"I'm at the other end of the phone, Ffion"

Jinx hurries downstairs and tells Ffion that he is at the other end of the phone;  “Yes, I know,” she replies.

"Don't go wandering"

He instructs her not to go wandering and she agrees that she will not;  he leaves the house.

She abandons the jigsaw puzzle

As soon as he has gone, Ffion abandons the jigsaw puzzle which she has been half-heartedly doing, picks up her phone and dials a number.

"Could you come over?"

“Hope you don’t mind me asking, but could you come over?”

"Yes, no problem"

At Llwyncelyn, Tom answers, “Yes, I’m sure I can pop over, no problem,”

"Who was that?"

then tells Gaynor, who is doing her make-up,

"Work want me to go in earlier"

“That was work – they want me to go in earlier – one of the lads is ill.

"Fish and mussel soup . . ."

But I’ll be back in plenty of time to make dinner – fish and mussel soup.”

". . . plus a little Chablis"

He has also bought a little Chablis to go with it and Gaynor considers herself very lucky,

"Can we do it tomorrow night instead?"

but then adds, “Can we do it tomorrow night instead?   I’m going to a meeting to save Apêl Maenan tonight.”

"Is that wise, Gaynor?"

Tom wonders whether she ought to go;  “It’s not wise to be seen to oppose a company that employs me,”

"I don't want people to think you're putting pressure on me"

but she has already promised Diane that she will be there – and she wants to support Megan.   Also she stresses that she does not want people to think that he is putting pressure on her.

"Do as you see fit"

“Do as you see fit – just remember to be back by eight,” he tells her,

"I don't think I can stop myself watching it"

“There’s that film we wanted to watch – I don’t think I can stop myself from watching it if you’re late.”

"I won't be late"

Gaynor promises not to be late.

"Will you display one in your window?"

Diane walks along the street with posters in her hand and asks Jinx if he will display one in his window;

"This whole thing is terrible!"

he comments, “This whole thing is terrible – throwing Megan out like that!”

"Don't forget the meeting, Siôn"

Siôn is just passing Bethania and Diane calls to him, reminding him that the meeting to save Apêl Maenan is tonight;  “Yes, I saw your e-mail,” he answers,

"I'll persuade Eileen to be there, too"

“I’ll be there – and I’ll persuade Eileen to be there, too.”

"There's a first time for everything"

Diane is surprised;  “There’s a first time for everything!” but Siôn is adamant that she, like everyone else, sees the benefit of Apêl Maenan

"It's a matter of principle for her"

and it is a matter of principle for her.

"She didn't seem too 'principled' in APD"

“She didn’t seem too ‘principled’ in APD yesterday,” Diane maintains, “She said some terrible things to Iolo!   He appeared to be quite upset, poor dab, and I don’t blame him!”

"I didn't know that"

Siôn knows nothing of this and Diane is surprised that she did not tell him;

"No – I'd be too ashamed as well . . ."

“No, I’d be too ashamed as well –

". . . but I would say those things in the first place"

“but I wouldn’t say those things in the first place.”

Siôn demands what things she is talking about;

"Homophobic things!"

she informs him, “Homophobic things,” and walks away to distribute more of her posters.

Siôn is shocked

This makes Siôn think.

"I'm starting to remember more"

Ffion thanks Tom for coming over and he asks if anything is wrong.   “I’m starting to remember more,” she says, “And I want you to take me to see DS Thomas – I would go myself but I’m not allowed to drive.”

"Is it about that 'soil' business?"

He enquires whether this is about the ‘soil’ business and she goes on that she thinks she remembers seeing something in the soil as well.

"It's like I can almost reach it"

“It’s like I can almost reach it – and then it disappears.”

This has got Tom really worried, but he suggests that it is a good thing that she cannot remember;

"Your brain is protecting you from the trauma"

“Your brain is protecting you from the trauma.”

"I want to remember – will you take me?"

Ffion insists that she does not want it to – she wants to remember and demands whether he will take her to the police station.

"Do you think that's a good idea?"

Tom continues trying to dissuade her;  “Do you think that’s a good idea?   Unless you have something concrete to tell them, they might accuse you of wasting their time.”

"You're exactly like Jinx!"

She groans that he is exactly like Jinx.   Tom reckons that he might have a point;  “You’ve been through a lot . . .”

"Are you going to take me or not?"

Now Ffion is becoming angry;  “I’ve had enough of this – are you going to take me or not?   I’ll just phone someone else.”

He needs to keep an eye on her

He is anxious to keep an eye on Ffion, so has no choice but to agree to take her.

