Siôn approaches Yr Antur

Siôn is walking along the street, where he sees Diane putting the signs outside Yr Antur to indicate that polling is taking place;

"I have to remain unbiased"

“I have to remain unbiased of course,” she says, “As I have an official rôle,” but she nevertheless wishes him good luck.   “I wouldn’t like to change places with you,” she admits,

"You look very nervous"

“You look very nervous.”

And this is why

This is not surprising, as Garry is watching them from inside MFC;

Jinx is passing

then he sees Jinx passing and raps on the window.

"I want The Pizza Place empty!"

“I want The Pizza Place empty,” he informs Jinx, “By the end of the week!”

Siôn knows he is under the surveillance . . .

Siôn looks across, well aware of the fact that

. . . of Garry's beady eye

he is being watched.

Greta recommends voting for Siôn

Iolo is approaching Bethania with Greta;  “Be honest – do I vote for Grandad or Lleucu?” he asks her, and she favours her grandfather.

"I just want to borrow her for one minute":

The door of Bethania suddenly opens and Eileen asks, “Greta, are you ready?”   She tells Iolo, “I just want to borrow her for one minute,” and they go into the chapel.

Iolo is puzzled . . .

Iolo wonders what is going on

. . . and joins some other parents

joins the other two parents waiting outside.

Ieuan is very emotional

At number 7, Ieuan is looking very emotional, as music is playing in the background, ‘Qui venit in nomine Domini.’  [He who comes in the name of the Lord.]

He finds a slip of paper

He picks up a piece of paper from the floor,

"I'm here for you"

which bears the words, ‘Anita – you’re safe.   I’m here for you.’

He is very upset

He is extremely upset about something.

The music continues, ‘Hosanna in excelsis.’  [Glory in the highest]

Lleucu wants to talk to Eleri

Lleucu approaches Eleri in the street and is warned not to ask her who she will be voting for.

"I'm worried about Siwsi"

This is not what Lleucu wants to say;  “I’m worried about Siwsi – she’s very upset– she’d never steal – she thinks the world of Anita.”

"She was caught on camera"

Eleri replies that she was caught on camera, but Lleucu protests, “She said she put Anita’s necklace back in the box.”   Eleri points out that is exactly what she would say.

"Can't you give her another chance?"

Lleucu pleads with her to give Siwsi another chance.

“Like I told Siwsi, I can’t give her another chance without an investigation.   I have a responsibility to find out exactly what happened.

"You focus on the election"

“You focus on the election and leave Siwsi to me.”

Eileen leads the children

is surprised to see a group of children being led by Eileen from the chapel to stand by the alley.

Siôn does not know what is going on

Siôn has also happened upon this, and they both wonder what is going on.

They perform a song . . .

Jinx arrives with his guitar and is reprimanded by Eileen for being late;  she conducts, as the six children sing:

. . . praising Siôn and denigrating Lleucu

“Siôn is the man for the job, oi, oi.

Siôn is the man for the job, oi, oi.

Better for the valley than useless Lleucu,

Siôn is the man for the job!”

Eileen is very pleased with this,

"You're not allowed to canvass!"

but is reminded by Lleucu, “You’re not allowed to canvass on the morning of the election!”

"You didn't say this was a propaganda mission!"

Jinx had not been told that this was a propaganda mission

"It's nothing to do with me!"

and Siôn is quick to point out that its is nothing to do with him.   Eileen simply tells them to repeat the song,

"I could report you, Siôn!"

while Lleucu threatens to report Siôn to the authorities for breaking the rules.

Siôn is in agreement with her, stressing that she has a point;  “I know you’re trying to help, Eileen, but a rule is a rule.   There is nothing I can do now – it is out of my control   if I’m suspended, I’d have to accept it.

She does not like not being appreciated

Sour-faced Eileen does not like this at all

Esther is packing for a trip

Esther is packing a rather small bag, when there is a knock at the door of number 21, and Rhys lets in Ieuan.   He is speaking to Siôn on the phone,

"Yes, I know I need to vote"

“Yes, Siôn, I know I need to vote today – don’t worry about it.”

