Kelly anxiously waits
Kelly is sitting anxiously in a chair, waiting for Ieuan to come downstairs; he remarks that she is up early and asks if everything is all right.
Just hear me out, right?"
“You don’t want to hear this – but just hear me out, right?” she begins,
"I think I know who's been stealing from Auntie Neet"
“I think I know who’s been stealing from Auntie Neet.”
Britt spots a familiar face
Britt is cleaning tables in MFC when she notices a familiar face passing;
"What are you doing back here?"
she hurries to the door and welcomes Gwern back from Spain. “What are you doing here?”
"Dad insisted I should come back"
He replies that his father insisted that he should catch the first flight back from Spain; “He wouldn’t tell me anything on the phone – he said he wanted to talk to me face-to-face.
Britt is puzzled
Britt cannot imagine what that is all about.
"She wouldn't do any such thing"
Having been told about Kelly’s discovery, Ieuan insists that his granddaughter would not do such a thing.
"She's the one masquerading as Eira"
Kelly declares, “She’s the one masquerading as Eira, I swear – I was there, I saw her.”
"You must have misunderstood"
He is still convinced that she misunderstood,
"I saw her nicking the brooch . . ."
so she shouts, “Ieuan! I heard her call Auntie Neet ‘Mam’ and I saw her nicking the brooch.
". . . how much more evidence do you need?"
“How much more evidence do you need?”
Now Ieuan maintain that there must be an innocent explanation. “OK, fine – I want to hear it, so are you coming or what?” exclaims Kelly.
"What's going on with you?"
Britt finds Garry in the deli and demands, “What’s going on with you?”
"And a good morning to you"
“And a good morning to you,” he replies.
"What's your game, dragging him back from Spain?"
She wants to know what is his game, dragging Gwern all the way back from Spain. Garry is pleased to hear that he is back.
“Yes, just as you demanded – he’s totally confused and I’m not surprised, either. There’s something going on – I can tell – and I’m not shifting from here until . . .”
"You can hear the same time as everyone else"
Garry tells her to calm down, advising that she can hear the news at the same time as everyone else does, so she gets up and storms out.
"I didn't intend to hurt anyone"
“I didn’t intend to hurt anyone,” Indeg tells Kelly,
"What did you think would be the consequences?"
who asks her what she thought the consequences would be of pretending to be Anita's daughter. “I didn’t – I just . . .”
"Deliberately misleading a dementia patient"
“Deliberately misleading a dementia patient?” Kelly suggests. “Someone who’s really vulnerable – how sick is that, Indeg?
"We talked about adjusting her medication"
“We talked about adjusting her medication because her hallucinations were so extreme!”
"I didn't want to deceive anyone"
Indeg pleads that she did not want to deceive anyone and it was Anita who started calling her Eira; “I didn’t want to correct her in case I upset her.”
"Eira died when she was a little baby"
Kelly spells it out to her, “Eira died when she was a little baby, a few hours after she was born – Auntie Neet didn’t even hold her in her arms. I was there and it was traumatising! You’ve just ripped the wound wide open.”
"I felt so awful"
Indeg pleads that she did not know that Eira was Anita's daughter and she had no idea that she was dead. “When I found out I felt awful – so guilty.”
"But not awful enough to stop the deception!"
“But not guilty enough to stop the deception,” Kelly reminds her, “I heard you call her ‘Mam’.”
"What's going on?"
Siwsi comes downstairs, having heard the raised voices and wants to know what is going on.
"Are you going to tell her or shall I?"
“Are you going to tell her or shall I?” enquires Kelly.
"Is it because she's still my friend?"
Siwsi demands why they are having a go at Indeg; “Is it because she’s still my friend? She hasn’t done anything wrong!”
"Believe me, she's no friend of yours!"
Ieuan speaks up, “Yes, she has – and believe me, Siwsi, she’s no friend of yours.”
"Why one earth would he want me to come home?"
Gwern has gone to Maes-y-Deri and asks Dani, “Why on earth would he want me to come home for a face-to-face chat? Unless he has some bad news?
"Is he in trouble with the police again?"
“Is he in trouble with the police again?”
"I doubt it – he's out on licence . . ."
