’t want to talk to me about your sex life.”

"Nothing wrong with having an open conversation"

Siôn maintains there is nothing wrong with having an open conversation about sex, and needs the honest advice of his son.

"I don't know anything about sleeping with girls"

“I don’t know anything about sleeping with girls,” he emphasises, but Siôn says he must have experienced something similar with Tyler.   The thing is that Tesni is so spontaneous,

"I'm not a young man any more, Iolo . . . "

and he is not a young man any more;

". . . what if I'm not enough for Tesni?"

he fears that he is not enough for Tesni.

"She's playing with your head, Dad"

Iolo reminds him that he does everything for her;  “She’s got a place to live, a servant, and she’s playing with your head.”   He makes it crystal clear, “Dad, she’s lazy, she doesn’t tidy up, she leaves dirty clothes and dishes all around the house –

"But you know what?   As long as the sex is good!"

“but you know what, Dad?   As long as the sex is good!”

"I'm going to get some therapy"

As he leaves the shop, he tells his father, “I’m going to get some therapy after what we’ve just been discussing!”

Gaynor is doing investment research . . .

Hywel has put Esther to bed and she is now listening to a book;  Gaynor is still studying the laptop.   “I’m doing some research into how I can invest my money,” she advises,

. . . which pleases Hywel

which he finds reassuring.

"What do you know about cryptocurrencies?"

“What do you know about cryptocurrencies?” she asks,

"Steer well clear of them!"

and he warns her to steer well clear of them.   “It’s virtual money, isn’t it?” she adds, and he points out that there is no bank to control it.   “Which is an advantage for the investor,” she alleges, “That’s how someone makes a lot of money.”

He describes it as gambling,

"Every investment is a gamble"

but she points out that every investment is a gamble;

"This takes it to another level"

he is of the opinion that this takes gambling to another level.   “Well I’ve read several articles and done a lot of research,” she goes on.

“That’s just marketing to get you to give them your money,” he cautions, but she has decided that is what she is going to do –

"Not all of it, but perhaps £5,000"

not all of it, but perhaps about £5,000, to see how it goes.

He cannot believe that she is serious;  “I’m going to keep an eye on it, and I’m going to learn when to sell and when to buy,” she insists.

"Investing in handbags would be a better idea . . ."

He considers that investing in handbags would be a better idea than throwing money at that rubbish;

". . . but there we go – it's your money"

“But there we go – it’s your money.”

Mathew and Rhys are chatting

As Mathew and Rhys sit chatting in the Deri,

Jinx comes in

Jinx walks in, carrying his guitar and looking rather deflated.   “You’ve got a gig, have you?” Rhys asks, “Or did you just fancy carrying the guitar around?”

"They've never heard of me"

Jinx points out that things are definitely not all right;  “I got an e-mail from Angharad Mair, asking me to perform one of my songs on ‘Heno’.   I went over to the studio and nobody – including Angharad Mair – had ever heard of me.”

Rhys snorts with laughter

Rhys cannot contain his laughter,

"Why do you find it so funny?"

and Jinx wonders why he found the situation so funny.

"It was our fault – we sent that e-mail"

Mathew admits that it was his fault;  “Well, our fault – we sent you that e-mail.”   Rhys adds that they created a false account, and left a couple of comments about the video.

"And why would you do that?"

Jinx is at a loss to know why they would do that;

"I forgot to cancel it"

Mathew reveals that he was supposed to send another e-mail, saying that it had been cancelled, but he forgot.

"It was just a little joke"

He maintains that he is really sorry, and Rhys says that it was just a little joke.

"That's what I am to you – a joke?"

“Oh – that’s what I am to you, is it?   A joke?” Jinx groans,

"You've got to see the funny side!"

and he is urged to see the funny side.

"Funny?   What you did was really cruel!"

“Funny?   What you did was really cruel!” he says as he walks out of the pub.   Rhys still cannot stop laughing,

Mathew is not laughing

but Mathew does not share his amusement.

"I've run you a bath, Iol"

Tyler comes downstairs at number 7, and tells Iolo, “I’ve run a bath for you – you look a bit stressed.”

"Traumatised, rather than stressed!"

Iolo describes his condition as traumatised, rather than stressed, thanks to his father, but agrees that a bath is a good idea.

Tyler contacts Aled

As soon as he has gone upstairs, Tyler takes out his phone and contacts  Aled;

"I really need to discuss something with you"

“I really need to discuss something with you – are you free tomorrow at all?   OK.”
