Anita's lunch box for Jason

Anita has prepared a lunch box for Jason and once again reminds him about what he must and must not say to Mickey.

"I tried to act as if it was a shock"

“When Kelly told me last night, I tried to act as if it was a shock,” he says and is rather scathing about the lunchbox;

"I'm not going on a Sunday school trip!"

“I’m going to Merthyr, not on a Sunday school trip.”

She predicts that Mickey may not be there and Jason will have to wait hours for him;  she make sure that he has the postcode,

"Yes, you told me three times last night"

and he complains that she gave him the postcode three times last night.

"Make sure he doesn't find out"

“Please, whatever you do, make sure he doesn’t find out that he is Kelly’s father,” she adds, “If he does find out, we’ll never get rid of him.”

"You sound as if you don't trust me"

Jason is getting really fed up with this, as she is giving the impression she does not trust him;  they both know how important this is.

Kelly is off to work

Then Kelly comes in, preparing to go to work,

"I'm working with Lavinia Price today"

and Jason invents the explanation that he is working with Lavinia Price today;

"A polar bear would give you a warmer welcome"

“A polar bear would give you a warmer welcome,” says Kelly, “Where are my red shoes?”

"I wanted us to go on a shopping spree"

Anita is disappointed that she is going to work, as she would have liked them to go to town on a shopping spree;  “And perhaps talk about Mickey.”   Kelly points out that she is busy and will probably be in work all day;  she comes to the conclusion that she will have to wear her blue shoes,

"Good luck with Lavinia!"

and wishes him good luck with Lavinia.

Tesni displays a notice . . .

Tesni is putting up a notice in the window of the bookshop;

. . . publicising the 'rewilding'

‘Why we need to rewild’.   Opposite, Eifion is handing out flyers to the passers-by,

Gaynor is unaware of this . . .

including Gaynor and Hywel.

. . . so Eifion explains

He explains, “I’m asking people to send a letter to the council, to support rewilding the land at Deri Fawr.”

"Wasting the time of civil servants now"

Hywel growls that he is wasting the time of civil servants as well;  “It’s foolish for local businesses to support such nonsense.”   Tesni describes Hywel as a ‘boomer’,

"No, Tesni, it should be 'Generation X'!"

but Gaynor corrects her that it should be, ‘Generation X’.

"Tesni has every right to show her support"

SiĆ“n is just approaching the shop and comments, “We might not agree, but Tesni has every right to show her support – come on, we’ve got work to do.”

"Following her around like a lovestruck puppy!"

As they go into the shop, Hywel sneers, “Look at him, following her around like a lovestruck puppy!”   Gaynor will read the leaflet later and they walk up the street.

APD's van comes round the corner (actually in Barry)

The camera scans across an area of playing fields, where we see the APD van, which pulls up outside a house;

Jason stops outside Mickey's house

Jason turns off the engine, and it is confirmed that he is at the right house (number 9, St Marks Road) when he sees Mickey, with his watering can.   Jason resolutely gets out of the van and marches towards him.

"You've taken a wrong turn somewhere"

“You’ve taken a wrong turn somewhere,” Mickey jokes, “You’re a long way from the Gwendraeth Valley,”

"It only took me an hour"

but Jason replies that it only took him an hour.

"Is everything all right?"

“Is everything all right?   Nothing’s happened to Kelly?” Mickey goes on.

“I want to talk to you about Kelly – youre getting along well, aren’t you?” says Jason, and Mickey says that she is special person, as he himself knows.

"I've come to tell you to keep away from her!"

“Well, I’ve come here to tell you to stay away from her!” Jason instructs him.

"There's nothing going on"

“There’s nothing going on, if that’s what you worried about,” Mickey assures him, but Jason is more worried about what kind of man he is facing.

"I know how you force yourself on women"

“I know, Mickey, OK?   I know how you like to force yourself on women – I know about your history.   Unless you cut all contact with Kelly, I’ll go straight to the police.”