She replies that she doubts it, as he is out on licence, so Gwern assumes that he must be sick or something. Dani stresses that she does not know,
". . . but I saw him in the hospital"
adding, “But I saw him in the hospital not long ago – a few weeks ago and he said it was a routine checkup, so don’t worry about nothing.”
"If he's sick, ~I have to know!"
Gwern is adamant that if his father is sick, he has to know; he is about to leave the house and Dani will come with him.
Ieuan apologises to Siwsi
Ieuan is apologising to Siwsi; “I’m sorry you were wrongly accused – we’re as shocked about it as you are.”
"I just can't understand"
Then he turns his attention to Indeg; “I just can’t understand.”
"I can explain"
Indeg quickly gets up from her seat and it says that she can explain;
"Gon on, then – we're all ears!"
“Go on, then – we’re all ears, aren’t we?” snarls Kelly.
"I was chuffed that Anita recognised me"
“I went over to visit Siwsi in work one day and Anita called me over – I was chuffed that she recognised me, so I sat with her and did her nails. It was nice to get to know her without the strain of living under the same roof. She gave me her bracelet – it was a present to say thanks for coming.”
"So you popped back to get more gifts"
“So what did you do? Decide to pop back and get more gifts?” asks Kelly.
"You were always sitting with Anita"
Siwsi add that she did call round at Brynawelon quite often and was always sitting with her, sometimes for hours.
"I enjoyed spending time with her"
Indeg maintains that she enjoyed spending time with Anita,
"How could you do that to my wife?"
but Ieuan puts a stop to this, “Don’t you dare! You used Anita – how could you do that to my wife? Not only are you a con artist and a thief,
"You're a two-faced little madam!"
“you’re a two-faced little madam!”
Ieuan turns and walks out of the house, followed by Kelly.
Siwsi glares at her
Siwsi is left, looking reproachfully at Indeg, then she goes upstairs.
"You must know what's going on"
Gwern and Dani have now gone to Cysgod y Glyn; “You must know what’s going on,” says Dani,
"I don't know what's going on in his head"
but Eleri points out that the fact she shares a flat with Garry does not mean that she knows what is going on in his head.
"Surely you'd know if he was sick?"
“But surely you would know if he was sick?” Gwern continues. She replies that she would not necessarily know and, in any case, it would be a private matter. “He’s forced me to come back from Spain – if you know what he wants to tell me, you might as well tell me now.”
"Leave this to me, Gwern"
Dani advises him to leave this to her, so he walks out of the flat in disgust.
"Right, out with it!"
When he has gone, Dani demands, “Right, out with it – what’s this news he’s got?”
"He doesn't share anything with me"
“I have no idea, Garry doesn’t share anything with me, apart from a few spreadsheets.” Dani points out that she saw him in the hospital and he said it was a routine check up. “Whether Garry’s sick or not, it’s none of my concern,” Eleri stresses.
"Tell me – for Gwern's sake!"
“Well, it is to me, because it affects Gwern – we’ve lost so much – but nobody more than him, so please, if you know anything, just tell me – for Gwern’s sake.”
"Hand on heart, I don't know anything"
Eleri replies, “Hand on heart, I don’t know anything,” so Dani walks out.
As soon as she has gone, Eleri picks up her phone and dials Garry’s number;
"Come home now – I want a word"
“No – don’t phone me back – you need to come home now – I want a word!”
"What's the plan of action?"
Back at number 7, Kelly asks, “So what’s the plan of action?” Ieuan still cannot believe it. “I know that, but we need to focus now – damage limitation.”
"We need the jewellery back"
He agrees that they need the jewellery back,
"Whoa – Siwsi could lose hr job!"
but she exclaims, “Whoa – I’m not talking about Auntie Neet’s jewels now. Siwsi’s under investigation for theft.. – she could lose her job!”
"Yes, we have to clear her name"
He realises that she is right and that they have to clear her name.
He wonders where Kelly is going now;
"Somebody has to get Siwsi her job back"
she answers, “To see Eleri – somebody has to get Siwsi her job back.”
"You can come to the meeting as well"
As Garry is telling Eleri that she can attend the meeting as well, the buzzer sounds and Kelly needs to speak to Eleri, so he lets her in as he leaves.
"Don't shoot the messenger"
“OK, number one, don’t shoot the messenger,” Kelly begins, so Eleri enquires who she is meant to shoot.
"There's been a slight mishap . . ."