"Did you read the e-mail?"

Gaynor is in the deli when Diane arrives and asks if she read the e-mail about tonight’s meeting;  she agrees that she will be coming.

"Will you ask Tom to come with you?"

“Will you ask Tom to come with you?” Diane goes on, “He might know more about what the company plans to do,” but Gaynor does not consider that to be a good idea.

"I don't want you hassling my customers"

Eileen, behind the counter, angrily asks Diane whether she wants something;  “Because I don’t want you hassling my customers!”   Diane denies that she is hassling anyone.

"If you don't want anything . . ."

“Well if you don’t want anything, you might as well go,” she is instructed.

"You've got more confidence in her conscience than me!"

Siôn has just come in and witnessed this;  on her way out Diane mutters to him, “You’ve got more confidence in her conscience than I have!”

"What are these horrible things you've been saying to Iolo?"

Siôn comes straight out with it and demands, “What are these horrible things you’ve been saying to Iolo?

"The drama queen!"

“Oh, that’s what he’s told you, is it?   The drama queen!”   Siôn reveals that he has said nothing, but he heard about it from Diane.

"She's blown everything out of proportion"

“She’s blown everything up out of proportion,” says Eileen.

"If there's one thing I can't stand, it's homophobia!"

“If there is one thing I can’t stand, Eileen, it’s homophobia!” growls Siôn.

"Not in front of my customers, Siôn"

She is rather anxious not to discuss this in front of customers, but Siôn is not discouraged and continues, “Even if he wasn’t my son . . .”

"I don't want any more of this I my shop!"

but Eileen makes it crystal clear she does not want any more of this in her shop,

Siôn leaves

so he turns and leaves.

PC Lesley Lewis comes into the interview room

In the interview room of the police station, PC Lesley Lewis (formerly Thomas) and another officer enter to talk to Ffion.

"Where's DS Thomas?"

“Where’s DS Thomas?” she demands;  she is told that the DS is not available at the moment.   “But I’ve been talking to DS Thomas – she’s the one who knows.”

"She's away on another job"

It is explained that she is away on another job;  Ffion is quite willing to wait until she gets there, but the PC is now becoming rather irritated.

"It's me or nobody else this morning!"

“I’m not going to say this again – it’s me or nobody else this morning – is that clear?   Now, are you sure you’re happy to have Mr Humphreys present?”   Ffion replies that she wants him with her.

“You say you have more evidence?”

"It was something to do with soil"

Ffion has remembered something, that the attack on her has something to do with soil – she remembers seeing soil, but there is no more than that, other than Ffion believes that there was something in it, but cannot remember what it was.

"I don't expect you to understand"

“I don’t expect you to understand – because you’re not working on the case,” Ffion protests, but is told that the PC is aware of the facts and has the file in front of her.

"I want to know what you're doing to catch my attacker!"

“I want to know what you’re doing to catch the person who tried to kill me!”

"We're doing everything we can"

Ffion snarls and is told that the police are doing everything that they can.

“I want to talk to someone more senior than a constable!” demands Ffion.

"If you can be respectful, Mrs Llywelyn . . ."

“If you can be respectful, Mrs Llywelyn, I’ll make notes to give to DS Thomas – otherwise I’ll have to ask you to leave.”

Ffion is rather deflated . . .

Ffion is rather deflated by this and sits down again,

. . . and Tom appears to be smirking

which Tom seems to find quite amusing.

Eileen comes in , , ,

Up in the shop flat, Siôn is adjusting the splint on his wrist when Eileen comes in

. . . with her peace offering

with a peace offering, in the form of some cakes from Tamed, and invites him to choose one.   “No, thank you,” he says.

"You can't say anything without being misinterpreted"

“You can’t say anything these days without it being misinterpreted,” Eileen sighs.

"Diane was adamant"

Siôn says that Diane was adamant.   “Diane?   What does she know?   She’s more stupid than she looks if she thinks that what I said was homophobic!

"You're not going to take Diane's word over mine?"

“You’re not going to take Diane’s word over mine, are you?”

"I've spoken to Iolo as well"

“I’ve spoken to Iolo as well – he would never lie about something like this,” Siôn answers, but she accuses Iolo of misunderstanding.

`"You know what I'm like when I'm angry"

“You know what I'm like when I’m angry – things come out wrong,” she insists.

Siôn is certain that things like that do not ‘come out wrong’;

"Homophobia is a line in the sand for me!"

“Homophobia is a line in the sand for me!” he snaps as he heads towards the door.   Eileen wants to know where he is going;  he tells her that he needs time to think, as, at the moment,

Eileen is stunned by this news

he cannot see a future for them if this is what Eileen believes.

