"Why do I have to do this?"

In the bookshop, Siôn complains, “Why do I have to do this?” as he sorts through a box of donated books.   Tesni replies that it is because she will be very grateful, 

He comes across something interesting

but then he comes across an amazing discovery;  

"It's a first edition!"

“No!” he exclaims, “It’s a first edition – and in pristine condition – of ‘Oriau’r Hwyr’! [Late Hours]   Tesni looks at him blankly, and he informs her, “It’s Ceiriog’s first collection – 

"The 'Welsh Robert Burns', according to some"

“the ‘Welsh Robert Burns’, according to some.   Myfanwy Fychan of Castell Dinas Bran!”   Although all this means nothing to her, she says that he can keep the book if he wants, but should remember to put something in the collection box.   

He puts £10 in the tin . . . 

He does so, quite willingly, and shows her a £10 note;  she points out that he could buy a new book for that, 

. . . and does another bit of book-sniffing

but he sniffs the book appreciatively, and appears very happy with his find.

Garry appears to have nothing to do . . .

Garry is sitting in the sparsely furnished office of the garage and puts his feet up on a chair;  

. . . except to read Cwm Ni . . .

to pass the time, he picks up the latest edition of ‘Cwm Ni’, the village newsletter, where he notices an article entitled ‘Dog thefts on the rise’.

. . . which gives him an idea

This gives him an idea, and, taking his phone, he gives Mark a call;  

"How would you like to make some money"

“Listen, how would you like to make some money?”

Howard approaches Eifion 

Eifion has just emerged from the chip shop and is putting the payment for the potatoes in his wallet when Howard approaches;  

“You’ve got a finger in all the pies, haven’t you?” he says.   Eifion beckons him to come round the corner, because he wants a word.

"I'm not going to start interfering . . ."

He takes out the dog collar and assures Howard, “I’m not going to start interfering,” 

"You already have if you've got that collar!"

but is told that he is already interfering if he has that collar.   “The thing is, I want that dog back – it’s not for me, it’s for a friend.   Come on, Fflam can’t be of value to you – he’s too old to breed.”

"We're arranging the odd little bout"

Howard informs him, “We’re not breeding dogs – we’re arranging the odd little bout.”   

"Fflam is frightened of everything"

Eifion is horrified at the suggestion of fighting, protesting that Fflam would be useless, as he is frightened of everything.

"Practice for the dogs that will fight"

“I know,” Howard replies, “He helped me out with a bit of practice for the dogs that will fight – like any other sport, they have to train – and you’re right, he was much too soft!”   

"I'll report you!"

Realising that Fflam is dead, Eifion threatens to report Howard, 

"I pay you to keep quiet"

but is reminded, “No you can’t, because I pay you to keep quiet.”   He turns and walks away, leaving Eifion extremely upset

"It's just a bit of lunch"

Aled has gone to a lot of trouble for this meeting with Tyler, having laid the table.   He assures Tyler that it is just a bit of lunch;  “Are you going to sit down, or what?”

"I want to discuss something with you"

“I need to discuss something with you,” Tyler says ominously, but Aled is more interested in whether he would prefer red or white wine.

Jinx listens to his song 'Blodeuwedd' . . .

Jinx is sitting dejectedly in Cysgod y Glyn and listens to his song ‘Blodeuwedd’ on the laptop;  “Hey, Blodeuwedd, you’re all smiles.”   

. . . then closes the laptop

Abruptly he closes the laptop and makes a phone call, leaving a message;  “Ffion, can you phone me back when you get this message, please?   I want to talk – I feel like . . . 

"I think it's time I left the village"

“well, I think it’s time I moved on and left the village.”   

That 'joke' has really affected him

He is at a very low ebb.

"Eifion, one of your sheep is on our land"

At Penrhewl, Eileen is also making a phone call to Eifion, warning him that one of his sheep has strayed onto their land.   

"I'm in the village at the moment"

He receives the call in the Deri, and says he will sort out the matter when he gets back.   She detects that he is not all right, 

He looks anxiously at the collar . . . 

although he insists that he is, as he looks at the collar.

She is worried that she has upset him and wants to apologise;  “I know you had nothing to do with Fflam’s disappearance.   Sorry, I’ve been under a lot of strain recently.”   

. . . and has a stiff drink

He tells her not to worry and he will sort out the sheep.

Tyler seems to be off his food

At number 7, Aled asks about the window cleaning business with Mark, but Tyler is not eating anything;  “I came here to talk to you,” he says.    

"But you haven't said a word"

Aled notices he has not said a word about it.   

"I've been thinking a lot about our relationship"

“I’ve been thinking a lot recently about our relationship – it’s hard not to at the moment.”   

Aled assumes that things between him and Iolo are not so good, but Tyler replies that things are great;  

"Our relationship was a mistake, Aled"

“Our relationship was a mistake, Aled.”

"And you want to hurt me again?"

“You want me to think there’s a chance, so you can hurt me again?” Aled demands, but is told to simply listen.