"I don't know what your problem is, pal"

“I don’t know what your problem is, pal,” Mickey answers, but Jason stresses that he is not his ‘pal’ – they barely know each other.   “Exactly – you can’t turn up, threatening people,” snarls Mickey.

"Amanda – you did rape her!"

“Amanda!” says Jason, “Amanda told Anita – come on, Mickey, you must remember Amanda – I know it was years ago, but you did rape her!”   He cannot believe what Jason is saying, and wonders how long ago they are talking about.

"That was over 35 years ago"

He agrees that he slept with Amanda once, but that was about 35-plus years ago.

"The point is, you raped Amanda!"

“I don’t care how long ago it happen – the point is, you raped Amanda!” emphasises Jason,

"So I'm Kelly's father?"

but the conclusion is occurring to Mickey that that he may be Kelly’s father.   Jason tries to deny this, but Mickey points out that it all makes sense;  he did suspect at the time, but Amanda said that she was Phil’s daughter.

"You're wrong – you're not Kelly's father"

“Listen to me – you’re wrong – you’re not Kelly's father!” Jason insists,

"Why else would you come all this way?"

but Mickey is increasingly convinced that he is, wondering why else he would come all the way to Merthyr.

“It’s OK, I won’t reject her – to be honest, it’s more than OK – it’s perfect,” smiles Mickey,

Jason has not had the desired effect

and Jason looks very downcast.

Wilko slips an envelope into Ffion's door

Wilko has just slipped an envelope into the letterbox of Cysgod y Glyn when Ffion comes out;

"It's best if you read it"

“Sorry, I just wanted to leave you that,” he explains, and she hopes that he will tell her what it is.   “No, it’s best if you read it – sorry,”

Then he walks away

he answers as he walks away.

Ffion looks at the contents with some concern

She looks at what is inside the envelope with some concern.

"I'm responsible, you see"

Jason has retreated to the van, and is invited to have a can, but refuses as he is driving;  “I’m responsible, you see, Mickey – keeping other people safe.”

"Look, I'm not a rapist"

Mickey points out that he is not a rapist and he hopes that this nonsense has not been mentioned to Kelly.

"Cut all contact and she won't have to know anything"

“Cut all contact with her and she won’t have to know anything,” Jason instructs him,

"This is one person's word against another's"

but he is is reminded this is just one person’s word against another’s, and Amanda has never been what the police would call ‘credible’.

Jason makes it very clear that he has not come there to listen to a character assassination of Amanda;  “But you believe that I’m a rapist!” Mickey snarls.   Kelly is the only important one to Jason, but he is told, “I’m glad that she is my daughter.”

"She's managed without you up until now"

“She’s managed without you up until now, so I’m sure she’ll manage in the future,” Jason suggests, but Mickey is not going to let that happen;  he has lost 37 years with her already

"I'm not going to lose another second"

and is not going to lose another second.

"Do you really think she'll want to know you?"

“Do you really think she’ll want to know you when she knows the truth!” Jason demands, and once again Mickey insists that he did not rape Amanda,

"She came up to my room of her own accord"

but she came up to his room that night of her own accord.

Jason informs him, “The thing is, it’s one person’s word against another’s, isn’t it – like you said?   I don’t want Kelly to get hurt – so this is how it’s going to be –

"You're never going to contact Kelly again"

“you’re going to disappear and you’re never going to contact Kelly again.   If you do contact her, we’ll go straight to the police.”

"Don't threaten me!"

Mickey warns him, “Don’t threaten me,” but is told that it is not a threat, but a promise;  “I’m not going to let a waster like you tell me who I can see!” rages Mickey.   Jason emphasises that Kelly is too vulnerable to cope with this.   “There’s nothing to cope with – I’m her father, I have rights!” says Mickey.

"People like you don't have any rights!"

“People like you don’t have any rights!” roars Jason, but is told that Kelly is his daughter and he is going to take his time getting to know her.   There is nothing Jason can do to change that.

