Kath looks at the memory stick

Kath is looking at the memory stick and the envelope in which it came,

"Have you got any coffee on the go?"

when Brynmor walks in, carrying a flask.   “Have you got any coffee on the go?” he asks,

"I thought I'd take this with me"

“I thought I’d fill this up to take with me – I’m going to take a walk to clear my head – are you OK with that?”

Brynmor answers the door

Before she can answer, the buzzer sounds and Brynmor admits Cassie, although he is told not to do so.

"What are you doing here?"

“What are you doing here?” Kath demands

"We need to choose paint colours"

and is told that they need to choose paint colours for the Deri.

“Why did you think I’d want to discuss that?” Kath snarls;

"Don't start this nonsense again"

Cassie urges her not to start this nonsense again.   They need to get the Deri back on its feet

She suggests a colour

and she suggests the colour ‘True Taupe’, which Kath dismisses as, “ugly!”

"What have you done to your face?"

When Brynmor wants to have a look, Cassie exclaims, “What have you done to your face?”

"It's nothing serious"

He describes it as nothing serious, but when asked who did it,

"Dyff"

he replies that it was Dyff.   Cassie is stunned by this, but Brynmor maintains that it does not matter now and leaves for his walk.

"That's why Dyff had to leave, is it?"

“Oh, right – that’s why Dyff had to leave, was it?” Cassie gasps, but is urged to leave it.   “I’m shocked that Dyff would do such a thing,” she continues,

"I said leave it, Cassie!"

but again Kath tell her to leave it.

"It's an awful thing to do!"

“Why?   It’s an awful thing to do!”

"Dyff didn't do it!"

Finally, Kath informs her, “Dyff didn’t do it – Brynmor’s lying to me!”

Hywel is just leaving the house

As Brynmor walks along the street past Tomos ac Ellis, he sees Hywel coming out of his house, who also asks about his injury.

"Oh, I fell on the stairs"

“Oh, I fell on the stairs – you should see the stairs!” he jokes,

"You don't fancy a little walk, do you?"

but then goes on, “Hywel, you don’t fancy a little walk, do you?”

"I have to pick up Esher at three"

Hywel has to pick up Esther at three, but he is assured he will be back by then, and Brynmor has some Colombian coffee with him, which will ‘blow his socks off’.

"It's about time we had a chat"

“It’s about time we had a chat, anyway – come on.”   Hywel looks rather puzzled.

They have watched the CCTV pictures

Kath is showing Cassie the CCTV footage;  “So Brynmor doesn’t know you’ve got that USB?” says Cassie and is told that it arrived in an envelope with Dyff’s handwriting on it.

"You have to tell Brynmor"

“Well, you’ll have to tell Brynmor, so you can get the truth!” Cassie insists.

"You'd know all about the truth, wouldn't you?"

“Oh well, you’d know all about the truth, wouldn’t you, Cassie?”   Kath is told that Cassie is trying to help here here.   “Isn’t it obvious that Brynmor framed Dyff because he didn’t want him around the place?”

"Best friends again, are you?"

Footsteps can be heard on the stairs and Eleri comes in, wondering what is the big secret;  “Best friends again, are you?”

"We were discussing the beating"

“We were discussing the beating your father got,” Cassie announces;

"Yes, that Dyff is dangerous!"

Eleri agrees that Dyff is dangerous, but is now going for a run, having put on her smart watch.

"Is she involved?"

Cassie suspects that she is involved, but Kath does not know the answer to that.

Cheryl comes in

Then Cheryl arrives, having been let in by Eleri

Kath looks worried about this letter

and brings some items of post which were left by the door.   “Are we still choosing the Deri’s decor this morning?   I’ll just pop to the toilet first –

"I've got bills coming out of my ears"

“by the way, are you paying me for this morning?   Because I’ve got bills coming out of my ears – and Christmas is on the way.”

"You can have £100"

Cassie agrees that she can have £100, but is told, “That won’t even cover my electric bill!”

"It's from the Fire Authority"

Then Kath discovers that in the post is a letter from the Fire Authority;  she is desperately concerned that they should get the insurance.

Kath crosses her fingers

Cassie takes the letter and reads its contents.

They look across the Gwendraeth Valley

Hywel and Brynmor are standing in a field overlooking the rather shallow valley;

"This will all be water"

“This will all be water, you see,” says Brynmor, “As far as the eye can see.”