"No fingerprints, no weapon, no witnesses, no CCTV"

PC Lewis summarises, “There are no fingerprints, no weapon, no witnesses, no CCTV.   It’s difficult to find the individual responsible without more evidence.”

Ffion points out that she has just given evidence by telling what she remembers,

"There is nothing concrete there"

but is reminded that there is nothing concrete there.   Tom stresses that the police are doing their best, but they do not have any suspects at the moment.

"What have you been doing for two months?"

“What have you been doing for two months?” Ffion demands, “I’ll come back tomorrow to speak to DS Thomas.

"I won't stop until he's caught!"

“I won’t stop until the person who tried to kill me is caught!   Understand?”

He is going to have to watch his step

Tom is definitely rattled.

"Should we have organised it next week?"

The turnout for the meeting has been virtually non-existent and Kath is wondering whether they should have organised it for next week, to give people the chance to know what is going on.

"A lot have said they're coming"

“A lot have said they’re coming,” replies Diane.   Kath comments that she hopes they do, to keep the till busy.

"This isn't about your till"

Diane reminds her that this is about Apêl Maenan, not her till, adding, “Can we expect to see Cassie at the meeting tonight?”   Kath gets the impression that she is more upset than she is willing to admit with this Hywel business.

"This company is bringing out the worst in people"

“This company is bringing out the worst in people,” she groans.   Diane enquires how things are between Kath and Brynmor;

“There’s nothing to say – we’re not in touch at all.”

"I don't know why we're bothering with this meeting"

Diane regards that as a good thing;  she does not know why they are bothering with this meeting.   “They’re not going to stop until they flood this village.”

"You're giving up without a fight?"

Kath is amazed that she is giving up without a fight like this,

"It's going to take more than two of us!"

but is reminded, “It’s going to take more than the two of us to fight them!”

"Have a bit of faith, Diane"

She is urged to have a bit of faith.

"You were rather agitated earlier"

Later, Tom drops in at Deri Fawr to check on Ffion as she was rather agitated earlier;

"I could have strangled that constable!"

“I could have strangled that constable!” she snarls, “I’ll talk to DS Thomas tomorrow – I’ll get more sense from her.   Do you want a cup of tea?”

"The only good thing about being ill is all the biscuits"

Tom says that he will make it and tells her to sit down;  “I hope you like biscuits – the only good thing about being ill is all the biscuits I get,” she tells him.

Tom is 'spiking' one of the teas

Tom can clearly be seen emptying some white powder from a small brown bottle into one of the tea cups, just as Jinx comes into the house.

"I'll have one – milk, no sugar"

“I’ll have a tea as well – milk, no sugar,” he says

"You're getting on well"

and commends Ffion on the amount of the jigsaw she has completed.

She says that Tom has been a lot of help today,

"No, not with the jigsaw"

“No, not with the jigsaw – he took me down to the police station.   I told you I wanted to tell them about what I remembered –

"It was a waste of time!"

“but I needn’t have bothered – it was a waste of time!”

Tom brings over the tea . . .

Tom brings over the two cups of tea, but Jinx protests that the white cup is his

. . . but Jinx wants his own cup

and swaps them over, which rather upsets Tom’s plan.

"That's not a bad cup"

Jinx takes a sip and describes it as, “A nice cup of tea.”

A third person arrives

Kath and Diane sit at opposite sides of a table in the Deri, and are pleased to see Gaynor coming in through the door.   “Have I made a mistake with the time?” she asks.

"I e-mailed everyone!"

Diane says that she has put posters around the village and e-mailed everyone;  Gaynor decides that she will have a glass of wine while she is waiting.   Diane’s phone sounds and they hope that it is someone saying they will be late.

Diane squints at the message

Diane peers at it, then asks Gaynor to read it out for her;

"Megan's too upset to join us"

“Ah, Megan – she’s too upset to join us.   She says, ‘What’s the world coming to if there’s no friendship in the community?’”

"There's not much point carrying on"

In that case, Kath cannot see that there is much point in carrying on and Diane complains that not even Siôn has turned up.

"I hate to say it, but Hywel Llywelyn's right!"

“I hate to say it, but Hywel Llywelyn’s right – this just proves there’s no such thing as community any more!” growls Diane, but the others try to convince her otherwise.

"When I lost Izzy, Megan was there"

Gaynor says, “When I lost Izzy, Megan was one of the first  to call, with tea and Bara Brith, ready to listen and expecting nothing in return.   I can’t think of anyone who embodies community more than Megan Harries.”