Hywel is angry

Hywel comes downstairs and is angry with Esther for not being ready to leave, but she protests that she cannot find her lip gloss.

"I'm not going without my lip glass"

He tells her that they are late, but she insists that she is not going without it.

"Trip to the big smoke, is it?"

“A trip to the big smoke, is it?” comments Ieuan;  as Esther is still searching for her lip gloss, Ieuan wants to meet Hywel later,

"I'm on duty with the election later"

but he replies that unfortunately he is on duty with the election and shouts for Esther once again.

"Will you have two minutes later on?"

“Will you have two minutes later on?” pleads Ieuan, “A sensitive matter has turned up.”

"I haven't got time for that now"

Hywel makes it very clear that he has no time for that now, and now Esther has found the missing item, so they hurry out of the house, with Esther moaning.

"I have to go to work now"

Rhys can see that there is something troubling Uncle Ieuan, but also needs to go to work now.

"I've got a couple of jobs to do at Morawel . . .;"

“Don’t worry – I’ve got a couple of jobs to do at Morawel, anyway,” is the reply,

". . . there aren't enough hours in the day"

“There aren’t enough hours in the day.”

Dai arrives at the polling station

At the polling station, Dai walks in and Diane and announces to him that he is the new counting agent, as,

"Blinkin' Hywel Llywelyn hasn't turned up!"

“Blinkin’ Hywel Llywelyn hasn’t turned up!   I can’t just ask anyone – I need someone I can trust.”

This persuades him to do the job,

"Then only person this guy has ever voted for is himself!"

then he looks across and comments, “Garry Monk!   You do realise we’re doing something for the community here, don’t you?   The only person this guy has ever voted for is himself!”

"Who saved the village from being flooded?"

Garry snarls in reply, “Remind me, Dai, who saved the village from being flooded – oh yeah, me!   Can I have some peace to cast my vote, please?”

"Wonderful to see democracy in action!"

Howard hands him the voting paper and he comments, “Its wonderful to see democracy in action, isn’t it?”

Eleri arrives at The Pizza Place . . .

Eleri comes into The Pizza Place,

. . . where everything is being packed up

where Jinx is packing things away into boxes.   “No more cooking greasy overpriced pizzas for you, then?”

"My pizza days are over"

He concedes that his pizza days are over;  he is just clearing this place for her dear lodger.   She maintains that Garry does have a point, to be fair.

"I slaved over pepperoni – for what?"

“I slaved over pepperoni for months to get this place on its feet – and for what?”

"You'll get back on your feet"

Eleri informs him that the business world is a cruel mistress, but she predicts that he will get back on his feet. dust that flour off and start again.

"This is the start of a new chapter"

She will help him clear up – they will do it together;  “What else am I going to do with my afternoon off?   And smile – this is the start of a new chapter, not the end.”

"I have no idea what I am going to do"

He has no idea what he is going to do,

"You can do whatever you want"

but she argues that he can do whatever he wants

"Go in one at a time"

Lleucu is addressing a group of fellow pupils;  “There isn’t much room in there so go one at a time, OK?   The future of the village is in our hands – together, we can make a difference!”

"I'm not breaking any rules"

Then she sees that Siôn is watching and assures him, “Before you start, I’m not breaking any rules – no more than you did anyway.”

"I'm pleased to see pupils taking an interest"

Siôn is pleased to see pupils taking an interest, stressing that it is important to involve young people.

"Who organised the school trip?"

Garry  is nearby and does not appear to agree with this statement;  “Who organised the school trip?” he demands.   Lleucu answers that she is just involving young people.

"I can't make head nor tail of this list"

Meanwhile Dai comes out to query with Diane, “I can’t make head nor tail of this list.”   Garry is quick to enquire what list this may be,

"Making sure no-one votes twice"

with Diane explaining that it is a way of making sure that no-one votes twice.

There is another Ffion in Cwmderi

Inside, Howard is having difficulty finding the name of one of the pupils – coincidentally called Ffion.   Then

"We've got a problem!"

