"Have you got it?"

Ieuan arrives at number 21 and Hywel demands, “Have you got it?”   Ieuan jokingly replies that he just called in for some cornflakes and a chat.   He is warned to keep his voice down, then takes an envelope from inside his jacket.

"Of course I've got it"

“Of course I’ve got it – although I don’t know why I had to sort this, after you threw the last one away!

"Do you have any ides how expensive they are?"

“Do you have any idea how expensive they are?”

"Rhys might have opened it"

Hywel points out that he could not have it sent there, in case Rhys opened it.

“Does it matter?” Ieuan demands, “We’re doing this to stop your son chasing my granddaughter.”

Hywel is adamant that he is not going to tell Rhys that his grandfather had an affair if he does not have to;  “If we’re related – if – I’ll tell him then!

"How long will it take to get the results?"

“How long will it take to get the results?”

"A week to ten days"

Ieuan replies that it says a week to ten days

"What's going on?"

and at that moment Rhys come downstairs, wanting to know what is going on.   He is told that it is confidential council work and his father tells him it is time he was going to work.

"You can carry on with your 'confidential work'"

“I’m going after breakfast – then you can carry on with your ‘confidential work’ without having to whisper.

"There's a meeting about the dam"

Hywel has a meeting with the planning committee about this dam.

Ieuan had heard that the application had been received;

"If you manage to give it the green light . . ."

“Well, if you manage to give it the green light, you’ll be wiping your backside with £50 notes!” he laughs.

"Just read in instructions, Ieuan"

Hywel just wants him to read the instructions so they can get on with doing the test and forget about it.

"What have you done with Gwern?"

At number 9, Dani comes downstairs and asks, “OK, who are you and what have you done with Gwern?”   He says that he got up early

"I might walk to school this morning"

and thought he might walk to school this morning.   “I’m taking Seren anyway,” she continues, but he says he needs to get there early to finish his homework in the library.

“Come on – don’t you believe me?”

"You skipped school last week"

Dani reminds him that he had skipped school last week,

"I've been there every day since"

but he insists that he has been in school every day since then.

“Yes, only because I’ve watched you go in!” she exclaims,

"I need to be able to trust you"

“I’m not doing it for ever, but I need to be able to trust you – and that starts with at least a week when the school doesn’t phone me to say you haven’t turned up.   Get your stuff and tell Seren to get a move on.”

"I'm taking the kids to school"

The door suddenly opens and Jinx comes in;  “I’m taking the kids to school,” says Dani,

"Can I text you later?"

“Can I text you later?”   Jinx decides that he will stay there until she gets back,

"I want to talk about the other night properly"

as he wants to talk about the other night properly.

Dani maintains that she does not know when she will be back;

The Pizza Place must be closed, then

“That’s OK, I’ve got all day,” he says, sitting down to watch the television.

"There's no milk"

At Bryntirion, DJ looks in the fridge, but finds no milk;

"It stank like cat's pee!"

“I threw it out,” Dai tells him, “It was off and stank like cat’s pee!”

"What am I going to have one my cereal?"

DJ demands what he will have on his cereal.

"I had Siencyn without milk"

“I had Siencyn [bread soaked in tea] without milk – it was very nice, too,” Dai informs him, but DJ is repulsed by the very idea.   His father goes on, “It will be better when Diane gets back – she never forgets to buy fresh milk.”

"You were the one who decided to stay herr"

DJ reminds him that he decided to stay at Bryntirion while she was away;  “Yeah, I wanted to keep you company here –

"I don't like to see you on your own"

“I don’t like to see you all on your own like some ‘Billy no mates’.”

DJ insists that he is fine and is busy finding bookings for ‘Flamingos’, his converted horsebox.

"Have you finished it?   Hallelujah!"

“Have you finished it?   Hallelujah!” says Dai.

It was more work than DJ had thought – and he has a booking today, a cancellation;  “So, are you busy this afternoon?   I could do with another pair of hands – please?”

"I'm supposed to be retired"

Dai points out that he is supposed to be retired – and in any case he does not know the difference between a ‘burrito’ and a ‘taco’;

"I'll be doing the cooking"

DJ stresses that he will be doing the cooking, as he goes to answer the front door.

Mark delivers a parcel

It is Mark, delivering a parcel containing the uniforms, as they have to look professional.

"Nefi wen!"

Nefi wen!   You haven’t bought chef’s hats or any of that nonsense?” Dai exclaims and is invited to try it on, so they can see how it looks.   “What?” shouts Dai.