This is the point when Jason unleashes a vicious right hook,

"What are you doing, Jase?"

and also the moment when Kelly appears behind him, shouting, “What are you doing?”

He is rather taken aback

He was not expecting that.

"Who's going to tell me what the hell's going on?"

A few minutes later they are in the garden;  “Right, who’s going to tell me what the hell’s going on?” Kelly demands.   Jason replies that Mickey is not who she thinks he is,

"He's my Dad – that's what's important"

but she points out, “He’s my Dad – that’s what’s important.”

"How long have you known"

Mickey wonders how long she has known;

"This flamin' idiot has spoiled it all"

“A couple of days – I’m really sorry this flamin’ idiot has spoiled it all.”

He is obviously feeling the effects

He replies that nothing could spoil this and he could not be happier.   Jason intervenes to point out that Mickey has spoiled it and begins to explain to Kelly that things are more complicated than she realises.

"They aren't actually – they're simple"

She reprimands him, “They aren’t actually – they’re simple – I’ve never known my father, and this is my chance – as long as you don’t try to punch his lights out!”

"Come home and I'll explain everything"

Jason begs her to come home and he will explain everything, but she screams that she is not going to;

"If you've got something to say, say it"

“If you’ve got something to say, say it, so that Dad . . .”   She lingers over that word,

She finds the word 'Dad' rather strange

then continues, “Has the chance to defend himself.”

"Go, or I'll report you for ABH!"

Once again Jason tries to explain that she does not know Mickey, so Kelly suggests that she could phone the cops;  “You either go, or I report you for ABH – and we both know how much hassle that is!

"I'm serious, mind"

“I’m serious, mind.”

Jason has little option but to go

Jason has little choice but to retreat.

Ffion thanks Wilko for the letter

Ffion visits Wilko and thanks him for the letter;  “I find that these things are easier to write down,” he says, and she asks how long his mother has been an alcoholic.

"Since I can remember"

“Since I can remember,” he says.

"I would never go back to drinking"

“Look, I’ve done many things I’m ashamed of, but now I know I’ll never go back to drinking because of Arwen,” she tells him, and he cannot remember his mother ever being dry – no child deserves that upbringing.

"I've never had a pint – or any children"

“That’s why I’ve never had a pint – or any children, he admits, “I’m sorry if that’s hard for you to hear.   Look, I did like you – I do like you.”

Ffion is getting her hopes up . . .

She admits that she likes him a lot, and now that she understands his side of things, she hopes they can get to know each other better slowly.

. . . but they are dashed

He dashes her hopes with, “I cannot risk falling for you – if you ever needed help, I could never be there for you.”

"Thanks for being honest"

She thanks him for being honest and admires him for that,

"I'll see you around, yeah?"

but she sadly turns and leaves the house;  Wilko appears disappointed.

She marches across the road . . .

Ffion walks angrily across the road,

. . . but takes a backward glance

looking back at the house, then continuing towards Cysgod y Glyn.

"I kind of guessed that you didn't know"

“I kind of guessed that you didn’t know you were my father,” says Kelly, and he admits that he did not know, but is really over the moon to discover that he is.   “I’m just gutted that I didn’t break the news to you,” she groans,

"We can get to know each other"

but he says it does not matter who did – the point is that they have plenty of time to get to know each other now.

"Funny you should say that"

“Funny you should say that,” Kelly remarks and delves into her bag,

She has a present for him

taking out a small box which she gives to him.   “It’s just something – not very original – I don’t know –

"To make up for the time we've missed out on"

“it’s just something to make up for the time we’ve missed out on together.

"Do you like it?"

“Do you like it?”

"It's perfect!"

He is delighted with the watch

Kelly smiles, radiantly

and Kelly smiles.