"Megan Harries, OBE, remember"

Kath, reminds her that it is Megan Harries, OBE, and Gaynor continues to insist that they need to start giving back;

"We must show we're going to be there for her"

“Showing Megan that we are going to be there for her, like she has been for us.”

"There is such a thing as community!"

“Yes, and you know what?   Show that Hywel Llywelyn there is such a thing as community!” declares Kath.

"To celebrating Megan!"

They drink a toast, “To celebrating Megan!”

"And proving Hywel Llywelyn wrong!"

Diane adds, “And proving Hywel Llywelyn wrong!”

"The police can't act on a feeling"

“I knew there was something in what I saw,” Ffion insists, but Jinx stresses that the police cannot act on a feeling.   She is adamant that it is more than a feeling, but is told that they want facts.   Now he had better go and pick up Arwen, but when he stands up, he is very unsteady on his feet.

"I must have stood up too quickly"

“I must have stood up too quickly,” he concludes and collects the three mugs.   Tom thinks that it is time he went as well;

"See you again soon"

he will visit her again soon.

"Look, Siôn, I'm not a prejudiced person"

Siôn comes back into the shop flat, where Eileen is glad to see him;  “Look, Siôn, I’m not a prejudiced person – I’m sorry I made you think I was.”

"You said Iolo is gay to be fashionable"

“You said that Iolo is gay in order to be fashionable,” Siôn reminds her,

"That came out wrong"

but she points out that it came out wrong.   “Being gay has nothing to do with fashion!” Siôn continues and she maintains that she knows that.

"Prejudice is prejudice"

He has his doubts about this, so she admits that she does have some old-fashioned views about some things.   Siôn regards prejudice as prejudice;  “There’s no room for it!” he tells her, “You can’t hide behind the excuse that you’re old-fashioned.”

"I don't want to lose you, Siôn"

Eileen is becoming worried now and whines, “I don’t want to lose you, Siôn – our relationship is special.”   He replies that she has let him down and she is sorry about that;

"The last thing I want to do is hurt you"

“The last thing I want to do is to hurt you.”

"I don't see a future for us"

He stipulates, “Well, you’ll have to change your attitude – and quickly, too, because, as I said, otherwise I don’t see a future for us.”

"I don't feel too well"

Later, Jinx comes very unsteadily down the stairs and tells Ffion that he does not feel too well.

"Is it something you ate?"

She wonders if it is something he ate;  “You were lightheaded before you went to pick up Arwen.”

"What shall we have – a pizza?"

He lies down on the sofa and appears to be losing track of reality as he suggests, “What shall we have – a pizza?”   He is not making sense

"Have you been drinking?"

and Ffion wonders whether he has been drinking.

By now he has passed out

He simply dozes off on the sofa and Ffion is very worried.

Tom watches the film alone

At Llwyncelyn, Tom is watching the film

Diane comes home with Gaynor

when Gaynor returns home, accompanied by Diane;  Gaynor offers her a glass of Chablis,

"I like a drop of Chablis!"

which does not meet with Tom’s approval.

"She's a natural public speaker"

He asks how the meeting went and Diane responds, “You ought to have heard this one – a natural public speaker.   You’re wasted in that pharmacy, Gaynor.”

"I never suspected that the husband killed her"

Tom advises that the film has just finished – and it was good as well;  “I never suspected that the husband killed Kate Winslet’s character.”

"There's no point watching it now"

Gaynor complains that there is no point in her watching it now.   Tom will now have an early night,

Diane moves Tom's jacket . . .

as Diane is invited to sit down and removes Tom’s hi-vis jacket from the back of the chair, in the process tipping something out of the pocket.

. . . and a small bottle falls from it

It is a small plastic bottle, marked with hazard symbols, although it is difficult to ascertain exactly what it is.

"Poison – to deal with the mouse problem"

Tom has to quickly come up with some plausible explanation, which is, “Poison, to deal with the mouse problems at the dam site – but they won’t be a problem for long.”

"Fergus can get rid of anything"

Diane recalls that they always used to have problems with mice at Bryntirion this time of the year.   “I’ve got number of a good exterminator,” she adds, “Fergus can get rid of anything!”   Tom believes that everything is now under control.   He goes off to bed.

"How about some Brie to go with the wine?"

Gaynor suggest that they could have some brie to go with the wine;  Diane remarks, “A natural public speaker and a brilliant hostess!”

Tom listens . . .

Tom pauses at the foot of the stairs listening to this

. . . then goes upstairs

and then goes up.