Rhys does some tasting

Rhys is testing the brewery’s production

"How's it taste?"

when Gwern walks in and is told that it tastes like ‘cat’s pee’.   “I try it every couple of days to see how it’s maturing –

"Haven't you got school today?"

“haven’t you got school today?”

"Free morning"

He is told that Gwern has a ‘free morning’ and is not convinced.

"You don't get free mornings when you're doing GCSEs"

“You don’t get free mornings when you’re doing GCSEs.”

“I went to registration and I’ll go again after lunch – no-one will know I’m not there,” is Gwern’s rather optimistic reply.

"You can't miss school to come here"

“You can’t miss school just to come here,’ Rhys advises him.

"I've asked Lleucu to go on a date"

Gwern has asked Lleucu to go on a date with him tomorrow night and he needs some tips.   “We can have a chat tomorrow, then – now go back to school!” Rhys instructs him, but Gwern regards school as pointless.

“You’re welcome to come here and help me after school  – possibly I can offer you a part time job if the business does well.

"For now, you have to go to school"

“But for now, you have to go to school, Gwern!”   He reluctantly agrees to this (or at least says that he does.)

Gwern notices some keys . . .

There are two bunches of keys on the desk;  while Rhys’ back is turned

. . . and helps himself

Gwern helps himself to one of them and leaves the garage.

The post is going to be late in Cwmderi

Mark appears to be taking a break from his post round and is lounging on the sofa in Bryntirion with a cup of tea.   DJ maintains that they need an unbiased opinion on the new uniform and informs Mark that they are going to Cross Hands;

"It's important to make an impression"

“It’s important to make an impression – if we get there in time!”

"Do they have a fancy dress competition?"

Dai appears, clad in flamingo pink, protesting, “Does this market have a fancy dress competition?”   DJ asks Mark for his opinion;  he says that there is a possibility that Dai might go viral.

"I look like a Bryntirion Barbie!"

Dai, however, is adamant that he is not stepping out of that front door;  “I look like a Bryntirion Barbie!”

"It's important that we have a USP"

He is told that it is important that they have a USP [Unique Selling Point].

"I'll tell you where you can stick your USP!"

“I’ll tell you where you can stick your USP in a minute!” his father snarls, while Mark cannot stifle his laughter.

"The Cwmderi Chuckle Brothers!"

“We want them to remember the food, not remember that we look like the Cwmderi Chuckle Brothers!”   Mark points out that people will be talking about them;  DJ predicts that is how small businesses grow

"Please, Dad – I want this to be a success . . ."

and begs Dai to oblige, just for today, as he wants this to be a success

". . . for Sioned and the children"

 – for Sioned and the children.

Jinx looks around . . .

In Dani’s absence, Jinx has a look around his house;

. . . and in a kitchen drawer . . .

in a kitchen drawer

. . . finds the envelope of money

he finds the envelope of money and at that moment Gwern returns.   “What are you doing here?” Jinx asks, and Gwern wants to know the same thing.   “I’m waiting for Dani to come back.”

"And going through her stuff?"

“And going through her stuff?” asks Gwern.

"This is my house – and you should be in school"

It is pointed out that it is Jinx’s house and Gwern should be in school.   He makes the lame excuse that he forgot his pencil case,

"Fetch stand get back to school!"

is told to fetch it and get back to school

Ieuan is impatient

At number 21, Ieuan is looking at his phone while Hywel is speaking to Diane;

"Nothing apart from the usual"

“Nothing apart from the usual – some complaints – a fallen tree – holes in the road.   We’ll discuss it again – I’ll copy you in on every e-mail.   We could miss something talking ad-hoc like this.   Look after yourself and have a safe journey back.”

Ieuan appears puzzled by this conversation;

"I'm glad I'm not paying your phone bill"

“At last – I’m glad I’m not paying your phone bill.”   Diane apparently wants to throw herself back into her council work,

He thinks he has  persuaded her to stay a little longer

but Hywel has persuaded her to stay a little longer.

"I know what you're doing"

“I know what you’re doing – you don’t want her sniffing round this dam business – she’ll find out sooner or later.”

"I can deal with Diane"

Hywel is confident that he can deal with Diane

"Let's get on with this"

and they start with the DNA testing procedure.

Gwern is back at the deserted garage . . .

When the garage is deserted, but the light on the desk is still turned on, Gwern returns,

. . . to sample the wares . . .

going to the fridge to retrieve the plastic jug of what was earlier described as ‘cat’s pee’.

. . . which are still not up to standard

He pours himself a glass and is not impressed.

"Sorry, I had to go to the shop"

At last, Dani returns;  “Sorry, I had to go to the shop after dropping Gabs off,” she says, going into the kitchen to make a cup of tea.