Jinx sees the note

Jinx arrives back in the flat and sees the note from Wilko, which he reads;

Ffion is very subdued

Ffion comes in, looking very subdued, and he is concerned about her.   “It’s just me, being me,” she groans, “He’s doing his best, Jinx, under difficult circumstances.”

"That Wilko is upsetting you every two minutes"

He objects to Wilko upsetting her every two minutes.

"It's too risky"

“His mother drank, and he had a terrible upbringing – and he doesn’t want to get to know me because it’s too risky,” she goes on.

"He's just not worth it"

Jinx concludes that he is just not worth it, but he has made Ffion realise that it does not matter how long she works at it, or how long she stays dry;

"In the eyes of everyone, I'm still an 'alky'!"

“In the eyes of everyone else, I’m still an ‘alky’!   It doesn’t matter how long I stop drinking for,

"It's going to cast its shadow over my life"

“it’s going to cast its shadow over me for the rest of my life!”

Jason is back home

Jason returns home to Bryntirion and Anita hurries downstairs to hear his report;  “It could have gone better!” he snarls, “I didn’t tell him – he guessed –

"And then I hit him!"

“and then I hit him!”

"He's going to come back here, Jason!"

Anita is afraid that he will come back and start throwing his weight about, but he points out that Mickey is all right;

"Kelly's looking after him – yeah, Kelly!"

“Kelly is looking after him – yeah, Kelly!   That’s who turned up the second I decided to hit him!”

"You shouldn't have left them together!"

Anita then reprimands him for leaving them alone together, and he asks what else he was supposed to do;  “She wanted to talk to her father – I didn’t want her to find out he raped her mother –

"What other choice did I have?"

“so tell me what other choice did I have?”

"I should never have trusted you with this!"

“I knew I should never have trusted you with this!” she rages, “You’ve makes things worse now.   Think about it – you’ve sent her deeper into his arms now!   This is a right mess, isn’t it?”
and she emits a strange growling noise.

Jinx brings Ffion her meal

Jinx has prepared a meal for Ffion, urging her to keep her strength up

"Is the statue ready?"

and she wonders if the statue is ready for the big revelation.

"It's going to be rather tight"

He thinks that it is going to be rather tight,

"I've taken up so much of your time"

and she apologises for taking up so much of his time.

"I'm lucky to have a friend like you"

“Wilko might not want to take the risk, but I consider myself lucky to have a friend like you,” he assures her;

Ffion finds this very touching

she is very touched by this.

Anita is becoming very domineering

Anita instructs Jason to phone Kelly;  “Just do it!” she exclaims, and at that moment, Kelly comes in through the front door.   Anita is very anxious that she is all right.

"You're lucky Mickey is a gentleman"

“Do you know what?   If I had my way, he would be in the station giving a statement,” declares Kelly, “You’re lucky Mickey is a gentleman and doesn’t want to accuse his daughter’s boyfriend of ABH.”

"There's not an ounce of 'gentleman' in him!"

Jason insists that there is not an ounce of ‘gentlemen’ in him, but Anita tells him to be quiet.

"I'm going to move out and live with Mickey . . ."

“You’re as bad as one another – I’m going to pack my stuff, move out, and live with Mickey!” Kelly squeals.

Jason groans, “No,”

". . . to make up for all the years we've missed out on"

but she is determined to make up for the thirty-six and a half years they have missed out on.

"You can't do that, Kelly!"

He insists, “You can’t do that,” but her mind is made up, and she starts going up the stairs.

Anita says the same thing

Anita joins in the protest that she really cannot do that, and Kelly groans, “Do you know what’s really tragic?

"I finally have a fairytale ending"

“After everything that’s happened in my life, I finally have a fairytale ending – and you want to wreck it!”

“Kelly – you’re so wrong,” says Jason, and she demands in what way she is wrong.

"Mickey raped your mother!"

Anita replies that there are no fairytale endings;  “I’m so sorry, but Mickey raped your mother!”

Kelly is aghast

A look of horror comes over Kelly’s face.