"It's a hell of a development"

Hywel describes it as, “A hell of a development,” but is told that it will benefit the area so much.

“However, not everyone can see that, as you know,” Brynmor continues,

"So you're in favour of it"

so Hywel concludes that he is in favour.   “And how do you feel about the scheme?” Brynmor asks, “Because you didn’t vote in favour of it, did you?   As you know, the list of shareholders is public –

Brynmor has Hywel pretty well summed up

“so were you showing your opposition by not voting and giving your shares to Rhys?”

Hywel maintains that it is more complicated than that;

"Esther is worried about the wildlife"

“In any case, Esther is worried about the effect it is going to have on wildlife – I share her concerns.   Why this obsession with my opinion, then?”

"Oh, there's no obsession, Hywel"

Brynmor points out that there is no obsession, but Hywel finds it obvious that he is ‘fishing’ here.

"Have the company sent you?"

He suspects that the company has sent Brynmor to talk to him.

“Not quite, no!” Is Brynmor’s reply.   Hywel has found that there is not much information about the managers of this company,

"They can talk to me themselves"

but if they want to talk to him, they can talk to him themselves.

"That's exactly what I'm doing"

“That’s exactly what I’m doing,” he is told and looks incredulously at Brynmor.

"They don't think it's our fault"

After checking through the letter, Kath gasps, “Thank heavens they don’t think it’s our fault.”   Cassie makes it clear that it was nothing to do with her;

"You ignored the problem with the oven"

Kath was the one who ignored the fact there was a problem with the oven.

Cheryl has walked in and is listening to this, as Kath insists that they both hid the truth.

"Did you know about the oven?"

“Did you know about the oven?

"You let me work in a dangerous kitchen!"

“You let me work in a kitchen that you knew was dangerous.”

"Let's talk about this, Cheryl"

Cassie wants them to talk about this, but Cheryl exclaims, “Talk – with you?   No chance!

"We could have died!"

“Gaynor and I could have died because of your negligence!”   She storms out of the flat and slams the door.

"So no-one knows?"

Back in the field, Hywel demands, “So nobody knows about this?” and it is confirmed that nobody in Cwmderi knows.   It is a very big international company and there are several board members;  that is why Brynmor was in New York for so long.

"How have you kept this from Kath?"

“How have you kept this from Kath?” Hywel asks.

"The same way you've hidden your connection . . ."

“Well, in the same way you’ve hidden your connection with the dam,” is the reply,

". . . by using this"

“By using your head – and I’m sure Hywel Llywelyn’s public support would make things run more smoothly – especially as the chairman of the planning committee.”

Hywel is uneasy

Hywel is becoming uneasy;  “You know why I’ve been so uncertain about this – people are against it – and as a parent, I have to prioritise Esther’s safety.

"Someone threw a brick through our window"

“It’s not that long ago someone threw a brick through our window.”

"The village will never get another chance like this"

Brynmor says that he understands that, “But the village will never get another chance of investment like this ever again – and I’m sure that we as a company can make sure that you and Esther are safe – and that you get everything you need.

"There might be a place for you on the board . . ."

“Perhaps, who knows, one day, there might be a place for you on the board.

". . . imagine what your father would have said about that"

“Now, imagine what your father would have thought about that.”

"She could say we're frauds!"

Kath is panicking;  “She could say we’re frauds.   You can go to jail for hiding information!”

"You were the one who did it, Kath"

Cassie reminds Kath again that she was the one who did it, although Kath is insistent that they are both responsible.

"We have to get her to keep her mouth shut!"

“We have to get her to keep her mouth shut – we have to pay her!   She said she was skint – we could give her, what, £5,000?”

"Are you mad?"

Cassie thinks that Kath is mad.   “We have no choice, Cassie.”

Brynmor is back from his outing

Just then, Brynmor comes back from his walk in the countryside,

Cassie goes to talk to Cheryl

so Cassie agrees to go and talk to Cheryl, while Kath must talk to Brynmor.

"It wasn't Dyff who hit you, was it?"

“It wasn’t Dyff who hit you, was it, Brynmor?” demands Kath.

Brynmor remains silent

Brynmor remains silent for a moment,

"It's all on here"

but she continues, “Don’t try and deny it!” as she brandishes the USB stick, “It’s all on here.