"Who was that bloke?"

“Who was he?” Jinx demands, “The bloke who was here?”

"My ex-boss"

Dani confesses that it was her old boss.   As no further information is forthcoming,

Jinx continues, “And what was in that envelope?”

"My P45"

When she answers that it was her P45,

"That's a lie, Dani"

he responds, “That’s a lie!   I can see it in your eyes – are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

“Don’t be angry,” she says.

Ieuan does not like this

Ieuan takes a swab sample from the inside of his cheek, which he finds very unpleasant;  he places the swab in an envelope and will post them on his way home.

"You're not still here?"

When Rhys comes back, he is surprised to see that Griffiths is still there.

"To the council – about this confidential business"

“I’ll post them now,” says Ieuan, then adds for the benefit of Rhys, “To the council – to explain about this – confidential business.”

"I hav an important meeting in a few minutes"

Rhys wants to set up his computer there this afternoon to send a few e-mails, but his father says that he has an important meeting in a few minutes.

"You're obviously hiding something"

“Is something going on, Dad?” Rhys demands, “You and Griffiths are obviously hiding something.”

"I have to prepare for this Zoom meeting"

Hywel replies that he has to prepare for this Zoom meeting.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Jinx asks, after learning the full story.

"It's difficult, Jinx"

Dani points out that something like that was difficult.

"I could have helped you"

“I could have helped you,” he insists.

"By going over and hitting him?"

“How?   By going over there and hitting him?”

"That's the least that swine deserved"

“That’s the least that swine deserves!” Jinx snarls.   Dani says that is exactly what Garry would have done – and Dylan.

"I'm fed up with men thinking they know better"

She is fed up with men thinking that they know better – that she is some pathetic woman they need to rescue.

He stresses that he did not mean it like that, but she is adamant, “I needed to sort this out my own way – and I did.   He won’t touch me again.”

Gwern is back again

Gwern returns once more and Dani tells him to go upstairs;

"What have you done to her?"

“What have you done to her?” Gwern demands.

"Have you been drinking?"

It is immediately obvious that he has been drinking, but he denies this, maintaining that he has been in school all day.

"Apart from when you were skiving here earlier"

“Apart from when you were skiving here earlier,” Jinx reminds him and again he replies that he had forgotten his pencil case, which Jinx does not believe in for second.

"He was going through your stuff in the drawer, Dan"

“I don’t know what you’re laughing – have you told Dani what you were doing when I came home?   He was going through your stuff in the drawer, Dan.”

Again she tells him to go upstairs.

"I can't wait to give you a huge cwtch"

Later, Dai is back at Bryntirion, still in his fetching pink outfit and is talking to Diane on the phone;  “I can’t wait to give you a huge cwtch,” he says, “I’ll be right with you – I’m just packing up here.”

"This time with Glenys 'Pop' has done her the world of good"

DJ gathers from this that Diane is back.   “Do you know what?   It’s as if this time with Glenys ‘Pop’ has done her the world of good – she’s even ready to talk about a memorial service for Jason.”

DJ is pleased to hear that, but Dai detects that there is something wrong;

"The Flamingo van is a hit!"

“Today was a big success – this ‘Flamingo’ van is a hit!”

"I was hoping to make more profit"

DJ had just been hoping to make more profit this afternoon, but is reminded that it was the first outing;  “You’re not going to make a fortune in your first lunch hour – right, I’d better get changed –

"Looking like a pink highlighter"

“I don’t want Diane to see me looking like a pink highlighter and smelling of grease.”

"I hope Sioned sees I'm making an effort"

“I just hope Sioned sees that I’m making an effort,” groans DJ and admits that he has not seen her recently.   “She had another scan yesterday.”

"She has scans more often that I brush my teeth"

Nefi wen!   She has scans more often than I brush my teeth,” Dai remarks;  it is pointed out that this was an NHS one – she is having private ones as well –

"I didn't go with her"

and he did not go with her.

"Are you going to feed your worker?"

Suddenly Dai realises that he is hungry again;  “Are you going to feed your worker or let him starve?   I’m going home in a minute, but there’s food left in the van –

"I don't like to see food go to waste"

“I don’t like to see food go to waste – do you?   Come on.”

Hywel is on his Zoom meeting . . .

Hywel is on his Zoom meeting and confirms that letters will be sent out to those affected by the Quantum Hydro Works plans.

. . . and Rhys is eavesdropping

Rhys comes downstairs and he immediately takes an interest when hearing that name.