"I sexually abused you – and I'm sorry!"

“I sexually abused you – and I’m sorry!” says Tyler and Aled is speechless;  “I knew you had a crush on me – but I was your teacher – I didn’t do anything to stop it,” he continues, 

"But you wanted it to continue"

and Aled was under the impression that he wanted it to continue.   

"I fooled myself into thinking that"

“No, I didn’t – I fooled myself into thinking that for months to justify what I did.   I was at fault!”

"I wanted to, you wanted to – no problem"

“Right – I wanted to, you wanted to – so there’s no problem,” insists Aled, but Tyler answers that just because a part of him wanted to, that does not mean . . .   He wonders if Aled has read Kelly’s article, and it appears that he is one of the few in the village who has not.

"People like me taking advantage"

“It’s about people like me taking advantage of people like you – young, under the influence of someone older, with power over them.   I should have known better – I’m sorry!”

"Are you apologising for the happiest period in my life?"

“Are you apologising for the happiest period of my life, or for falling in love with me?” asks Aled.

"I was never in love with you!"

Tyler shouts, “How many times do I have to tell you   I was never in love with you!   I was trying to prove that there was more to it – that we were supposed to be together – but I’m supposed to be with Iol!   And if I’m completely honest with myself, I always knew that I was using you.”

"Making yourself feel better, are you?"

Aled wonders why he is being told this now;  “Getting everything off your chest, but what do I do with it all?   Or have you come here just to make yourself feel better?”   

"It's important you know the truth"

Tyler is adamant that it is important Aled knows the truth.

"The truth is you used me!"

“No, the truth for me is that you used me!   That everything I thought was so real was a lie!   Everything I felt, everything we went through – it was all lies!   

"But as long as you feel better"

“But no, there we are – as long as you feel better – you knew when you came here today that you were going to hurt me.   

"Thinking of no-one but yourself – again"

“And once again, you haven’t thought of anyone but yourself, have you?”

"I think I'd better go"

Tyler looks very crestfallen and thinks that he had better go.  “Yeah, typical – you go!” Aled shouts after him as he leaves the house.

Jinx has visitors . . .

The buzzer sounds at Cysgod y Glyn, and Jinx lets in Rhys and Mathew, who are in apologetic mood.   

. . . who admit that things went too far

“You want to make fun of me again?” asks Jinx, and Rhys says that things went too far.

"That song meant a lot to me"

“You didn’t like the song – fine – I can understand that, but it meant a lot to me, OK?”   

"Was Blodeuwedd a real person?"

Rhys enquires if Blodeuwedd was a real person, and Jinx confirms that she was.   Mathew proposes buying him a drink, and he can tell them who she was, and why she was so special to him.

"It was Izzy"

“It was Izzy,” Jinx says, and Rhys comments that the emotion of the song was obvious.   

"You think the song's terrible"

“You’ve made it perfectly obvious that you think the song’s terrible,” Jinx goes on.

"When did you write it?"

Mathew cannot believe that the song is about Izzy, and wonders when he wrote it;  “Just after we split up,” is the reply,” And at the time she was Blodeuwedd to me.   I’ve been thinking about her quite a lot recently, obviously.”

"Come for a drink . . ."

Mathew is very moved by this, suggesting that they could go for a drink, 

". . . and we can talk about Izzy"

and they can talk about Izzy.   

"I have to pick Arwen up from school"

Jinx is unable to do that as he has to go and pick up Arwen from school.   Mathew and Rhys leave the flat, and Jinx is still thinking about Izzy.

Aled takes in the enormity of what he has heard

Aled sits alone at the table in number 7 with a glass of wine;  he is thinking about his situation, takes a deep breath and another drink from his glass.

"Little Tedi is everything to Dani"

In the garage, Mark says that Dani loves that dog;  “Yeah, exactly – little Tedi is everything to Dani.”   

"No, I can't do that, Gar"

Mark comes to the conclusion that he cannot do it, 

"Nobody will know it was you"

but is assured, “Nobody will know it was you.”

Mark replies that he will know, and it is pointed out to him that there is news in Cwm Ni that someone is stealing dogs.   “Dani and everyone else will suspect them,” Garry insists, 

"I hate the idea of breaking Dani's heart"

but Mark hates the thought of breaking Dani’s heart.

“It’s just until I find him and bring him back to her,” Garry stresses, “After a couple of days, perhaps.”   Mark cannot bring himself to do that to a friend, but Garry pleads for his help;  

"I'll get some slack from Dani, financially"

“If I find the dog, I’ll get some slack from Dani, financially – and you can keep any reward she offers.”

"It will still put her through hell"

Mark is still protesting that it will put her through hell, 

"It will only be for a while"

but Garry reminds him it will only be for a while.   “I’ll never be able to look her in the eye again,” says Mark, and is advised to hide in Maes-y-Deri for a while.   “What, while a friend of mine is crying her heart out, and begging me to help her find little Tedi?   No, Garry!”