Eleri is on her run

Eleri runs along the High Street and is consulting her watch when she meets Hywel.   “I’ve just had the company of the most important man in your life,” he tells her, “Your father.

Brynmor is an interesting man"

Brynmor is a very interesting man.   Do you know anything about the bruises on his face?”

"Yes, poor thing, he fell on the . . ."

“Oh yes, poor thing – he fell on the . . .” she begins and Hywel fills in the missing word ‘stairs’.   “He’s been having these turns since the heart attack, but his mind is sharp as ever.”

"He took me for a spin up to Bryn Melyn"

“He took me for a spin up to Bryn Melyn to show me what this dam is going to be like.”

"Are you in favour now?"

She enquires whether he is in favour now, then has to ‘cool down’ after her run.

Hywel is very keen to get away

Cassie approaches, asking what Eleri wanted, but Hywel is in a hurry to go.

"Who are those men, Brynmor?"

As they watch the CCTV, Kath asks, “Who are those men, Brynmor?    You arranged the whole thing, didn’t you, to frame Dyff?   Or perhaps you’ve got something else to tell me.

"I want the whole truth!"

“I want the truth, Brynmor, the whole truth.”

Cassie arrives

At Maes-y-Deri, Cheryl is wondering what to do when Cassie visits;

"Look, I know you're upset"

“Look, I know you’re upset and I can understand why.”   Cheryl has been worried the whole time whether she was responsible for the fire somehow.

“Do you have any idea how guilty I felt?” she demands.

Cassie apologises once more

Cassie apologises once again, explaining that Kath made a mistake and then she made a mess of things, trying to protect an old friend.

"Yes, and to hell with everyone else!"

“Yes, and to hell with everyone else!” says Cheryl.

"I'm not proud of the way we dealt with it"

Cassie is not proud of the way they dealt with it, but insist that the Deri is going to reopen.   “Well, I won’t be there!” snarls Cheryl, “You can’t even pay me properly – why should I?”

Cassie maintains that they need her and she needs them;

"We're going to pay you for everything – more than £100"

“We’re going to pay you for everything – a fairer sum than £100 – as long as you promise not to tell anyone.”

"So it's a bribe?"

Cheryl concludes that this is a bribe,

"No, it's compensation"

but Cassie would prefer to call it ‘compensation’ for everything she has lost.

"I don't want your hush money!"

“You can call it what you want – I don’t want your hush money!” Cheryl declares.

"You haven't told anyone, have you?"

“You haven’t told anyone, have you?” asks Cassie, “You do understand that Kath and I could end up in jail?   It would be the end of the Deri – you don’t want that, do you?   Right, I’ll transfer the money later on.”

"I don't want the money!"

Cheryl, once again protests that she does not want the money;

"You can always transfer it back to me"

“OK, but if that’s the case, you can always transfer the money back to me,” is Cassie’s parting comment.

"Eleri got this stupid idea into her head"

Brynmor confesses to Kath, “Eleri – she got this stupid idea into her head.  She arranged for a couple of boys to give Dyff a hiding at the site of the dam.   I drove up there to put a stop to it,

"The two blokes thought I was Dyff"

“but the two blokes thought I was Dyff – I never intended to frame him and I regretted what I said immediately!”

"Are you serious?"

Kath wonders if he is serious about that and shakes her head;  “Were you that concerned about Dyff being back, then?”

"Wouldn't you be?"

“Wouldn’t you be?   You were getting on so well, memories – his personality!”

"I'm your wife, Brynmor"

She angrily points out that she is Brynmor’s wife and he obviously does not trust her.

"I've beaten my personal best"

Eleri can be heard returning from her run and announces that she has beaten her personal best.

"You've really gone and done it this time!"

Kath laughs at this, exclaiming, “You said it!   You’ve really gone and done it this time, haven’t you, Eleri?   Arranging for Dyff to have a hiding!”

"You've told her!"

Eleri is furious that her father has told Kath.

“Aren’t are you ashamed of yourself?” Kath shouts, but Eleri does not for a moment regret it.   “Oh no, of course you don’t – look at the state of your father!

"He's only just got over his heart attack!"

“He’s only just got over his heart attack and now all this!”

Eleri explains that was not the intention,

"What was a then intention, then?"

so Kath wants to know what the intention was.

"Can we just stop this?"