“I don’t need to remind you that this is a very sensitive application, because there are people in the area who will be affected –

"I expect there to be some opposition"

“and yes, I do expect there to be some opposition at the beginning, but I’m confident that they will see the economic benefits of the project in the end,” Hywel says.

"Is this what you were looking for?"

Dani is now holding the envelope of money;  “Is this is what you were looking for?’ she asks,

"I was looking for my own stuff"

but Jinx replies that he was looking for his own stuff.   “In my drawer?   Why did you ask what was in it, if you already knew?

"What were you doing – testing me?"

“What were you doing – testing me?”

He denies that he had that intention;  “It’s not a P45, so you can’t blame me –

"You weren't telling the truth"

“because you weren’t telling the truth.”   Dani argues that she did not want to talk about it, and now he can understand why.

"I can't be with someone who doesn't trust me"

“I put up with Garry keeping tabs on me – I thought you were different.   You’re not – you don’t trust me and I can’t be with someone who doesn’t trust me.”

"Don't do this, Dani"

He demands what she is saying and she answers, “I think you know!”   He urges her not to do this,

"I think it's time you left!"

so she decides that it is time that he left.

"You can't throw me out"

“You can’t throw me out – this is my house,” he tells her.

"Just watch me!"

“Just watch me!” Dani declares.

"You shut me out and push me away"

“You just shut me out time after time and push me away,” he complains and she she insists that she does not want someone as needy as him.

“I’ve got three kids – I don’t want another one!” she rants.

"I'm just trying to help, Dani"

Jinx reminds her that he is trying to help;

"I don't need your help!"

“I don’t need your help!” is her reply.

"Then you don't need my home either!"

“Well, if you don’t need my help, you don’t need my home either!” Jinx tells her, “You’ve got a month – I’m moving back in here in a month.   It’s up to you where you go and what you do –

"That's not my problem!"

“but if you don’t want to be with me, that’s not my problem!”

Well, what else could you have expected?

Dani looks stunned as he leaves the house.

Rhys is studying something

Rhys is looking at the share certificate but his father thinks that it is paperwork for the brewery.

"Quantum Hydro Works"

“Quantum Hydro Works – it was sent to confirm that your shares are my name.   You were very keen to get it done as soon as possible, weren’t you?”

"I wanted to help with the business"

Hywel says that he wanted to help Rhys with the business;

"Being kind, were you?"

“Being kind, were you?   Helping your son?   What’s this about the company building a dam in the village?   Tell me, Dad – did you really put them in my name out of fatherly love –

"Or getting yourself out of a hole?"

“or in order to get yourself out of a hole?”

Hywel remains silent

Hywel has no answer to that.

"These are tip-top, fair play"

After their meal, Dai compliments DJ on his churros and tacos.   DJ thanks him for his help today;  “I couldn’t have done it without you.”

"You've got your father's business sense"

He is told that he has his father’s business sense and will be fine.

"Right, off you go back to Diane"

“Right, off you go back to Diane – you mustn’t keep her waiting – I’m glad to have you here, but it’s time for me to hand you back to Diane.   At least I’ll get some sleep then, won’t have to listen to you snoring – or wash your pants!”

"Today has been a new start . . ."

Dai tells him that today has been a new start;

". . . things will get better"

“Once Sioned sees everything you intend to do for her and those children, things will get better, you’ll see.”

"I inherited those shares"

Hywel has some explaining to do;  “I inherited the shares in my father’s will after he died – the company had a different name then, but he probably saw that they would be worth something one day.”

"Did he know what they intended to do?"

Rhys wonders if he knew that they intended to drown the valley;

"Only useless agricultural land"

Hywel corrects him, “Part of the valley – most of it is useless agricultural land.”

"And you stand to benefit from it"

“And you stand to benefit from it,” says Rhys,

"There's a long way to go"

but his father points out that there is a long way to go until that happens.

"You were going to let me take the flak"

“And you weren’t going to tell me – you were going to let me take the flak, because the shares are in my name.   When are they going public with their plans?”

"All hell will break loose!"

He is told that the letter goes out tomorrow;  “And then all hell will break loose!”

“Right, now I understand why you were in such a hurry to put them in my name – so that nobody would see the conflict of interest.

"Well, I'm not doing it for free . . ."

“Well, I’m not doing it for free – if I’m helping, I want some of the profits.”

He is reminded that he will get it all in his inheritance.   “I don’t want to wait that long – anyway, I’m the one taking the risk.   It’s my name on everything.

". . . I'm serious – 50%!"

“I’m serious – 50% – or you’ll have to explain to people why you have shares in the company that wants to drown their village.”

Hywel has no answer to that

Hywel does not know what to say to that.