“Right, I’m really sorry, there’s been a slight mishap –
". . . in fact, a major catastrophe"
“well, in fact, there’s been a major catastrophe. Siwsi didn’t steal Auntie Neet’s jewellery – she’s totally innocent.”
"How can you be so sure of that?"
Eleri enquires how she can be so sure of that
"I caught her red-handed – Indeg"
and is told, “Because I caught the culprit red-handed – Indeg. Genuine mistake, OK? Ieuan and I are absolutely mortified – and I owe you a massive apology.”
"Thank goodness for that"
Eleri simply sighs, “Indeg – thank goodness for that!”
"You what?"
which Kelly finds rather perplexing.
"She isn't a staff member"
“She isn’t a staff member – that’s been a headache.”
"It's been a bit of a headache for Ieuan, to be honest"
“Finding out that his granddaughter’s a thief has been, you know, a bit of a headache for Ieuan, to be honest,” Kelly goes on.
Eleri says that she tries to stay out of other people’s family sagas. “Anyway, I just wanted to come and see you ASAP so that Siwsi can have her name cleared and get her job back and stuff,” says Kelly.
"You leave Siwsi to me"
“You leave Siwsi to me,” says Eleri, “I don’t want allegations of unfair dismissal flying around. Was there anything else?” she adds as she picks up her phone.
Kelly leaves
"I haven't come here to preach . . ."
Ieuan has gone once more to Y Felin, reassuring Indeg that he has not come there to preach;
". . . I just want the jewellery back"
“I’ve come to ask you to return the jewellery on Anita’s behalf. I take it from what you said earlier and from what Kelly saw that Anita herself gave them to you voluntarily.”
"She's always been too generous"
Indeg nods her head; “She’s always been too generous.
"Just give them back and we'll forget it"
“Look, if you give them back to me now, perhaps we can forget about everything that’s happened.”
“I can’t,” says Indeg, so he wonders why not, as that jewellery does not mean anything to her. He encourages her to just go and get it.
"I don't have them"
She groans, “I don’t have them.”
"That was Mami's jewellery . . ."
“Don’t tell me you’ve sold them? That was Mami’s jewellery – her personal objects!
". . . priceless!"
“The sentimental value is priceless!”
"I'm so sorry, Tycs"
Indeg knows that and says that she is so sorry. “I could have given you money if you had asked!” he rages,
"You've deceived us all!"
“You’ve deceived your family, your friends – worse than that, you’ve broken the last connection I had to Mami! Nobody’s disappointed me as much as you – nobody!
"Don't ever go anywhere near Anita again!"
“Right, don’t you ever go anywhere near Anita again – I’m ashamed to call you my granddaughter!”
Ieuan storms off
He hurries out of the house.
They wait outside The Pizza Place
Gwern, Britt and Dani are assembled outside The Pizza Place, waiting for Garry.
That appears to have replaced the mythical horse
Incidentally, the statue of a mythical horse, Fflam, which stood in the flower bed since 21 March 2023, has now been replaced for some reason by a ram.
"I appreciate that you're all here"
Then he approaches and thanks them for coming. “I appreciate that you’re all here.”
"I've got customers waiting for their chicken nuggets"
Britt tells him to make it snappy; “I’ve got customers waiting for their chicken nuggets.
"Family is important to me . . .`'
“I just want to say how important family support is to me –
". . . and succession"
“and succession. That the reins are passed on to the right people at the right time.
"I've bought The Pizza Place for you"
“So, Gwern, it’s time for you to know that I’ve bought The Pizza Place for you.”
He holds out the keys to Gwern,
"I thought you had something important to say"
who exclaims, “That’s why you insisted I came back all the way from Spain? I thought you had something important to say.”
Garry regard it as important,
"You want me to make pizzas?"
but is told, “That you want me to make pizzas for the rest of my life?”
Gwern walks away
and walks off around the corner,
Not what Garry was expecting
which was not the response for which Garry was hoping.
Indeg is in floods of tears . . .
Indeg is mopping up the tears at Y Felin
. . . alone at Y Felin
as she sobs piteously.
Gwern has not gone far
Gwern has not gone far, but just round the corner
"He should he grateful!"
and is listening to Britt explaining to Garry that it is a big shock for all of them. Garry is unmoved; “How many boys do you know who get a business given to them on a plate, for free, before they’re 18? He should be grateful!”