Garry calls him aside:  “We’ve got a problem – we can’t get rid of Lleucu’s votes – they’re checking the numbers against the names.”

"I could have told you that!"

“I could have told you that!” sneers Howard, but Garry has an idea – another one.

"Plan B!"

He rather emphatically instructs Howard that it is Plan B.

"Where have you been?"

Hywel is looking very frustrated when he returns to number 21.   Rhys wonders where he has been;  “I was about to send out a search party.”

"I had to chase it down the motorway"

“We missed the bus, didn’t we?   I had to chase it down the motorway until it stopped at the services – and then I got stuck in traffic on the way back!”

"I think Ieuan was a bit upset . . ."

Rhys reminds his father about earlier;  “I think Ieuan was a bit upset that you shouted at him.”

“Couldn’t he see that I was busy with Esther?   I wasn’t angry with him,” Hywel answers, but is advised by Rhys that he ought to phone Ieuan, as he is going through so much at the moment.

". . . I think he's lonely"

“I think he’s lonely,” Rhys adds, so Hywel gets out his phone and dials the number,

They hear a phone buzzing . . .

but then hears a mobile phone buzzing from the other room.

. . . from the sofa

They find it down the side of the sofa, with Ieuan’s bank cards as well,

"I shall have to take it to him"

so Hywel will have to take it to him.

"He said something about working at Morawel"

“He said something about working at Morawel,” Rhys tells him, so Hywel is far from pleased, complaining that he has been in the car for six hours already.

"He can pay for the petrol!"

“That idiot of a brother will have to pay for the petrol,” he growl.”

"I forgot to vote myself"

At the end of polling, Dai seems to be anxious to get home.   Eileen tells him, “I’ve been so busy and encouraging everyone to support Siôn, I forgot to vote myself!”

"You're lucky you can still vote!"

Diane maintain that she is lucky she can still vote, after that show outside;  “Not again, Diane – those children were canvassing – they were entertaining the public,” Eileen insists.

"Call that racket entertainment?"

“Do you call that racket entertainment?” moans Dai.
"The polls are closed!"

Diane looks at her watch and declares that the polls are closed.

"Hallelujah!   I'm starving!"

“Hallelujah!   I’m starving!” exclaims Dai,

"No-one's leaving until the count is done"

but she points out to him that no-one is leaving until the count is done.

"Nefi wen!"

This does not go down well with Dai, who shouts, Nefi wen!”

"Accurate and organised"

Diane informs Howard and his colleague behind the desk, “I want the count to be accurate and organised,” then asks that the door is closed.

Howard opens the box

She instructs Howard to open the box.

Meanwhile Dai suggests that he can get a bag of chips and a rissole, but Diane says she has some biscuits in her bag.   “I hope you’ve got Garibaldis,” he grumbles,

Strange colour for Bourbons!

but the packet he finds in the bottom of her bag is of Bourbons.

"You know I can't stand Bourbons!"

“You know I can’t stand bourbons!”

What is Howard up to?

Howard makes sure that no-one is looking,

Could he be spoiling ballot papers?

then it appears that he may be tampering with the votes with a red pen.

Number 9 is filling up with pizza ingredients

Jinx and Eleri arrive at number 9 with the last load of things from The Pizza Place.   “Thanks for giving me a kick up the backside,” says Jinx, as he carries a bag of Wright’s pizza flour into the kitchen.   “And thanks for your help – you’ve made a boring job a lot more fun.”

"It's not the end of the world, you know"

“It’s not the end of the world, you know,” she replies,

"I'm losing my livelihood"

but he points out that he is losing his livelihood.

"Not everyone can call themselves an artist"

“You’ve got talent – not everyone can call themselves an artist.”

"I haven't touched a paintbrush for weeks"

He groans, “I’m not an artist – I haven’t touched a paintbrush for weeks – I just don’t have the desire, no oomph, no inspiration!   Every artist needs a muse –

"I don't think I'll ever pick up another one"

“the way I’m feeling, I don’t think I’ll ever pick up another paintbrush.”