"You're supposed to be a friend of mine, too"

“You’re supposed to be a friend of mine as well,” Garry grumbles, and Mark is disappointed that he is behaving like this now, after the divorce.

"I can't do it – you're on your own!"

“A bloke who steals his ex-wife’s dog to hurt her?   No, I can’t do it – you’re on your own!” is Mark’s final word – 

"That dog's worth £3,000"

until Garry reveals that the dog is worth £3,000.

Then Mark hesitates, as Garry continues, “Never mind what he’s worth to Dani on a personal level, course – any reward would be worth having!   And you’d get every penny.”   

Mark is now wavering

Mark’s objections now appear to be evaporating.

There is a coffee mug on the first edition

In the bookshop, Siôn finds that a coffee mug has been left on top of his first edition that he discovered earlier, and he is furious;  

"You can't use my book as a drinks coaster!"

“You can’t use my book as a drinks coaster!” he rages at Tesni, 

"Look at the damage!"

“Look at the damage!   It’s a national treasure!”

"You shouldn't have left it on the counter!"

She shouts back, “You shouldn’t have left it on the counter!” 

"Iolo was right about you!"

and he says that Iolo was right about her – she is untidy and she does not care about other people’s property.

She cannot believe that he has been talking about her to Iolo, 

Tesni flounces out of the shop

picks up her jacket and leaves the shop.

Looking around cautiously . . .

At Deri Fawr, Eifion checks to make sure that no-one is about, 

. . . as he approaches the shed

and investigates the sheds which are being used by Howard;  the sound of dogs can be heard, and as the doors are padlocked, 

He is going to use force to gain entry . . .

he picks up a large stone, with which to batter his way in.

. . . but is prevented from doing so

Before he has a chance to do so, he is advised, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you!” as Howard comes up behind him.   

"I want you off Deri Fawr land today!"

Eifion insists that he wants him and his gang off Deri Fawr land today.   Otherwise he will phone John and tell him exactly what they are doing.

"John will tell you to keep your nose out"

“And John will tell you to keep your nose out,” is Howard’s reply, “Because, like you, John receives a tidy sum for keeping quiet.   You want to see – is that what it is?”   

Howard thinks it is time Eifion saw for himself

Eifion denies this, but Howard continues, “I think it’s about time you saw for yourself exactly how you make your money.”

"I miss her so much"

In the Deri, Rhys and Mathew are looking glum;  “I just didn’t think,” admits Mathew, but Rhys says they were not to know.   “I miss her so much,” Mathew groans, “And I hate thinking that I’ve made someone else feel worse – what are we going to do?”

"What's wrong?   Has someone died?"

Mark comes to the bar and enquires, “What’s wrong with you two?   Has someone died?” 

"Oh – sorry, Mathew"

and then apologises to Mathew.   

"We've hurt a friend"

Rhys explains that they have hurt a friend and are trying to think of a way to put it right.   

“Do you think this friend is going to forgive you?” Mark wonders;  they hope so, 

"We shouldn't have done it in the first place"

and Mathew confesses that they should not have done it in the first place.   

"Well, good luck, boys"

Mark wishes them good luck and walks out again.

"I'm sorry – I overreacted"

When Siôn arrives home at Y Felin, he finds Tesni lying on the sofa with a hot water bottle.   He apologises for what he said earlier, and concedes that he overreacted about the book;  

"Yes, you did!"

she agrees with that.   “Do you think we can make up now?” he asks, but she replies that is not how things work.

"We fall out and we make up"

He knows that their relationship is fiery;  “We fall out and we make up.”   

"Is that why you fall out with me?"

She enquires if that is why he falls out with her – so they can make up afterwards.   He insists, “Every couple argue sometimes – and every couple enjoy making up.   

"As Iolo said . . ."

“It brings the two people closer together – as Iolo said, through kicking and biting . . .”

"You discussed our sex life with Iolo?"

She is very angry;  “Iolo?   You’ve been discussing our sex life with Iolo?”   He says he just wanted some advice;  

"On top of my domestic failings, is it?"

“On top of discussing my domestic failings, is it?” she rages, “Is there anything else you’ve discussed with him?   I’m angry, I’m upset and I’m tired.   

"I'm going to bed– on my own!"

“And I’m going to bed – on my own!”   

Siôn is lost for words

Siôn is left speechless.

Eileen hears noises outside . . . 

It is dark at Penrhewl when Eileen hears some noises outside;  

. . . but can see nothing on the CCTV

she looks at the CCTV image, but can see nothing amiss.   

She gets out the shotgun . . .

She finds the key to the gun cabinet, opens it and takes out a shotgun together with some cartridges.   

. . . loads it . . .

She loads the gun 

. . . and is ready to give the intruder both barrels

and is ready to take it outside when the front door opens, 

A badly injured Eifion staggers in . . . 

and Eifion stumbles in, covered in blood.

. . . and promptly collapses on the floor

She is aghast, as he collapses on to the farmhouse floor;  

"Eifion, can you hear me?"

“Eifion – can you hear me?” she shouts.