"Grateful for what?"
Gwern returns, raging, “Grateful for what? Getting dragged home with no idea what was going on?” Garry maintains that he is showing a lot of faith in him.
"Why didn't you just bask what I want?"
“Why didn’t you just ask me what I want?”
Garry has it all planned
Garry is sure that he wants a future and a chance to prove himself, maintaining that this will be a family business; “You’ll be serving pizzas, Dani will do the cleaning and Britt will do the books.”
"You're trying to control me!"
“You want this, not me!” growls Gwern, “You’re trying to control me.”
"I want to safeguard the Monks' future"
Garry shouts, “I want to safeguard the Monks’ future in this village – and you throw it back in my face!”
"I thought you were dying"
“I thought you were dying and that you were going to tell me you were sick and that you wouldn’t get better! What was I supposed to think?” Gwern demands. “Since you phoned, I’ve been convinced and preparing myself because I didn’t expect to lose Mam or Seren, but if I had to lose you as well,
"At least I'd be prepared this time"
“at least I’d be prepared this time. I’ve needed you, Dad – the only reason you need me is to run a pizza shop –
"Stuff you!"
“stuff you!”
Garry miscalculated there
He walks away along the street, followed by Dani.
"You could have stuck up for me"
Siwsi is now at Cysgod y Glyn, informing Eleri, “You could have stuck up for me as one of your staff members, if nothing else.”
"I'd like you to come back to work"
Eleri points out that there had to be an investigation in fairness to everyone and now that it has been confirmed that she is innocent, “I’d like you to come back to work – there’s no point wasting time, is there? How about you come back tomorrow morning?”
"How much more money?"
“What are we looking at?” Siwsi asks, and when told that nine o’clock should be fine, continues, “How much more money?”
"How would £300 sound?"
She is told that a pay increase is out of the question, but, to avoid any ill feeling, Eleri can offer a bonus; “How would £300 sound?”
"For not making a official complaint?"
“For what? For not making an official complaint – or not going to the media?” wonders Siwsi,
"£500 – final offer"
so the offer is increased to £500, which she accepts.
"You should keep a low profile"
She is advised to keep a low profile until the dust settles, as Eleri has to consider the ‘optics’, to let the scandal blow over; she will see Siwsi tomorrow.
"I want to talk to you"
Garry arrives at Maes-y-Deri, looking for Gwern, but Dani wants to talk to him.
"I was joking about the cleaning"
He maintains that he was joking about the cleaning earlier, or, at least, half joking.
"There must be a reason"
“Why are you doing this?” Dani enquires, “Why The Pizza Place – why now? There must be a reason.”
"I'm trying to look after my family"
He says that he is trying to look after his family – better late than never,
"Why the checkup?"
then she wants to know why he had a checkup at the hospital. “Does it matter?” he asks,
"Do I look sick to you?"
“Do I look sick to you? Dan, can’t a father give his son a present without an ulterior motive?”
"It depends on whom the father is"
“It depends on who the father is, actually,” she replies.
"Tell him I want a chat"
He asks her to tell Gwern he wants a chat, just the two of them, when he is ready.
"I can keep my job"
Siwsi is back at Y Felin, where Indeg is lying on the sofa, announcing, “I can keep my job – I start back tomorrow morning.” Indeg regards that as good news.
"Mud sticks, especially for people like me"
Siwsi continues, “Is it? There’s a story out there that I’m a thief and not to be trusted – and mud sticks, especially for people like me! I’m not going to feel sorry for myself –
"I want you to move out!"
“because you’re the one with the problem. I want you to move out – I’m serious.
"Someone who can sabotage their friends"
“I can’t share a house with someone who can sabotage their friends.”
"We are friends, Siwsi"
Indeg argues that she did not do that and that they are friends;
"I thought we were unrtil you threw me under the bus!"
“I thought you were until you threw me under the bus to get what you want,” Siwsi snarls.
"I wasn't doing it for me . . ."
“I wasn’t doing it for me – I didn’t want them!” shouts Indeg,
". . . you wouldn't believe me, anyway"
“It doesn’t matter – you wouldn’t believe me, anyway!”
Indeg rushes out of the house
She picks up her coat and leaves the house.