Eleri has an idea

Eleri maintains that he never knows what is around the corner, then has a brainwave and leaves the house.   When he enquires where she is going,

"Surprise!"

she simply replies, “Surprise!   Don’t go anywhere.”

"This is worse than waiting foe exam results"

As everyone is waiting in the Deri, Lleucu says that it is worse than waiting for exam results.   Iolo warns her not to say anything to his father, but has a good feeling about today.

"Champagne on ice, please"

It appears that Eileen has already decided that Siôn has won, as she is ordering some champagne on ice from Geraint, behind the bar.

Let's have some decorum!"

Dai and Diane come in and would like some attention;  Dai shouts, “Come on – shush – show some decorum!”

“I’m happy to say that I have the result.”

Howard and . . .

Howard and

. . . Garry exchange glances

Garry look at each other.   “But before I announce your representative on the parish council this year,

"My husband and I"

“I just want to say that it’s been a honour for my husband and I to pay such a key part in this important process.

"A key element of democracy"

“Holding a well-organised and fair election is a key element of a democracy as a country, so . . .”

"So it's time for the result!"

At this point, Eileen cannot wait any longer, but shouts, “So it’s time for the result, I hope!   We’ll be ready to elect the next ones at this rate.”

"Ballots spoilt – 11"

Diane moves on to the result:  “A total of 409 votes were cast, the number of ballots spoilt was 11.

"Lleucu Rossiter – 197"

“The number of votes for Lleucu Rossiter – 197,

"Siôn White – 201"

“Siôn White – 201.   Siôn White is the parish councillor for Cwmderi.”

Eileen is delighted

Predictably, Eileen is delighted by this result;

"Smile, then, Siôn"

Iolo also congratulates him and Eileen urges him to smile.   “It’s a shock, that’s all,” Siôn maintains and tells Lleucu that she would have made a tremendous councillor.

Lleucu congratulates Siôn

She does not intend to stay for the celebrations and leaves the Deri;

Again Siôn knows . . .

Siôn looks across with concern

. . . that Garry is watching

to where Garry is raising a glass to him.

Eleri is back, wearing a dressing gown

Jinx opens the door of number 9 as Eleri returns, wearing her dressing gown;

"Right, Picasso!"

“Right, Picasso, if you think I’m going to let you waste your talent, you can think again.   You’re an artist and an artist creates.”

"I don't have anything to paint"

“Yes, but I’ve told you I don’t have anything to paint,” he replies.

She unfastens the dressing gown . . .

“Don’t you?” she asks, then unties her dressing gown, which falls to the floor,

. . . under which she does not appear to be wearing anything

leaving her totally naked, although we do not have visual confirmation of that.

"Go and get your brush!"

Jinx does not know what to say, so she instructs him to go and get his brush,

He cannot believe what is happening

which, after some hesitation, he does.

Hywel is outside Morawel in the pouring rain

That music is playing again,
‘Qui venit in nomine Domini’ as the scene shifts to Morawel;  Hywel is outside, knocking on the patio door in the pouring rain and shouting Ieuan’s name.

There is no reply to his knocking

As there is no response, he tries the door,

He lets himself in . . .

which opens and he goes inside.

. . . notices an empty glass . . .

Hywel looks around, noticing an empty whisky glass,

. . . then searches the house

then searches the rest of the house.

There is loud peal of thunder

A sudden rumble of thunder makes him uneasy as he proceeds along the hallway.

He continues searching . . .

The music continues;  ‘Hosanna in excelsis.   Benedictus.’

. . . then hears some groaning

He cannot see any sign of his brother and turns to leave again, when he suddenly hears a sound of faint groaning, so he opens the door from which this sound seems to be coming.

In the bathroom is an empty bottle . . .

There is an empty whisky bottle rolling across the floor

. . . and a semiconscious Ieuan

and Ieuan is lying in the bath in a semiconscious state.

Hywel is astounded

Hywel cannot believe his eyes.