Brynmor tries to call a halt to this argument, but Eleri will not listen;

"Dyff needed to leave!"

“Dyff needed to leave – it was the right thing to do for Dad!”

Brynmor does not agree with that;  “No, it was an extremely stupid idea, Eleri!”   Kath has had enough and walks out of the room.

"The last thing I wanted to do was hurt you"

“The last thing I wanted to do was hurt you,” Eleri assures her father.

"I had no choice"

He is quite aware of that but points out that Dyff got hold of the CCTV and showed it to Kath, so he had no choice but to tell her the truth.

Kath is listening

Now Kath is back in the doorway

Eleri is going for a shower

and Eleri growls that she is going for a shower.   Kath and Brynmor are left looking at each other.

"I don't know you at all, Brynmor"

“I don’t know you any more, Brynmor,” she says.

Cassie prepares to send the money

Cassie is making a transfer of £5,000 from the Deri Arms account to that of Cheryl Thomas;

"It's bit early for that"

Hywel brings her a glass of wine and she comments that it is rather early.

"I had something on my mind"

He apologises for earlier, with the excuse that he had something on his mind.

"It's easier to talk about these things"

“It’s easier to talk about these things sometimes,” she observes;  he says that he has had a business offer,

"It would give us financial security for years"

a good one, a big contract which would give Esther and himself financial security for years.   She does not regard that as a reason to sulk.

“It goes against my principles,” he continues

"People can't live without money"

and she reminds him that people cannot live without money.   As far as she is concerned, they all want to live a comfortable life, when all is said and done.

She sends the money to Cheryl

She presses the button to send the transfer.

Then there is a knock at the door

Just as they are about to drink their wine, there is a knock at the door and Hywel finds that it is Kath, looking for Cassie.

Hywel will make himself scarce

Hywel says that he has to pop out for a moment, asking whether risotto is all right for dinner tonight.   Cassie is quite amenable to that.

"Don't worry, I'm not staying"

“Don’t worry, I’m not staying,” Kath tells Cassie.

Cheryl arrives home . . .

Cheryl arrives home at Maes-y-Deri with a pint of milk and her phone sounds;

. . . and is notified of the transfer . . .

she sees that the money has been transferred to her and appears to be rather surprised by the amount;

. . . which certainly makes her think

it makes her think.

"Yes, that's what is getting under my skin!"

“Brynmor worships her, that’s the problem,” says Cassie;  that is exactly what is getting under Kath’s skin.   Kath simply wants to know if the problem with Cheryl has been sorted out.

"Well, I've sent her the money . . ."

“Well, I’ve sent her the money – so unless she sends it back to me, I assume that everything’s OK.”

"Right, I'm glad to hear it"

Kath is very pleased to hear it and promptly leaves.

"It has my full support"

At Cysgod y Glyn, Hywel has very carefully thought about this and agrees that Quantum Hydro Works has his full support.

"You're cut from the same cloth as your father"

“Oh, you’re obviously cut from the same cloth as your father,” comments Brynmor.

"You made a good job of persuading me"

“You made a good job of persuading me – what did you put in that coffee, then?” says Hywel, as Eleri comes into the room.   Hywel has to return home as he has a risotto to prepare for his lodger;   Eleri sarcastically comments that there is someone in Cwmderi who knows what a risotto is.

"Everyone knows what a risotto is!"

Her father scathingly answers, “Everyone knows what a risotto is!”

"Kath should be back by now"

then points out that Kath should be back by now.

"If she comes back"

“If she comes back!” sneers Eleri, then apologises for a bad joke.   “I hope you didn’t tell Hywel too much.”

"People like Hywel are looking for status"

Brynmor insists that they needed to get him on their side;  “People like Hywel are looking for status – and that’s what I suggested to him.”

"How did you do it with Diane?"

Then he suddenly remembers, “What happened with Diane?   How did you do it?”

"Right place, right time"

“Right place, right time,” Eleri enigmatically replies, “I happened to hear that she’d taken Jason’s driving points – I sent her an innocent little threat via e-mail

"I let her motherly instincts do the rest"

and let her motherly instincts do the rest.”

"That's my girl!"

“That’s my girl!” her father proudly remarks.

"Things are starting to come together"

“Things are starting to come together now, aren’t they?” she smiles,

"Indeed they are!"

as Brynmor agrees that they are indeed.
